Just a little backstory: Pokemon was always conceived as a video game. The card game and anime (and everything else) were spin-offs of the game, which came out first :)

Yeah. I think if Disney tried to sell a new Spectrobes game to more mature audiences that remember the older games as part of their childhood they might just strike some gold. They do seem to like playing on people's nostalgia, given all the live action film remakes.
Hell, at this point I'd gladly take a remake of the older games, to try and make what the originals lacked better. Until that day, I ought to track down a copy of Origins...

I feel like you downplayed the improvements the series made in the second and third game. The gameplay was improved a lot and the story also got more fleshed out. Krux and the High Krawl made for more interesting villains than the various non-speaking big blobs of goo in the first game. The games are definitely flawed, but this video makes them seem a lot worse than they actually are. I really hope Disney gives this series another shot at some point. I love the setting and I feel like there is still a lot of potential.

@ThePOKOkitty It's still Bakugan. The relaunch has made it impossible to find the toys and it's like 2008/2009 all over again. My only complaint is that the episodes are half the length of the original and it's having similar plot pacing issues that plagued Steven Universe and Adventure Time due to limited time. I still have a 3 of the old ones from the Gundalian Invaders series: Ventus Quake Drago, Ventus Lumagrowl, and a Haos one who's name I can't remember but it uses dice to calculate damage.

@@g3ek178 The mechanic that's notable for the purpose of this conversation is that in Astral Chain, you control both the human character and a monster called a Legion at the same time, and you can switch between 5 different Legions on the fly. Each Legion has a different playstyle and exclusive skills. Combat is very combo-heavy and requires you to be mindful of the positioning of both characters.

The monster designs in Spectrobes look interesting, but they’re not exactly kid-friendly. For a game that wanted to stay as basic and bare-bones with its mechanics because of the children, then choosing to not go the whole nine yards with it sounds like a mistake.
How are the designs not kid friendly? Just show a picture of Pikachu and of that blue bird, then ask them to draw the two from memory. Chances are, they’ll draw Pikachu easily and struggle with the bird, making Pikachu the most satisfying and easier to replicate subsequently.

    • @Potassiumkloride
      @Potassiumkloride 4 года назад +105

I agree. The designs seem to follow a similar visual style to Digimon, but the thing Digimon did right is that those designs aren't the normal state of the monsters. The base form you most often see Digimon in are a lot more simple, and often pet-like. They only turn into the big detailed monsters when it's time for a fight, like a special battle suit. It makes the designs a cool visual representation of the monsters powering up, with the monsters typically getting more complicated as they get stronger, and it all goes away at the end of the battle leaving you with the cute, appealing designs again.

Some of the most recognizable character designs are also the most simplistic. The slime from Dragon Quest, for example, is the famous mascot of Japan's favorite RPG series despite having no actual importance to the games, save for being among the first enemies encountered. It's design is just so stupidly simple, you can't possibly forget it, thus why it works as the face of the franchise.

    A few inaccuracies:
There were PvP battles in the original Spectrobes for the multiplayer; there weren't just Krawl fights. The multiplayer for Origins had one player control the MC and the other, the Spectrobe, which is unrelated to what you said but I felt like mentioning it anyway.
There also was a post-game for the original Spectrobes, though it wasn't very fleshed out, I'll admit. The player's goal basically became to collect as many of the Spectrobes as possible, as well as to collect all the Geos. The latter is achieved by partaking in what is akin to a challenge or endless mode, wherein your success is based on the number of waves you cleared. On top of that, you could spend time trying to get all the input cards IRL to get absolutely everything. Unfortunately, I can't say much about the post-game for the other two entries in the series, as I have yet to beat both, but I hear that they were both more developed than the first's.
Another thing is that I don't think you placed enough focus on Origins, which could be considered the best game in the series, depending on who you ask. It certainly has the best graphics and does try to tell a more coherent narrative. It also has quite an expansive world for the time so it's definitely worth checking out, even today, despite the motion controls of the Wii.
Regardless, it is wonderful to see Spectrobes getting some more attention. The franchise still has a small following and it would be amazing if a rise in attention led to a new entry, however unlikely that may be. Thank you for sharing its existence.

Joshua Ward the post game for beyond the portals (the second game) was pretty much the same as the first game but a few spectrobs were only available after you beat the game and every geo was in the same hundred battle pit that you would have to keep fighting again to get them all, there was also the custom parts that changed stats to collect and the minerals for the ship part.

Dude, I hated Origins. The graphics were beautiful, not gonna lie, but the gameplay and story were... ick to me. And Neal. Neal can just stay in his pits. The lack of healing items be it thru shop or otherwise, especially for the spectrobes, made the marathon battles in Slayso and the krawl sphere on "New game plus mode" almost impossible. Difficulty was also super slanted. In Beyond the Portals, I didn't have a huge problem until Gronos, and that was with me being a dumb-dumb and wanting to avoid every fight so my babies didn't get hurt as an 8 year old kid. Origins, I fought every little battle and still could barely beat the 3rd boss. Still hate that three headed Dutch bag... the digging was also a huge pain, but I think that's more due to my preference to handhelds over consoles.
On the other hand, all the designs were AMAZING. I had 0 issues with a single spectrobe design wise. The world's were gorgeous, and I really enjoyed the mineral system they added, and the exchange fossil options. It wasn't a bad game, but they probably should have kept to handheld imo. When you change a game that drastically, it doesn't always turn out well. Look at Fossil Fighters. It followed the almost exact same pattern as Spectobes. A decent, but meh first game, a sequel better than the first that improved on ALL the flaws the first one had, and a third game that drastically changed everything and effectively killed the franchise.

I think if Disney Interactive licensed a good Dev team to develop a new title for the switch or even PC it would be a great thing. If they took a few notes from a whole host of different games I could see it becoming a complete success.

For me, these select Spectrobes, out of all of them, were very interesting with how mysterious they were. Spectrobes with near god like abilities! They really could've gone more into that concept, atleast story wise... a shame really!
The series, both the games and the mini-episode animations they made, had alot of potential; but they couldn't get to that said potential at the rate they went. I do wish Spectrobes had a second chance in the spotlight with either a new game or, what they really need at this point, a reboot! And with times, consoles, and hardware changing... who knows?! Maybe that second chance is right around the corner. One can only hope at this rate...

Funny thing about Digimon is that it wasn't conceived as a monster collector, it was a virtual pet (Tamagotchi spin-off). The first Digimon World game also mostly plays in this virtual pet idea since you can only have one Digimon at a time before it died and you can try to get another one. Then anime came where there is no "collecting" at all, the Digimon are the kid's friends/partners and other than digivolving they don't get another. I thought it was unique and it's kind of a shame that the newer games & anime series actually go the pure monster collecting route.

@@gamekatt101 sorry to inform you... But it was TRASH compared to the original PlayStation version because the monsters stones were decoded by putting random discs in your PlayStation xD . All the codes used on other systems you could find in game magazines, especially rare monsters with way op stats could only be found by inserting a physical disc in a PlayStation to get the code to generate multiples. There were monsters that the only way to ever generate the first one to get the code to give to someone else was with a specific unique disc no other method or disc could ever generate with rng. No PlayStation version = no cheat sheets of codes. Searching for discs i hadn't tried yet was a huge part of the games fun you missed out on if you played on another system. 3 of the rarest dinos and what cd's they were encoded on were "gallop" on Patti smith's 'wild horses', "geisha" on Bjork's 'homogenic', and "smiley" from 'the forest Gump soundtrack'... You forget that Pokemon, as well as practically all Nintendo Franchises have a cult following.
And MANY Fanboys and girls behind it.
That is a huge protection against potential sales loss, as a fancult is known for buying your product blindly.
Pokemon doesn't even need to be a better game.
(And it shows, since their newest entry the franchise hardly ever did something new or unconventional)
Its just that they have such a big marketing campaign and additional merchandise.
    They're pretty much secured.
Spectrobes wanted to survive in a monopolized market.
Thats the other 40% for why it died..
