I was never a big fan of U2 but when my iphone injected the songs of innocence album into my list, I instantly loved them

This live version is much better than the original. Full of feeling. I discovered this song while I was taking a shower at work and a collegue was listening to this. But the studio version. I listened to it for days straight! I come here every now and then to listen to it and sing aloud!

I wasn't sold on this song on the album, though I could sense the live potential. Having now heard it, all I can say is WOW - playing like boys again and that breakdown is something else - true rock. Larry is massively underrated in the rock pantheon

Right on the money - it's totally in fitting with the theme of the album: "innocence" is as much a reference tot he subject matter as it is to the form.
Splodge Furrer That is true of most of their albums over the last 20 years or so. For example, 'Wake up Dead Man' was a concept floating around during Achtung Baby , but did not appear on 'Pop', until 1997. Incidentally, a very different musical version of this concept was released as 'She's gonna blow your house down' on the AB reissue. The 'Wake up dead man' lyrics with this music, can be heard on the AB Outakes bootleg of this version. In summary, they are not rehashers, as you seem to infer, but have a backlog of ideas which fit their style, but which they refine for release. It's just the way they make their music. I, for one, am glad it took 3 years for this album, as the refinement in the music, shows in the end product.

Splodge Furrer While I can appreciate your perspective, I think that if you stick hard to this concept of 'new', then you will always be disappointed. The Pentium chip was used in the 60's during the Vietnam War in ICBM's but did not see wide scale industrial use in home PC's until the early 90's. Ditto, lithium batteries and halogen globes. My point is simply that they didn't write the song the day before release, but so what? The fact that recently produced it is the point. They have been using the I-V-vi-IV chord progression for a while now (With or Without You, being a prime example - and in fact, Beautiful Day is just a rework of this progression cf. same chords, different order). I agree that they have struggled in recent years and Jimmy Iovine summed it up when he said to Bono "You are long way from where you need to be to make the music you want' SOI is an attempt to get back to this place. It may not be great. It may not be entirely new either, but we've never heard it before and it is all we've got.

Splodge Furrer Respectively, that is just sophistry. They are 'new' songs. If we were to take your definition, then only the last melody that came in their head could be new. What is the timeframe on it? 3 months? 6 weeks? 8 days? Further, If your assertion is true re: RBW, then it is all the more apropos the title of the album. It gives it more weight that it is from a time in their life when they were, in Bono's words, 'naive'

Loving this song. Totally giving me a flash back to Zoo TV, sounds like a combination of Zoo Station and The Fly. That bass line O.o Who says U2 isn't a rock band, this song rocks. As a wise ol' piano man once said "it's all rock and roll to me".

I mean.. Jools' show got everything perfect there.. the lighting, ambiance, everything, and U2 just gave a sublime performance of a new song nearly 40 years after they started. Not the new raw edge (no pun intended) they had then, but more mature but rocking music I associate with them. Whether they can ever achieve the brilliance of my all time neck hair curling miracle that was "One", I'll be surprised, but who knows with these guys... they always said they will stop when it doesn't work any more..and still they go on making stuff like this.. please keep going boys!!!

For all you lousy non believers of U2 this live act just shows you that they can clearly play their instruments well and write their own material. On the same note after three decades they still have the energy and passion to always invent themselves with innovatation. As for the Itunes story well, U2 have always supported Apple products during steve jobs time.
