    Gotta say, as a Dodgers Fan, I'm not to interested in Soto for my team, I'm more interested in pitching and a quality short stop or 3rd baseman, I'm hoping we spend that Soto $ on 2 starting pitching and that Adomas Kid for short stop. Adomas and Sasaki is a huge Win! And much cheaper.

    • @jacobpelletier1243
      @jacobpelletier1243 6 дней назад +13

      I think a lot of us Dodgers fans are thinking the same way. Soto would of course be great in a vacuum because he is a generational talent. However, yeah it really does feel like that money could be better spent to build a core for the long haul. Also, imo, a one-way player with mediocre defense is not worth $600 million+, even with his offense being as amazing as it is.

    • @JumboJuneau

      I want the Dodgers trade for Arenado. I think they can get him cheap with St Louis taking care of some of his contract. The Dodgers have been asking p about him for years, so hopefully their front office takes that into consideration. I think Arenado still has a lot left and will be rejuvenated playing on the Dodgers.

    • @JumboJuneau

    From what I have garnered from the internet, Dodger fans don’t want Juan Soto because that means no Teo. Teo has expressed his love for the Dodgers and their fans. Was super emotional winning the WS and the fan base is responding with their hearts.
    This doesn’t really extend to Buehler/Kershaw and Sasaki because they are starting pitchers and everyone knows you can’t have too much starting pitching.
    Do agree with you that overall Mets vs Yankees, Mets has a better future because their payroll commitments is Lindor & Nimmo vs Yankees with Rodon & Stanton + Judge & Cole. With Cohen seemingly having truly unlimited money, the sky is the limit for them.
    Thanks a great listen. Keep up the great work.

      @ShotaMotegi 6 дней назад

      @@pinverarity
      Soto is going to sign a long contract and if Dodgers are ok with Teo on the field, Soto is about the same defensively. If in 3 years he is declining, he will still be under 30 and stick him at 1st after Freddie. There are ways to hide bad defensive players but his bat/OBP is elite. I understand why Dodger fans want Teo back, but I find the convo behind the decision of Teo>Soto is more based on emotions than skill set, and there is nothing wrong with that too. You go to ballpark to be entertained and have a connection with a player. Teo definitely has won LA’s heart.

    Listening to you guys talk about the “old” vs. the “new” (Cohen) Mets reminds me of what the Dodgers have been through recently, with the McCourt years bringing relatively poor results, followed by big spending (and better results) under the new ownership group. I think it’s great that you have all these teams out east really ratcheting up the competition. I’ve always liked the Mets, but seeing them put the pressure on the Phillies, Braves, and now Yankees, I really think MLB can reach new heights in the 2020s and 2030s. The runaway spending may present a problem for the league, at some point, but for now, I think you’re going to see young talent choosing to play baseball because of the potential payouts that these teams are offering. Having said that, I hope Soto ends up a Met.

There is a high representation of Japanese-Americans in the LA-metro area. L.A. has great Japanese food, TV channels, radio stations, and a large Japanese community, that other baseball cities don't have. The Dodgers have been scouting Sasaki since he was a teenager. Freedman has visited Japan numerous times to visit him. So saying Stearns going over and seeing him in September is not as big a deal as you may think. He’s going to be with the team for 6 yrs, so guaranteed to play with Otani and Yamamoto for that long is a huge advantage. Darvish will only be around for a couple more years, so SD is a long shot. Plus, he is only 23, so I imagine staying as close to the west coast for easier travel home is important for someone so young. And making huge endorsement deals to offset the minor league salary playing on Japan’s team makes decision pretty easy. Go Dodgers!

    Was amused by reading Jon Heyman's report that the Rays had 'checked in' on Juan Soto. After hearing that, I wanted to report that I too checked in on a multi-continent around the world excursion,🌍but found it just a little out of my price range.😑

    Dodger fan here, thanks for another fun episode
    I am also one of many who thinks Soto would be more harmful than beneficial to the team. I saw how he plays the game a lot when he was a Padre, and I gotta say, no thanks.
    I hope both the Dodgers and Mets end up with good off-season trades/signings 👍

    All 30 teams should be interested in Sasaki. Sasaki is essentially FREE, 6 years team control, and if he stumbles, can be sent to the minors to work it out.
    There is no "is this a good place to allocate our spending", or even the "he has to be in the Majors all year" that you get with Rule 5 picks.
    I could see a debate over if a team wants to do a 6-man rotation, but the Mets and Dodgers are already doing that for Senga and Ohtani.
    For me, Sasaki > Crochet because there are no prospects required and Crochet wants an extension. BUT.. if Sterns could convince the White Sox to take prospects that will flounder and be the next Alex Ramirez/Kevin Parada, I would love a rotation group that has Crochet-Senga-Sasaki-Sproat-Tidwell for around $20M total. Leaves plenty of flexibility to add 3 FA starters (1 of Burnes/Snell/Fried for 32M/yr, 1 of Manaea/Fleherty/Kikuchi for 23M, 1 of the Severino types for 17M).

    I definitely feel the same as you two and think Juan Soto just fits with the Mets. I know all of us Mets fans really want him and I’m pretty sure he’s friends with Lindor, Marte, and Alvy so there’s that. It’s nice knowing Steve Cohen, David Stearns, and the entire organization will give it their all this offseason. Anyways, love the podcast! 🫶

      sry but I want to bury my comment under finally a Met fan comment just to say, this whymetsfan podcast was my favorite this past season, but it is so disgusting that Dodgers fans are the main ppl supporting it now, at least according to comments. if this podcast does even a single episode that has absolutely nothing to do with the Mets just to appease all these "lovely ladies (btw calm tf down), let's go Dodgers!", it will be totally understandable to grow the podcast and audience, but it will be unwatchable and what a shame that it wasn't the Mets fans that did it.

    I really think Soto will sign with the Mets. It's not that we (Dodgers) don't want a great player. We have great players, we fight for great players BUT Soto just has something we know won't fit in the Dodgers clubhouse. He is a great player but not a good fit for the Dodgers!

  • @yomommasan292
    @yomommasan292 5 дней назад

    LAD fan here; I think there are two prevailing factors in why Dodger fans aren’t too hot on Soto:
    1. His defense is holding him back from being an outfielder for the entirety of his contract. He’ll most likely need to be a DH at some point, and the Dodgers already have a pretty decent DH.
    2. My fellow fans and I very much want to re-sign guys who just came off the books for LAD like Buehler and Teoscar first (Sasaki too but he won’t cost much).
    With that being said, Soto’s a generational offensive talent in the making and he’d make up for his defensive shortcomings by making the lineup one of the nastiest in baseball history. Being so, I would be happy for Mets fans if they picked him up. He fits into the Mets culture veeerrryyy easily IMO. He’s already proven he can play up to his potential in New York, and now he should do it for the more fun NY team.

    There is a sense among Dodgers fans that its either sign Teoscar LF or sign Soto RF. However Andrew Freidman is actually going after both. As a bonus Teoscar and Soto are actually good friends.

      It’s not EITHER. He’s going after Teo ONLY. Not Soto.

    As a LAD fan, I lived in Manhattan for 14 years (school + work). I hated the Yankees fans which are most of my friends at that time, so I rooted for the Mets. The Mets will always be my second team. In terms of Soto, no Dodgers fan would complain if he does sign, but most of us think the Dodgers could spend the Soto money to have a more well-rounded team: Adames, Teoscar, Treinen, either sign Snell/Fried or trade for Crochet, another elite bullpen piece, and Sasaki is last because his contract would have minimal impact.

    You guys won over another Dodgers fan. 🤘
    The guys I listen to for Dodgers news annoy me. 😝
    I don't want Soto. I'd rather re-sign Teoscar and keep some of that leftover cash for a guy like Kiké, who always seems to crush it in October. Some point to his subpar regular season numbers for why they wouldn't want that scenario played out, but I'll take postseason clutch over regular season funk every day of the week.
    Thanks for the platform you two! And I hope youse guys land Soto.

    Yeaah I was really hoping for you guys commenting on free agents. Cheers from Japan. PS. I think Padres got a shot because Marines and Padres have a long relationship businesswise. I remember when Hideki Irabu wanted to go to the MLB, more specifically to the Yankees they handed his rights to the Padres (probably just to piss him off) and all hell broke loose.

  • @Elephant2024

    There is a totally different feeling with Juan Soto in free agency than Aaron Judge. With Aaron Judge, he came up as a Yankee and being Yankee captain, as well as Yankee tradition meant a lot to him. With Juan Soto, he came up with the Nationals, then went to the Padres and Yankees via trade. As per his right as a free agent, he is a mercenary who most likely will go to the highest bidder, which in all probability will be the Mets.

    I've lived this fever dream before. It ended with our coveted, potential franchise altering player signing with the Evil Empire.
    Rumor has it the deal fell through because this Bora client wanted the Mets to provide his client with a private plane and a private locker so he wouldn't have to interact with the minions.
    At the end of the day we moved the Fonz to third to make room for an over the hill Roberto Alomar.

    I’m thinking Soto is the Mets to lose. As a former Padre who beat up on my Dodgers, I don’t see him “looking up” to the Dodgers. I also think he’s been on both coasts and prefers the east. But the biggest thing is the look on his face when the Dodgers were celebrating. It wasn’t a look that said “I envy you”, it was a look that said “that should be me, but my teammates ruined it”. To me that points to the Mets.

    Good point about Soto caring about ownership. The Cohen’s love this team and love the players and want them to feel like family. If the players are there for a short time or a long time, you’re a part of the Mets family it seems to the Cohen’s.

    I think Ohtani's contract broke baseball. His desire to win was evident in his contract deferments. Albeit that is off-field income supplements his salary. It created the environment to add pieces to the team while keeping a large budget line item on the roster. If Soto is really about winning, let's see if he defers a lot of his contract so it will allow Cohen the ability to keep adding solid players around him. Based on who his agent is and his interviews, I think not. I'd rather see the Mets take that money and get 2-3 solid players that will help them in the next 4-5 years. But I can see how enticing it is to have that "catch" in Soto out there for the taking.
    Also, as a Dodger fan of Japanese descent, thank you for pronouncing Sasaki's name correctly. A lot of RUclipsrs pronounce it with a z.... Sazaki. Great channel.

    As a Dodger fan, the Dodgers do not cocky players. This is why we would never sign Machado. The Dodgers are about team win. The players on the Dodgers doesn't leave their egos at the door. As dynamic and big personality, Soto might not be a good fit in the clubhouse.

    Love your passion and get that every team would love soto but the question is at what price. Mets are happy and able to pay overs but most teams need to balance and look at value. He gets 4/5 at bats and will improve defensively but will a single player at 5/6/700m reduce the teams chances to build a stronger line up in the next 5-10years so unless they have a strong roster probably not the best. Again Mets best placed financially and roster wise but that’s the case everywhere else even for other the big market teams.

    “One ass of a rat” 😂😂😂 from a Dodgers fan view they will try for Soto but the Dodgers brass don’t see eye to eye with Boras but Roli Sasaki will be a Dodger like Ashley said comfort level with fellow countrymen helps immensely the one thing I will disagree with you is that Dodgers upper management is still way ahead of the Mets and they have the hardware to back it it up Cohen is a great owner no doubt but the Dodgers have been signing the right big time players for awhile now Soto would make the Dodgers a living hell for opposing teams but the Dodgers need for starting pitching I think is going to be high priority that’s one to look at the ass of a rat! Lol can’t wait for the next episode Sam and Ashley 😁

    I'm a lifelong Dodgers fan and would love Soto but.. I think his salary would be too straining for the teams future. Unless he does a deferment like some of the contracts on the team, not as extreme as Shohei though, I don't think it's smart.
