think of the guys it saved in the long run. for 1 it got rid of that black ass burning fuel and the amount so you could see what to dodge. also it brought in the racesafe fuel bladder. bad year. also fireball roberts killed. jim hurtubise burned a wk later at millwaukee.

This style of racing is so crazy....none of the suspension and safety equipment of today, and the cars were really difficult to drive and keep on the track. Amazing how far we have come, but nothing but respect for the drivers of the 60's and 70's.
Aluminized asbestos was used for Top Fuel and Funny Car driver's suits, any one driving something using Nitro Methane fuel. By about 1967, every one else was already using suits made of Nomex, a synthetic aramid fibre with no more health risk than say nylon. Now we have Nomex, and Kevlar, or something called PBI. Before that suits were cotton, treated with Proban or borax. The goal for current suits is to resist fire for 45 seconds. If you want to see how good modern suits are search "Roman Grosjean crash Bahrain, 2020."

Nope. Thats Jack Turner in his last race in 1963. He suffered burns and a crushed vertebre. Then he retired. This is the third year in a row he suffered a horrible looking crash, the car flipping at end of multicar wreck in 62’ is also Mr. Turner. I strongly recommend you look this man up and see all 3 wrecks he survived. Just a miracle

5:40 I was at this race and am sitting in the first turn where the camera was. I believe David Person won this so this would've been 1976, the year him and Petty had the greatest finish in NASCAR history at the Daytona 500. Great times with Person and The Wood Brothers kicking butt in that #21 Purolator Mercury. Edit: after viewing this again. I believe this is 1972 and that is A.J. Foyt driving the Wood Bros. Merc.
At 10:15, watch the start of the 1971 Indy 500. Mark Donohue writes about it in The Unfair Advantage. Mark (blue McLaren) and Bobby Unser in the white/blue car slowed up to let Revson get too far out in front. Then on the main straight, just as Revvie slows up, Mark and Bobby nail it and blow his doors off.
This is so CONTRIVED . For one thing no one driving at full speed would crash because of some silly wench in a bikini prancing about ! You can't take this video seriously , and it's bad taste if this is called " entertainment " .
Imagine sitting in a recording room, listening to clips of racing cars or film stunts.. to see if you can fit it into the footage. Man.. I hope that person got a decent pay, because that must've been hell
The suites were asbestos fabric at the time, common usage was with fire fighters and covered with a silver film to reflect the heat, but the silver film was not used in motorsports. Asbestos fabric was replaced that with Nomex underwear commonly found in majority of motorsports.
That Johnny Lightning car was IT. My first year seeing Indy on TV was when Al Unser won in that car (the first time, 1970). I also happened to have my own Johnny Lightning 500 set. I wonder whatever happened to it. It was a lot of fun. I thought it was bosser than Hot Wheels.
@@andyharman3022 Hot Wheels had the advantage that they had miniature models of real cars, while Johnny Lightning just had made up cartoon cars. But the Johnny Lightning set was much more impressive. Hot Wheels just had those orange plastic strips, but Johnny Lighting you had this monstrous big track.
As Steve Olvey said in his film/book. You had a favorite driver, and he died so you picked another and he died so you picked another. I had to do something.
It’s come a long way since. Haunting scenes, thankfully the cars and tracks now are so much safer. You wouldn’t get a modern driver into one of those old cars for all the money in the world. ..! Total respect.

I looked at quite a few of these accidents and God bless anyone who lost their lives racing cars for a living. Believe me I enjoy the need for speed but a lot of these vintage race cars had absolutely no protection for the drivers.

Dave McDonald and Eddie Sachs. McDonald is the one hitting the wall after which he shot back across the race track right into the path of Eddie Sachs. They were both killed instantly. RIP
@@plantfeeder6677 What's mind-boggling is that these days with all the vehicle and driver safety measures, you wouldn't ever expect to see a car explode like a bomb instantly upon impact with the wall like that. It's also one of those frightening moments where your life is about to end instantaneously and you don't realize it. Really shows how far motor sports have come in the years in terms of safety.

The Drivers were fearless... So were the marshals, photographers, mechanics etc.
These are the modern chariot racers of the circus maximus. Injury or death for the love of speed and the applause. Cant admire enough.
I would say at 1:08 that's a fatality. That's why it was "unseen" at the time. The more graphic, the more unlikely to be telecast.

Are there more episodes of Wheel to Wheel? This is the stuff I grew up with, outstanding.

Something must be said for the track marshals and safety crews that run TOWARD a car on fire - that takes true grit.
The fiery wreck early in the film killed Dave McDonald and Eddie Sachs at Indy in 1964. AJ Foyt won the race, his 2nd Indy 500 win out of 4.
