Tony and Crystal already answered the question as to why Freddy returns…Kristen stirred him up by worrying about whether he’d come back. The dog pissing fire is just a cool and unique way to bring him back….see, as a Nightmare fan, what I always tuned in for were 1.) inventive kills, 2.) how they bring Freddy back from the last film, and 3.) how they kill Freddy in the film I’m watching. Everything else is just icing on the cake….the fact that the kids here are so great is just bonus.

This is one of the best and most underrated 80 slasher films, and a “A Nightmare on Elm Street” series highlight. Alice is a great final girl with a relatable arc of going from mousy to ass kicker, it’s got inventive direction and beautiful sets. Creative kills and dreams, likable victims, fun soundtrack. Fun fact: Freddy's resurrection was actually director Renny Harlin's idea. At one point, James Cameron approached Harlin and asked him "So how is Freddy gonna come back this time?" and Harlin replied "A dog pisses fire."
Bonus fact: This is the only sequel in the series Wes Craven likes. According to Rennie Harlin, he said "Wes loved it. It was important to base the film in images the audience loved and would remember from the first film. Wes came to the first screening and sent me a letter saying how much he liked it. I thought that was a nice compliment." (Which kinda explains the Tuesday Knight cameo in New Nightmare and the effects crew, on Part 4, KNB studios returned for the effects, with the demon at the end resembling a demon Part 4 Freddy.)

    Great review as alwqys...again :D
Thanks for bringing up my comment about the D!ck-Freddy! Speccial Effects maker Kevin Yagher and Director Chuck Russell talk about it in the "Never Sleep Again" Documentory. Russel apperantly approved of the concept because the clay used for the mockup was green, but Yagher alwqys intended to make it fleshy colored. One thing i kinda got wrong was that he stated they covered one of the used Snake-Freddys in green slime because they didnt have time for painting it. But they don't talk about the other used one, you can also see the original color in some behind the scenes pictures. So it is likely they recolored the other used ones green in editing. Why they actualy show it in it's red color in FvJ is never stated, so maybe they used original negatives that were not color changed, or they colored it back as a nod to the intended design.

I think no one brought him back, exactly. I think he was like Sauron after Isildur cut off the One Ring from his finger. Freddy was still alive but couldnt manifest fully. I actually dig all the sequels, but 4 might be my least favorite. It’s awkwardly still trying to feel connected to 3 (the recasting is distracting too) in tone and style while leaning too far into the goofier side of things. I don’t mind that though. I like the MTV generation vibe of it, but the loony tunes antics I can buy more in the totally ridiculous Freddy’s Dead. That movie is dumb, but it embraces that tone. The real criminally underrated sequel is the Dream Child. That one is really visually inventive and pretty thematically interesting.

I've seen: A Nightmare On Elm Street, A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and Wes Craven's: New Nightmare. Have seen tiny bits of parts 4 to 6. Still have to watch the sequels some day.

whenever one of Alice's friends dies she goes thru the quickening from highlander. there can be only one "dream master"
or at least that's how i interpreted it 🤷

No, Alice gets the farts, and she is trying to prevent their expulsion. As if having to deal with Freddy and her father wasn't enough. Poor girl.

You could argue that Freddy gets the victims souls from the beginning.
Remember Nancy finding her friends belongings in the first movie? Remember the screams from the furnace fire?
That would explain Freddy becoming more playful and cheery with each following sequel.
He has his highest kill count in part two- and his most significant character change between this one and part three.

i still remember watching HBO's exclusive behind the scenes making of Elm Street 4 back then in late 1980s early 1990s. I thought it was cool for HBO to air that at the time.

To be fair that was not an HBO exclusive. It aired in syndication at the time the movie came out. I vividly remember watching it on KCAL Ch 9 here in the Los Angeles area at my friends house. We always talked about how cool the giant Freddy was that was used in the movie.

yeah, the aristotle reference is what the "dream master" idea comes from. that there is a positive gate and a negative gate when a person dreams. and skilled dreamers can control what get's in. that is why freddy says "i've been guarding my gate for a long time, b*tch." and then SHOWDOWN. cue "everybody was kungfu fighting".

@KICKBOXER27 I disagree. Dream Master is a fun movie, and certainly better than the next two, but it's a step down from any of the previous films. Freddy is a full on pop icon here, and no longer scary. I think this is where the decline starts.

@@SomethingThatSCREAMS Freddy isn't scary in Dream Master but he's still intimidating and fun to watch and the lead character is likable. The series already stepped down with Nightmare 2 yes Freddy is scarier in that movie but that script is not a good sequel story for a sequel to the original Wes Craven Classic its a decent time waster. Nightmare 2 is a better stand alone movie then a sequel to Nightmare 1 its better as a random gay metaphor movie then as a sequel to the first because compared to part 1 the script is loaded with logic flaws. Anyway the point is the series already declined with part 2 then came back up with Dream Warriors part 4 was the logical evolution of the series after the popularity of 3 and was the version of Freddy that audiences wanted at the time.
