More with Fukawa, I could imagine her killing Makoto on a route where you investigate with her. Remember, Genocider kills "Adorable Men"... and I'd argue Makoto is pretty cute. I can imagine Toko having sparking feelings for Makoto, where he'd then try gently turning her down... only for her to later switch, and he'd get nailed to the wall with scissors.
I can also imagine Togami straight up killing Makoto too, I mean... it's a coin flip on whether he would play the game to get out, with no care for people's well being, or whether he would refuse to play along to someone psychotic mastermind's plans.
@@NiiRubra oh definitely, Togami would NOT hesitate if he felt like he had a very high likelyhood of getting away with it... and we know how big his ego is.
I think that Makoto would be pretty nice to Toko and she slowly starts liking him in a platonical way. With these she sees Makoto as a friend and tells him about Genocide. He reacts horrofied and Genocide kills him in the spot so she doesn't lose him. It feels contradictory to Genocide's tactics but I see it weird for that masochist to fall in love with Makoto.
Well some idea cross my mind that: Maybe after Rain Cloud maybe and think maybe Kodaka would start thinking about doing something like distrust right again? That would be super duper nice owo
@@liviwaslost yup but well I would prefer to name them other, buuut alternative Universe would be Perfect too...Like Toko doing her own stuff and trying kill Makoto. Oh and even so when someone would try to kill us in 1v1 situation we could have chance to resist and run. Like adding a stats like who is the fastest and who is stronger ect
I really dig with Distrust's more mature and darkr/worn down/grimy artstyle and overall presentation. The overall victims and executions look a lot more brutal than the final game, especially Kyoko being beheaded by Junko, and Leon stabbing he torso. As a Kyoko fan, I would feel nothing but pain playing these paths lol The choices and the variety of outcomes alone makes Distrust fascinating to me.
Haven't finished the video yet but beheading was supposed to be Junko's execution.. Being terrified of her fate but even more of the audience watching it, being excited for it. Beheading have always been a spectacle after all.. A fitting end for a model in my opinion
i know, it's so cool. i'm working on writing a fangan, and if anything ever comes of it then i'll probably have branching paths (although not EVERYTHING can be changed)
If we ever got Distrust, that would be amazing. I can understand there being concerns or issues about releasing it with those mechanics at first with it being a PSP game and new IP, but I feel like Danganronpa is so popular now, and game development has improved a bunch since then, that Danganronpa: Distrust would go over REALLY well.
Distrust would've been super tricky to write. I think it'd be easy to accidentally create little contradictions or even big ones. Would still love to see something like it though.
Considering how bad the Danganronpa writers are when there's just 1 coherent storyline I think this could've been a major failure if they kept it this way
No matter what, I always hope we one day get a future Danganronpa game with multiple endings, and I mean REAL multiple endings ,not fake out ones, I mean genuine multiple endings like a Silent Hill game with my personal preferences for such ones being: Next Ultimate Hope (True Good End) Sacrifice (Sad Good End) Survivor (Neutral End) Just Another Victim (Murdered End) Psycho (Caught - Blackened End) Monster (Victor - Blackened End) Slave (Brainwashed End) Loyalist (Despair Servant End) Martyr (Lost - Mastermind End) Next Ultimate Despair (Won - Mastermind End) Uh oh! Found a bug, found a bug, found a bug, found a bug! I found a bug! (Joke Ending)
I’d love an end where we get away as the blackened, just because it’s never happened before. It could be combined with the Loyalist ending, because the thought of losing what he once was while everyone else dies could fill him with hopelessness. Maybe, in the blackened end, we watch in a movie theatre sadistically as everyone is executed in their own specific executions. We could have a monologue about how we were “once innocent” but now “find their deaths pleasurable”, because I imagine that the Main Character in this route would slowly start to have his mind deteriorate until he loses himself. Then, Monokuma (whatever he’s called in this version) is going to reveal the truth about the killing game, but MC refuses, because he feels it’s hopeless. And then, he escapes full of absolute despair to spread it to the rest of the “godforsaken world”.
We know for a fact that Danganronpa will have a few joke endings if it went the "Multiple Endings" Route. Silent Hill is famous for its joke ending where the entire game was controlled by a dog.
Not sure if you’ll read this comment but I had a strong burst of interest in Distrust about a year ago… I speak Japanese so I did some digging myself back then. If it’s interesting, here’s some of the info I found that I don’t see as talked about: - What we know as ‘Distrust’ and the images circulated for it, they’re actually three different stages of development for the game. - First version of the game: Monochrome style (1:40 , designs pictured at 0:47). In this version the protagonist was namable by the player- versus the Hopes Peak Academy set up, instead they ‘lost consciousness on their way to school’. - *In this version, the murder game is based around Werewolf/Jinkou and there is no motivation factor. The murderer is chosen by force and MUST murder.* - Monokuma is a weird human thing here instead - The students aren’t ‘Ultimates’ but normal kids Second draft of Distrust: - This is where the more colorful designs came into play. I can’t find a picture for the character designs for this one in the video (LMK if there is one readers and I’ll edit this comment), but it has concept Maizono Sayaka with the glasses and brown hair. The character designs here are a LOT more ‘exaggerated’ IMO and growing towards the style Dangan Ronpa would finally take (the first draft designs were much more realistic with no fantasy hair colors, etc.) - *What is probably of most interest is a mechanic carried over from the first game- when the trial happens, it doesn’t matter if you got the culprit right or wrong. Whoever has the most votes, guilty or innocent, will be executed. This draft shows off the picture of Junko being executed by guillotine- but there’s a good chance rather than this being a personalized execution, the guillotine would have been used for ALL executions to symbolize them being carried out in a sort of ‘mob justice’.* - Bear Monokuma was probably introduced in this second draft, based on the evidence I put together. Third draft- not actually called Distrust anymore, but “The Execution Academy and the Students of Despair”: - The students are no longer normies, but Ultimates - Murder is no longer forced, students kill to escape of their own volition - This is where the Kazuo execution footage came from - This is where I think Dangan Ronpa had really started to show its unique appeal, it was boasted as a ‘new genre’ and toted the 2.5D graphics as a charm point If you ever have any questions about it in the future or my sources, I’m happy to help! I know I’m just a random stranger but I… Really have strong interest in the prototypes of Dangan Ronpa. I have a feeling they would have been enough to make me lose sleep (which I would have welcomed).
Woah... I have never heard anyone to talk about it. I did know that what we see are indeed different builds, but this different? I know that it was long ago, but do you remember where you got your sources for the first two (about it being originally a werewolf style game, and no matter who you choose, they will be executed)?
With the option to basically choose who you would befriend/betray, I feel like each character should have special bonuses or perks that come along with it. Here’s my idea of what I think they would give you. Sayaka: I feel like with Sayaka you could get the bonus of making it easier to obtain information from those who may be more standoffish. Her kindness and the fact she’s a cute girl just seems to make it like she could help people open up more. Leon: with the assumption there’s a way to keep him from being a culprit or victim in the first chapter, I feel like he would be good at seeing things far away. For example, if you’re walking around with Leon he can pinpoint if someone could possibly be closing in on you. Another idea is that he would have enough charisma to lessen the damage the amount of distrust you would gain from doing certain actions or saying certain things. Mondo: With Mondo, I feel like he would have the ability to threaten certain characters for information they normally wouldn’t give. It wouldn’t work for all characters (ex: Byakuya, Sakura), but it could still give you insight they would’ve normally kept to themselves. Unlike Sayaka who helps the more loner characters who wouldn’t be swayed by violent, Mondo would take care of the ones who would be swayed by violence. Chihiro: I feel like after some investment in hanging out with Chihiro (similar to Sakura in the need to hang out and available in the second chapter), you can supply either parts you find or monocoins to Chihiro for them to make inventions for you. The pricier the better. Perhaps a device to tell you if someone is nearby, helping find monocoins, or even analyzing the victims resulting in information you can’t see without a device. Kiyotaka: With Kiyotaka’s desire to keep everything orderly and safe, I can feel that he’d alert the player if he noticed anything suspicious. Anyone roaming around, a weapon missing, things like that, to help the player make safer decisions. Celeste: With Celeste, I can see her being good at calling out bluffs, as someone who has to sometimes make bluffs of her own. I see her skill being mainly useful in the trial, but perhaps she can tell you if someone’s lying to your face in other parts of the game. Hifumi: for Hifumi, I can see him willing to do whatever it takes to help Makoto in the trial. With his… less than intelligent intellect, I see him distracting the others with anime and manga facts and knowledge, leaving less time for those suspicious to give more believable testimonies. Sakura: It shouldn’t be too surprising to see Sakura being able to essentially be your bodyguard. At least saving you from being the victim bad ends. I imagine to balance this power out, it wouldn’t be available until at least the second chapter, where you really have to dedicate your time to becoming friends with Sakura. Junko: Assuming this is non-mastermind like Junko, I feel like she would be good at telling little behaviors off about people. Whether their appearance is off, their expression is more grim. In the fashion business every little detail counts, so Junko could definitely help point out those things. While Kyoko would be good at telling things off about objects, Junko would have the human version of it. Byakuya: with his exorbitant amount of money, I feel like he’d be willing to give you a salary of mono coins per time frame (day? Chapter?) which you can use on the mono mono machine, with the explanation it can help them escape, maybe. With Makoto’s luck, it makes sense Togami would have him be the one to try out the coins. Toko: With toko I feel like she would make it easier to go around without worrying about people able to jump scare you. It’s canon that she reeks so I feel like it’d be difficult for someone to race in without hesitating. It’s not full proof, but it can perhaps let the player act to make the killer not actually kill. Or just run. Syo: I feel like Syo would be excellent at lock-picking. With her skill in using her scissors, I feel like she could unlock areas previously unavailable to the player. (Yes I think they should be different because they have different personalities. Because of the split personality, either one of their skills would be limited to when they’re the one that’s active) Kyoko: with her detective skills, I feel like having Kyoko as a friend could lead to intricate details you the player couldn’t find, perhaps making the trials a bit easier. Yasuhiro: I feel like Yasuhiro would have the ability to narrow down culprits for you. With his fortune telling, he could see the probability of someone being the culprit. It’s not a guarantee he’s right, but it can help the player focus on the more suspicious suspects. Asahina: with Asahina having exercised during the game, I feel like being with Asahina could improve the physical ability of the player. Perhaps move around faster, or just narrowly escape a bad end by booking it. I know I wrote a lot, but it’s fun to come up with ideas like this. I’ll probably comment on this with ideas of how having them distrust you could be a detriment. I just wanted to write this down before I forgot. 😅
Here's my ideas for if each of the characters distrusted you, leading to the issues or obstacles they could present. Sayaka: Seeing as Sayaka is very popular with the guys, I feel like if she distrusted you then it would affect the guys (except Byakuya) since they would be on the side of a pretty girl. Depending on how high the distrust is, the more the boy's distrust would increase over time. Junko: Junko is just like Sayaka, except her influence goes over to the girls (except Kyoko). Her confident nature and the fact I feel like non-despair Junko would be good friends with the girls, her distrust would raise the girl's distrust, with the amount affecting the girls similar to Sayaka. Leon: It took me a bit to think of something for Leon, but I finally came to an idea I'm happy with. Leon would not only be suspicious of you, but any person associated with the player. As such, if the distrust is too high I can see a twist in the game where Leon ends up killing your associate, leaving you alone. Not only that, but he'd leave the others to be suspicious of you. Kiyotaka: His main priority is the safety of others, so if he thinks you're suspicious then he'll try to keep a tight leash on you. Limiting the times you can go out, preventing one-on-one conversations, and simply making it hard for the player to do anything without his permission. Celeste: I feel like with Celeste, she'd want the monocoins given her gambling nature. Who knows what could be found in the monomono machine, right? After a certain checkpoint she would force the player into a gamble. Even with luck, there's barely any chance to win. Even if you won, she'd either just steal the money, or leave. Sakura: As Sakura cares about everyone, the more suspicious she is, the less people she'd allow you to see. Starting with the ones she's closer to (Hina for example), the more suspicious she is, the less people you could see, until you get to a point you can't talk with anyone. This could lead to a secret end. The reason hers is so harsh is to balance out the powerful perk she has (that I came up with). Hifumi: There's no denying that Hifumi is a rather obese character. With the concept of low resources, which includes food, I feel like Hifumi would secretly take some of your food, or even all of it if he completely distrusts you. This could leave the player weakened, perhaps in speed, ability to put clues together, or even a dead end with you dying of dehydration or starvation. Mondo: If Mondo was suspicious of you, I feel like he wouldn't allow you to see the crime scene, as he would think you're trying to cover something up. Perhaps the more suspicious he is, the less places he'd let you look at. Yasuhiro: With him, I feel like if he tried to make predictions concerning you, and it ended up as you as the bad guy, he would instantly tell the others about it. I feel like it would be a chance-like spin to see if he would talk about bad things about you, but with his higher distrust, the worse the things he'd talk about would be, lowering trust from others. Asahina: With Asahina, she's very passionate about those she cares about. As such, if she believed you to be a threat to them, she'd try to hurry up conversations you may have with certain characters, or even limiting the time you can explain things during the trials. Even more, she'd never agree with your vote, even if it's the correct one. Chihiro: They are an excellent programmer, and I'm sure they could create a tracking device. The more they distrust you, the more people they'd allow access to your location. This could lead others to either avoid you, or lead to your death if you become a target and someone knows right where you are. Toko: With her, I feel like she would avoid you, but I also feel like she would try to sabotage you from exploring. To protect her 'precious Byakuya', she'd trap you in places for a time, or even lock doors on purpose so you can't explore. Syo: With her, I feel like it'd be a chance-time-like spin. The higher the distrust, the more likely it will land on the bad end. Syo loves cutting up 'cute, adorable boys', and if it lands on the wrong slot, I feel like she'd find you worthy to kill, leading you to a bad end. Byakuya: It was hard to think of something for him, but I feel like if he distrusted you, he would slowly drain the trust of those who respect him and his skills. Examples would be obviously Toko and Syo, but others like Kyoko, Chihiro, and Celeste would respect his intellect, leading to them also distrusting of you. What makes him different from Sayaka and Junko is while his influence is limited, it would have a more drastic effect, having only a little distrust making his obstacles more dangerous. Kyoko: With Kyoko, I feel like she'd doubt you in the trials, making you go through hoops and hurdles to make her, and as such others, that what you're saying has a point, or is correct. It doesn't really affect the non-trials, but it would be hard to get a conclusion that is good, especially if it's mixed with obstacles like Hina's. What do you guys think? I'd like to hear your opinions of this. Again, sorry for the long length of this comment... I can go overboard with comments sometimes...
@@typicalfangirl2001 While I lover your idea, the distrust debuffs are a bit too harsh. I imagine if you try to get someone's trust to go up, you have to potentially get others to distrust you. This could lead to your investments be for naught if a character that lowers others trust gets too low or only having 1 person trusting you the entire game.
Man I love your ideas of how the trust and distrust system could work with each character! Makes me wish Distrust was real as these are too cool concepts to pass off.
The idea of having the top 3 most voted for culprit being visible is a very interesting one, that I would love to see in a game like this, though I guess that's just a more mechanical way of representing existing tensions that do carry over from chapter to chapter, even if this system did not make it into the final game, the tensions were there. Kyoko may have been falsely accused, as it turned out to be the case in the finished game, maybe that idea was there from the beginning. Also damn, Junko beheading and dismembering her? That's crazy. I wonder what her character would be like in the game, she must have been a bit psycho in this version too.
I don't have much proof, but because there is so much art of Leon and Sayaka together in Distrust, I believe at some point there was an idea to make them both culprits of the same chapter, or something like that...
They were used as design templates for every other character in the game. Leon for boys, and Sayaka for girls. In fact, they were killed off first, because the devs got sick of looking at them.
I've always been curious about Distrust so I'm excited to watch this! Edit: Please do make a video on your take of the trials! We know Leon kills Kyoko in one and Sayaka kills Leon in another, so I'm curious on your take on who Chihiro and Hifumi kills
I remember back when i barely knew anything about Danganronpa, a summary i heard about the investigations was that you needed to find evidence within a time limit. I misunderstood this a little bit and thought that this meant that you wouldnt actually be able to collect all the evidence in the investigation and the trial could go down different paths depending on what arguments you decided to shoot down. Later i learned about the branching paths of Distrust and I still wish i could play Danganronpa with branching paths cause it seems so cool.
Not having all of the evidence would definitely be an interesting feature and make for a more difficult game. Instead of having all of the pieces of the puzzle laid out in front of you from the trial's start and only having to arrange them, you'd be faced with having to listen during the trial and decide whether or not to trust what the other characters are saying, and then truly make a decision on whodunnit instead of having it handed to you. I feel like that is one thing I would like to see changed about the Danganronpa games -- because of the rule that you have to vote for the true culprit or everyone dies, you have to get it correct every time, and so it can almost feel like spoon feeding at times. I think it'd be interesting to have a killing game where it doesn't matter if the person you voted for execution was the true culprit or not. It'd be really traumatizing for the cast to realize they just caused an innocent classmate to be executed. If I ever make a killing game of my own (I have plenty of ideas, but no execution lol), I think I'd incorporate this, since there's so many possibilities. But it could also create branching timelines, so that's more complexity to the story. I understand why Danganronpa didn't do that.
Honestly this would have been better than the current danganronpa. I love the ability to actually change your story. Plus really dark stories are a fav of mine.
I like the idea that you get to choose who does in distrust, I really liked Maizono even if her only character trait was liking Naegi, assuming in distrust there are routes she lived longer, she likely has a more fleshed out story we never got to see, and I also just wish she didn't die, even though it was a important character moment for Naegi. Side note, I feel it would have impacted Naegi more if Maizono killed Leon, because then he would have to see the one person he chose to connect with, executed after trying to frame him for murder, which, even though she would definitely apologize, it would still cement the idea that he couldn't trust anybody. I would also like to see a AU where Maizono is his investigation partner
While I enjoy Danganronpa’s sillier away with the signature psycho pop pink blood and Monokuma’s… entire personality… but DISTRUST having alternate paths is something I feel is desperately missing from Danganronpa (although Trigger Happy Havoc tries with Makoto’s choices in chapter 4 and chapter 5).
This is a question I've actually been working on for quite some time in an interactive written experiment/adventure. (Kinda like an online DnD campaign but as a thriller) Basically, I've been thinking about a way to make readers "play" Distrust using a hidden plan and achievements system to guide their choices, while publishing the results of their actions once every week. In short, I have thought up key locations/executions/murder plans/reason of the killing game and four paths to take Naegi's character to. (Survivor, Final Sacrifice, Accomplice, Brainwashed) All of this would be combined with free time events at the end of every chapter to let the readers decide who would they spend time with: aka who would trust Naegi. However some characters trusting him could lead to their demise (Chihiro...) so I've made "safe points" in the free time events where the character is sure to be alive, some require distrust towards Naegi some require their trust, unless everyone has hit these points. (If that happens Monokuma will start the killing again or the readers will need to decide who to indirectly kill by pushing them out of their safe points.) Although, I also over time replaced the OG cast with original characters just in case. (That way this experiment could be done either with copyrighted characters or originals.) At the end of each run I'd indicate, as the game master, the achievements players managed to reach. (becoming friends with certain people, taking Naegi's fate into completely different directions...) And let them know what key places/events they failed to reach. So it'd insentivize them to try again.
Would this be in a form where readers vote for the next chapter's outcome or a interactive novel where individual readers click on different links that represent choices (which could lead to readers being able to reread and end up with a different ending)? I love your idea and would be willing to support it!
13:05 I don't know how you included that image with a straight face lmao The Makoto killing Leon only to fail scenario is interesting speculation because it seems inspired by Sayaka's death in the final game, if you're trying to reverse engineer and see if there's an early version of that then that's pretty cool. Anyway, happy to see your speculation if you ever want to go deeper!
I'm currently thinking up a distrust version of Danganronpa 2 (because it's my fav of the trilogy and I love the beta designs) with a darker narrative and branching paths, as well as different personalies depending on the characters and longer chapters. A mixture of Danganronpa lapse, Yttd, Danganronpa F, ect... Just all the games if been binging for quite some time. I'd really love to have a fangame about it, or *make* it, but I both lack the skill and the confidence to make it real. Maybe someday. In the meantime, I'll continue to think up the story I'd want and use this video as reference as well. Thanks for the video, Weeby! Have a good one.
Distrust would’ve been a cool concept the flow chart reminds me of Detroit Become Human, I really like story driven games where you pick your path, I hope someday we get a similar concept like Distrust in the future
I get distrust was appealing to a smaller audience and while I'm happier with what we got with thh I still wish we could've seen distrust release even as a neat little gift for dr fans as a complete demo on steam idk I just wish we could try it 😭😭
6:14 I disagree with the sentiment that “Distrust”'s Trust / Distrust mechanic is basically Ambidex Game from “Virtue's Last Reward”. From my understanding, the Trust / Distrust system would have each character have a meter that measured how much they trusted or distrust you. The rating on this meter would affect the plot. Meanwhile, the Ambidex is just a binary choice that forces down one route or another. Whether or not a character trust you is irreverent to the flow of the story. I could see the Trust / Distrust system inspiring the Ambidex Game, but from what I can tell they are very different mechanically.
I'd like to see a Danganronpa 1 Remake/Reboot, making some characters have more time to shine, change some killing order, REMOVE THE DOUBLE KILL. We could even see the motive of the students' family members who are being held hostages in Towa city being used.
From what I'm seeing, I think Chihiro was probably going to be the type of character that's pretending to be cute and innocent and is just awful/crazy. It's just the vibes I get from that glowy, cute cg of them saying "I didn't do it".
Honestly I was obsessed with the idea of picking who you would make it to the end. I'm learning to program and might eventually make "demakes" which are the same plots but in the style of older point and click adventure games and what evidence you discover/what events you trigger, decide who makes it to the end. Even Makoto, as player, isn't safe.
the general concept for distrust was actually reused by spike chunsoft to make the zero escape trilogy! its way darker and has branching paths and multiple endings where different characters die and its super worth checking out
I am thinking that those "bad endings" could be more than just Naegi dying. They may be situations where Naegi becomes the blackened and succeeds at fooling everyone, or it could be a situation where a perfect crime is committed with the right combination of people ending terribly for Naegi. My consideration for these is that the DISTRUST meter seems to carry a lot more weight into the prototype and the idea may be that if the player does not take care of this DISTRUST meter, they may end up with people refusing to cooperate or even maliciously tampering with the crime scene (the second trial of the original game leads me to believe this could be a glimpse of that idea).
Distrust's grimy and broken setting reminds me of the manga Doubt by Yoshiki Tonogai. It also has a group of people locked up in a rundown building, forced into a killing game. And the names are basically synonyms of each other lol
OK, I know nobody will see this, but I still wanna share my thought process. There a idea I had while watching this for bad end route, where you Investigate with Yasuhiro. Watching this video, the idea of DeathTraps or puzzles planted by the mastermind throughout the school came to mind. Much like in games like zero escape or yttd, you'd need to complete these in order to progress, get any lore, uncover secret items and stuff like that. I kinda imagine Makoto and Yasuhiro walking up to a puzzle with three separately colored buttons, with a poem, or riddle of some sort hinting at which one is correct. Yasuhiro, in his infinite wisdom, would use his 30% accuracy fortune telling, and foresee the correct button. He would then force Makoto to press it, getting the wrong answer and they both would die. Not the most creative thing ever, but I still like the idea of it.
I think in the final game it would’ve been more realistic if you could’ve decided if 1-4 people died or lived. It would be easier for the developers compared to doing the same with the whole cast, and it’s not like all survivors at the end of the games are all plot critical anyway.
I would genuinely love to hear how you think each chapter and execution went down, though I think it would help if you made a makeshift birds eye view of the warehouse to help with how things would play out UwU
I do think it's really interesting that they show the top three most voted for at the end of the trial, because in the Danganronpa games, the vote is unanimous basically every time. It makes me wonder -- are the trials time-limited or is there another mechanic keeping the students from unanimously discovering the culprit? It seems that there's still the rule that the students must pick the correct culprit or they all die, so including the ranked voting system to me implies that they are less certain of the final verdict in comparison to the Danganronpa games, where they're given all the time necessary to discover the true culprit and how exactly they did committed the murder. I agree with a lot of other commenters -- I would loveee for this to be an actual game, or for someone to create it as a fangame. I never thought about the trust/distrust mechanic in this sense when I played VLR, but I really liked the decision-making and branching endings in that game, so I'd love to see someone recreate it with Danganronpa, whether it's the THH cast or a new original cast. (Hell, I'd do it myself if I had the skills.)
I honestly really want them to do a game like this, they've talked about revisiting Danganronpa again and I think it would be really cool, albeit very difficult, to have a game that plays like Distrust.
This is very interesting but the one thing that really caught my attention in distrust is where they are; a abandoned building. Instead of the nice school of danganronpa it's a anxiety inducing place that isn't suitable for people to live in, so wanted to get out is 10x more warranted Plus the different endings in a game like this is neat 👍
I'd love to see a sequel video about this. I just wish there was more information or screenshots of Distrust. Also, am I misremembering or was there a comic strip from Distrust that showed Junko stabbed to death?
Iirc it was a THH early demo thing! It was that one climax puzzle and it featured the current design. Sayaka was a witness to something weird, a vase broke, the culprit stabbed Junko. Maybe it's what you're talking about?
I really feel like some of Distrust’s elements would’ve made Danganronpa stronger. The concept of having multiple routes and being able to influence other characters feels like such a more natural direction for a murder mystery visual novel series. I also would much rather have a larger surviving cast by the end of the game than what we have currently. The final chapters are quite long in each game, and only having a few characters to listen to speak does get very tiring in these long chapters, especially in V3 where all the survivors have really low, mellow voices. Having alternate routes would also add more repeatable elements to the game, and while you’d still end up reaching the point of seeing all outcomes, I think it’d feel more refreshing to replay with different outcomes, and it would also mean every character would get more adequate screen time, whereas the earlier chapter victims/killers are much easier to forget about by the time you’re nearing the end. Overall there are definitely some aspects of the danganronpa we have that are stronger evolutions of the concept, like the style, but I’d say it’s pretty even in which changes were good and which ones weren’t.
Amazing video! I always find it interesting to theorize about Distrust and I think your theories are very interesting as well. Now when are the Milgram videos coming?
Seeing your speculations on Distrust sure is interesting. Makes me wonder what else you could tackle like this. Like how would the story go continuing from the demo trial (where Yasuhiro was killed by Hifumi), or how would all the characters develop if they were the protagonist. Yeah, seeing Chihiro be a murderer would be quite the heart breaker. I’m guessing it would be similar feeling to Mikan & Gonta’s cases. Chihiro would use they’re moe/shota appeal to charm they’re way out of accusations and one of the ways to prove they’re guilt would be revealing and proving they’re secret.
19:44 i think that part is just monokuma explaining the rules of the trials, since it looks much more similar to those strips of the npc girls that he shows before each first trial. it could be possible just from the one screenshot of him begging the rest of the cast though, since it seems like he's using his charm to get out of something
If only there was an indie game that took some of the basic concepts introduced in DISTRUST and turned them into an actual thing, something that kept the death game by majority aspect and maybe actually surpassed the thing it took inspiration from. Maybe it could also have a distinct artstyle and maybe even you could make it in a simple engine like RPG maker. If only.
With the different story routes there'd be plenty of opportunity for every character in the game to be a victim or culprit, as well as numerous possible Bad Ends I think there'd be potential for every character to have their own Route and ending, every character surviving within their own route of course, you'd probably learn the most about any character in their route, including their motives for murdering in other Routes
Early! Also a possible theory maybe if you hang out with Celeste there could be like a set of decisions (and maybe with other characters to) which can affect there trust or distrust meter so possibly with Celeste if you pick enough wrong decisions she could eventually end up losing her temper and killing you she’s the only character I can think of other than the ones you mentioned that would kill you but there could also be other endings depending on what you say during that set of desicions!
I think one thing that makes the theory of a only 3 chapter game is the fact that in the 1st game we had only 3 tradicional murderers. Leon, Mondo and Celeste. It's different from the others 2 games where we have a victim and and executed person in each chapter. Well he had Sakura killing herself and Junko Killing Mukuro but they are a little bit different. Also if you take sayaka Leon chihiro mondo ishimaru Yamada and Celeste out of the group it makes 8 survivors who could've been the original 8 survivors in distrust.
I feel like the ends that seem to cut short on the last block could be that Makoto may have been the culprit himself or wrongfully voted, depending on the people who are on his side and with his new motive could lead to a trial in which you the player have to lie about who the killer and clues might be
I would cry if Chihiro was a culprit. He must’ve seen someone almost murder someone and he tries to man up so he can become stronger and the almost killer tries killing them but he murders them both just to be safe. It’s something I doubt but it’s possible. This game was highly different.
Bonus points if he has the same relationship he does with Mondo in THH: they're trying to help him get stronger. Mondo gets attacked, Chihiro kills to defend him. Chihiro starts panicking and cannot think, Mondo gets emotional and scared and tells him to kill him (maybe he was injured badly and was not going to live or would suffer? Maybe he had a chance to live but didn't want Chihiro to be executed and he knew Chihiro wouldn't let him be executed with everyone). Chihiro ends up having to do it. Badabim badaboum, he gets found out and executed. Another similar scenario would be if he saw someone murder someone else and managed to sneak around them and kill them. However Monokuma decided to be an asshole and to make you find out who killed who. Maybe part of the mystery is that Chihiro himself does not know who he killed because it was dark and both victims had similar injuries/cause of death? This twist would come in right before everyone votes, stating that it doesn't matter who Chihiro killed because both were dead. Monokuma cuts in and declares that they either find out who Chihiro killed or they, and Chihiro since they will have to vote for both, will be executed. Extra bonus points if there are 2 separate executions (in their own cutscenes to be extra messed up) for Chihiro and the corpse. Nothing better than ruining a corpse to scare people! (And maybe Monokuma can make a comment that now they know what will happen if anyone tries to do this kind of thing because it's a headache to deal with... The students in Distrust are a lot more brutal so I'm sure one of them would have something really messed up planned or something really complicated in mind to throw people off their track or even to try and best the mastermind. Gotta scare them into submission!)
While I love the danganronpa designs, Distrust Kyoko is just so cool and I'm upset we got the sprite we did instead. I guess you could say she was, slaying (YAS GIRLBOSS).
Honestly, considering the fact that this game is all about teenagers being forced into a killing game, BY DEFINITION it should've been way darker than what we got. Don't get me wrong, I really like Danganronpa. But with this kind of plot, its so weird that it wasn't way more angsty and dark. This kids should be absolutely traumatized. The only two characters that acted like actual humans would were Taka and Fuyuhiko. Every other character was moving on so fast from the death of their classmates, it definitely took of the realism. Also, I can totally understand why they didn't went with "players choice decides on who survives" thing, it would be extremely difficult to write and program something like that. But man, it would be so cool.
i really like the idea that in some bad endings its because makoto tried to kill someone and failed it would be cool if a bad end route was makoto killed someone and got caught at the trial
Would the boxes in the time chedual not mean like times during the day. or like moments that put the timer further. discovering clues. OR maybe all the rooms and who would be inside of them doing what?
If you look into danganronpa 1 on the switch. When you boot up the game, it shows the spike chunsoft logo. And you can see that picture of beta chihiro on the ground with monokuma above him/her.
ok theory so if the culprits actually shouldve been culprits i feel like that sayaka killed leon(you already said that but i am just making it clear) hifumi killed yasuhiro because that was a actual think that was suposed to happend leon killed kiyoko(again just making it clear) junko killed either leon or sayaka and chiriho killed either leon sayaka or mondo(mondo because maybe he thought he would get stronger if he would kill mondo or maybe he bullied him becasue in chihiros sprite we can tell that he is a boy so yeah)
A year late but I don’t think Distrust would be able to sell in the states (Don’t know if it’s the same for Japan) very well if it was given an adult rating compared to just the mature rating. When a game gets an adult rating, game stores/sites end up just either not selling or advertising the game at all or if they do sell it, the adult games are often hidden. It’d obviously sell more now but danganronpa is only so big (in the states) due to the direction the game creators took, such as changing the blood from red to pink just to escape a higher rating
If there was a world where Distrust could still be released, I'd sell my kidney to have that happen
I'd sell your kidney to make it happen too
Same
probably will never happen
As long it's YOUR kidney, then sign me up.
I would also sell his kidney for this game.
@@nito575 Itd probably be more confusion than horror
I personally LOVE the darker themes and more mature designs of Distrust

When you say “more mature”, what do you mean?
Play the Zero Escape series then
I really dig with Distrust's more mature and darkr/worn down/grimy artstyle and overall presentation. The overall victims and executions look a lot more brutal than the final game, especially Kyoko being beheaded by Junko, and Leon stabbing he torso. As a Kyoko fan, I would feel nothing but pain playing these paths lol
The choices and the variety of outcomes alone makes Distrust fascinating to me.
I feel pain as well. I love Kyoko sooo much ToT

Beheading is not that brutal and danganronpa had done beheadings in Dr3 already
@@Juanpablofanasito850 It did, but I'm mostly talking about the games.
Haven't finished the video yet but beheading was supposed to be Junko's execution.. Being terrified of her fate but even more of the audience watching it, being excited for it. Beheading have always been a spectacle after all.. A fitting end for a model in my opinion
I like the idea of being able to change their fates.

16:23 That also reminds me of a basic version of V3s Scrum Debate
Considering how bad the Danganronpa writers are when there's just 1 coherent storyline I think this could've been a major failure if they kept it this way
what guy above me said
No matter what, I always hope we one day get a future Danganronpa game with multiple endings, and I mean REAL multiple endings ,not fake out ones, I mean genuine multiple endings like a Silent Hill game with my personal preferences for such ones being:
Next Ultimate Hope (True Good End)
Sacrifice (Sad Good End)
Survivor (Neutral End)
Just Another Victim (Murdered End)
Psycho (Caught - Blackened End)
Monster (Victor - Blackened End)
Slave (Brainwashed End)
Loyalist (Despair Servant End)
Martyr (Lost - Mastermind End)
Next Ultimate Despair (Won - Mastermind End)
Uh oh! Found a bug, found a bug, found a bug, found a bug! I found a bug! (Joke Ending)
I'd probably be the one to get the joke ending first while trying to get the true good end
So, uh… The new Kodaka game The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is confirmed to have multiple endings. Does that count?
@@stardustpie1992it’s not a danganronpa game and also I don’t think it’s a death game.
Not sure if you’ll read this comment but I had a strong burst of interest in Distrust about a year ago… I speak Japanese so I did some digging myself back then. If it’s interesting, here’s some of the info I found that I don’t see as talked about:
- What we know as ‘Distrust’ and the images circulated for it, they’re actually three different stages of development for the game.
The murderer is chosen by force and MUST murder.*
- Monokuma is a weird human thing here instead
- The students aren’t ‘Ultimates’ but normal kids
Second draft of Distrust:
- This is where the more colorful designs came into play. I can’t find a picture for the character designs for this one in the video (LMK if there is one readers and I’ll edit this comment), but it has concept Maizono Sayaka with the glasses and brown hair. The character designs here are a LOT more ‘exaggerated’ IMO and growing towards the style Dangan Ronpa would finally take (the first draft designs were much more realistic with no fantasy hair colors, etc.)
- *What is probably of most interest is a mechanic carried over from the first game- when the trial happens, it doesn’t matter if you got the culprit right or wrong. Whoever has the most votes, guilty or innocent, will be executed. This draft shows off the picture of Junko being executed by guillotine- but there’s a good chance rather than this being a personalized execution, the guillotine would have been used for ALL executions to symbolize them being carried out in a sort of ‘mob justice’.*
- Bear Monokuma was probably introduced in this second draft, based on the evidence I put together.
Third draft- not actually called Distrust anymore, but “The Execution Academy and the Students of Despair”:
- The students are no longer normies, but Ultimates
- Murder is no longer forced, students kill to escape of their own volition
- This is where the Kazuo execution footage came from
- This is where I think Dangan Ronpa had really started to show its unique appeal, it was boasted as a ‘new genre’ and toted the 2.5D graphics as a charm point
If you ever have any questions about it in the future or my sources, I’m happy to help!
Because of the split personality, either one of their skills would be limited to when they’re the one that’s active)
Kyoko: with her detective skills, I feel like having Kyoko as a friend could lead to intricate details you the player couldn’t find, perhaps making the trials a bit easier.
You are really creative 👍
@@typicalfangirl2001 While I lover your idea, the distrust debuffs are a bit too harsh. I imagine if you try to get someone's trust to go up, you have to potentially get others to distrust you. This could lead to your investments be for naught if a character that lowers others trust gets too low or only having 1 person trusting you the entire game.
Man I love your ideas of how the trust and distrust system could work with each character! Makes me wish Distrust was real as these are too cool concepts to pass off.
OH MU GOD THIS IS GENIUS!!
Love how Sayaka smiling while killing Leon
"yei i just kill him. great job :D!!"
That was the image in this video that genuinely scared me the most
The idea of having the top 3 most voted for culprit being visible is a very interesting one, that I would love to see in a game like this, though I guess that's just a more mechanical way of representing existing tensions that do carry over from chapter to chapter, even if this system did not make it into the final game, the tensions were there.
I think thatsy just because they were the first characters to be designed 😅
I've always been curious about Distrust so I'm excited to watch this!
Edit: Please do make a video on your take of the trials! We know Leon kills Kyoko in one and Sayaka kills Leon in another, so I'm curious on your take on who Chihiro and Hifumi kills
Id also like to know the scenario
There are way more darker stories than distrust

Weedy is basically saying that Leon was going to be the Mitch of distrust
I always thought of Mitch as the Wal-Mart, Dollar tree, dusty, cheap version of Leon. No one can replace my baby
LMAO WEEDY
(Kinda like an online DnD campaign but as a thriller)
Basically, I've been thinking about a way to make readers "play" Distrust using a hidden plan and achievements system to guide their choices, while publishing the results of their actions once every week.
In short, I have thought up key locations/executions/murder plans/reason of the killing game and four paths to take Naegi's character to. (Survivor, Final Sacrifice, Accomplice, Brainwashed)
All of this would be combined with free time events at the end of every chapter to let the readers decide who would they spend time with: aka who would trust Naegi.
However some characters trusting him could lead to their demise (Chihiro...) so I've made "safe points" in the free time events where the character is sure to be alive, some require distrust towards Naegi some require their trust, unless everyone has hit these points. (If that happens Monokuma will start the killing again or the readers will need to decide who to indirectly kill by pushing them out of their safe points.)
Although, I also over time replaced the OG cast with original characters just in case. (That way this experiment could be done either with copyrighted characters or originals.)
At the end of each run I'd indicate, as the game master, the achievements players managed to reach. (becoming friends with certain people, taking Naegi's fate into completely different directions...) And let them know what key places/events they failed to reach.
So it'd insentivize them to try again.
This sounds interesting!!
Cool
That sounds cool AF bruh
Sounds amazing I’d love to play it
Would this be in a form where readers vote for the next chapter's outcome or a interactive novel where individual readers click on different links that represent choices (which could lead to readers being able to reread and end up with a different ending)? I love your idea and would be willing to support it!
13:05 I don't know how you included that image with a straight face lmao
The Makoto killing Leon only to fail scenario is interesting speculation because it seems inspired by Sayaka's death in the final game, if you're trying to reverse engineer and see if there's an early version of that then that's pretty cool. Anyway, happy to see your speculation if you ever want to go deeper!
I really like the darker and more mature themes that Distrust had.
I know I'm really late but that sounds really cool
Distrust would’ve been a cool concept the flow chart reminds me of Detroit Become Human, I really like story driven games where you pick your path, I hope someday we get a similar concept like Distrust in the future
Man, I love DBH and now I kinda want to find Danganronpa fanfics like that 😊
I get distrust was appealing to a smaller audience and while I'm happier with what we got with thh I still wish we could've seen distrust release even as a neat little gift for dr fans as a complete demo on steam idk I just wish we could try it 😭😭

I disagree with the sentiment that “Distrust”'s Trust / Distrust mechanic is basically Ambidex Game from “Virtue's Last Reward”.
I hope somebody makes an actual distrust fan game.
Same omg
Praying 🙏
Me too!

Me too, like I would totally play or watch a play through of it. It’s too good of an idea to pass.
I'd like to see a Danganronpa 1 Remake/Reboot, making some characters have more time to shine, change some killing order, REMOVE THE DOUBLE KILL.
We could even see the motive of the students' family members who are being held hostages in Towa city being used.
But i like the theme of a double kill on chapter 3 on every game its silly
@Gay_tw1nk It gets ridiculously repeated just for the sake of repeating the same old thing.
no cuz i rlly hope we get distrust as a seperate game, it seemed like a rlly good idea 😭
I agree with that! And well using all thoes beta Sprits and changing their talents to something news and bam! We get a new cast
100% agree with this
From what I'm seeing, I think Chihiro was probably going to be the type of character that's pretending to be cute and innocent and is just awful/crazy.
Even Makoto, as player, isn't safe.
the general concept for distrust was actually reused by spike chunsoft to make the zero escape trilogy! its way darker and has branching paths and multiple endings where different characters die and its super worth checking out
Danganronpa Distrust > Normal Danganronpa, seriously I love the old designs, deaths, and the whole concept in general
I'd love to see more! I've always been interested in seeing what Distrust could've been. Loved the darker themes and atmosphere it would've had.
And the names are basically synonyms of each other lol
i LOVE! the trust - distrust system of this game! It would make the games actually replayable
I wish it was real, especially the branching paths it's almost impossible to do it right due to the amount of work required but it'd be awesome.
Damn, I just really want to know more about what they had planned for this original version!!! I’m so interested ugh 😭
This is very interesting but the one thing that really caught my attention in distrust is where they are; a abandoned building. Instead of the nice school of danganronpa it's a anxiety inducing place that isn't suitable for people to live in, so wanted to get out is 10x more warranted
Plus the different endings in a game like this is neat 👍
I'd definitely be down for another vid talking about Distrust. The concept has always intrigued me ever since you brought it up all those years ago!
imagine a couple of hour long videos about danganronpa "all endings"
I'd love to see a sequel video about this. I just wish there was more information or screenshots of Distrust.
Also, am I misremembering or was there a comic strip from Distrust that showed Junko stabbed to death?
Iirc it was a THH early demo thing! It was that one climax puzzle and it featured the current design. Sayaka was a witness to something weird, a vase broke, the culprit stabbed Junko. Maybe it's what you're talking about?
@@ondiiina Oooh you're probably right! Thanks for reminding me
I feel like toko beta designs should have been in the game I mean it fits her so well!
I genuinely think distrust is such a cool concept and wish we got it as an actual game tbh :,)
This would've made a very great 10 year anniversary game
This game sounds so cool, and you did a really good job describing it.
I would love it if you mayd a in-depth vid on some of your ideas.
19:44 i think that part is just monokuma explaining the rules of the trials, since it looks much more similar to those strips of the npc girls that he shows before each first trial. it could be possible just from the one screenshot of him begging the rest of the cast though, since it seems like he's using his charm to get out of something
A part 2 would be awesome!
HOLD UP. That “Beta Chihiro Execution” was used for the Spike/Spike Chunsoft logo screen in the final game!
If only.
If this is about YTTD then this is a great reminder I still need to finish Sou's route in Chapter 3
@@robertomorales1305 it is!
8:37 Let me guess, Toko start looking at Makoto as a cute boy and.... The rest is history 😂
With the different story routes there'd be plenty of opportunity for every character in the game to be a victim or culprit, as well as numerous possible Bad Ends
I think there'd be potential for every character to have their own Route and ending, every character surviving within their own route of course, you'd probably learn the most about any character in their route, including their motives for murdering in other Routes
I would love to see scenarios for these alleged culprits!
I think the idea of having multiple routes in Danganronpa would be so cool. It would be hard to do, but awesome
get up everyone, new weebynewz video
In Danganronpa, I kinda wish we had the choice to murder others. It would make the game a lot more fun.
It would have alternate endings too
it would’ve be so cool if we had distrust 🙏
Nobody gonna talk about mondo’s hair used to be a gun ✋💀 9:11
I wish they release this version, or maybe create a new one i miss danganronpa
5:00 That Hifumi is terrifying.
While I love the danganronpa designs, Distrust Kyoko is just so cool and I'm upset we got the sprite we did instead. I guess you could say she was, slaying (YAS GIRLBOSS).
Every single day I wished we got Distrust over Danganronpa
Excellent video! I would very much to see a part 2
Virtues Last Reward from the Zero Escape series would eventually use the Distrust System itself.
Literally off topic but i love your channel so much and your so kind please keep it up it makes my day :>
distrust sayaka is an absolute menace and im here for it
Honestly, considering the fact that this game is all about teenagers being forced into a killing game, BY DEFINITION it should've been way darker than what we got.
This is so good, you should do more videos on distrust!
I think picture in 19:37 is trial explanation picture becaucr artstyle and person is similar
There is Actually a fangan called Danganronpa Distrust where it’s basically Season 52 and Rantaros Backstory. I BEG YOU TO CHECK IT OUT!!!!
I love how your turn to die sounds closer to the original DR than DR itself
i really like the idea that in some bad endings its because makoto tried to kill someone and failed it would be cool if a bad end route was makoto killed someone and got caught at the trial
I wish Kodaka could make (Danganronpa) Distrust some day in the future.😭
Would the boxes in the time chedual not mean like times during the day. or like moments that put the timer further. discovering clues.
OR
maybe all the rooms and who would be inside of them doing what?
the beta characters look so good i wish they looked like that😭
That’s what I call a quality video + 1 sub can’t wait for part 2
THAT WOULD BE SO GOOD?! ITS A BUTTERFLY EFFECT GAME
The only reason why I want to play distrust is that your relationships actually matter instead of being more like filler for days in between trials
Weeby I love your Danganronpa Sprite!
Well… at least Monokuma is our lovable, hilarious bear who can kill our favorite characters and look cute at the same time!
I love this so much and im only one minute in, ah! I do hope you make more videos like this Weeby, this was a really cool idea!
Is it just me or does R2 seem like everyone escapes and that’s why there is a beginning with no trial or corpse
11:24 I can't believe you turned Leon into Mitch Weeby, that's so disrespectful.
oh god that decapetated head with that cold look is just from hell
