It is indeed rare that someone can take a topic as vast and complex as ACT and do a decent job of explaining it in under 15 minutes, without minimizing it to the point of effectively saying "ACT makes you feel better". So, this is a rare video indeed. Very Well Done!
ACT is the one thing that has been able to help me with CPTSD and flashbacks. I became very dissociative and it doesn't help to say 'well I shouldn't feel this way / experience this.' ACT has saved me countless times from myself but I'm still learning to integrate it into my toolbox.
This made me really miss my psychiatrist. I moved and can't afford therapy anymore, but I use this technique that my psychiatrist taught me almost every day of my life. The bus metaphor changed my life.
You wouldn’t believe this Matthew but I actually begin almost all of my workshops by saying: I guarantee you, you’re already doing a lot of what we’re going to be talking about in this workshop. I am responding to the comments/ reply of Ms. Kristie in the comment section of this video. Mental health is comparatively foremost than any physical injury. We can fight with physical injuries by good mental health but not vice versa. The poor mental health and psychological inflexibilities kill your living instinct, hinder your personal and professional health and mars your overall personality. I have been struggling to fight out a sort of personality disorder or say sense of idealism in my daily routine life which in the practical world is near impossible. Then how to live with the values if those are real and practically correct . Perhaps ACT may not deal with the worries about the present moment real problems. In any case the video in question by Mr Gordon is extremely helpful for people facing issues of psychological inflexibilities like me. Let's hope for the best . I am willing to share my views on this monster thing ,if the similarly placed persons want so with sincerity , understanding and requisite privacy.Good luck.

What's really cool about act is that it seems like it's something that you can teach yourself over time. I am currently working towards taking my BCBA exam after a Masters in Behaviour Analysis and many years previously working with trauma, and I have become super interested in ACT! Both for my own well-being and would love to study this in depth and become qualified to use to with clients. I found your video and passion so helpful and accessible which is greatly appreciated, and also love seeing part of behaviourism (RFT) being researched and applied with mental health and private events! It's a well constructed video for dealing with the complex and variety of mental health issues in a concise and summarized way. This summarized video clip of ACT will help in meaningful reading of the big volumes of the books on ACT by linking the preceding textual explanation with the subsequent / following textual explanation , Otherwise it will become very difficult for an ordinary person to comprehend the concept of ACT. Would like to have more such enlightening videos. Thanks

@@elainepeltier2015 Yes I have a book from Eckhart Tolle. In the acceptance kind of way it has similarities but Eckhart Tolle has a lot of spiritual beliefs that ACT does not have.
Elaine Peltier for SOME people the spiritual material that Eckhart Tolle focuses on can be incredibly helpful. For me, spirituality made a lot of sense to me during a time that I was confused and hurt; later, science occurred to me as being a relevant focus to better understand my hurt. I still however feel that tug toward meaning making through prayer, chanting, and scripture. Spirituality is a different way of knowing and might be a useful method to transmit these ACT core processes. 🙏🏼

Awesome video, thank you..I am returning to direct clinical practice with youth after many years as a supervisor. I'm looking for some solid frameworks to use and this is spot-on. might I request a specific video on how to use ACT with children and youth? Much appreciated., GC
Thanks so much for the positive feedback and YES! I’m happy to do a video on using ACT with children and adolescents, it’s a great model. I also have a book called The Acceptance & Mindfulness Toolbox for Children & Adolescents coming out soon. Keep an eye out for that!! :)
Great explanation. I would also not agree that ACTS has not been influenced by Buddhism, as acceptance is a psychospiritual perspective dynamic. Noticing thoughts, releasing them, affirming you are not your thoughts...while ACT does tie behavior into a network of relational complexity that only adds more dimension to mindfulness and resilience.
Thank you Jose, please note I did not say influenced by: I said that ACT is not based on. All too often I hear folks, including people educated in my field saying that ACT was based on or developed to be an empirically supported Buddhist therapy, etc. No, that is not whatsoever true.
Relational networks, socially constructed, etc, all that sounds a lot like Buddhism's this-that conditionality, mental fabrications, and interdependent co-arising packaged in modern, psychology jargon. You didn't say a single thing that I didn't already know from Buddhist mindfulness practice. Good job presenting it to non-Buddhists in a non-Buddhist language though. Keep it up.
I wonder if ACT works for when you can't sleep at night when something important is coming up the next day. For example a plane flight, or a first date. I find my mind racing at night sometimes, and then I'm so worried what the affects of no sleep with be the next day or having to cancel plans that make me look bad.
That was great. Also fantastic to see a little NLP'ish presentation of ACT materials, which can be helpful in an indirect, direct way. ACT really is a brilliant approach and perfect for coaching.
Why ACT is right Behavior analysis is a pragmatic discipline, and is persuasive because of the efficacy of its procedures, not its explanations. Nonetheless, an explanation of how affective states ‘work’ can demonstrate that ‘Acceptance and Commitment’ is not only a byword for a set of psychotherapeutic procedures, but demonstrably also for a very simple procedure for mental hygiene, or the control of positive affect. This provides not only a new procedure for emotional control, but a validation of ACT as the most efficacious way for self-control. To wit, ‘acceptance’, as reflected in mindfulness procedure, induces relaxation, which is marked by a feeling of pleasure as reflected by opioid release. ‘Commitment’, as reflected by the continuous pursuit and apprehension of positive values, produces a feeling of attentive arousal that is reflected by the release of the neuromodulator dopamine. Dopamine and opioid neurons are adjacent to each other in the midbrain, and when simultaneously activated stimulate each other, or are synergistic. This results in a heightened feeling of pleasure and arousal or joy, and reinforces a commitment to a meaningful lifestyle. This can be easily demonstrated procedurally, not to mention providing an easy way of falsifying my argument. A more formal explanation of this procedure from affective neuroscience is provided on pp. 44-52 in a little open-source book on the psychology of rest linked below. www.scribd.com/doc/284056765/The-Book-of-Rest-The-Odd-Psychology-of-Doing-Nothing

Thanks for the great information and breakdown of this technique. Working on my MSW right now and planning on using this one with my clients.
Thanks for the positive feedback!! Good for you, doing an MSW - that’s awesome. 👍🏼
Thanks
Hi Timothy,
A really good and insightful Video thank you for producing.
A lot of takeaways from this: 'psychological flexibility, acceptance, commitment etc. Great job!
Best wishes,
Alex.

Any suggestions for future videos that you’d like to see?
Ive come here the morning of my second tele-session, I have no idea where the sessions will go. I left the first session feeling like I have a bit of a headache from thinking a lot lol Is that like everyone? I love it that you didnt sing the lamb chop song because it really goes on and on all day for me ha ha ha Thanks for explaining it more for me. I learned psychology 20yrs ago so therapy is not all a new concept to me.
Keep doing what you are doing. I've just been looking at audiobooks on CBT and come accross the abbreviation ACT which i'm unfamiliar with so decided to look it up and came accross you! Your explanation .... Clear, concise and I get it. Count me as another subscriber. Thanks

thank you about this speech . its very good and comprehensive
Very well explained! Thank you!
Thank you kindly for saying so. 💛
thank you so much for this explanation of ACT it has helped me so much.
Another great video. This is a super-helpful and functional ( ;-) ) summary of ACT, and you clearly explain it. Open - Aware - Engaged with me, rather than my thoughts, feelings, memories, sensations & urges, in the driving seat and in control. Thanks, Tim.
Thank you Darren for checking out the video and leaving such a kind comment. It means a lot to me personally. 🙏🏼
Knock-out video, TG! Splendid job of explaining ACT, which I am familiar with, and introducing me to relational frame theory, which I didn't know anything about. Or maybe I did - I just didn't have a name for it. I really like the way you deEastify (demystify)
Thank you so much Dan! Your comment has put a big smile on my face. :)
I plan on doing some fun follow-up videos on relational frame theory soon for sure.
I love ACT ,this therapy form has helped me the most
Julia Did you ever try reading or watching Eckhart Tolle? I know he talks a lot about acceptance and I am wondering if ACT is similar?
@@elainepeltier2015 Yes I have a book from Eckhart Tolle. In the acceptance kind of way it has similarities but Eckhart Tolle has a lot of spiritual beliefs that ACT does not have.
Julia Thanks!
Timothy Gordon Thanks very much. I find I like the spirituality associated with Eckhart Tolle.
what a joy to land on this video today! great !
Thank you for saying. 🙏🏼
You are doing a great job and thank you SO much for explaining ACT the way I needed to hear it!!! I finally got what’s all about!!!
"Psychological flexibility as a measure of health" is a gem to take in and digest.

Hi Timothy Gordon. Really informative and and well presented video. Is ACT for chronic pain management video something you could do?
Thanks!
Thank you! Very helpful! Your examples of RFT are engrained in this brain :)
I’m so glad this worked for you!!
Well explained! Thank you!

Thanks so much Kate for the positive feedback!
Thank you very much would love to learn more about how to implement this in my life 🙏🏼
Awesome video, thank you..I am returning to direct clinical practice with youth after many years as a supervisor.
Keep it up.
This is incredible thanks for sharing
Thanks a lot for saying so!!
I wonder if ACT works for when you can't sleep at night when something important is coming up the next day. For example a plane flight, or a first date. I find my mind racing at night sometimes, and then I'm so worried what the affects of no sleep with be the next day or having to cancel plans that make me look bad.
Yes Sean! Check out the application Breethe. There’s an entire host of ACT for sleeping talks, exercises, meditations.
Great explanation of ACT
Thanks Wendy! Let me know if you have ideas for other videos or topics you’d like to see me cover.
Open Aware Engaged
I like it!
That was great. Also fantastic to see a little NLP'ish presentation of ACT materials, which can be helpful in an indirect, direct way. ACT really is a brilliant approach and perfect for coaching.
Why ACT is right
Behavior analysis is a pragmatic discipline, and is persuasive because of the efficacy of its procedures, not its explanations.
