North fan here, same as the above. Although probably more relevant for us atm
Richmond and Melbourne owe the Cats a lot for demolishing them so badly they've both needed total rebuilds which resulted in premierships.

Soccer is a great game for women
My family is split between Richmond and Melbourne. For years we had to grin and bear it but to know that regardless of the on field form the clubs are fit and healthy.
The show was at its peak during this era. Took it's toll mentally on Gary but it created gold television.

Yeah that was a long time coming. Just did not take over that side the way he should have, and like St Kilda with Scott Watters and Carlton with god knows how many coaches, probably also Essendon after the supplements saga and Gold Coast with Eade even, there were issues there beyond his control unfortunately. He's talked about it since as has Peter Jackson.

I'll never forget being there that day. Eating a chicken wrap, watching them get absolutely pulvarized. Looking up the records we broke on the V-Line home.

Geelong was still an absolute gun side at that point, even without Ablett. Won the flag that year of course. Yes Melbourne were in a state but I doubt they beat you guys regardless.
Just as an aside, the club developed a great culture over the preceding probably 5 years or so and that's lasted really right up to this very day. Quite remarkable really.

Sad really. For all that's said about Garry Lyon these days (and rightly so in some ways) I'll never forget his tribute to Jim. A remarkable person that isn't talked about anywhere near enough these days, and it really is a shame he never got to see that flag. May he rest in peace
No football result can compare in any way to the deaths of reasonably young men.

This was one of the most hilarious games of football ever
It was all leading to something :-). This loss lead to the Mark Neeld catastrophe (although he did bring in Jason Taylor) which Forced the AFL’s hands to get Roos and Jackson.., then Goodwin/Yze and Williams and Burgo…, then premiership. 😊
It was a long road. Im 35 and feel like those years from about 2009 when I was 21 just flew by and were empty in terms of the dees. We butchered our high picks with watts, scully and trengove and just never improved. I honestly dont think roos did a great job with us either. In his last game we got smacked by 100p. Goody was the key and is on a different level. The new age coach. Then hitting our picks like trac, oliver, brayshaw etc
@@skillsmachine9164doing a good job wasn't the point of getting Roo's, it was to buy time. They knew Melbourne was going to be a long term project (as Goodwin found out in his first few years) but they also knew they had to get supporters back on board, and if someone of his stature was willing to come well maybe some decent people would come with him, and slowly but surely suporters would buy back in. If they'd appointed Goodwin off the bat, and he'd got Roos' results (which was probably inevitable) guess what? You'd be back to square one because just like Mark Neeld, who the hell's Simon Goodwin? Incidentally, Roo's has been probably the only coach to date who's implimented a successful succession plan (time will tell with Sam Mitchell I guess, it had a horrible start). Peter Jackson talked about this on his episode of the SACKED podcast, said pretty much everything I said actually.

Even Geelong - some people forget the Cats went 44 years without a flag prior to 2007.
They did make a bunch of Grand Finals during that time period though. 1989, 1994 and 1995 come straight to mind. @@wallacerose8663

It’s a bit unfair how folks on the board can be so prominent in media, folks forget Gary put pressure on eagles to stop tanking when Melbourne were doing the exact same thing.
Let me tell you one thing as Melbourne fan, Lyon has never given the club any free outs. He has been one of the most harshest critics over the course of 10+ years before our flag. He isn't afraid to give the club a whack and on numerous times, especially during the earlier periods, he has never taken any prisoners.
He has never let his passion for the club get in the way of his professional duties as a media pundit. Also, the AFL concluded that Melbourne didn't tank. Even if Melbourne were found to be tanking, every club has done it to some degree. Just look at Collingwood in 05 when they got both Thomas and Pendlebury as part of their early picks or even a higher end club like Fremantle in 2015 resting 11-12 players so they could be fresh for finals. How is that not tanking and significantly influence a result?
It's the AFL's fault for having a system that allowed it. Blaming a sole club for exploiting the system is just hiding away from the issues that resides within the system.

He was crying bout eagles taking when dees were doing th exact same thing.... also I wouldn’t trust him around my wife or kids

People were definitely grateful. He wasn't coaching Melbourne in 2018, but after that first finals win against Geelong, people were chanting his name after the game

The AFL literally pulled you out of the grave. The club did nothing but fold like a pack of cards, and ask its "Rich parents"'to fix the problem.
The Dees are one of the least supported clubs from Melbourne from what I've seen. It's cool that you guys have turned it around but not winning a premiership for 57 years must have really hurt the supporter base.
