I've owned the #1 on this list (W140) and the #5 (W220). I actually bought the W220 first. It was a 2006 S500 4-Matic. After driving it for several years, I would have to say that it does tend to get a bad rap. Yeah, the Air-Matic system was bound to go bad, but other than that, I put about 50,000 miles on it (after purchasing it with about 100K on the clock) and it was really pretty trouble free. I would actually recommend these cars, as long as you go into it knowing you are probbably going to have to deal with the Air-Matic system. I just look at it as a maintenance item. After 10 years or 100,000 miles, just plan on fixing it (or do like I did and get the coil shocks instead, which worked just fine). The W140 is a car that was pretty much everything I expected it to be. Very big, roomy, and solid as a bank vault. I didn't pay much for it, but it was 22 years old when I bought it and had about 190,000 miles on it. I saw it on a local car lot and decided that since I had always wanted one, I would pull the trigger on it. The one thing that I didn't expect was that, after driving the W220, the W140 did feel like a much older design. The W220 felt more refined and modern, and living in Minnesota, I missed the 4-Matic's all wheel drive. In spite of this, I will say that, for whatever reason, I always just felt better when I was driving around in the W-140. There is just something about the regal presence you get with the W-140 that is somewhat lacking in the W-220.
Thanks for sharing, as this is helpful insights. I don't own any S class, but would consider getting a used one someday. I can't decide which I want more between the W221 and the W140. I expected the W140 to top most lists. But would the sacrifice in refinement be worth it? It is an old car, and I am afraid I might miss a lot of the modern refinements. Even though the W126 ranks higher than the W221 on this list, I don't consider it because I think this is a little too old for me to use as a daily driver.
@@fazz27 Yeah, the W126 would be at the bottom of this list for me. My dad had an '87 560 SEL. It was a good road car, but other than that, it didn't do much for me. It's handling felt kind ponderous compared to the later cars. Best of luck with whichever car you decide to get!

I've owned lots of Mercs but only one S Class gen. I've got a 221 S600 V12 - that I recently rebuilt on my channel. They're just incredibly well built / solid cars. My rich self would love a 222 S65. My current financial self would love a 220 S55 113k :P
As a former W220 owner and a current W221 owner, I would like to recommend W221. In my opinion, W221 is a best looking and extremely reliable flag-ship model. I love W221.
Omg I have been looking for this type of video that covers the history of the model and makes recommendations for so long. I’m wondering since merc had to silence their 4.0 twin turbo v8 in later generation due to regulation are you able to highlight when those changes happened in popular models like the amg gt, e and a class, etc.
Ah, I still remember the first time I sat in the pre face lift S 600 V12 W221. It was a different planet. Massage, responsive seats, ventilation, refrigerator, the things that the V12 did... oh Lord. 260 on Highway and you are like in a couch. More than ten years have passed and I still love the W221, facelifted one though, but that design is timeless!
I am probably in the minority but I like the original W 221 better than the face lift one! The side mirrors are nicer and suit it more also I like the body colour integrated into the rear tail lights!! But most people agree with you but I have really good taste so I do not expect to be in the majority as good taste is rare. I am just kidding people can like and do like what they want and no one can decide what is better or better looking it is in the eye of the beholder.
W220 will always have a bad rep for early model year issues with rust, and cheaper quality of interior & exterior components when compared to W126 & W140. I still kind of agree with these being last ranked of all the S-classes, but these were still some of the most innovative cars for their time. I also consider it the sleekest and most svelte-looking S-class exterior design, in my opinion. The fact that I still see a handful of these 20-25 year old cars on a daily basis is also testament to their mechanical robustness.
I think their technology alone should put them higher. Sure they're not the nicest inside, but they have tech that other cars still don't have 20 years later like that active air suspension, body control, 4 wheel traction control, backup sensors, radar cruise control, active cylinder control Plus, that m113 is one of the most reliable v8s ever made too.
My '02 220 s430 is a CHAMPION! Only 160k miles and still going strong. I've been replacing certain parts here and there, general upkeep, and it's just as luxurious to work on as it is to drive
When you see a facelifted one in good condition, especially the AMG models, it really does look great. And the coupe (CL) is 10 times better even than that.
I was in Barcelona for the W221/W216 launch …. Probably still have the photos somewhere. I own a CL600 W215 - Love it. The W221 is a great looking four door vehicle.
very good video, I loved that you chose the W140 at the top, this is the model i had and I truly agree its probably in my oppinion the best car ever made in the world. it oozed quality and style still looks awesome today, its the last of the best quality Mercs, it was the most solid and comfortable car, way outperforming all its rivals.
The 126s have always been a favorite of mine. My dad worked for a Mercedes dealer from 1973-1993 so those are my favorites. From the SEC to to the SL and the S. Still my favorite to this day. But there are a lot of nice other one's as well. Ain't nothin like driving a Mercedes 🤘🤘
The W140 and W221 are the most distinct S-Classes to me, the others are basically elongated C-Classes (at least at first glance). They also have this Yakuza/Russian Mob Boss vibe about them which I like.
I enjoyed the ownership of a 1968 300SEL6.3 35 years ago. An incredible muscle car drinking a lot. But under a classical shape the performance was stunning, until you got into a curve in slippery conditions! You had to be very careful in a time where ABS or ESP were inexistant. I now enjoy a 1991 560 SEC and it is for me the most reliable S class you can dream of. Still very modern and comfortable in this 21st century. I would have ranked it number 1 and its design is beautiful. You drive 1,000 km at 140 km/h and you understand what real comfort means.
My dream is the classic W126, but the availability of parts and the hassle of maintenance worries me. Second for me is probably the W221. Very beautiful, and the quality seems OK.
I used W126, used W140 used W220 and and am using and still have W221. My best and favourite of all withouth any doubt is W140. I wish to have it again, same old body and components but all the inside with W221 or W222 inside components etc. I REALLY LOVE W140.
I'd say the most iconic S-class is the W108/109 especially due to the "Red pig" race car (the first EVER AMG mercedes) and also the stretched model the Grosser.
I had a W220 and it was awful. It’s the only car I ever bought that I regretted buying only moments after leaving the dealership. It was completely soulless and just deeply unenjoyable to drive. 6 months later it was gone with 0 regrets.
If my w221 s65 amg had the interior of a w223 the car would be pure perfection, I love the muscular body and unique styling of my car but I like the newer interiors better
My first Mercedes was an 04 E55 with the M113K. Then I bought an 07 S550 (W221) which I like very much. The E55 got totaled and I replaced it with a 2014 E63S (W212 with M157). Can't complain.
The quality of your videos always amazes me. I’m very thankful for the wealth of knowledge you share with the community. I probably saw each of your videos before buying my 2005 E55, now at 24k miles. Keep up the great work. It is very much appreciated.
I 100% agree with the W140 being the #1 S-Class, it is a legendary vehicle with a legendary background and reputation. It was truly ahead of its time, and features a timeless design that will never go out of style.
Some years ago I bought a superficial basket case W126 380SEL. 230,000 km. 2 days fixed the issues. Since then I have replaced the EIU, 1 self leveling unit, the chain guides and the chain while I was there. The gearbox needs a refresh. It is a sublime driving experience, and still gets looks. The only thing I miss are the never-an-option picnic trays. I enjoy the large steering wheel, far more comfortable than my CLK's one. As for the lack of power, try a 260E. However even it will cruise all day at our 100kph limit. BTW, I live in rural Oz.
My Benz specialist daily drives a W220 S65, thing looks amazing. The 2-piece 65 AMG wheels from that generation are one of my favorite wheel designs ever, maybe even more so than monoblocks
Excellent video, thank you. Were the W126 or W140 cars ever offered with manual transmission? Can you recommend a good reference work on the W140! Thanks
The W222 is my next Merc as I currently own 2 W221 a preface lift and a facelift model the preface lift most likely will get replaced with a w222 in the future
The W222 S-Class Coupe is the greatest, the beastly V12 combined with gorgeous luxury, man... The Cabrio looks very nice too. I do get why the W221 is so iconic though.
I've got a serious soft spot for the w220 despite it's flaws. My father worked at a Mercedes dealership when it came out. We used to drive an old Hyundai before and then he brought a s320 cdi with air suspension at home one day. As a little kid, that left a impression for life! Since then I became a real enthusiast for cars and especially Mercedes-Benz
Agree for top list. I think w140 is no1 bcs it is only S class that i tried and it was more than enough to feel that vibe only MB can give. Hope one day will save enough to buy one w140 for a life time car. Wish all best to everyone🥇
I had w126 500SEL, a w140 500, a w220 S55 AMG and now a W221 420CDI, I love all of them: the beauty of the w126, the strong and quality of w140, the performance of w220 in AMG and I could say the w221 is fantastic and the last old School S-class for ever
I agree on the 140. My 97 s320 was the base model and it was the most comfortable car I ever bought. Only issues I ran into were with the power mirror wiring still having the rotting coating that thru got rid of for the main harness after 96. So my power mirrors would blow the fuse for the power seats. And the inside rear mirror glass turned a weird brown, something to do with the aging auto dim goo.
I purchased a W220 last year that was sitting for 3 years and has 33k original miles. I would give that car up any day to have the W140. Still My favorite S Class of all time.
Ah the S class. If one ever wanted to know what features a regular vehicle would have in 10 years all you had to do was look at the current S class.

Great video! I just bought a 2012 S63, I love it
I've owned lots of Mercs but only one S Class gen.
No one can top the W140!
I'm drooling like a child in a candy shop with all those beautyful and marveloud vehicles.
excelent video!
Truly an icon of motor engineering ❤
I love the W221 and the W222. I say this as the owner of a W211 haha.
W221 Facelift models are so beautiful and still look modern, I need one.
@@erics9754 The pre-fl isnt ugly at all! Just way outdated with the lights. The facelift headlights and DRLs look awesome as well as the tail lights.
Ahhh Calista…talk about a walk down memory lane. So fitting for the w140. The song matched the period
I absolutely agree. W140 is the undisputed King of Mercedes. I would have placed W126 second though. Other than that no arguments. Great work.
My first Benz was a 1999 W140. It was a great car when everything worked. When I bought it it was about ten years old & started to nickel and dime me.
W220 S280 until now I'm still using it even though I'm not driving daily.
very good video, I loved that you chose the W140 at the top, this is the model i had and I truly agree its probably in my oppinion the best car ever made in the world. it oozed quality and style still looks awesome today, its the last of the best quality Mercs, it was the most solid and comfortable car, way outperforming all its rivals.
Good video… I’m researching the w222 s600(non-Maybach)… I guess it’s too obscure even for the Meister himself.
They also have this Yakuza/Russian Mob Boss vibe about them which I like.
w140 is the best s class. i ve own it for more then 20 years and still no problem. mine stil 14.000 km from brand new. salam dari Indonesia
W220 by far!! Of course, I'm biased after owning three of them 😄
I enjoyed the ownership of a 1968 300SEL6.3 35 years ago.
My favourite was the w220, i always liked this generation of mercedes
Could you do a video on the CLS class next?
My order would be the same. W140 is a true icon. But my ultimate dream is W222 S65 AMG in dark blue with silver wheels.
I used W126, used W140 used W220 and and am using and still have W221. My best and favourite of all withouth any doubt is W140. I wish to have it again, same old body and components but all the inside with W221 or W222 inside components etc. I REALLY LOVE W140.
Love your clips. Also nice touch with old clasic NeedForSpeed in game menu soundtrack.🥂
another great video. good stuff man
I'd say the most iconic S-class is the W108/109 especially due to the "Red pig" race car (the first EVER AMG mercedes) and also the stretched model the Grosser.
I had a W220 and it was awful. It’s the only car I ever bought that I regretted buying only moments after leaving the dealership. It was completely soulless and just deeply unenjoyable to drive. 6 months later it was gone with 0 regrets.
Enjoyed your video. I have a W140 but am selling it. Lack of parts and skills on my side 😉
I absolutely love my W222 , it is everything I could ever possibly want in a car , and then some
If my w221 s65 amg had the interior of a w223 the car would be pure perfection, I love the muscular body and unique styling of my car but I like the newer interiors better
Got to be the best series of cars ever made as have never been beaten by there competition. Would have swapped 1st and 2nd place thought. Great video.
I 100% agree with the W140 being the #1 S-Class, it is a legendary vehicle with a legendary background and reputation. It was truly ahead of its time, and features a timeless design that will never go out of style.
my exact ranking. #1 and 2 are very close in points and some could argue a switch for placement.
Hey! Can you please do an episode on the M119 and the M104 engines? Thank you!
That was awesome ❤
Excellent video, thank you. Were the W126 or W140 cars ever offered with manual transmission? Can you recommend a good reference work on the W140!
Thanks
No
The S class has always been my favourite vehicle of any generation. That being said, w220 gets my vote. With time, the w222 will grow on me.
amazing video !
The W222 is my next Merc as I currently own 2 W221 a preface lift and a facelift model the preface lift most likely will get replaced with a w222 in the future
Good luck with the W222. Gorgeous S Class!
Any chance you could do something on the C217 S63 AMG Coupe? Obviously this is what I have, be interesting to know what you think about it?
The W222 S-Class Coupe is the greatest, the beastly V12 combined with gorgeous luxury, man... The Cabrio looks very nice too. I do get why the W221 is so iconic though.
This list was perfectly rated 👌👏
W221 💖 I bought a 13 year old S450 CDI. 4000cc V8.
Long live the W222. It turned 10 this May and it still looks fresh to me. Way better than the new W223 in my opinion.
The W223 is a mistake Mercedes has made it has lost its way and lost its class over to a tesla look.
Great work as always. Thanks.
1. W126
2. W140
Thats it
Came here to say this.

Had w140, w221, w220 and now a w216
I will say that for me the sweet spot is the W220 S55 2003-2005
