Due to wrist and shoulder issues I switched from a normal right hand fingertip grip to Sarge Easter Grip in 2017 at 43 years old. Then I switched from 1h righty Sarge Easter to 2H lefty in 2021. It took until 2023 before I was legit pretty good again, and I'm still not back to where I was 1H righty... but I'm getting really close.

I’m 37 and switched to two handed April ‘22 and never looked back! I played around with it prior and decided to try it as my normal throw after struggling with lower back issues and fighting the thumb (I was surprised how much easier it was the lower back vs traditional!). It’s going to be interesting 10 years from now seeing more people in their 40’s and 50’s throwing 2 handed. It’s also crazy knowing that Walter Ray Williams Jr got a few 300 games throwing 2-handed!

@@jasend8727 since I started almost 2 years ago, by back has never felt better! My company hosts a bowling league and I was hesitant to join because of those issues (my wife convinced me to at least give it a try). I used to have bad spasms and sciatic pain in the legs and it’s been mostly subdued, just a flair-up every now and again. I’ve been crediting bowling as the reason why because it’s keeping my muscles strong and flexible, especially since I developed proper two handed form.

Well 2 finger bowling has been around forever. That's what we did as kids. I'm 44 now so 2 finger bowling 30 years ago wasn't a big deal. I think only 1 pro was successful at it at the time. A few local guys did it. The stability for me was always the problem. Whoever decided to add the other hand in the backswing is a genius cause that corrected the stability issues of bowling with 2 fingers. Generating ball speed will always be the biggest hurdle. Watch early Bella Castillo videos at 11 or 12. Now at 14 she's throwing 18 mph.

  • @jasonsmith3537

I switched to 2-handed at 43 and now 46 and have no issues. In fact, it has removed any strain on body I get from 1-handed like wrist etc....and it has allowed me to be more flexible as I get low to the ground etc. My team mate also rolls 2-handed at 47 and we are both 16-17mph - 200+ avg bowlers. I had same issue with speed when I switched.....It isn't arm swing speed that hurts your speed...It's keeping your elbow in, arm tight to body, and letting your feet and whole body throw the ball. I was throwing 13mph no matter how hard I threw it.. Once I tucked in.... my speeds ramped up to 15-16...and now I roll around 16.30 on my cross-lane balls and about 17.10 on my skid-flips. Also, people think 2-handed is how you throw.... nope.. That left hand is your thumb.. It simply holds the ball in your other hand.

Felt good but my body didn't like it my chest muscles hurt the next 3 days after league night so I hung it up and went back to one handed

Took me a long time to relearn but it reignited my passion for the sport and now I'm doing better than I ever was. I could never get the ball to hook as a one hander and always had problems with my thumb getting stuck. Two-handed just suits me better.

I’m interested to throw 2 handed to relieve pressure from my hand.
At the start of summer I messed around and did 5 serious practice games 2 handed. I was getting my ball speed faster by the end but it was definitely a struggle.
My rev rate probably wasn’t wildly different but I was able to adjust my rotation pretty easily since I didn’t have to worry about my thumb clearing, so that was nice.
I felt like my accuracy by the end was actually pretty strong. Without having to worry about the thumb clearing it eliminated one variable that can cause directional screw up.
If I had practice time, I would probably do a transition after 4 or 5 practice sessions and see how it went for a few months.

Good for you for trying! I switched to two handed at 39 due to a thumb-side wrist injury (after 30 years of bowling one handed). I'm 43 now. Two handed is the only way I've been able to bowl pain free in the last 10 years.
My experience, I was slightly speed dominant one handed. Two handed I became very rev dominant (rev rate increased around 100rpm and the ball speed dropped a bit). I, too, have had difficulty gaining ball speed, but it's getting better a few years later. Can consistently keep my speed in a range from 15mph to around 18mph, depending on what I'm looking for.
The challenge I see now is overcoming all the one handed muscle memory and preventing myself from accidentally reverting back to a one handed approach by accident. Happens maybe 3-4 times per set, but it definitely impacts my scoring when it happens.
Keep up the great content! I always look forward to your latest videos!

I think the two handed power game is doing to bowling what it did to tennis, pretty much shortening the life span of the competitors to a max of mid 30's.
Competitors will start young and achieve a lot in their prime years, but once the years come on they are pretty much done. The toll on the body is simply too much.
I seriously doubt Belmo or Simo will be winning tournaments in their 50's like Norm or many of the great bowlers of the past were able to or winning the US Open at 49 like Pete Weber did.

  • @zachleyes5588
    @zachleyes5588 6 месяцев назад +1

The key to ball speed when bowling two handed is your legs and the momentum you build in your approach. Relying too much on your arms to throw the ball leads to inconsistency and you will find that you will be very inaccurate throwing with your arms. Like in one handed ball throwing the ball with your arm is bad and good one handed bowlers have a pendulum swing and rely on gravity to power the ball. Eliminating as much upper body movement is the key for accuracy and your legs generate the power. Having a power step such as a hop or shuffle step before release should grant you more ball speed. Footwork is extremely important when bowling two handed and differs a lot from one handed bowling.

I bowled a few games a couple summers ago. I wasn't good enough to attempt to bowl leagues with two hands. This summer I am going to give it a better effort. As a life-long athlete, I am planning on practicing all summer (70 games) with the 2-handed approach and release in hopes of creating more revs and power. There's a few things you can do to make getting speed/accuracy more consistent. One being your timing you don't start your swing until step 4, when you should be entering your swing around the 2nd or 3rd step. Another tip is to suck the ball up into your body instead of trying to pull the ball behind you. -- I've been toying with making the change for the last couple of years, and will be finally making the switch starting this fall season. (Wanted to be able to average 210+ before bringing it to real competition) it makes more sense once the fundamentals are locked in.

    • @CliftonDon74

I agree. The switch to 2 hands is definitely a process. Going full time with this type of change would take a lot of practice over a substantial amount of time. Hitting to the gym a few times per week benefits everyone with any bowling style. It makes the bowling motions effortless and fluid as compared to forcing the ball downlane and manufacturing ball motion with a weaker body. Good luck with 2 hands this season!

I’m 68 and have played only 16 games two handed with 15 lb and 13 lb balls. The best part of this experiment is I keep the first ball out of the gutter. That is the most important part if the game for me. Secondly less stress on my shoulder and arm. Only more time will tell, but I think in time may keep me bowling longer. Throwing the first ball in the gutter every once in a while during league play when bowling one handed due to loss of arm swing control Is no fun. Two handed if practiced may help with enjoying the sport a little while longer.

I switched from bowling w/ my thumb to without 5 years ago. I made the switch due to some hand issues which make it impossible for me to properly hold the ball with thumb and fingertip grip.
I did not go to 2-handed because simply taking my thumb out of the ball seemed to be an easier transition. It honestly wasn't and has taken a much larger focus on health and fitness off the lanes to get better bowling as I do now.
But bowling 2-handed seemed to require even more flexibility and strength, at least to get started.
I still use my thumb for spares and started to practice strike shots again with thumb, using a stretched conventional grip. In so many ways it's much easier. If I could have just put my thumb in ball and had even a 220 rev rate with consistent release I would never have switched. If I had my current thumb drilling 5 years ago... even with a 180 rev rate, I may have been happy with that. Ironically, once I stopped shooting strike shots with my thumb, and only needed to get something I could hold for spares... started slowly tweaking things to feel more comfortable with spares. And now my thumb game much better now than it used to be.
I bowl a lot of local scratch and sport shot tournaments. 2-handed bowlers while present, are not poised to take over. For a while it seemed that they would. And over time we will see more and eventually on the women's side. But is it really a for sure thing that it's the best way for most people to bowl?
I bowl mostly scratch tournaments in NJ. And the really top bowlers I see, are not 2-handers.

First thing first, your swing as a 2 hander should not be what creates ball speed, it’s all in your legs. I can throw a 600+ rev rate while not “muscling” the ball whatsoever, thanks to my legs giving me the speed.

I just started bowling In February. I'm 40 years old and I basically started with one hand bowling and just this weekend. I tried two hand bowling and it. It came to be that I feel more comfortable Bowling to handed. The 3 times I went bowling. One-handed, my games were coming out. Just a little over a 100. But with my 2 handed games. I did a lot better and I bowled over 200.

A lot of the two handed bowlers that we see are pretty violent in their approach. I would like to see how they bowl in their 50’s and 60’s. I hurts just watching them. I predict many will have to change their game drastically to continue bowling as a senior. Which is why I’m glad I learned the conventional way

Pretty good effort there, Nick! I'm bowling some with 2 hands, and I also am a certified coach. That's why I'm trying it; I want to be able to at least sympathize with the 2-handers that I coach. I would not recommend the switch for anyboyd over maybe 30 yrs. of age. My main concern is the potential for injuries and pain. Bowling is supposed to be fun, not painful.

A month ago we bowled a 50 year old guy who had changed to two handed. He is big, probably around 275 pounds. I say to my buddy "since when has he been two handed?" He says less than a year. That night, a month ago, he bowled 800 on the nose. That is when I said maybe I should try two-handed too, but I'm 67. On the other hand I started skiing in 1969 and when snowboarding came out I didn't feel like trying it and never have.

when i hurt my ring and pinky fingers i had to switch to 2 handed for like a month almost, i bowled like 50 undee my average most if the time and my rev rate was insanley uncontrollably high aswell as my ball speed like 4-5 mph slower. i think learning 2 handed from nithing would be easier than switching due to muscle memory an all that stuff but 2 handed bowlers have as much skill as 1 handed bowlers and they work just as hard so i dont really see a problem with it like some pple

I tried it a few times, and for me, I feel too restricted. My hand comes out the ball weird and it's just not for me. But at the same time I feel like a lot of kids start with 2 handed bowling cause they can't hook the ball alot or don't have a good grip on the ball to have the ball hook.

  • @vance836

Been a two hander for about 30 years now. Obviously being a two hander means your arm swing is much shorter as it is impossible to get the backswing over your shoulders. So the speed has to be generated from your feet. But as you mentioned that you plant instead of slide; it would be almost impossible to generate ball speed using your feet and if you tried; you are likely to blow your left knee out. I bowled "normal" for 12 years before I converted over and it was by sheer accident. I am now 50 years old and still get it down the lane at 19mph at release and rev rate in the 525 -550 range.

I'm 34 yeara old, and I tried to do two handed in the past. I was horrible at it. I did it for practice. My speed as one hander is 18 to 19 miles. When I tried two hands, my speed was down to 16 to 17. Would I try it again? Sure. Am I against two handers? No, if they comfortable doing it, I say let them do it. My advice for you is just go what you are comfortable with and stick with it. If you want to change it up its your call. That's my advice.

I started bowling when i turned 27. I am 31 now and at first I threw it like TD and did 1 handed no thumb and saw that the pros were throwing 2 handed. My stability went up with the other hand. I didn't have ball speed at first nor forward roll. Learned to use my legs and be much more up the back of it. So I usually play 1st/2nd arrow on most sport shots cuz that's where the 1 handers played and learned off that. You can for sure play closer to the right. Layouts help a ton to have the ball play where you want to.
    (Edit)
Well your 2 handed release looks great :D. Just the timing is going to take a bit if you do switch to get back to your ball speed for 1 handed, and even then it wont reach it unless you run to the line (wouldn't recommend that). I can see you using it if you had to get deep inside or on something (as you mentioned) with a lot of length and volume.

Thanks for filming yourself go through the motions and thought process of switching. I've tried and failed several times to switch from one handed to two. I haven't even been bowling seriously for a whole year yet and it's still hard to reprogram my brain to change my approach and how I hold the ball. Heck, last night in league I was so jealous of a couple of my opponents throwing two handed a 4mph faster twice the revs. The rack was absolutely exploding! I'm sure I'll give it another try again soon and just hope something clicks.

I switched to 2-handed about 8 months ago and i turned 50 in April.
It has been a transition but im so glad i was stubborn enough to stick with it as i am so much more consistant now and have really understood how to adjust speed and rev rate 2-handed. Having a decent spare (plastic) ball is very important also though for those horrible 10 pins as a right hander.
Having recently joined a league with my 17 year old son, i can really see the benefits of 2-handed too as i find it much less of an issue with my 50 year old body too lol!

I'm of the opinion that if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you've been throwing it one-handed since the day you learned to walk, don't change. With that said, I was perfectly content when I was throwing it one-handed for years. It was how I was taught, it was how I knew the game. When I first saw the two-handed style, when Osku made his T.V. debut, I really didn't much of it at the time, and as I saw the style becoming more and more popular over the years, I was starting to see its advantages. I tried it myself, but I decided against switching, because as I mentioned earlier, if there's nothing wrong with your current game don't change. But, that didn't last unfortunately. The years of bowling with a stretched grip took their toll on my tendons in my hand, and I was having serious pain radiating up my arm. I shortened my span four times throughout an entire league season and went from a respectable 215 average to a dismal 185. I tried the two-handed style once again, and to my surprise I was pain free and able to bowl at the intensity I was able to when I was a one-handed bowler. I tried it in league for the first time the following season and shot 268 the first game. From that point on, I've been throwing it two-handed and have never looked back. It was roughly 8 years ago when I made the switch. You can say that two-handed bowling is what saved me from quitting the game. Feels good to bowl with no pain.
