You hear a lot of people nowadays criticising how AFL boards fire, and rightfully so sometimes. But in the so-called perfect 90s teams were doing stuff like this to coaches. What the heck.
Such a great bloke and a legend at Williamstown and Footscray. The board were wanting success way too early and weren't looking at what he'd achieved in such a short time. I hope Luke Beveridge doesn't find himself looking for a job if the dogs don't start well this year!!!
Definitely something unspoken between Wheels and Doug: "Were they Doug?" Definitely got dumped by the players over something that happened during the pre-season.
Reportedly what happened was that Wheels wanted to replace Hawk as skipper, but his choice of replacement was overruled (Wheeler reportedly wanted Simon Atkins, Board got their way with Scott Wynd, due to several injuries Mark Hunter was Joyceys choice of fill in)
Wheels was harshly treated by the board. Sacked so early in the season. Alan Joyce wasn't a successful coach for the Dogs

Wow, sacked on the back of pre season form. Unreal.
Same with Wayne schimmelbusch sacked on preseason form. North Melbourne 1990s

Looking back. How bad is that.
Todd Curley ended up with a successful career at the Bulldogs
STRANGE DAYS
Just imagine if a team did this today.
AFL AGAIN ?
