2:1 Is such a clean ratio. Hollywood just copies what they’ve seen before that works. If directors were coming up with all their own compositions and choosing ratios based on what looks the best there would have been a lot more 2:1 ratios.
Because of you I now watch whether the anamorphic ratio is deserved in a movie... I just rewatched David Fincher's The Game and oh boy does he know how to use it ! Every frame justifies its ratio, one hundred percent. He even manages to show the actor's hands pretty often, while still keeping enough focus on their expressions and letting the surrounding speak as well, all at once. Thanks for the education !
My favorite aspect ratios are 2.00:1, for its balance between characters and environment, as well as horizontal and vertical scale in general; and the other would be the perhaps never used 2.10:1, for the simple fact that it is in the exact middle ground between the traditional 1.85:1 and 2.35:1 Regardless, I like anything from 1.85 to 2.39. I just don't like very narrow ratios, like the terrible 1.33, which screams "environment why"? And I also don't like the exaggeratedly wide ones, like the 2.76. The first is a tight box with almost no panorama and the second, as it is excessively wide, visibly loses in height. Summary: The best range of aspect ratios for me is 1.85:1 to 2.39:1 (and especially 2.00:1 and the "platonic" 2.10:1).
This video is gold. History + Subject. Thanks. I was searching to understand aspect ratios past 2 weeks but this video was not listed when searched. But finally after 2 weeks got as recommended.
This was super useful and informative - thanks. Just what I was looking for. It was also fabulously entertaining and visually rich. It all went by a little too fast for me though, and I'm too lazy to rewind. Pity.

I think it’s the native ratio of human eyesight too*

2:1 Is a good clean ratio. 😊
This is probably the video about aspect ratio that is easiest to digest and without some too technical information too. Thanks a lot!
Great to hear, that’s exactly my intention!
this is the perfect balance between humor, history and knowledge condensed ever!

I'm here for all the nerdy smirking... good job!
I love your channel I hope it continues to grow and dominate over other film channels.

best video I've seen on this, great editing too.
Another masterpiece. Thank god the algorithm brought me here.
Awesome video, thanks for the historical context as well!
5:53 I FINALLY figured out your nationality
I love you. I am Aspect Ratio Differentiator Man.
I hate to have to recommend anything from DIN but I maintain that movies, playing cards, movies, and monitors should all have a ratio of (2^(1/2))/1.
amazing video
Best cinema critic
My camera shoots in 17.9 i dont know why. Was or is this ratio used anywhere?
you forgot 3.6:1 aspect ratio in movies, commercials and music videos
What movie is at 4:01-4:02 (the 2.00:1 example...the picnic scene)?
Written on the Wind (Douglas Sirk, 1956)
Thanks. Unfortunately, it looks like nearly all the blu-ray releases, including Criterion, only have it available in 1.85:1 (open-matte I presume).
7:10 what movie was that? 😂
P s : how come this ingenious video has only 5200 views???
The number 1.90 makes me angry. Not quite as angry as "89 degrees is close enough," but almost.
You must be a fan of the precise 2 to 1 then
"A wide screen just makes a bad film twice as bad." - Samuel Goldwyn
Bro what is the movie at 6:31. Looks like a crime film from the 70s
You’re correct, that’s Costa-Gavra’s State of Siege
It was fun to watch! Lol
