I really like what you did at the beginning: the establishing shots, getting out the car in slowmo - by jumping forward to the beat, this enabled you to shoot slow, but move forward quickly at the same time. By mixing the b-roll shots in the shop before he arrived, you were able to tell the viewer where he was going before he got there! Very clever. Good choice of music too.
I would have had the barber talk about why he chose his career and what he loves about it and then had the shots you used as b-roll to enhance the story. Probably would have had some interviews with his clients talking about why they love the service so much too or communicated written testimonials in a creative way to provide some extra social proof for his brand.
Great job! The one thing I would like to point out is that he parked right in front of the doors to his shop... that doesn't send a welcoming message to his clients who will have to park further away and walk in... owners and employees should never park right in front - those spots are for the clients :)
Hello Jason. The video quality and the cuts were clean, precise and had a nice flow. However, if this was a "promotional video" for a Barber...his audience would like to see his work. Instead...they saw YOUR work and he became second nature. At the very end...I thought I was going to perhaps see a quick "before & after" of his clients...that would highlight his talents. But instead...a client hugs him and the video is over. We really never saw any "finished products." Again...the videography and your cuts were beautiful, but it was HIS 'cuts' (pardon the pun) that should've taken more priority. Thank you for what do here on RUclips. I've been in the business over 30 years...but always looking for new ideas for my promotional videos.
Hey bro I appreciate the feedback. This is the direction the barber wanted. He wanted a lifestyle video and gave more direction with this. As far as the interpretation of the video, that's subjective brother. This video is nearly a year old and my approach/story telling has changed greatly. Since this video I've been DP on 2 feature films, DOP on 3 TV series, 4x published photographer, generated content for celebrities, professional athletes, and big clothing brands. Granted I've only been doing video for 2 years, I've been an editorial photographer now for 4. Being that I am self taught, it's constructive feedback like this that helps me train my eye more. Like I mentioned I really do appreciate the feedback and this was when I was really first starting out as a content creator. The best thing about being a creative, is that we get to bring our clients vision to life. We can give them subjective feedback like the thoughts you had with this video to them to tell a better story. If it was up to me, I would have picked a song with more energy but the client insisted using this one. If the client is happy and likes your work, you've done your job. There endless room to improve as a creator.
Seventhsoncreative Jason I think everything about your video nailed it.... I’ve seen seventhsoncreative work and I don’t think he’s qualified to give feedback....
I suppose nobody is gonna make the appointment because of the video. But… I guess it’s not the purpose of this video. It needs to make you check the author’s portfolio and then decide- do you want to be his client or not
Thanks so much for making this video! I’m shooting a promo video for a friend this afternoon and I was so nervous because I’m a photographer not a videographer but after all these tips I feel way more confident! And sure that I can do it with just your examples and tips!
I really like you interactions, and your approach to criticism. You take people's comments directly on the chin, and use that as an opportunity to improve yourself. It's a beautiful thing to see in a creative, and totally commendable. Wish you all the luck in the world Jason!
This video was so helpful. I’m just starting in this and so far I have a few businesses that are willing to let me come in and do some promo vids. I am doing them for free as I do believe that offering that, building a portfolio first is key. So I’m glad you said that haha.
You were so polite. I really enjoyed it. You didn’t say “subscribe to my channel” , it was “if you’re new consider “ subscribing I liked that . I enjoyed it. 💪🏽
i like how you threw in clips of the haircut during the intro of the promo video. just quick glimpses when he's pulling in with his car. jumping back and forth with time, i like it. thank you Jason
I probably would've had the chair in the middle of the shop to start with and a single light source shinning down on the chair as i came into the shop with a slow motion frame giving it this dramatic look and went from there maybe even shot in black and white
Great Video! Just found your channel. I've been procrastinating for years and finally just got back into it and this video gave me some inspiration. Keep Grinding. New Subscriber.
Wow! That’s a lot of views! You asked for people to say how they would’ve done it. I don’t think any two people would’ve done it the same way. I would’ve gotten some soundbites from the barber and got to know him better personally. One thing I noticed about your video was the color was absolutely superb. Superb colors in the barbershop. Great job.
Love it dude!! I’m just getting into videography myself and love your intro to this video as well as what you were teaching us! Well done, great music, sharp shots. I hope to get to be at your level someday!
I think it needed to be a little bit more of a pumped up song, like I'm going to get my hair donenup... it's not an rnb vibe ... so a track with a bit higher tempo... and just maybe a more warm or contrasty color temp grading style...
Hey bro I appreciate the feedback, The barber shop in general likes desaturated colors for their instagram feed, so what I had to do was copy their aesthetics. I agree with you about the music choise, once again it ws up to the client. The track was not my choosing, the barber is actually friends with that artist and specifically asked me to use that song. Sometimes when working with clients even tho its nice to have creative freedom you will wind up getting clients that want certain things. When they're paying you, as much as you can give your input on their requests, the client at the end of the day has to be happy.
Thanx for this video. I suggest all of us from the video industry finaly come up with some stanardized termonology re. the dfference beween "video" as in You Tube instructonal/infomational Video (a guy or a lady stakn in front of a camera an talking) and video as in pomotional/commercial video (the o e that implies action, outdoor scenaries, a story.....). We should really use two different names for these two different types of videos. Open for sugestions.
I think the barber video I would've done differently. Like I would've preferred if some of the shots weren't static and the color correction didn't really speak to me..
very great video, im going to start trying to leverage some of the skills i have used making my own personal youtube vlogs and shoot promo videos for local food companies, and in turn hopefully build a relationship so i can film mukbangs on my channel or other food content.
Thanx for the tips I'm just starting out doing video business websites with a drone as well ill keep you posted thanx for the invauble info brilliant cheers
Awesome stuff! I don't really do video but I've been wanting to give it a try and you've inspired me to try it out and practice and just create! Thanks!
Great video, dude. I searched 'small business commercials', that's what my channel is completely centered on, and I found your video. This video was great, I'll be able add way more value to the videos I create. Everything I've done has been pro-bono. :) My videos can definitely improve. I'm excited to leverage your ideas! Thanks.
Thanks for the video. I'm booked to film a welcome/tour video for a local business, where the owner is actually going to give us a tour of the facility. The rooms have VERY high ceilings and some machinery noise to work around. I'm wondering, what's the best way to mic him up?
Nice video and great tips. Obviously starting in this business needs some $$$ to be spent on gear. What would you recommend if a person has a low gamma canon camera and a go pro hero. Is it possible to start off with that? Thanks again for the video. I hope to get a response
nice tips bro, i made a promotion video for a friend (he has coffee shop), and i'm not confident enough to film the customers, because my other friend told me they might be mad because i disturb them(so i skipped it). it sucks not be able to film the customers(it made my video missing some point), need some solution pls
Hey man I know this is an old video but we've been good for a while and I'm really stoked to learn from you.. Can't wait to link up finally.. all on the basis of Losangeles Grammers tagging me with you in your feature on Instagram haha. What a small world.
Hey Johnny thank you 🙏🏽 for the tips. That shot at 7:04 how did you do that. I couldn’t tell if it was a vertigo shot or panning to the left. Would love some tips on premier pro. 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Always learning so much with you, thank you for dropping some dimes 💎 keep it up with the content, seems to be forever useful! Now I’m going to apply all I learned on my promo vids 📸
Haha I totally agree! This video is 3 years old and somehow keeps blowing up. I should make a part 2 because I’d do things so differently and have tons of new work DP’ing for Lululemon, Samsung, Microsoft Xbox and more 🤔 you got me thinking!
Hey Guys, I run my own Personal Training company. Let me know if you want some work for your portfolio. I have loads of drone videos etc so I can send all videos over for you to edit.
Hay man, how long did it take you to obviously not master but learn enough to put out quality content and do you have any tips/secrets on how you learned the software?
Hey this video was awesome. Definitely subscribed since I've made so many promos in the past couple weeks. Definitely going to support you. Thanks man!
Really appreciate that! This video is so old and I've worked with so many big brands since. Going to make a 2.0 version really soon! Way more tips coming!
Great content. Maybe I’ll try to also show a view from client side. Like why do they choose this barber over the other. What makes him for *them* special 😉 take care.
Another small tips; you as a photographer /videographer should pay attention to small details like dirty mirrors and other "small things". It is not the end of the world to have dirty mirrors, but it could me much worse. Looking out for these kind of things will help you spot the more important things more easily and help bring your video to an even higher level. You spend so much time on shooting and editing, so it kinda suck having imperfections holding it back.
Uncle Jason, thanks for this ur my savior. I'm staring my 1st promo vid, the thing you've share that sum it up all is this phrase "nothing fancy just tell the story. thanks again uncle Jason.
To be honest, im one that would rather have more to pull selects from than not. At the end of the day youll start to get more and more confident on set and more or less know when you have all your shots!!
That’s a topic you could speak about for hours and you nailed it in less than 10’! Great content once again! Thank you!
Paul Malinic appreciate the feedback Paul, it really means a lot. Find the balance between video length and information can be tricky at times!
Paul Malinic was
Demarias Bailey ??

How do you go about music copyrights? I seem to have the hardest times debating what to do.
Did you shoot the barber video on a gimbal stabilizer or handheld?
This video was so helpful. I’m just starting in this and so far I have a few businesses that are willing to let me come in and do some promo vids. I am doing them for free as I do believe that offering that, building a portfolio first is key. So I’m glad you said that haha.
Wow. Top shot of bro parking! That was an excellent display of creatively shooting a slice of life.
Appreciate it Sean! Means a lot bro!
What did you use for lighting???
You were so polite. I really enjoyed it. You didn’t say “subscribe to my channel” , it was “if you’re new consider “ subscribing I liked that . I enjoyed it. 💪🏽
i like how you threw in clips of the haircut during the intro of the promo video. just quick glimpses when he's pulling in with his car. jumping back and forth with time, i like it. thank you Jason
I really like the music at the start of this video. Any idea who this is? Or where I can find it on the net? Very ambient with dubstep.
I think this video is perfect. The song was perfect- I think it tells a story of a classy barbershop that will attract classy men.
Love the cross cut style, nailed the "vertigo shot" at 7:03..Fine work. Sub.
I probably would've had the chair in the middle of the shop to start with and a single light source shinning down on the chair as i came into the shop with a slow motion frame giving it this dramatic look and went from there maybe even shot in black and white
How do you deal with copy right with the music you use , like the weekend track you played
Great Video! Just found your channel. I've been procrastinating for years and finally just got back into it and this video gave me some inspiration. Keep Grinding. New Subscriber.
Great work bro. Question. ...that track you played for the barber shoot, artist or music producer info ?
Wow, thank you for a great video🎉 You’re having great examples and just laying it all out there for us. Lots of good advice in an effective order👏🏼
how do you get the soundtracks without getting blocked for copyright?
Love the sound at the beginning. Which library is this?
Great job.

Where did you find the song (what is the title and artist) for your barbershop promo video? Love that song and was it on one of the pay sites?
.
are you using a stabilizer for your shots? looks smoooooth
Barbershop video was perfect...I migght have experimentet with different background music though
preferably instrumental...
Totally Agree bro, at this time year back when I dropped this video my client insisted I use this track haha have to make the client happy right!
I think it needed to be a little bit more of a pumped up song, like I'm going to get my hair donenup... it's not an rnb vibe ... so a track with a bit higher tempo... and just maybe a more warm or contrasty color temp grading style...
Agree with the grade. It was lacking there.

Where can I watch your finished videos brother?
Nice tips! The final video was amazing, even I would go get the haircut lol
So for this video, what video program did you use to make this whole project?
Thanx for this video. Nice tips Jason, thanks for sharing!
Good stuff Jason. Thanks for keeping it clean, short and to the point.
How were you able to use this song in your video? In terms of copyright issues that is. Am I missing something?
What software do you use to edit?
Good vid. Good info. Clean advice. And brilliant energy man. Your soul comes through. Your legit. Keep killing it.

Awesome tips man! Could you please tell me the name of the song in the intro and how to get permission to use it?

What fps did you use? I LOVED the shots that you took, but it didn't look as cinematic as I desire. Great Tips btdub!

How much did you charge for that barber shoot?
Great videos Jay!
Awesome video..thank you so much

Very good advice. Thnx!👍
Great tips! I shoot my first promo video tomorrow. This helped a lot.

Heya! I hope you are well! I wanted to ask do you also make promotional videos for people? How much do you charge?
You need to get your hands on some lighting tutorials, it would really up your game:)
Great video man. Much appreciated
Great video man. Question how does the music work? Like can bro just use the promo video with the Weeknd music on it?
Hey man I know this is an old video but we've been good for a while and I'm really stoked to learn from you.. Can't wait to link up finally.. all on the basis of Losangeles Grammers tagging me with you in your feature on Instagram haha. What a small world.

How did you get the non-copyright music?
I have multiple subscriptions to musicbed, artilist, and epidemic sound brother
What frame rate did you record & export in? ?
I filmed in 60fps and 120fps and always work off of and export a 24fps timeline
I'm Jason Anthony much appreciated! Thanks for the Reply

video is nice the only thing i have to say is I'm pretty sure that the music probably would need to be changed since the copyrights.
