As an aside to Ziggy: I've played MTG for about as long as I've played POE and both have captured my attention in similar ways. The design of both games are both focused on efficiently giving players exactly what they want while still maintaining diversity of content.

I realize you posted this a long time ago, but I wanted to share my appreciation for the series. Friends have been talking me into Path of Exile and your play through which is exactly the type of character I enjoy playing for the first time in an action RPG has been extremely educational. Thank you and all the best!
Characters on the temporary HC leagues get demoted to Standard not the Softcore league on death, and if your character is still alive by the end of the league he goes to permanent Hardcore.
Also the Class you pick matters because later on you can complete the Lord's Labyrinth and ascend to one of 3 sub-classes for each class which have a small separate passive skill tree with extremely powerful nodes.

Well i dont play that much anymore, just come back to it every new league to play like 3-4 hours a day for a few weeks, but yeah i played it since closed beta which is like 3-4 years if i remember correctly.
It is also important for pathing on passives and it is more immportant then ascendancy
that skill tree
The skill tree definitely seems like a nightmare on first look, but it's fairly straightforward. The main objective for 99% of characters is to find all the life nodes you can reach, and then pick a route between them that lets you pick up the really important damage/utility stuff without going too far off that path. There are searchable versions online that highlight the nodes you're looking for to make it much simpler.
That's no mere skill tree. It's a skill forest.
Just was terrified first time playing it, went and searched it up, they have a passive one on their site so you can test stuff out without being in-game really useful, dw if you wanna learn the game easily played thou hard to master *insert othello image

When in doubt play Path of Exile.
Hint number 2: You can buy (quite cheaply) skill gems from every flask vendor (i.e. Nessa in Act1). There's page 2. So you don't need to create other chars for the gems or store them.
Id recommend health bars on allies for minion builds. Its just a quality of life thing to be able to see how your minions are doing.

I know this is an old video but, I have to say that it's very informative for new players like myself. Thanks Quill.
HOLY MOTHER OF G!! the moment i saw the skill tree i started the download for this game. I always thought it was a weird game game where people run around doing something was never interested but damn i wanna get into the knitty gritty of that skill tree-circle thing.
Few hints.
1. The flask vendor (Nessa in Act 1) sells gems you've unlocked via quests now! They are dirt cheap and you buy them leveled up, so you can experiment a lot more!
2. You can turn on minion life bars in UI settings. Makes things cluttered when you have 10 zombies and 20 raging spirits, but it's good info to have at a glance.
3. "Hybrid" is very popular for summoners. Get BOTH life and ES and Mind Over Matter for a huge eHP pool!
4. I know you said you don't like trading, but I can't emphasize enough how much a pair of Bones of Ullr boots are almost mandatory for a classical summoner. For a Chaos or an Alch, the price is well worth the social interaction. Lvl 22 req.
5. Use those Essences! Just spam them on any item with 3L+ and jewelry. This league is easy in regards to leveling gearing since you get so many rare items, you're bound to craft or find some pretty powerful stuff.
Zombies tend to be pretty useless in the beginning but if you focus on them they become pretty much immortal in the mid-late phase. Also summoners have the 'Raging Spirits' spell as their "cast to speed up kills" and it's pretty fun since it scales with your minion passives and supports instead of spell damage passives.
Always love some POE content! There's an option to show allied lifebars so you don't lose track of your zombies. Zombies scale surprisingly well into the late game, consider holding on to them
Quick tip: when you cast a new Zombie with your max already up, the new one will replace the one which is most damaged. Get in the habit of casting the summon once at the end of every group kill, and it'll be like "healing" the weakest one to full each time ... so you're stronger going into the next group.
Sorry to say, it replaces the oldest one summoned. I played summoner all last league, so if your newest one is almost dead, you have to re-cast all your summons of that likeness to refill it's HP, or just roll minion recovery on a life flask and they'll get healed from that, too.
***** What?!? That's terrible! Did they add a minion type that has duration? It's been at least a year since I used Zombies, but that part of the game had been in for so long it seemed stable.
yeah they did, summon skeletons and summon raging spirit are both duration based.
Raging Spirit must be when they made the change to "oldest minion". Skeletons were already in the game when it was still "most damaged". Thanks for the info!
Started watching this video, had never played Path of Exile before, promptly started, and got through Act 1 before I realized just how long I'd been at it. xD Quill is en enabler to gaming addiction!

This was the first build I ever did when playing this game. It was the first time I really thought of a minion master as a tank and not a damage dealer. There is a passive that applies your shield stats to all your minions - it worked very well to save me from my terrible initial build!
This is exciting. I backed this game way way back. Nice to see it again.
What the Holy shit. Quill playing my fav Civ empire, a new Stellaris run, and PoE is back? I'm in heaven. Guess watching Arumba's Factorio vids will have to wait.

Quill, if you liked Titan Quest, you should check out Grim Dawn. It was made by a bunch of people who worked on TQ, the class system is very similar, and some of the maps are somewhat random.
is it longer and/or harder? I liked TQ a lot but it was way too short and way too easy.
***** I think it's a bit harder, but I'm really not sure about length. Steam says I've put 154 hours into it, that's one character at max level and a couple of alts about halfway there.

Forget using steam, patches take too long. I use the launcher from GGGs site, much better.
I used the standalone client when I did the solo self found hardcore challenge. I didn't hate it, but I started on steam years ago, so thats where I'm gonna stay.
My PC and Steam are always running so the patching usually happens automatically when I'm sleeping or at work etc. Steam is a much better option for me at least.

There is no longer need to make new characters to double up on skill gems.
Every town now has a skill gem vendor (the one that sells potions), and those gems level up too as you progress, so its never too late to swap and try out something else.
Personally I would be very interested in a prolonged series with this game :) keep up the good work quill! love you!!!

Don't forget that you can buy skills from the Magic Vendor in each act, in Act 1, it's Nessa. So you could have had Tendrils from the start as well!

im a big fan of diablo 2, and what makes me go nuts for this game is the skill tree! im totally going to play this!

By the way, I would recommend not getting shield early on since it wouldn't add much defense. Dual-wielding wands would actually boost your damage and early progression more. For the same reason, I usually don't wear Body Armour through Act I(and sometimes even Act II) even in Hardcore. Both shield and armor have combined 6%-10% hidden movement speed penalty that would slow you down early, without adding much in return.

There actually is a difference in the classes when you get to ascendancies(through labyrinths) which make the class choices actually important.
Cast speed is perfectly fine with Summon Raging Spirit. Also, you can follow the inland rivers to find the glyphs if you're having trouble.
I really need to get back into this game. I played around 200 hours over the summer after I got it in June and I haven't played since... I really want to get back into it.

If you feel your zombies die alot try out the Decoy totem. It does wonders keeping your zombies alive.

So... no.
What they're saying is that he's intending to go with Summon Raging Spirits.
A discussion on what items you pick up vs. not. Unless you grab the consumables, scrolls; portal and identify. Then you only pick up items that are unique, rare. Then you did talk about quality of +20%. Was hard to determine what your not getting.
I tended to pick up EVERYTHING and sell it.
Very early you don't really need to pick up anything except currency orbs, (flasks and skill gems), and rares/uniques.
Picking up blues can be more harm than good, as you are required to identify them before using, and you can run out of wisdom scrolls quite fast, and same goes for whites, if you pick them up you clutter your inventory and run out of portal scrolls if you awnt to try and sell them.
So saving wisdom scrolls for rares and uniques can be a good idea (unless you really need upgarde for some slot)
This is a welcome addition to your playlists!

I just started as a summoner witch myself so I'll enjoy comparing builds
Hey, I haven't finished the vid' yet and haven't seen the second one, and I don't know how delayed we are in comparison to your playthrough, but... I played the same build as you quite recently, and you'll see, explosive minions is not particularly helpful (at least at the earlier lvls, like until at least 50). If you want to take every +1 minions, you'll grab lifeleech and regen which will make your minions nearly unkillable early on.
Also, I recommand you to:
- Use flaming skulls as your primary attack. It's summoning minions, so all your passives will impact them (*mentionned in vid*)
- Use a totem gem with the skelettons, since it allows you to click only once per clearing (avoiding you cast time and some micro-management) since they will only fight for 20 second max
- Grab some of those +mana/+mana regen passive and take the big node which make 30% of your damage inflicted at your mana, if you want to go with a lot of health. It grants a post-calculation 30% damage reduction if you've got enough regen to support it (*mentionned in vid*)
- Seek the corrupt gem with the spell that summon an army of undead. I don't have it yet, but it sounds like amazing fun
- Don't forget Desecrate, a dex spell that summons corpse, which can be useful later if your minions die too often
- You should turn on lifebar on allies, it will be easier for you to know if you're fine or if your wall of zombies is close to death
Also I haven't gone far on that, but auras and curses can be a good choice for your build too. After all, you're supporting an army, so acting a little bit as a support should probably be an interesting choice.
Also except for certain fights the fastest way to level is to be 2 level lower than the zone. If you are ahead of that target start running past monsters.
I would love to see Baldur's Gate return at some point. It was probably one of the few series that I followed all the way through.

Quill, do you know about ascendacies? I noticed none of your chars have ascended.
This has been lately introduced and it brings actual difference between the classes. You need to complete The Labyrinth a couple of times and you get quite unique and powerful skills. You should look them up.
Adding to this, any kind of physical damage mitigation is really helpful for the Labyrinth. Armor, Endurance charges (which you can get using Enduring Cry), Immortal Call, all of those things can help you survive both the traps and the actual boss, Izaro.
armour does jack shit in poe the mitigate phys u need flat mitigation or elemental conversion ur better off with a shit load of regen a decent life pool and atleast 1 bleed flask and a basalt check the armour calculations armour is poe's biggest noob trap
Are you sure that physical mitigation works on labyrinth traps? I'm 99% sure that most of them bypass mitigation and do a fixed percent of life/ES. At any rate, even if mitigation works, it's not necessary - most traps are trivialized by rushing through them with Quicksilver Flasks once you get the hang of it. Izaro is the real threat to worry about.

I get the feeling that there's a decent number of people who follow you that wouldn't mind partying you you in PoE. Might be an interesting subscriber multiplayer thing.
I think the main reason he doesn't play co-op games is that, unlike most dedicated PoE, Destiny, Warcraft etc. streamers, people would complain in the long run that he never played with them, since this is just a side game for him.

Titan Quest devs are back and released an Anniversary Edition by the way with a ton of improvements and fixes (free for everyone who had the gold edition on Steam). Grim Dawn is very close in terms of the class mechanics and considered TQs spiritual successor though, haven't got that yet though.
PoE was too slow paced for my taste and I don't like the micro transactions.

Don't do it quill, don't go down the PoE road. It will consume you.
So I love PoE and I had no idea you tinkered with the game so it should be fun to watch you try and learn the game because one if the main issues PoE has is the steep learning curve for newer players. Im interested in if your going to be able to overcome that hump and make it to end game successfully and start mapping.
Also do have a goal for your build or are you just eyeballing it and going with the flow, because if you want an idea for your build then I would advise leveling as Summon Raging Spirits and eventually getting a 4 link helm and getting the stat +1 level to minion gems in your helm (you can just alteration spam for it). Once you get to act 3 merciless difficulty you can start using specters with your SRS because the flame sentinels make fantastic summons. I assume you want to go full summoner and not just Summon Rage Spirits by the way you talked. You can just summon zombies whenever you want for tank walls because zombies arnt that great for dps and I would advise avoiding skeletons, they are pretty bad unless you know how to make a summon skeleton build, and even then its a pretty niche build.
If you tinker with using specters earlier I would advise just using tanky specters since trying to use a specter for dps early game generally doesnt work due to the mechanics of how summons are the level of the zone so you will end up needing to replace specters too often, and when you change specters you need to change support gems to support their damage which requires constant recoloring of sockets and its not really worth it, but if you just use tanky specters early game you can just link minion life with fortify or minion elemental resist and your zombies. This makes it so you dont have to change support gems often from changing dps specters (note this is for leveling and not for later in the game).

You dont have to listen or copy what I tell you, im just giving you some common knowledge on how summoners work normally. If you have different plans though then go for it and learn as you go. Also you can go to options and make health bars appear above everyone head which is nice to be able to see your minions life.

When you start fresh, is it not worth picking up everything to trade for identify/portal scrolls? I haven't played in a year (probably a lot longer actually) and didn't get far back then anyway but I remember running out of identify scrolls early on.

After you grow bored of this, try a Vortex Trapper build. I'm playing one right now and it's great!
They put a lot more effort into this than Blizz seems to put into D3. I still enjoy D3, just wish they'd do a bit more with it.
The new game is without the 7th character ... there are: witch, marauder, templar, duelist, ranger & shadow!
The last time I played this I was a ranger going a face tank build, I then very early wanted to go melee for some reason. My friend was so annoyed.

Abt PoE, after you are done with today episodes, upload/record act boss fights? Also with Acendency, picking a class is less cosmetic than before. (Ascendency is a small sub tree unique for ea exile unlocked via completing a special areas through 3 difficulties+Maps)
I really wish you kept on going with Path of Exile, because I always feel sad when you stop. =/

path of exile reminds me of a wierd cross between final fantasy 7's materia system, final fantasy 10's leveling sytem, and diablo 2.

My brother's been way into this game for a while, although we both also play D3. Going to watch this series and see if I can get a better sense of why, because I found it pretty boring after a few hours into the game myself.
It's D3 with a soul. I'm sure D3 is fun, but PoE is nitty-gritty-suck-you-in-for-1000-hours-fun.

hey quill if you like this style of game you should try Grim Dawn, its the best flexibility that i ever seen in this kind of game, its from the same devs as Titan Quest but with even more advanced system, it has multiclass system and a "constellation" system that is path of exile esque. you wont regret :)
did they change the item filter now? Im trying to find it in the UI tab and it's not there for me.
Personally I would have still gone down the Spell damage side of the tree and then crossed over for the minion related skills.
I'm new to the game so don't know. Isn't it a good idea to collect the flasks and combine them to make larger ones?

I fail to see what's supposed to be SOOOO ''bad and horrible'' about them, and how 'this' is better ?
I think he was talking more about the intense inventory micro-management that Diablo 2 introduced.
That doesn't exist anymore in A-RPGs now.
Lord of destruction changed the system a lot, introducing a lot of automation to how it worked, but D2 was kind of a nightmare, having to pause the killing every few minutes to manually put potions in the belt so you can use them without having to open the inventory, or being hard to know how many potions you actually had in your belt, since you could only see one row of potions, no matter how many you had.
Also, in higher difficulty levels, most of the game was dependant on how many potions you carried with you at all times (you used to hear a lot the phrase "I am fine, I am fine, I am fine... I am out of potions? I am dead, I am dead, I am dead"). You can see this in people doing speedruns. 90% of their inventory is filled with potions all the time.
So, if you mix the high dependency on potions all the time (in higher difficulties, at least) with how awful the potion system was... you can probably imagine why Quill doesn't like it.
PoE has a pretty good system, in my opinion. Not only does it eliminate all micro from the system, it even adds a cool extra game mechanic.
Not to mention, PoE has a few super cool potions that do all kinds of crazy things, which also adds to the fun.
So... yeah, if you compare this system with how it used to work, especially in vanilla D2, PoE is in a completely different league.

Obviously the traditional potion system isn't the worst thing ever made, but it obviously pales in comparison to Path of Exile's flasks.
The audio on this for me is really really low and nothing but bass. If I crank it up I only hear muffled bass and can't hardly make out the words. This only happens to me on SOME youtube content and I cannot figure out what is going on. Can anyone give me advice to fix this?
