North Tower World Trade Center Rooftop July 15, 2001- RARE VIDEO

  • This is a RAW UNEDITED video taken from the roof of the World Trade Center North Tower, Building #1, on July 15th 2001. Shown in the video is my friend Rod Coppola, a broadcast engineer for WNET Channel 13, who worked on the 110th floor and lost his life on 9/11/2001 in this very same building. The recording is jumpy and the RF interference from all the transmitters caused the video to breakup as well as causing the audio noise. The general public is not allowed on the North tower and most videos you will see are from the south tower, so this is a RARE video.
On Sept 11, 2001 at 8:30AM, I signed online with Rod using AOL IM discussing software changes to a program we were working on. Then at 8:46 the connection was severed. I had no idea what was going on until 15-20 minutes later when news of a "small plane" hitting the building was broadcast on the television I was watching. The rest is history. His body was found in a stairwell on Christmas Day 2001.

It is incomprehensible how Philippe Petit had the nerves to walk a tightrope between these two towers back in 1974.

After a certain height it all kinda fades out. You should see some of the people scaling skyscrapers in the 2020s right now with zero safety equipment. Meeting rescue workers on the roof but still.

I worked across the hall from Rod and WNET-TV in room 11021 and I knew Rod as a fellow Broadcast Engineer. We (TV and Radio Broadcasters) were like a family on the 110th floor. This video brought back many memories to me of working on the roof of WTC# 1. I worked on the 110th floor of WTC# 1 for Channel-5 for 21 years before 9-11.

@jay Leonard I used to have the same question. I actually had a theory that if there were people on top of the south tower while the first plane hit the north tower, they should have had a 15 minute head start before the 2nd plane hit to get to a lower floor. If this was the case, they would've survived and lived to tell people what they saw. However, that was before I found out that people weren't allowed up there at a certain time.

Recently I’ve become fascinated with how much of a technical achievement was made in the WTC as a broadcast beacon for probably the entire area, not just because it was a tall building but that it was so massive that only thing to compare would be it’s Twin a few feet away.
I’ve worked as a maintenance man before as well as a firefighter, so I’ve been on plenty of roofs, but this is so unreal. You’re just floating in the sky with a bunch of antennae. It must have been really unique since most of the tallest buildings are narrow at the top, not wide and expansive enough to walk about.

And I would find it even more weird/slightly scary to know that one has to be able to climb the mast. The largest radiotower in The Netherlands is the Gerbrandytower, measuring 366 meter high (that's 1200 feet). With a sense of anxiety and strange curiousity at the same time I always think about the fact that someone has to change the airtraffic beacons on top of that thing, just like there's a crows' nest at something like 325 meter. A Dutch TV-anchor one time went up the tower (there's an elevator inside that goes up to 325 meter or so, the rest has to be climbed manually) and got out at 325 meter and looked straight into the camera: 'Well, we're here.' To than take two firm jumps up and down upon the metal crate that made up the crows' nest. '325 meter up in the air'.
I mean, I don't have vertigo, but jumping up and down like that would make me get nervous too...
But that structure is tubular and runs straight down if you are at the very top, while this tower had a large rooftop below. I don't know why, but for some reason climbing that mast and than seeing the rooftop below would probably raise some fear...

The radiation at ground level is much less since EM radiation loses strenght logarithmically in the earth´s atmosphere, depending on humidity and line of sight etc...
But I agree with you, pulsed electromagnetic radiation (= digital) is much worse than the analog signals from the past and it is a horrific sight to see the cell phone repeaters in such close proximity to apartments or offices in cities. I´d never move to a city. Even here in the countryside there are at least 5 Wifi networks I can receive in my house. At least the next cell phone tower is 2 miles away... But using a cell phone is even more dangerous compared to the nearby towers. The towers have around 20W max RF in my country, but are at least several hundred feed away. Now your cell phone can transmit with up to 2W RF right next to your brain. With almost no distance for the RF to fall into the lower mW range... That is the biggest problem, talking for hours with your cell phone glued to your head.
At least everyone should use the speaker phone whenever possible...Blutooth ear plugs are almost as bad as the cell phone so don´t think they do you any good aside from handsfree operation.
And don´t keep your cell phone next to you while you sleep. The phone connects to a nearby base station a couple of times per minute to check which cell to use and compare signal strenght even when you don´t use them.

In a parallel universe, they have all of the asbestos taken out, the antenna was upgraded to accomodate UHD 4K broadcasting, and faster elevators. The Towers enjoyed a lot of tenants up until 2008 with the financial crash, and the Towers suffered some vacancy for a few years, and income from tourism declined a bit because money is tight. But in the mid 2010s, the Twins have started to recover financially.
Today, there's 4K videos of the Towers, 4K views from the observation deck, the elevators to the observation deck have a monitor installed similar to what's in the Freedom Tower in our world, showing the views and the Twin Towers in 4K quality. With modern smartphones, you no longer hear the humming of the North Tower antenna when up on the observation deck, you hear the wind blowing and footsteps. Speakers have been installed on the observation deck so that the muzak from the plaza can be played on the observation deck. The Twins are considered an 8th Wonder of the World, and have been featured in thousands of films and in video games. They are not in GTA III, but they are in GTA IV. The underground WTC Mall has seen vendors come and go, but it has survived dead mall phenomenon to this day.

I wonder how dangerous it was to be up there with all that radiation, especially with all that interference going through your camera. RIP Rod and everyone else lost on 9/11

I been to the 88th floor … but never ever on top of the North Tower. My legs were tingling too when the camera 🎥 got closer to the edge.

Incredible! This may be the only ever footage filmed from the rooftop of THE north tower.

Oh Jesus Christ, I assume the North Tower's rooftop's was off limits to the public? Other than that inner ditch, I don't see any safety railings and I'm getting all jumpy by how close this video was shot to the edge of the building.

I lost my girlfriend here in the North Tower. She worked on the 97th Floor. Still remember that fateful morning when I called her up at her office to check if she had taken my car keys mistakenly. My world ended an hour later.

I was in awe as a kid when I would see the trades from the landscape views from the boroughs. I remember seeing the crane arm on the top. I miss those buildings. Nyc hasn't been the same since. 😔

What is that ambient noise coming from the mic in certain angles? Are these guys being irradiated by the radio tower? I know it happens sometimes in the 90s Carrier Deck footage when standing behind the ICLS Radar dish...

    • @jtcomms_

Its the RF swamping the electronics of the camera. Long-term exposure to that RF is not recommended, as defined by ANSI and OSHA.

Sadly 2 months later those majestic buildings will be a part of history that no one wanted to a part of. Rest in peace to the nearly 3000 people who were murdered on September 11 2001

    • @kashmir1008
      @kashmir1008 5 лет назад +16

Well not "lethal" radiation. It's not like gamma rays or xrays. It's non ionizing radiation. Probably operating in the 10-50Ghz range at a half a watt. Not terribly intense but there are a lot of them and they are standing right in front of them.

    • @EclecticEssentric

It can make folk "see ghosts".
I had an mri done, when that machine went on, the magnetic field made me terrified and I wanted to crawl out.
The techs are trained to say "it's the noise"...it was not the noise. 23 minutes felt like 3 minutes of me trying not to crawl out of that thing.
No wonder folk have anxiety and autism with all the brain scrambling that we get.

It’s interesting to think how such a inconsequential video became significant because it’s providing a view that is impossible to replicate now. Makes you think about not taking the mundane for granted.

As the observation deck was located on the South Tower, many people recorded a video on it. However, I had never seen a video of the North Tower and was hoping to see one. That is why this footage is very unique.
