      +Sir Sebastian I loved when they featured the "when I was done dieing" music video where they had multiple animators work on different parts of the song. now its one of my favorite tracks. if there is one thing adult swim has always done right, its the music.

    I long for the nights of adolescent rebellion. when I'd pretend to be asleep until I couldn't hear any other noise in my apartment. and turn the tv on whilst simultaneously turning the volume down to near mute levels. and I'd digest this programming that I couldn't quite put my finger on, but I knew I liked it and I knew I wanted more. I started watching adult swim I wouldn't even tell anyone about it, it's like it was just for me.

    adult swim, for me, is the epitome of what television should be. when the conversation of tv being outdated thanks to things like netflix and hulu comes up, i generally agree, but that's only because no other channel does tv right. the way adult swim is run is something that can really only be done on tv and i think that's beautiful.

    I stumbled across [AS] accidentally back in 2001. Was it Friday or Saturday nights? I recall that it was a two or three hour block of cartoons, with NO commercial breaks, repeated again at least once into the early morning. With no commercials, they'd run three 20-minute episodes per hour. Usually a couple Home Movies episodes, then some SGC2C, then came the great stuff: ATHF, Sealab, Harvey Birdman... The shows, and moreso the way they were packaged at the time, provoked a feeling of surrealism and rhythm. Definitely a different vibe than what you get marathoning a single show, because you have to comprehend the change in style from program to program. And the interstitial cards made you feel like you were at low key get together, even if you were by yourself.
    I stopped watching with the advent of 12 Oz Mouse and Perfect Hair Forever(?). Took too much effort to understand, when I was looking for brain candy, plus the increased popularity meant the advent of commercial interruptions: good for [AS] but a killer of the almost meditative mood it would put me in. Not long after I all but stopped watching any broadcast or cable programming. This video makes me wish I had stuck around.

You can't make a video like this, without touching on how the repurposed art assets that became many shows on Adult Swim, such as the incredibly creative and oddly fucking hilarious Sealab, then became Drisky Dingo, then became a foundation solid enough to attract actors doing voice acting from fucking Arrested Development. I say well deserved since they’d rather keep giving 70 episodes to Reddit: The Animated Series. Why let anyone else make shows when you can just run syndication of Family Guy and King of the Hill, and cash in on being a meme with a show that’s long since jumped the shark.

    Watching mature and experimental shows on Adult Swim from 12-4am on the weekend is pretty much the same as my dad's generation watching Monty Python's Flying Circus when it aired 40 years ago (can't remember the channel but it aired late at night in our area). The experimental and absurd content was honestly better than watching late-night porn which was also an option - porn all looks the same after a while but the stuff on AS that came and went over the years was simply AWESOME because you didn't know what you were getting into. Adult Swim was great!

      In the video he describes how Adult Swim helped changed people's attitudes towards animation in general. They also changed people's opinion on Japanese animation with more mature shows like Cowboy Bebop. And now they have nothing but children's shows on the block on Adult Swim.
      It's a bit sad is all.

      Just be glad that you even have Toonami in the first place, Adult Swim here in Canada doesn't have Toonami which really sucks because I've heard they currently air the exclusively dubbed Hunter x Hunter series

      Children's anime?

    • @Ziko577
      @Ziko577 7 лет назад

      It's on here in the US. Hunter x Hunter is a great anime and a great deconstruction of the shonen genre. I just don't like the fact that the titles aren't diverse as they all are shonen anime and I'm kinda tired of that at my age. Granted, Gundam IBO is on but I'm watching season 2 online now and the first season is ending soon.

      Anyone remember Korgoth Of Barbaria? They never picked up the series because they felt it's budget would've been too high. But everyone could tell just from it's test pilot that it would've been one of the greatest Adult Swim shows ever produced. It's a shame that Adult Swim never took a chance with that one, it likely would've paid for itself in the ratings.
