Netflix's Weird Aspect Ratio

  • The online streaming service, Netflix has produced some really top tier exclusive TV shows for their platform such as The Crown, Stranger Things and Dark. But something that really bothers me about them is their aspect ratio.
Thanks to my mate, Nadav Cohen, for polishing the audio: / @amessvv

Altered Carbon (2018), A Rainy Day in New York (2019), Band of Brothers (2001), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Breaking Bad (2008), Cafe Society (2016), Chernobyl (2019), Dark (2017), Doctor Who (2005), Game of Thrones (2011), House of Cards (2013), If Beale Street Could Talk (2018), Jurassic World (2015), Mad Men (2007), Magnificent Obsession (1954), Midsommar (2019), Sacred Games (2018), Sex Education (2019), Spotlight (2015), Stranger Things (2016), The Crown (2016), The Witcher (2019), Wonder Wheel (2017), You (2018).

All my thoughts in one big comment:
2:1 ratio is generally used as a compromise between Cinemascope and 1.77:1 or 1.85:1. Hence that producer Stephen Spielberg and director Collin Trevorrow met there for Jurassic World. But, 16:9 *IS* a compromise ratio, chosen so 4:3 and Cinemascope both take up 75% of the screen when letterboxed.
Speaking of the cameras shooting in 1.90:1, I can attest to this when I bought a BMPCC 4K which does the same. Bear in mind that a lens makes a circle shaped image to project onto the sensor. I heard the 16:9 sensor crop on the B4K is actually smaller than a 16:9 sensor crop on a 4:3 sensor. Though the B4K sensor is slightly wider than a 4:3 sensor. That's a sign it's optimized for 1.85:1 and Cinemascope.
When I was watching various train videos on RUclips, I thought "trains are so horizontal, I can "pinch to zoom" on my 2:1 smartphone screen and still see the entire train most of the time. So if I were to film trains with my BMPCC, I will try 2:1 ratio.
Finally, Star Trek: Discovery is also made in 2:1.

2:1 is the perfect screen ratio for today's smartphones. Although most modern phones are 21:9 (simalar to 2.35:1), if you take the small I-Phone camera bezels in to account, you are able to fill a full phone screen, without some parts of the picture being covered by the bezel, with the 2:1 ratio.

I thought it was simply because most phones have changed to 2:1 (or there abouts) and since there's probably a massive amount of people just viewing Netflix on their phones now, they go with what looks best on the popular medium of today: a phone

I really like tall aspect ratios, I would rather the image be cropped horizontally rather than vertically. I like 4:3, 16:9, 2:1, and the IMAX ratio 1.43:1 (or 1.90:1), I think they are just more immersive, and seeing a sliver of an image that is really wide just bugs me if that makes any sense.

Don’t forget about 5:3 (used in some European films back then, also used in The VVitch), 16:10 (Disney CAPS animation most notably used in films like Aladdin, Mulan, and Treasure Planet, also a widescreen PC aspect ratio), 1.75:1 (used in Disney films from The Jungle Book to The Fox and the Hound) and 1.85:1, as well as 3:2 (negative aspect ratio or VistaVision, for films like Vertigo and The Ten Commandments, also used in Gretel and Hansel), 5:4 (uncommon PC aspect ratio from ye olden days), 1.2:1 (used for some early films and some scenes in (500) Days of Summer) and 1.37:1 (Academy ratio).
Pretty much 2:1 and anything below it.
This is also why I don’t go with ultrawide monitors for my PC, not only are there some issues with some games, and movies will appear even smaller, you also lose some vertical resolution compared to 4K.
And it also felt more immersive to me watching the Snyder Cut in 4:3 than 16:9 (open matte), Sonic CD’s anime cutscenes in 4:3 than 2.2:1 (open matte) Top Gun in 4:3 than 2.39:1 (open matte), and Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) in 4:3 than 2:1 (cropped for it’s Japanese release, yes, this Japanese film was recut for an American release and the American cut was re-released in Japan, albeit cropped).
I prefer having more image and I think it is more immersive, I would happily trade away some of the horizontal screen space.
Hell, the 4:3 version I have of Top Gun is caveman-era DVD-quality SD while my 2.39:1 copy is 4K HDR and I would still prefer the 4:3 version.
Open matte is great and it feels like IMAX at home.

I happen to love 2:1 and the first time I really noticed it was (strange as it sounds) in Austin Powers (the first film - the other two were 2.39:1). It doesn't look so cinematic that it's distracting and yet it certain sets the stage. I also use a projector to watch movies and most premium television shows these days, so I notice it even less. At the end of the day, the real reason why it might be bugging you is because it's not something you're used to. But Netflix is at bridging the gap between television and cinema so much that they go as far as to avoid making clear distinctions in their line ups as to what is a film and what is a series. This is a great first step in creating uniformity, and I suspect over time, this ratio will become the norm.

2.20 is the oddest ratio for me. It’s an odd comprise between 1.85 and 2.39. A lot of old classic films like Lawerence of Arabia are shot in that ratio. Or more recently, Tenet.

It’s a pretty decent film overall but it’s nowhere near the other classic Toho kaiju films like Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra.

2:1 is my preferred ratio. No other can balance height and width so well, as the 2:1 can keep, at the same time, a good height (close to that of the 1.85 ratio), with a good width, (close to that of the 2.39 ratio) .
I don't think any other ratio can capture both the characters and environments of a movie in a similar way.
In short, 2:1 is a balanced and versatile ratio, I love it and I always say that if I were a professional filmmaker, I would use it a lot in my movies!!😊

I appreciate that you say that you are probably making a bigger deal out of it than it needs to be. If it is actually good quality content, the aspect ratio will vanish and the audience will get sucked into the story. I think a problem is that modern audiences are spoiled for choice, and if a show doesn't hook someone, it is easy enough to click away and watch something else. But to be fair, it might actually just be something that they want as a company to promote the level of quality in their programming. I think Stranger Things looks great and any new things they produce will continue to use that visual standard they've set.

2:1 has largely gone out of favor outside of Netflix in recent years and the reason is simple: it does not look good on a big movie theatre screen. Few theatres have 2:1 lenses and as a result, you will see either black bars on a 1.85 screen or empty space on a 2.39 screen. A film like Green Book or Midsommar looks shrunk when seeing them in a theatre. Also, a lot of the recent films that used 2:1 felt more like cashing in a trend instead of adding to the final product. 1.85 would have worked better in the long run.

I dislike 2:1, as it necessitates black bars.
I like how there are different aspect ratios in videos, & it would be a loss for videos to not have the diversity that we have today.
However, I think that it'd be ideal to have a compromise that'd allow consumers to have almost all future content fill the screen, whilst giving creators options to frame how they'd like to (or close enough).
Dun da du dun dun dun, a tri-standardisation of aspect ratios!
You'd have 4:3, which offers beautiful, intimate shots.
You'd have 2.35:1, which allows for epic, expansive framing.
& then, of course, you'd have 16:9, an almost-perfect compromise of the 2.
That way, a consumer could also have a 4:3 TV & a 21:9/2:35:1 TV (or monitor), knowing both will have enough content to make it worthwhile to purchase them (provided there are required logistics & enough that the person cares enough.
3 TVs, with lesser usage leading to more longevity, softening the costs of each aspect ratio.
Each of the 3 aspect ratios'd be distinguishable & have a strong identity.
Having just 3 main formats'd make it easier for manufacturers to accommodate them, as, a DVD player, for example, could support the 3.
People disliked the look of 1.20:1(ish) when non-silent movies were in their early days, & I don't think many people want to see content much wider than 2.35:1, so I think the 3 aspect ratios'd be well received from casuals.

With how cinematic Netflix originals are I think they should use 2.76:1. The wider ratio makes the content more immersive. In fact I would choose 4:1 for documentaries. Anything less than 2.76:1 should only be used for comedies.

On projector the format look amazing but not is just average for the TV. Not a deal breaker and better than 2.39:1 for the home.

All of film is terrible now. It is just far too digitized. They are casting people with smaller pores verses acting abilities. The staging of the sets abs detail has gone way overboard as well. Often I find myself ignoring the actors and concentrating on the sets/props. The music abs voice overs are overused as well as a medium in most series. Always on blast often incongruent with the period it is set in or cheesily so. Netflix is rathe frustrating in many more ways than the letterboxing crap. As promo images float and glide across the screen like mugshots. Watch and like one style of film and then get bombarded by that genre as nauseum. The forced woke series are laughable and often missing the point of equality by literally being beyond faux.

I really don't understand the hate letterboxing get. A movie should be in widescreen, not look like a commercial or a music video. Letterboxes make the movies feel like real movies.

Exactly. Different aspect ratios = different artistic styles and convey different moods/feelings. If everything was 16:9, it would be hella boring. I personally love anamorphic (2:35:1) and 2:75:1. Sexy as hell aspect ratios, those ones.
