I lived in Vogelweh housing from 1983 - 1991. From June '83 to December '83 I lived in 1143 G (first stairwell, fourth floor, left side). From January '83 - August '91 I lived in 1107 G. We moved because they were going to renovate 1143 and they had just finished renovating 1107. I just went back to Vogelweh, Sembach, Ramstein, and Kapaun a couple of weeks ago (July, 2019) for the first time since December, 1991. My old building 1107 is gone and there are town houses now in its place. Across the street the big apartment buildings are there, but different versions of what was there before. The new apartments have rear balconies and additional bathroom / laundry spaces on the end of the buildings. There is a big new elementary school being built where all the woods were in the center of the loop that connected the first and fourth streets. The original Vogelweh Elementary and the expansion that was built when I was there are still there, but I suppose will no longer be used once the new school opens. Kaiserslautern Jr. High School is still in the same place and still being used, but they now call it Kaiserslautern Middle School. The original Kaiserslautern American High School is no longer used since they built a really nice new school where the Exchange, Commissary, Class VI, Food Court, etc. used to be. The fields between the old Exchange / Commissary and the old KAHS is now the new track and field / football / sports complex. The old gym and field area looks in really bad shape and abandoned. Likewise, the Vogelweh theater and Chapel look closed / abandoned. The bowling alley, Kazabra Club, Skating Rink, Library, and Recreation Center are all still there and operating, but it seemed like a ghost town when I was there (day and night on the weekend). Where the big baseball fields used to be by the Gym and sports fields are now the site for the new Vogelweh Commissary. Everything is gated now and you have to have ID or be sponsored to get onto Vogelweh. There is one way in and one way out of Vogelweh base housing now. On the Kapaun side, we had to enter through Pulaski Barracks a ways down B40. The Shoppette on Kapaun is closed. The post office, barber shop, and auto shipping and registration offices are still there. The post office has newer post boxes and they are sequenced differently. I found our old PSC 3 box in a different location. Sembach stopped flying in 1998 I believe, and in 2010 was turned over to the Army. Much of what used to be 'on base' like the flight line, hangers, air traffic tower are all outside of the guarded perimeter now and are either dilapidated or taken over by local commercial industry. On Sembach, the exchange and Tiger Palace movie theater are closed. The recreation center has been renovated and it was really nice. We watched the FIFA Women's World Cup final there. There were very few people around on the weekend. Ramstein seems to be where everything is centered these days. The exchange there is now huge and I was told is the largest in the world. There were a lot of people there and around the base, unlike Vogelweh and Sembach. I'm glad I went back and was able to check it all out again. It's kind of sad to see how much things have changed / diminished since the end of the Cold War and the force reductions, but I have a lot of good memories from growing up there. If you're on FB and you join the KAHS 2020 ALL CLASS REUNION group, you can see a lot of photos and a couple of videos I posted of Vogelweh, Kapaun, Ramstein, and Sembach.

I live near the base and it's great to see what it looked like from a LONG time ago! I love history and seeing how places change. Today everything is different. They ripped down those complexes like 2 times and build different versions. Roads are smaller and gates are in place.

I lived in KTown Vogelweh housing in 1976 and 1977. I would love to find the building and look at my apartment. And I would love to find the house where we lived in an attic flat for four months
