The difference in gfx quality between a 2010 title and a 2020 title isnt a whole lot, same for a 1060 vs a 2080ti.   • @rtyzxc
    @rtyzxc 4 года назад +47

    I've never played Battlefield, but a lot of this stuff applies to all games. You can't just loosely mash together a bunch of features and expect it to be good, or expect the players to make it good. It's not about the features, it's how they relate to each other. Any kid can think of features and any person can program it. Making a meaningfully balanced game however is a high art, and that work belongs to the game developer.
    If I'm being honest, most game devs nowadays have no idea what the hell they are doing. They use "sandbox" and "a lot of features" to avoid actually having to create the core game and instead sell an unfinished bag of trash with the help of polished look and trailers. Kids nowadays don't even know what good games are like, so all they can look for are satisfying gimmicks and audiovisual fidelity. I find it concerning to find a lot of people say that "Soulsborne ruined other video games for me", because they are actually fairly standard games, with the difference being that they are also well thought out / designed unlike most games nowadays.

    • @Avi1231
      @Avi1231 4 года назад +1

      Too true on that bit about most game devs having no idea what the hell they're doing. I do think it's at least in some part the fault of gamers ourselves. I've lost track of how many times I got shouted down for having interesting ideas with the argument "what do you know about game design?" or something similar. Gamers treated game design as some mystical, lost art that one must sequester oneself in a far away ashram to even possibly hope to gain some knowledge about.
      It's too much about big business and not enough about the art of making a game anymore (not like the long lost art of game design). I suspect it's why net-code is so frequently terrible these days. People keep buying entries in a franchise so they don't mind continuing to pump out games with major league net issues.

      They call it streamline, this is happened to allot of triple a titles we know from the past. I think there is a link to the game industry having become so big there is allot of money involved which changed the formula for allot of triple a gamesbeing transformed to a money grab instead of a actually good balanced game. I hate it when developers say freedom of being able to play how you want is the most important thing. Its a other word for sandbox which like you said is lacking a real core dynamic that creates interesting choices that have to be made that will reward or punnish a player. Sad to say Battlefield has been extremely streamlined in the last couple of years just to apease to more casual players which has resulted in verry dull gameplay. The games got simplified to work on controllers and adapted to be more like whatever poplar console FPS is big at the time. Not because of the graphics and other things that typically draw people in, but because i just had so much fun playing it. The community was really great, you are right about that and i remember hopping from one server to the next having a totally different experience on each one. The mods were absolutely outstanding, and i spent a lot of time playing all of the main ones like Point of Existence 2, Operation Peacekeeper, Eve of Destruction 2, Allied Intent Xtended. Project Reality was a bit too hardcore and realistic for me, but it is very impressive work.
    I loved the ranking and class system as well as the commander mode, which is something all other BF titles lacked. I loved being able to be on the ground few rounds then switch it up and help the rest of the team win the round using the UAV, resupply and scan feature to quickly spot enemies that would show up on the rest of the teams map.
    Sad to say it, but i spent all of my 20's playing this game and i don't regret it. So many good memories..

      Also, most play the medic class and throw med packs every 5 seconds, so it's basically auto heal even if there's wasn't auto heal.

Most of current player first BF game was BF3 or BF4 and unfortunately never experienced BF2 or BF2142 era. It's also ironic to see how many fans now say, that DICE ruined BF franchise with BF5, mostly because it changed. This was exactly same thing, when old BF fans waited for BF3 - a true BF2 sequel, but instead got consolized port with many teamplay features removed and absent tacticallity.
    Also, I believe DICE already knows what game they want to make. It was obvious back with BFBC2 and BF3, that they want to compete with COD, making series lot more casual and run-n-gun with just vehicles and other old gimmicks.

That era of Battlefield is still what i consider the REAL Battlefield Experience, though I still have a soft spot for Titan mode in 2142 over pretty much anything in BF2. It feels to me like the vehicular gameplay is what has suffered the most with the newer games, Turning into more of an arcade powerup rather than the devestating force multipliers that they were previously. The commander and all his toys being physically on the map was super interesting too, and assasinating him/blowing up his stuff was pretty much the entire purpose of the Spec Ops class, which they merged into the sniper role in later games once that got nixxed.

      Eh, Squad is the successor to Project Reality Mod, I reckon (early) Planetside 2 was the spiritual successor to BF2/2142. It had the same focus on teamwork and coordination while retaining large scale (larger infact) and the combined arms approach.

    i still play bf2 lan via hamachi with a group of friends (we made our own mod and maps plus some maps from others. we enjoy the 5 vs 50 bots feel of it. we even keep tweaking stuff to this date). the bf2 experience is indeed unique. i could only think of bf3/bf4 being mod-able to come even close.

    To me BF@ was the best and most fun Battlefield game to date. It didnt matter what was going on it was fun. From sneaking to find enemy commanders and their equipment to watching the ragdolls of players fly into the air after being hit by artillery. It also didnt matter if you were winning or losing as the game could turn at the last second. Cant recall how many games I played where the winning team only had 10 or less tickets. Heck even had a number of games that were won with 1 ticket remaining, Those close games were the best because everyone fought to win and worked together to do so.

    The thing that gets me the most is that these games are supposed to evolve forward and EA were supposed to LEARN from the games they made but they have just been going backwards since bf2. On another side note 2142 was super epic too even if it was a reskin with some extra stuff. Helicarrier boardings were dope.

    Battlefield 2 is also my favourite. I played with Begrip and xGx for several years. In my opinion one of the main aspects that made Battlefield 2 so good was the maps, and how they were beautifully designed to work in 16, 32 and 64 player modes.. For clan matches the 16 player versions was perfect, and gave a small tension battleground to play on, while for Big Wars and public Mayhem the 64 player maps with planes and many flags played very well. Also speed and functionality was in focus. Simply just looking at the camo-rose that came with BF2 vs today shows the whole story really.. The BF2 camo-rose would instantly pop up on the screen as soon as you pressed the button, and you could right away move the mouse in the direction you wanted to toggle the right option - this meant you learned where each option was and within a splitsecond gave the right commands. Today (and every single BF ever since) there is a focus on the graphics of the UI, so the commo-rose animates into play, and in addition you have to move the mouse and hit each of the options - all of this takes more time and more precision with the chance you could miss an option.. this is a huge step back from something that was perfect in BF2, and I feel the same step backwards has happened all over the gameplay.. Tanks in BF2 vs tanks in BF1 and BFV.. wow, the tanks in BF2 are just so much better balanced.. running out of shells and having to drive back to main to restock... just does not add any fun or usefull function to the game.. And while I think BF1 actually had some decent maps, and I think the graphics and physics are awesome, it still don't play near as good as BF2 did - and I think among the reasons is the map designs.. go back to more focused map design for conquest - and make them 16, 32, 64 which worked really well.. and in BFV where there are versions of maps made to fit into a singleplayer campaign, like the ruined city and non-ruined versions... it just is a mess to play.. the cinematic narrative should really not affect level design - as it has proven to make some really bad maps imo.. I agree with Bns that it's the focus that needs to get back.. a focus around the gamemode in which the maps shall be played, and then focusing on how to make the maps play well for that - and design ui elements (like camo-rose) to be as fast and snappy as possible.. and just look back at how things were back in the day when it was at it's best - I believe all of these things can go hand n hand with amazing physics, destruction and graphics which the frostbite engine provide.

It was one of the most striking and forward thinking engines on the market. The game was absolutely top tier in the graphical department and you needed a top of the line computer to max it. It was a lavish production on all fronts.
