Great channel. One recommendation is to find a big parking lot and spend a day learning your rig...truck and trailer. We love our F-150 and Airstream 26 but learning how they work as one takes time. I’ve towed a lot but learning how to read our surroundings (curbs, gas pumps, over hangs, construction zones, barriers, and of course hookups) took a complete rethink of what I thought I knew. I went to a big lot, used some simple little cones, and learned how to pull into and out of a typical site...and there is really no typical site, so I kept changing the cones once I got comfortable. Practice makes better but never perfect! We did the same thing with our new hoses so be learned how to read how close to be to water and sewer. I then practiced with my wife as becoming a team takes practice too and rule #1 became we talk through EVERYTHING - even just getting gas - that we can before we get to it (if possible). Listen to each other in love and compassion and you will hopefully learn one of the greatest aspects of having an RV is simply doing all the little things together. Remember to avoid anger, curbs, and potholes!
Oh my, the 'avoiding anger, curbs and potholes' is all spot on! It definitely takes practice. Thanks for sharing this info with us. I'm going to have to purchase some small cones so we can practice in a large parking lot. Lauren is keen to learn how to back up, and this would be the perfect way to do it. We're doing well so far with the teamwork, but, as you said, talking through everything is the key. Thank you so much for following our adventures. When you see an upcoming episode of us in a parking lot with cones, you'll know it was your idea! - Daniel
I heard a tip from a van life lady: get a membership to 24 hour fitness. They are all over the US. You can workout (obvi), but also enjoy a warm shower & whatever other amenities they have!
I would like to add a couple. 1. don't leave the black tank open. You will get a poop pyramid. Only open to dump. 2. Dry shampoo is a girls friend and leave-in crème rinse cuts down on water usage. Your tips on steering wheel hand placement is spot on. Thanks for sharing.
TexasRoadrunners - Agreed 💯. We leave our grey tank open if we're on hookups, but never our black tank. And, poop pyramid sounds like a not-so-fun story goes with that. 🤣 Care to share? Oh, and amen on dry shampoo. I've been living off this stuff. I haven't tried a creme rinse though. Gonna have to give that a whirl! Thanks for these tips. 💪
I was thinking that if you keep your shoes that you wear in the house by the door, and your outdoor shoes, then when you come in, at the door, take your outdoors off, and place them on some kind of rubber mat, and switch to your indoor shoes so that you don't track the outside in. Having floors would be so much better because you can sweep them much easier. Or wipe up messes much easier than on a carpet, which can eaisly get stained. Have a rubber mat at the door, (like the ones in your vehichle) would be good too. My tip. My favorite Airstream is the 30 foot Classic. And I love the white and light gray color scheme, it just makes it seem more brighter than the browns, and the darker wood.
Great video and we're sure it will be helpful to new owners. You hit it on the nail! Two things: First, we cannot wait for the video on how to best upload RUclips content. I love your videos. I always look forward to them. A couple of things to consider. 1. Wheel chalk's. We definitely want to make sure there is no rolling. 2. Would be the shower. The quality of the shower really depends on your rig. We have a class A diesel pusher. We have Aquia Hot on demand for our hot water. It can run off of electric or diesel. In the winter you definitly want to run off the diesel. As long as we are at a campground with full hookups and our gray water tank open you can have scalding hot water for as long as you want. It is so hot I can't hold my hand under it on full hot. It has to be toned down. One day I was feeling tired and sore. I took a 25 minute shower. I never do that. As soon as I was done my wife took a 45 minute shower. That's why I say open the gray tank in advance on those days.
Thank you so much for the comment, Adrian! We have lots of crazy and silly adventures ahead, so be on the lookout. Great tip on the wheel chock's. Our first night, we had nothing and it was terrifying! Let's just say, we didn't get much sleep that night. We've since added full ribber chock's and x-chocks to the equation. So, true story, we went TWO months or more without learning how to operate our heating system. After MANY cold showers, someone in an RV group was nice enough to walk us through it on the phone. He's our angel! We can now take long hot showers without a problem. Don't you just love this community of RV'ers? Everyone we've met is always so kind and willing to help out. As crazy as this feels to us towing, we can't imaging a Class A. They look intimidating! How long have you been RV'ing?
@@Wanderlocal We have been RVing for three years now although last year we only went out twice. When we first picked up our RV we didn't know how to operate the heat. We turned the thermostat to Furnace like they said to do and it wouldn't come on. We froze one night then bought a space heater. It took a mobile RV repairman to show us the one part we were missing. Now we are toasty warm. We picked our RV up on a Friday. The last thing they did was install the tow kit so we could tow our car. They switched the wiring and had to redo the wiring. When the RV was signaling to turn right the car was signaling to go left. Lol!!! 🤣🤣 By the time they finished and we left it was 4:30 pm. So it was 4:30 on a rainy Friday in Tampa Florida during rush hour traffic. I can honestly tell you that scenario scared the daylights out of me. We spent our first night out in a Cracker Barrel parking lot in Brunswick Georgia.
Oh my goodness! That's too funny about the furnace. I'm sure they told us how. to turn ours on when we first picked it up, but it took us weeks (some of which Daniel froze in the cold in Chicago) before we really got the thing to work. What do you do? RV newbie mistakes, right? 🤷♀️ Congratulations on picking up your new rig! But, that's crazy about the wrong wiring. That could have been disastrous. Good job on doing your light checks! That would have been easy to miss. And, yeah. We started our adventure very similarly in Tampa traffic, so know exactly how you felt. We were terrified, but we did get to stay at Disney for our first night, so you take the rv life skills award for spending your first night in a Cracker Barrel! 🤣We haven't been brave enough to do this yet, although we've talked about boondocking at Buc-ees since we're in Texas this month. 🤣
@@Wanderlocal We have never been to Disney or Buc-ees. I would love to see both places. Everyone tells us we need to stay at Fort Wilderness. Especially during Christmas.
Great tip and we use walking talkies too! Learning your rig is so important before boondocking, emptying the tanks isn't that bad and dirt & sand will get in the RV. Love it! Thanks for watching our video. We may be new to camping, but we now totally understand why it's a life long passion for so many. Once a camper, always a camper. ⛺️💙
I've learned, in van-life, that, hotter (than home) water is possible, if, you're willing, to safely use; an immersion water-heater, in a container, like, a 2-gallon pump-sprayer, or, bucket, to heat the water, and, it's up to you; how you get that water onto your body; you can use the pump-sprayer, a rechargeable, battery-operated pump, that, comes with a larger shower-head (using more water, faster), or, you can dip your washcloth into the water-container, and, after scrubbing your body; rinsing into your greywater collector.
That's a solid way to get hot water! Great info. We just picked up our new rig (2021 now), so we'll have to see if the hot water situation is the same. If so, we'll have to go with your idea - because I'm a Florida boy and cold showers are NOT my thing! 😂 - Daniel
