I wake up in cold sweat when I dream he’s coming through the attic trap door (my room Was in the attic for most my childhood) Roaring my name in fury like the Hulk...and I’m trying to use my weight to stop him. The door is lifting and banging up and I’m pushing down so hard. I had it like this growing up... Got into it once with my stepdad. I literally packed my mom's things up FOR HER and we left. We were good as gone for a weekend, but unlike DiCaprio and his mom in this movie, we went back. I walked in the old house and mom was getting the cases out the car. Pops was drinking himself to death and I had to carry him to the shower to have him come to. When the water got him out of it he looked up, started crying, stood up, grabbed me fast for a hug, and I wasn't even half scared of him at that point. The man was stressed beyond belief, working himself mentally and physically into the ground. Now that I'm 28 and have been working about as hard as he was, I do house demolitions, I understand how easily it can be to slip into depression trying to provide. The next day or two, mom admitted all the cheating and everything throughout childhood. Him and my mom may have gotten divorced, but he was still never just a stepdad. Moral of the story, there's a lot of time in our short lives. You can either forgive and move on alone, or you can forgive together. All I know is him and I are as close as we are because of that fight, and seeing him like that.
This is what brought Leonardo DiCaprio to Martin Scorsese's attention, as De Niro praised him to Scorsese and told him that he was good. Scorsese has said that it was unusual for De Niro to praise a fellow actor...
I feel bad for Robert De Niro's character in this movie. He reminded me a lot of my dad and on surface level it is easy to hate him. But there is always a lot more to things like this. At the time, it was easy to hate him, but now that I am older and look back and have a bit more knowledge about my dad and his past and have a better understanding of everything, I felt really sorry for him. There are things about his life which I still won't know or understand, but from what I do know and understand now, I have a lot of sympathy for him.
Yes, exactly this! Something about the way he repeats "What about me?" makes me feel like he went through the same pain he inflicted on his stepson. Makes me want to cry for the younger version of him.
Your sympathy is true, and compassionate, and valid, don't ever change it. Sadly it's also exactly why women stay. Why they waste their lives believing that "what about me" is a good enough reason not to leave. (Almost) no one is wholly evil, and there are many reasons to have sympathy for those who destroy the lives of others, because they were born or created 'needy' or selfish. We can always find the good in them if we try. But STAYING won't make His Life Better. It will only serve to destroy both lives. She will never make him happy. She can't ever fix him. She is only enabling him. I'm just saying this - - to all women out there, don't sacrifice your life for a sad hopeless cause. Get space and years between you - and only then - will it be safe to feel that compassion for him again. For now - turn it off. It's your turn. What about you.

Everything was better in the 90s, we reached the pinnacle......then starting from 2006-2008 circa, the world started to go downhill year after year ...
DiCaprio got an Oscar nomination that year... but not for this movie. Dude was insanely talented even at age 19.
This film is exactly why De Niro told Scorsese about him afterwards and that’s why he’s now Scorsese’s second biggest collaborator
i'd argue he was better when he was young, especially when his voice was still going through puberty - he had a lot of crackling and squeaking to play around with. once his voice settled, he's still a good actor, but it limited his vocal range
Wow he looked really young for 19
Until The Revenant which he finally won the Oscar.
He was 18
Imagine if joe Pesci played the father🤣🤣💀💀
In that case it would be “what do you mean I’m not funny?”
You hear a little girl, Frankie? Is that a little f**kin’ girl? 🤣
Imagine if Bane played the father and said "do you feel in charge?"
"u better do your homework kid or imma come into your room bust your head open then come back again after u come outta your coma and bust it open AGAIN... understand"
"I've known your fucking mother 35 years, you think I'm gonna fucking divorce her for you??"
Been there with the step dad. He’s dead 20 years but he still haunts and demolishes me in my dreams. I’m 40 next year. He was a violent, jealous, petty, broken, bully and martyr.
I’m a recovering heroin and crack addict and I have slip ups now and then. I wake up in cold sweat when I dream he’s coming through the attic trap door (my room
Was in the attic for most my childhood) Roaring my name in fury like the Hulk...and I’m trying to use my weight to stop him. The door is lifting and banging up and I’m pushing down so hard. He did give me my two sisters with my mother but he was a violent, psychotic bully and i fear , hate, love and despise him all at once.
No beating he ever gave did as much damage as the one he did to my mind and consequently my soul
Try EMDR…you don’t have to live in that fear. 🫂 Give it back to him…
Wow thank you so much for sharing. I had never heard of this before and it seems fascinating and very helpful. I appreciate your reply ✌️🙂
And now they played in Killer of the Flower Moon together.

I really love the dynamic between Toby and Pearl as they grow older. They clearly come to see one another as true siblings, and really care about each other.

I'm not a fan of abusive entities raising children. I will not call them parents, because PARENTS are souls who treat their children with respect from day one. Too many souls out there who should NEVER be allowed to raise children.
Leonard Di Caprio’s acting is brilliant in this.
My father is like this. He loved my brother and i but he didn’t know how to love. He treated us like this and drove us away. Finally, haven’t spoken to my dad in months. Hope he’s well but idk if will ever speak to him again

@@thaistomp narcissists tend to look that way.
I went through 6 years of this. My Mom’s boyfriend, the older I got, the worse he acted. Me and my two sisters could NEVER do anything right. And you couldn’t question anything he said or did. It was always,” Quit acting like you grown!l Or ,”Shut up, you don’t know anything!” Or, “ you think you are smarter than me?” No, just read different books about different things. He ended up going to prison and we moved far away. Took years, to learn, finally, about Narcissistic personality Disorder and lots of study on self-esteem, to realize these people are wounded. They almost need sympathy, but from a big distance! I used to hate my Mom’s boyfriend, but after meeting his family, I realized he never had a chance. But, It wasn’t my fault or problem! Bye-Bye!

Was your mom aware that this was happening?
Not having a chance doesn’t excuse his actions. The way he treated you and your mom was wrong and he must be held responsible for it.

He would've won... if he didn't get the broom hit out of his hands.
but he is not big enough to fight with De niro . With a dad like him we ain't needs enemies...
Fun fact: DeNiro was so impressed with Leo’s performance that he later down the road recommended him to Martin Scorsese.
That story hit me in the heart❤
If you went through this, I'm glad you survived. I'm glad you're still here. Purpose.
Yes! Those people who are bullying knows their life worth shit
Don’t waste mustard.
I couldn't imagine doing this to my son. I straighten him out when I need to but my boy is my life. Much less a step child. It's just bullying.
This is what brought Leonardo DiCaprio to Martin Scorsese's attention, as De Niro praised him to Scorsese and told him that he was good. Scorsese has said that it was unusual for De Niro to praise a fellow actor...
Now that, my friends, is what you call God level acting.

This scene makes me cry
Makes me feel scared
I feel bad for Robert De Niro's character in this movie. He reminded me a lot of my dad and on surface level it is easy to hate him. But there is always a lot more to things like this. At the time, it was easy to hate him, but now that I am older and look back and have a bit more knowledge about my dad and his past and have a better understanding of everything, I felt really sorry for him. There are things about his life which I still won't know or understand, but from what I do know and understand now, I have a lot of sympathy for him.
I admire your perspective, Jeffrey.

The step son was out of control long before he got to that household. The movie shows him doing horrible things and was he was constantly in trouble. It was even mentioned in the movie that he had to move because of his trouble with the law.

The most adorable thing about it is that Dwight is that kind of people whose lives ain't worth a shit and, the moment they leave this world, those who knew them will celebrate they're gone for good.
