- Long time fans will remember that I had to leave the Bloodsport episode of Rental Reviews to fight in a very real Kumite. Unfortunately I died in that episode. I got better though and now it's time to talk about this true story that is totally made up! Joining me is my good friend Ryan Hickey from the Fright Night episode!

FUN FACT:Tony from Hack the movies won the real kumate in 1997
So funny about that cat sound. As a kid and teen I heard it also but it was usually during the crowd cheering and chants so associated it with someone whistling and cheering. It’s not a cat sound. It’s crowd noise being looped or reused. Now I get why this review had 4 cat sounds out of no where being played. Fun Easter egg!
I always thought it was a whistle sound effect
AH!
I legit thought it was my crazy cat.
I always heard it but figured it was crows noises. This is one of favorite movies up there with Terminator 2.
Speaking of pathological liars, I once knew a guy who always swore he was in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight rises and would constantly bring it up anytime anyone mentioned anything related to the movie, he also always claimed to be Italian which was just strange
Actually Jean Claude does have a tournament record under his real name "Van Varenberg". Now these were European point tournaments, not anything like UFC. But he does have a verified tournament record.
Wasn’t van damme an amateur kick boxer as well or had a few professional kick boxing matvhes
@@jimbowlan5804 yeah looks like he did that from 1977-1982 in Brussels, Belgium his home. Again it was under his real name Van Varenberg.
This movie rules. I dont care if it was exaggerated.
It's not exaggerated it's an outright lie lol.
To me this movie, kickboxer, Leonhart and street fighter are in the same universe. The street Fighter universe that never was.
Not to mention it was inspiration for mortal kombat
@@bigkmoviesandgames hence... a movie.
@@khaimk4r4su there are movies based on true stories though and this film claims to be based on a true story but it's not it's just a lie, none of the events in the film ever happened.
My grandma who was in her 70's when I was little had a thing for Van Damme and she had all his big movies at the time in a big fancy box with a lock and key. I was raised on Bloodsport and this damn movie influenced a lot of things in my life. To this day I need to watch this movie a few times a year. Best movie ever! Kumite! Kumite! Kumite!
This movie is the very reason I pursued MMA. But in my head cannon, Shingo died fighting in the previous Kumite. He prematurely went and got killed. This is why Tanaka didn’t want to train anyone. And Frank saying he wanted to honor him, was his way of saying well let me not make the same mistakes as I did with shingo. It’s great story telling.
Oh dude! That’s an awesome backstory. I definitely can see that being possible and way better than the vague no answer in the movie.
That’s basically what happens in kickboxer. Tong po puts his brother in a wheel chair pushing him to seek out a badass old kung fu master to train him so he can beat tong pos ass in the end.
Well that is what happened. There's a scene in the movie where Shingo says he's gonna fight in the kumite and make his father proud, then we find out about his death, so by the editing, it's assumed he died in competition.
hahaha I can’t wait 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Nice dig at the opening- little old school talking about tapes lore there
?
@@HackTheMovies Not to bring up sour points, there was an old guest host that would spin a lot of yarns, entertaining but turned out problematic
@@StoneysWorkshop OOOOH. We weren't talking about him. Mostly making fun of Frank Dux and kids who would do stuff like that in grade school.
@@HackTheMovies Yep, great episode, thanks for interacting!
JCVD did legitimately fight and win tournaments (mostly karate) in his teens and early 20s. Unlike Dux, there are multiple witnesses/records to this.
Don’t forget under his real name he was also on the Belgium national karate team.
You should do van damme's Double Impact. The special effects in that were really good
Dux's stories are way more insane than the movie. If you do the math, his Kumite had to have more participants than the population of the Earth. His master, Tiger Tanaka, was *literally* a James Bond character. And Dux was rewarded with an ancient sword but he lost it to save some children from pirates.
YAAAAARRRR, MATEY!!! ☠️
Check out viking samurai he interviewed frank and Sheldon the dude who helped write blood sport
@@jimbowlan5804Viking samurai makes so much Dux content
No, he sold it to pay the ransome, but the pirates did the dirty on him, so he had to go in and dim-mak all the pirates and rescue the kids himself. At least, that's ONE of the versions of that story that he's told.
You cannot get katana sword by stealing. It is very special sword. You must earn it.
I wasn't going to steal it.
Your not going to call the cops?
Not if we make a deal.
@@dewinter1411 What kind of a deal?
Yes that’s the one thing money can’t buy. Katana sword. It’s like the knife in surf ninjas
OK USA!
Huge nose Chinese
Gotta do *'Kickboxer'* bruh 👍🥰
Was there a cat in the backround? 😂😂😂
Without duke's we would never have one of the best martial arts films of all time or great video games. Let him embellish another script we need it.
Bolo Yeung horrified me as a young boy! Do the Workprint. Then do Sliders.
I always assumed that "cat noise" was someone in the audience doing a whistle. That sound is also featured in Kickboxer
I’ve seen this movie so many times and I don’t remember ever noticing it but I definitely think it’s just someone in the crowd
If I remeber right, someone did the math, (he claimed 56 consecutive knockouts) and in a bracket style tournament, for one person to fight 56 times, the starting pool would have to be like a million people, or some obscene number.
I saw The Quest in the theater. Damn I'm old...
Just glad to be watching Hack The Movies after a nice long weekend thanks Tony.
No, the jury is not out on whether taking hormones effects brain chemistry.
It does
Van Damme trained for 4 years and earned a spot on the Belgium Karate Team. He won the European professional karate association's middleweight championship as a teenager, and also beat the 2nd best karate fighter in the world.
European lol
His record is 18-1.18 wins by knockout and 1 loss! Not bad at all!
@FUBAR-bi8vx zero losses actually it was a Disqualification
I had Frank Dux in my Kumite Madness bracket when he registered those 56 consecutive knockouts. It was a single-elimination tournament, so there were at least 72 quadrillion (72,057,594,037,927,936) fighters in Kumite that year, which was about 14 million times greater than the world population at the time.
I literally bought Bloodsport and Timecop last week haha
Rental Re-do let's gooooo
I used to watch Bloodsport all the time... And those bloody cat noises used to get me... I was searching my room thinking there is a cat stuck somewhere in this house
Fun episode, guys. I thought we were hearing a Space Cat cameo.
I think its kind of funny how this Van Damme movie, along with others, had inspired Mortal Kombat and his character Johnny Cage who he had an influence over.
Fake? What do you mean? It's as true as true can be. Next thing you're going to disparage that really good documentary about the witch in the woods and that Italian one about cannibals. Bah!
Frank Dux was a straight cornball liar. Look it up!
Of course it is as true as those set of films about paranormal activity. Those events of course happened.
It's a shame we never got that Bloodsport video game. At least Jean Claude Van Damme is a video game character in Street Fighter the movie the game😊
Mortal Kombat yo
John who?
I started watching Freddy's Nightmares, I always wondered where the gif of him with the guitar came from and saw it on an episode
Tony, how can i complain about you reviewing only horror movies, when you dont review horror movies??
I love the Josh Barnett's Bloodsport blu-rays you got on display there + that Fighting Network RINGS T-shirt you're wearing! ;)
Sure could use a 'What's the worst American Ninja movie" now.
The only good thing about Mondays!
Need to do cyborg
Hilarious. I knew a Frank Dux kinda kid when I was a kid. Dude was a few years older and was a pimply-faced Metalhead type….looked kinda like a blonde Dave Mustaine meets David Koresh. Anyway, this was after The Crow came out and he would walk around the woods by the river near my house…”practicing” martial arts and showing off to me and my friends with his (obvious) tall tales about fighting. I remember one in particular where he said some guy said something to his girlfriend (never actually saw her though…) and this kid ended up fighting him and beating him up….said people had to pull him off of the other guy because he was actively trying to bite him in the neck and/or tear his throat out with his teeth. Did I mention this kid also claimed to be a vampire or a werewolf? 😂. Yeah dude….it’s like, “you’re not a vampire or a werewolf. You just have no friends.”
There was kid like that in my class who always claimed that Shawn Michaels was a good friend of his family and came over for holidays and so forth. He never had a thing to show for it, of course.
I love how at the end they just kept all the lies in the closing info text even with each release of the movie on new formats.
Glad to know Tony is also a fellow member of the Daniel Bernhardt fan club 🙏
There is not many of us by my count there are at least 3 lol!
The Code Man !
As someone who rewatched Sliders when it was all on Netflix years and years ago...you can basically stop after S3 lol
Can’t wait for Jean god damn!
Hack the movies with Tony! YESS!!
Great review, awesome movie. Funny story, around the 14 min mark I thought I owned a cat I didn't know about. That was fun
that movie had a great soundtrack
Son died in Vietnam?
I never saw Bloodsport but I did see Kickboxer.
I heard they're pretty similar except that JCVD dances in Kickboxer.
And very poorly at that. Ha!
Nice to see my grandpa Minoru Susuki ! Kaze Ni Nare!
Temple of Doom IS the best Indy movie ever made, I agree 100%. At last, someone agrees with me! Great taste, Mr. Belushi!
One of the best lies ever told. Blood sport.
I love this movie!
Automatic click of the like button bruh 👍😁
Without frank dux's bullsh*t we would have never got one of the greatest martial arts movie ever made love van damme
Tony you [curseword]!! I gave my cat shit like five times until I realized it was coming from the tv!!😂😂😂
Apologize to her, right now!!😅
Am I losing my mind, or does like every 5 minutes or so, I hear a meowing cat? 😅
Muhahaha! 🐱
I know TWO people that used to lie as bad as Dux, one claimed to be a Navy SEAL and martial arts master, we did grapple/jiu jitsu playfully once and he did tap me out so he did know something, but not as much as he claimed. One time a bunch of us were playing a video game, taking turns trying to beat the game. He went out for a cigarette while I was playing, came back in and someone else was playing, he said “awe you died” my friend who was playing said “yeah he ran into a gun fight with a knife, and that never works”, the SEAL said “it does work, I’ve done it before”. The OTHER guy I knew said he was a former spy for an organization he refused to name. I’m a film maker and we were working on a movie, this guy was a friend of an actor, which is how I met him. All the extras are getting suited up with prop weapons, he grabs two plastic throwing knives and says “man, this brings me back” the others look at him perplexed, he turns around and says “it’s hard to land a killing strike with these, but it sure does scare the hell out of the bad guys”.
On a different movie project we needed more bad guys, I said I know two guys who would work. These two former assassins have never met each other, so I wanted to get them in the same room together and mention to one in front of the other “oh hey, this guy also killed terrorists with knives, maybe you were in the same war!?”. Well the SEAL never showed up so I never got to watch them out bullshit each other.
Here in Brazil this movie is called "The Great White Dragon". They din't want put blood on the title, I guess.
When you are paid in Bison dollars it affords you a lot of cocaine lol
Marked out for the Minoru Suzuki cameo every time you cut to Ryan’s camera. That was a good match against Josh Barnett but not as good as Minoru Suzuki in Kaiju Mono, a movies I’s still waiting for Tony to review.
Perhaps they’ll review that movie for Castzilla vs The Pod Monster (and maybe watch some Suzuki Minoru & Ibushi Kota matches beforehand)
@@GabrielHernandez-rj4oo Would be a lot cooler if they did!
In real life, Van Damme did ballet to learn how to do the splits.
"Ku-mi-te, Ku-mi-te"✊✊
Considering how loosely filmmakers use the phrase "based on real events". A completey made up story isn't that big of a deal, as far as the movie is concerned.
I only remember this movie from the rental reviews episode lol
Monkey Style is an actual form of Kung Fu, the Shaolin Monks would study animals fighting styles and implemented them into forms like Monkey, Tiger, Snake, Crane, Eagle etc... some of the nameless kumite fighters in the movie used these styles as well
I knew a pathological liar who would lie about literally anything. To prove a point, I once said some random word and he immediately began to lie about his extensive knowledge about it. I used to lie about why my dad wasn't around. 😥
I appreciate the Daniel Bernhardt love. He’s a talented man and a good guy.
omg the cat sound at the end had my cat tripping lol
Bloodsport is the reason we have fighting games that aren't just guys in Gi's
LOL Mr. Tanaka’s tragic backstory is classic overkill
I'm forever mixing this up with Kickboxer and I hope I'm not alone.
31:00 In sixth grade, there was a jock kid in my class who claimed to be a blackbelt in every martial art, and I believed him because he was intimidating.
Two things I think of when I hear Blood Sport. Chong Li' wide fucking chest, and that dude that gets his knee kicked in sideways
I can't wait for Hulk Hogan's bio where he turned down Metallica
Love the ep as always but you can really tell that Jess is gone. 😂
So tapping out is saying, Ma tei, or mike Matei?
For the first 35 minutes, I couldn't figure out which one of my cats kept meowing while I was watching this...
Frank Dux in the movie was blindfolded alot during the montage training scene with his shidoshi so the ending was warranted when he got blinded by Chong li and its not ROY. Its RAY!!!
Bloodsport is beloved here in my country to the point people actually wrote books about the bullshit story
I never knew of a Bloodsport 2 and had to pause this to find the trailer. It’s actually a decent looking movie. If it didn’t have the sequel title, I would still watch it if I had known about it. Since it’s on here, I’ll check it out later tonight at work.
Dang, is that David Koechner?
But has anyone seen the great HK movie Bloodfight? It’s amazzzzing.
I like that you mention Quest which is basically the same movie BUT you forgot about Lionheart....which was also the same movie. I expect another apology video.
ok you got Bloodsport covered, I vote that you do Kickboxer, Hard Target, Double Impact or Double Team. What you say Tony?
I used to know someone who thought it was Bloodspurt, and always called it that.
In Mexico, Kick Boxer was sold as Bloodsport 2.
I remember watching this as a kid, and I loved the movie before they flashed “true accomplishments” of Frank Dux. Then to find out how much of a wacko Frank Dux was, I mean, it would have been just fine as a fictional movie. Dux could have been an action movie producer.
I showed my boyfriend bloodsport and kickboxer and he said kickboxer was targeted at women, my dad and I watched a lot of Jean Claude van Damme so I never looked at the movies that way, but about 60% in I just said "okay. I can't deny what you're saying anymore. He was totally being pushed as a sex symbol for women"
That's why Roger Moore is in The Quest!!
I saw one of the many YT videos exposing Dux as a scammer. Napoleon Blownapart I think is the channel name.
He said that Dux was obsessed with James Bond all his life. I didn't know Dux was attached to The Quest.
18:00 I love you guys talking about performance enhancing magic beans 🤣.
43:25 “So yeah, Frank goes up against the least imitating guy ever.”
Uhhh, I think you meant ‘intimidating’, Tony lol.
What's the difference if Bruce Springsteen ish hish Shidoshi???
13:49 unintentional space cat cameo? I heard it somewhere else in the video too but can't remember lol
Keep watching...
wasn’t there an italian guy? what of the mustache guy?
Love Bloodsport. Such a fun movie to check your brain at the door and watch with friends.
I thought I was going crazy hearing the cat meows. I also thought i was going to see Space Cat hanging out by the mic. 🤣
So that's why they call a person that lies a lot a "pathological liar". But they're also saying that it's sort of like a a mental behavior issue. Some do it to protect themselves from the truth if it's bad. And they just can't stop it's like an addiction.
I like to drugs or alcohol. It is really very bad just like any other addiction
@43:29 who is that guy imitating?
The Quest is actually REALLY good!!
I like how this movie basically says torture is just a form of extreme exercise and would not make your body worse 🤷♂️😂
What happened to the looping background music? It's always been something that makes this show feel a step above others.
I think I forgot to add it to this episode. My bad, there was a lot going on behind the scenes. A few months ago, I switched out the song because the old one was getting claimed by youtube even though it came from their library originally. It's still there though.
