I bowled for over 30 years as a one handed bowler, the had damage to my forearm and bicep in the military and could no longer properly hold the weight of the ball (even as low as a 12lb ball) through the swing. So I trained on bowling two-handed to see if I could back into the game. The amount of stress relieved off of my right arm by the help and support of the left hand in two-handed bowling was a great welcome. I can once again play one of my favorite leisure sports and enjoy the game. For those that have an issue with it - they just really need to get over it. Things change, and just because they don't like it, doesn't mean it's a bad thing. These same people that have an issue with not "bowling properly, they way it 'should' be" are the same types of people that had an issue with mixed-race dating and the introduction of the forward pass in football...

At this point the only bowling sin I care about is when a league/tournament house is bought up and turned it into a laser light show night club. But that's another issue.
4 years ago I switched to bowling without my thumb, so I guess I'm in between styles.
I think there is a feeling that it's not fair, b/c anyone can just walk in and hook the ball all over the place. But to get to a higher level, there are many problems two handers face, that are easier for those using thumb. You really need to be physically fit to execute and of course getting speed on the ball. Enter a sport shot tournament and watch a two hander who doesn't know how to project the ball down the lane, and it'll look ugly.
I think if I switched to bowling without my thumb 15 years ago I would have had to suffer through a lot of negative comments. But now, almost no one cares (or says anything). At least with my style, most people realize that it took some work to learn how to hold the ball, but with two handers, it can look so easy.
The thing I have been working on, which I don't think some people like, it being able to switch to bowling with my thumb later in tournaments. Haven't done it much, but I think it comes with that sense of being an unfair advantage. Other people have only one style, and there here is this guy that has two.
The time when it did work, I finished a duel pattern tournament bowling no thumb on one lane, thumb other lane, just made match play, and then won a two game match doing that. Ended up with people coming after me that I can't no thumb the ball I use with my thumb, (as if I don't know the rules). The finger pitches and weight are different, I couldn't use a ball both ways even if I wanted to.
I did not switch styles b/c I wanted to hook the ball. I simply love bowling, and wanted to be good enough to compete on sport shots and tournaments, but also have some hand issues. After decades of trying I had to be realistic that there is only so much I can do as a thumb bowler.
If two hand bowling helps to keep bowling alive as a sport, I'm all for it.

I'm a big fan of the two-handed style. It's what got me into bowling. I saw the things that Jesper and Belmo would do, and I instantly loved it. If it wasn't for me watching two handed bowling, I would never have even continued to try bowling. Both have their pros and cons. It's easier to create revs with two handed, but it's harder to create ball speed as well as its harder to maintain proper timing. with one handed bowling, speed is no issue, timing is a bit more straight forward, but revs are harder to come by. I have a lot of respect for good one-handed bowlers because its hard and I think people need to also realize that two handed is hard too in its own way. I think it balances out. It's just what path you choose to take.

I started out one handed thumb in. My dad was always showing me PBA shows and one of his favorites was Belmo. I went to a tournament one time, and was just performing terribly. I said screw it, and started throwing it two handed, and I clawed my way back up the leaderboard. Not necessarily because I was executing shots better, but because I was having fun, and I got out of my own head. I never bowled consistently with my thumb in ever again. I think people forget while watching the top level bowlers that for many of us, bowling is a passtime, it's just a game, and the game should be fun. If people have more fun getting all the revs they can on the ball and watching it hook from gutter to gutter, what's wrong with that?

There is no two handed bowler, the fact that one person carries the bowling longer with two hands then another doesn't mean there two handed bowler, I can prove this with a video of Jason Belmonta in super slow motion, at the point of release Jason' s left hand is completely away from the bowling ball.
Much can be said about two handed, ask yourself why the bowling ball does not have a finger hole or two for the opposite hand drilled in it ?

Walter Ray Williams Jr seems to disagree. Youth will always have an edge physically, even one handed. Look at EJ Tacket. He's not going to be able to bowl like that at 55. 2 hand doesn't mean you have to be all contorted. It's nice if you can do it but you can throw it 2 handed with a more upright stance. I'll be 50 this year with a bad back and knees. I'm just now starting to give 2 handed a try and so far it is going well. It's a lot easier on my hand and forearm.

Two-Handed bowling does come with a huge advantage. There really is no debating this.. It has the best of both worlds from 1-handed traditional bowling, and cupped 2-finger style. It gets revolutions and side-axis rotation far more easily, and it also allows you to use your whole body to attain more push and power. I dont have anything against 2-handed bowling, and I think if it legal, then the people who utilize it are smart.. But to say its not an advantage is wrong.. PBA had to pretty much make patterns so difficult to cut down on the 2-handed advantage which is why we now see so much urethane and straight shooting lol.. Its actually kinda hilarious.

For yall two handed haters, if yall dont like where the sport is heading then dont bowl period. Basketball players use two hands to shoot a ball and a basketball weights less than a bowling ball, so you think a hooper will be consistent shooting with one hand from the three point line when the length from the 3 point line to the basket is almost the same length as the bowling lane? Sports evolved whether you like or not, only thing you can do is adapt if youre falling behind using an old techniques. Just like Belmo said, why change the way I choose to bowl when I’m beating you? I bowl both, started as three finger then converted to two hand, not to mention EJ is my favorite bowler in todays bowling era. Try a new sport if you cant beat the competition because complaining wont change anything, it will only leave you behind.

2 hander here, I've been bowling semi seriously since I started college and now that im out of college I've been going to my local bowling center even more and trying to perfect my game. I agree that its easier to learn in the beginning but I believe that getting consistent with the style is just as hard as 1 handed bowling. I've been trying for years to get my average up to a 200 and im still to this day stuck at around 180 (my lane reading skills and spare game still need some work). I love the challenge of learning the game and for whatever reason i just find more joy in bowling with 2 hands than with 1. The power and the rev rate I can achieve with this style is much more satisfying to me than with 1 hand (however thats probably due to my lack of training in 1 handed timing and the presence of my wonder muscles, wonder where they're at). I dont care what anyone thinks I will always stick with 2 hands

I have nothing against 2-handers (and I'm a 1-handed righty and lands on my right foot like Lou Campi), but with all of that power and with all of those rpms, not only is it a two-hander's biggest strength, it's also their biggest weakness, especially true on certain patterns like Wolf, Cheetah, and Viper as there is little to no hold inside of target. Getting to the dry parts of the lane early causes the ball go through the middle or crossover. The US Open pattern is also like this as it's incredibly flat, with no hold inside and it won't turn the corner if outside of target. What the Jason Couch's and Mike DeVaney's of the world don't ever mention is that sometimes a player goes to two hands or does the 1-handed, no-thumb method is because of medical reasons like a missing thumb, other problems with their hand, wrist, arm, etc. Some will just pull a Tom Daugherty or Mike Miller just use the 2-fingers and no-thumb method. If it works, it works. It doesn't bother me one bit.

It’s comical hearing people call themselves “traditionalists” or “old school” while using reactive resin bowling balls on synthetic surfaces oiled by an oiling machine. All inventions that were lightyears away at the original time of true “old school” or “traditional” bowling.
Walter Ray Williams Jr himself once left a facebook comment in reply to someone hating on two handing. He told that person that true old school bowling is done with a wooden ball with one fingerhole and one thumbhole. He’s right. Essentially every single two handed hater is a complete hypocrite.
What shocks me the most is that so many people have the misconception that both hands are used to rev the bowling ball. Anyone with a remote clue about the physics of bowling knows that this would be impossible to do effectively. They all release with the same one hand and two fingers as any thumb-in bowler. Two handing simply requires more flexibility and athleticism to perform effectively. It is absolutely an athletic advancement in technique.

I'm a one hander myself and I don't mind it at all. However, I am beginning to doubt if high revolutions are necessary with modern bowling balls. They are so angular at the break point and they hardly deflect when they hit the pins. I've recently returned to bowling after not playing for many years, and I am shocked at how many pocket 7-10s and 4-9s I see now; washouts and splits are also far more common. I've started experimenting with a suitcase grip due to the frustration of over/under lane reactions. Early days, but my carry has improved and I'm not having to move as often. Current balls used: Motiv Venom Shock, Hammer 3D Offset Attack.

I have been a two hander for almost 30 years now. I started when I was in the military and now just turned 50 and still get it down the lane at 18-19 mph and over 500 rpms.

Especially in senior leagues with older players, the reactions were vicious. Now with more two handers it is better. But still many in leagues and tournaments for seniors don’t like it still. They somehow think I have an advantage. I am 70 now. I bowl right and left two handed.

When bowling was at its peak viewership and participation, it had a lot less to compete with as far as activities go (at one point it was more viewed than the other major sports on TV). I presume that 2-handed bowling could only help attract people to the sport. I tried it once and hurt my wrist, and realized that it's not easy to do, so if people think it's an advantage, then why don't they just do it?

So there could be a new strategy that helps a professional athlete do better then becomes “meta,” but fans might not find it as entertaining. And they’re entitled to view it like that. Professional sports are a business as much if not more than a skills competition.

Whenever you have a sport with traditions, some segment of the population will complain when somebody starts doing non-traditional things. Those complaints will be quite a bit louder if that person also finds success. The important thing is that you need to determine if the "new" way of doing things is in some way an unfair advantage, and with two-handed bowling I'd say that's not the case. While I personally don't care for the style I also don't see any valid reason for banning it.

in tennis (I speak from experience playing the sport at a high level for decades and also hitting a one-hand backhand), you have to still master a number of different shots (serve, forehand, volleys, overheads etc...) and also maintain superior conditioning and athleticism. So yes, on certain surfaces (clay and slow high bouncing hardcourts), a two handed back hand may have an advantage, but it will not mean they have an overwhelming advantage, and a one-handed backhand player can still be highly competitive at the highest levels of the sport. What I worry about with bowling (and no, I am fine with two handed bowling), is that we are potentially eliminating options on how to play this sport at a high level. In tennis, yes two-handers are becoming the norm, but the nature of the sport has not (and probably will not for sometime) precluded a one-handed backhand player from competing.
Btw, please keep up the excellent content, you are probably the only bowling channel that is actually tackling substantive topics that impact the sport.

Bowling is a battle between the bowler and the pins. It is not about one bowler against another. Bowling is an offensive game and there is no defense. Once the ball leaves the hand, it is on its own; all one can do is watch. A two-handed bowler has as many trials and tribulations on the lane as a one-handed bowler. Skill with a bit of good luck often rises to the top and the top-ranked bowlers on tour often have a staff of coaches, endless access to lanes, and ball sponsors to help them stay on top of their game.

I may have to video-answer to this, as a couple of points there are dubious. The "problem" with 2 handed style, is that bowling already contained a lot of imbalances as a game, and this one is another one and a big one at that. It basically makes bowling a different game. It's not the "use 1 hand to deliver the ball, gracefully'. It is becoming the "hurdle the ball any way you can with speed and revs towards an area". And that part is kinda sad.

I do believe 1 handed is definitely more impressive when mastered and is more difficult to master, I just can't due to wrist injuries so 2 hand is my go-to. But it should be able to live as 1 sport with many styles instead of being so segregated.
