It's completely timeless design and still very beautiful car. If you didn't know, this would still look like a $150.000 car. And hey, it's a Mercedes-Benz. I love it.
I talked my boss into buying an S420. The ABC suspension failed and the day after she bought it (brand new) she went to the garage to go to work and the car was sitting on the floor and had to be towed in. The dealer had it for 2 weeks. Then after 6 months it started to rust at the bottoms of the doors. Mercedes repaired it (under warranty) but it started again a year later. Comand failed regularly and the power steering pump failed twice. She turned it in when the lease was up and bought a Lexus that she kept for ten years. The fact that I didn’t get fired tells me what a great boss she was
Oh wow. Thanks for sharing. I would say she just got a bad luck with her car as all the failures she had while common, should not happen to a brand new car. I always say that you don’t want to buy the 1st year German car regardless of the brand.
I could only be the S430, since 420 doesn't exist. I have it as a daily driver even now. It is the model from 2000 and literally everything on it works well. Sound like your boss just picked one rotten apple from the batch
Love your review ... I've owned three W220's and every time I swear 'Never again' ... when working they are simply outstanding ... the design IMO is timeless and has aged well ... if you are prepared to work on them yourself and have a high end scanner they can be maintained for a reasonable (in s class terms) cost 🤔
I own 03 S600 its literally an amazing car and very underrated. M275 is a brilliant motor and the most reliable v12 you will find on the open market. The car looks and feels amazing.
W220 after the facelift is completely different car, i mean almost all parts are different from interior, electronics, exterior and it becomes really reliable. I bought one few years ago (facelift) - it is over 20 years old now, got maybe 1000 000kms and it is still on the road and it is perfect. Today it is very old car, so ofc there are issues with gaskets and rubber elements, but beside that i dont see any other brand from this era on the road (7 series, A8s), but i still see a lot of W220s.For me W140 was iconic, but it is very old looking and for young person it doesn't look good, w220 is the best option - timeless design, cheap to maintain (tons of aftermarket parts), good options and everything. W221 currently is super expensive to maintain for such an old car, 7g tronic sux, engines (especially diesels) are nightmare to maintain and unreliable. So if you find to buy w220 s500 under 150k kms facelift i guarantee you will have awesome time with this car!
Thank you for a humorous and at the same time thorough review of one of my favorite cars! To specify a couple of items: The hood should be very easy/light to open/lift. if it is heavy, the struts have to be replaced (06:30). The wheel on the side of the back seat is not for massage, but for the support of the lumbar. It was actually optional with massage even in the back seats, but the control panel for the massage looks different (the same layout as for the front seats) (13:35).
W220 s320 cdi owner, cost me £2000 and I just can’t believe what I’m driving for the money, every drive is a special occasion and has been incredible reliability wise
If I could afford the maintenance and repairs....that'd be my dream car. Car yes, maintenance would probably eat me unless I did most of the work which I'm sure I can. Some things you need special equipment...like having to flush and refill the trans fluid under a particular temperature. Definitely a rare gem! 💎
Aftermarket parts aren’t as expensive as OEM from the stealership. Fcpeuro saves the day. But it is still going to be more expensive than a corolla for sure 🤝
I used to sell these cars in 2004. I hand delivered a S600 to a funeral home owner. I almost wrecked it because all that torque came on and didn’t realize how powerful it was. The entire interior has Nappa leather, which is the softes leather you can put in a car
Solid drivetrain with an awesome interior. The old mercedes smell instantly brings back memories. Only shortcoming is the abc system. Never knew the s600 had a twin turbo like the s65.
In terms of automobiles, German luxury and sport models are wonderful and probably the best in the world...when newish. Later, the reliability and maintenance woes begin piling up and ruin the overall ownership experience. It's the same with aircraft, but the difference is that automobiles don't have to follow rigorous maintenance schedules.
Maybe you missed it. I said the wheels didn’t belong to the particular car I was filming but they were S600 wheels so the owner put them on. Those wheels were on a different trim, I assume. Big thumbs up for the S600 love.
I think that the W220 Sonderklasse is a sleek elegant stylish design. It was so much curvier than the boxy W140 Sonderklasse which I love the most. Daimler was forced to do some serious cost cutting on the W220 Sonderklasse due to the high R&D cost of the previous W140 Sonderklasse. Supposedly the Daimler CEO at the time thought that Mercedes were over engineered and started increasing profit margins too much beginning with the W210 E-Class which would explain the horrible reliability until around 2006 when they began returning to reliability and higher build quality. The rule of thumb for modern Mercedes-Benz models is to stay away from any Mercedes-Benz built while George W. Bush was president 😂.
Do you mean the rev limiter? If yes, I think it revs a bit higher in sport mode, but is still limited. Most Mercedes are limited in revving in stationary.
@@AccentOnCars next to the shifter, there’s a switch that has S and C.. you can flick the switch to sport which gives more power and tightens the suspension or comfort which limits power for comfort
Everytime when Renntech is mentioned - it kills the product. Bad quality work and value drops. For example Renntech parts for M156 sucks bad. Airflow is better on stock m156 ...
Interesting…. While I agree that there are better bang-for-buck brands out there, Renntech is generally seen as a solid brand in the USA and is one of the few that officially MB dealers will use. Are you sure you’re not thinking about a different brand?
@@AccentOnCars no, these are the Renntech parts so far in Euro area. Germany, France, Sweden, Finland, etc. When renntech is mentioned - people do not want to touch them here.
Also had here one Renntech stage 2 SL55 AMG and torque, airfolw, horsepower figures were kind a bad. Some horses more yeah, but the cost of there is stunning and part quality not so good.

I have a 2006 S55. I absolutely love this car. You couldn't make me an even trade for a brand new Mercedes.

new mercedes look all the same.... ewwwwwwwww

Old MBs aged so well. The EQ lineup won’t age like this 😀
@@AccentOnCars Oh yeah. Is there some kind of law or rule that all electric cars have to look horrible? LOL.
They are trying to make it drag efficient and look futuristic. I think most of them look like 💩 . Audi e-tron looks good, imho

Wish he could’ve mentioned the year unless I missed it. I have the 01’ with 120k on the clock. The AMG Sport Package 😎

I own an '03 S55 AMG (493hp/516 lbs ft tq), same exact body, such a nice daily driver. Once you've driven an AMG, you'll not want a regular MBZ.

Great paint job on this one

I have the s430 from 06 and still looks and drives like a 100,000 car. Bought it for 3500 with only 116000 miles, no lights on the dash.

Drivetrain is the only thing that the adjective “solid” can be applied to in W220 😀👍 I agree with old MB smell 100%.
