The eyes of the Laotian and Vietnamese government view our Hmong people as their enemy because our involvement in the war. I am Hmong and I was borned in the refugee camp after the war. I only heard about tales of the war but never knew the truth how the war began until I came to here to America. As so my elders, I don't think they had a clue what and why they fought. We were innocent hill tribe felts victim to the interests of others. All I heard was communists this or that when growing up until I got the chance to learn about the war. I hope that someday the Laotian and the Vietnamese government will be proud that they had a chance of the life time beaten the most vicious and powerful country at the time. Please love your people, we all had suffered enough. End the blamings and killings. Not reeducation but better communicates to one another.
I'm Vietnamese and I don't view Hmong as our enemy, same with our government. They recognized Hmong as one of the minority ethnic of Vietnam since the country foundation
How can I access communication with Q? I have a close friend from Laos. His family escaped. It’s an epic story. I’d like to connect the two so Eric and Ben can share their story and maybe even find some family who was forced to stay in Laos.
Even the hmong that sided with the communist party has perish from silent attack by Laotian leaders. There was a lot of hmong leaders that lead the communist troops during the civil war to fight against VP and the Americans, but where are they or their decendant now? Defamed or either killed and discarded from the very people they fought with. The commoners and the leaders who shows potential were all executed or spent life in re-education camp. There are very few hmong leaders in the communist party to date because they will and has always hated the Hmong. When they execute someome of their party espectially the hmong they blame the rebels which is the Hmong again. We have fought and died hard for that land but the Laotian takes the credit and carries the name at the end. The leaders of communist party doesn't even regonize the hmong who sided with them.
I lived in Laos between October 2004- June 2005 and loved it. The warmth and kindness of the people, the Buddhist passivity, the laid back vibe, the balmy tropical climate, the amazing food and beer. It was as close to paradise as I've found. Or so I thought. I became aware of the cruelty of the communists, their human rights abuses, social control and persecution of the Hmong very quickly. The Hmong fought back, as they've been doing since the 1960's, and a Western bar in Vientiane I frequented had a hand grenade tossed in and exploded during my tenure killing 2-3 people. Also two Swiss cyclists were killed by the Hmong insurgents on highway 13 between Vang Vien and Luang Prabang. A road I travelled several times. I doubt the Hmong would target the Western tourists or expats deliberately although that would bring publicity to their cause. Mystery to this day. Yet I loved it there so I overlooked the dark underbelly hidden from view and kept my mouth shut. I worked for an English language newspaper, the only one in the country, which was but a government mouthpiece. I felt sympathy for the destitute Hmong and when I encountered them in the countryside I slipped them a dollar or two. Doing more than that would've let to my arrest, deportation or worse. It's sometimes complicated and difficult to know what the right thing to do morally is. I still feel some guilt for 'working for the regime' when I knew the nature of it. Yet if one 'toes the party line' there's no problem. I feel a creeping sense of deja vu and foreboding in Australia today.
This will be the fate of all Hmong Americans if they get sent back to Loas... straight to the hill with one to the head, we are consider traders to the Laos communist.
If you includes east timor, laos will be second poorest country in southeast asia East timor would be better as indonesian province than australian pooppet
answer is yes. not the people but the governments from all countries that oversea to make sure laos gets its peace. hmong and laos were peaceful before the war. this is/was not the issue of hmong and laos, it was the issue of foreigners or aliens but laos communist took it into heart that hmong were with the foreigners side so they couldn't do anything to the foreigners. they go/went after the hmong. Answer is/was the asshole govts from other countries ignored the Laos Human Rights Abuses. the asshole govts also feeding cashes and weapons to the laos comm (govts) to finish the hmong. this is called the smarter you are the more mistake you make. the question is asking yourself, is the hmong die in the hand of laos comm or foreigner? you decide .... remember hmong also implies as laos, hmong and other minorities that were in the side of america govts or foreigners that involved in the war in laos.
The Insurgency in Laos is now very low-level. However, none of the three insurgent factions have officially stopped fighting.
