Real quick, I want to address a couple of items I forgot to include in the video: At 2:17 on the extraction section, I forgot to mention that lots of PCs come with extraction software already installed, so this section is ONLY if your PC doesn’t already have extraction software built in. At 14:48 and 16:26 on the alternate DLC methods, with these, you DO NOT have to worry about renaming the original files in the HUNTDAT folder, since you’ll have the originals saved in the other HUNTDAT folders.
Oh my goodness, I needed this video! Yesterday I tried to download Carnivores+, and I didn't know how to do ANY of this stuff, and didn't extract the files properly, which led to some weird graphical issues. I also had no clue how to move the mod to my desktop. Thank you so much, I needed this guide!

Yet another great vid from Saurian. Got a question for ya: What video setting to use on a Carnivores mod when my computer has a GeForce GTX 1080? I tried Direct 3D like you have recommended, but the mod looked weird and flickery.
I've had the same problem. As it turns out (from what I've been told) D3D mode does that on some computers. I just ran the game in OpenGL and that fixed the whole problem. Hope that helps.

Is it possible to have 2 animals on the same AI? Like let’s say I’m using the DLC to far north and I want to have both the Platybelodon and Sivatherium at the same time, can I set whatever creature to whatever slot I want or do they HAVE to go where their AI number tells them to?
On older mods (like Far North), they have to go where their AI number tells them. Each AI is hardwired to a certain animation order, so if you put the Platybelodon on, say, Daeodon AI, its animations will be all messed up. However, the Modder’s Edition Engine fixes this by allowing you to reorder the animation set from within the RES file, so you can effectively put whatever creature you want on whichever AI. I put Spinosaurus on Allosaurus AI in my personal MEE copy and it works just fine.

Hello Saurian Target, I've been watching you for quite a while but I've never known how to properly run the game without much fail (as you do). I'd figure I'd ask you considering you've recently replied to some people despite the age of the video, which is great to see nonetheless. But is there something I've missed out? I've installed all 3 of the games through your links, The only real issues I've faced running Carnivores 2 has been loading into the actual hunt, as it'd take repeated attempts sometimes, ignoring audio files too as there would be stuttering throughout some of my playthroughs which is understandable. However, Ice age is specifically tricky as there seems to be a ring around my player where the texture is very choppy and see-through. Everything behind and in front of the area is perfect, but this one (approx. 5m thick) ring is unnoticeably annoying. I've looked through thick and thin online and I've not seen my problem listed anywhere. All the best.
So I tried to install The Middle Islands, I created a shortcut and turned on compatibility for Windows 98, but it says it can't open the res.txt file. The res.txt file is installed but for whatever reason it can't be opened. Edit: A few hours after I made this comment I got it working, I’d forgotten to extract the files first. I just completely forgot to edit
I want to play Carnivores Far North, but when I try, I get a "heap allocation error" and when I do what the video says, I keep getting error. This also happens with JP Hunter Legends, what can I do?
i downloaded carnivores 2. i did the heap thing but for some apparent reason each time i pressed hunt button and i couldn't start hunting. a window opened saying "programme can't be started, archive 01glide and some other numbers wasn't found. this can be fixed by reinstalling the programme" i reinstalled it and it still didn't work.
@@SaurianTarget Well, I have tried D3D in carnivores mods and with that, the plants and terrain will glitch out. Sometimes assuming the texture of the compass and other times i don't know how to describe. it's not game breaking but immersion breaking. OpenGL is only slightly better with the sky being the only thing that glitches with sliding ground and sky textures as far as I can tell. The only setting that doesn't glitch in these ways is Software and as you said, it's garbage. So again, if you have ways to fix these or can recommend this to someone else, let me know.
Have you experimented with the resolution and texture settings in conjunction with different video drivers? Usually, if someone messes around with different combinations of those, they can find a setting that works correctly.

I have retail copies of all the games, except the first one. The last time I tried installing a downloaded copy of the first game, the sound didn't work. And I'm pretty sure this was on my old Win98SE system. I really should try it again...
The only other thing I experience is that my firewall quarantines any mod I try to open, and I'm not sure how to get them back so I've ended up redownloading nearly all of my mods at some point. My way around this is just to turn the firewall off when k want to play, but that's a little annoying, so I was wondering if you knew a way to get the games to be accepted? It might be on the firewall side rather than the game side, but I wanted to check
That does sound like a firewall issue, as long as the mods are coming from ModDB, there should be no reason for them to be quarantined... If you turn the firewall off when you download them, will it then let you play them with it turned back on, or does it just see the mod's very existence as a threat?
@@SaurianTarget I think it might be because they are .exe files which my computer seems incredibly wary of, and so I think just a random exe file makes my firewall nervous and quarantines it
It happens to me that whenever I want to play a mod I get the error of can't open resources files rest_txt , so I put the rest files but I get heap allocation error , then I put the properties but the error can't open appears again resources files test_txt I don't know what to do to solve this help

@SaurianTarget The carnivores you shared in the description section do not work. When I try to open it with 3dfx, it gives errors such as initialization failure, mammap vxd and closes. It opens with software, but the resolution is low and there is no sound. The system is not new, there must be a problem with the files.
Saurian: has an entire home screen dedicated to carnivores. meanwhile me with only carnivores reborn because i dont have enough brain cells to even start any other carnivores game
Hey Saurian I am trying to download/open JP Legends and I'm getting that RES txt error. I can see the RES file in the folder but the game isn't recognizing it. Any way you could help me out?
I downloaded the Extreme Mod for Carnivores 2 and I keep getting this error message: Error opening file HUNTDAT\MENU\sl_bar.tga. How do I fix this? To add on to this, when I searched for the file in the mod's HUNTDAT folder I couldn't find it. UPDATE 2: After fixing several file errors, now all I have is a black screen. I was able to make a profile but I can't see anything else
For some reason when I switch the Video Driver to Direct 3D and try to start a hunt or go to the trophy room, it gives me the error message “Failed to create the D3D9 Device! Invalid call!” and sends me back to the menu. Setting it to 3DFX Glide does the same thing but sends me back to the menu before I can even read the error message. Does anyone know how to fix this? I’m using windows 10 btw.

Hey Saurian, not sure if you still respond to comments on this video, but i am having a problem with Carnivores. When i click "Hunt" on any modded version i am instantly greeted by a termination saying " Can't find procedure Audio_UploadGeometry address. Just wondering if you have the fix for this?
Oh man, I’ve gotten that one a couple of times… it usually works for me with a computer restart, but Carnivores is so old and so finicky on everyone’s different machines, I’m not sure if there’s been a reliable fix for this found yet :/
@@SaurianTarget Not sure if this makes any difference but, i have realised it only happens on some mods, Triassic, Carnivores+, JPH Legends, Mandibles work fine. Jurassic Park Hunter Legends Special Edition does not though, it will keep showing the error nonstop.

Hey man! So, bad news, Carnivores currently does not work on Apple devices, outside the mobile ports for phones 😭 you’ll need to get a PC in order to play the Carnivores mods
hey, im not sure if anyone else has this problem and i cant find a way to fix it. And before i continue i have set up in win 98 and i even went and go the crash fix. When ever i launch the game and try to click into it, it spazzes out my screen. I can see the dinohunt corp for a second and then it minimizes. If i just try click letters it will sometimes let me stay in and play in the main menu but then i get the same problem when i go hunt. I tried changing the video settings in the menu but the 3d one is the only one that doesnt act weird in game. I can find anything on this and its extremely frustrating. any ideas on what to do? video specs that i know off the top of my head: tv monitor gaomon drawing table (functions as a second monitor) nvidia gtx 1660 ti
I’ve had this problem for a while, but my pc can only run carnivores on software mode :( when I do direct 3D mode all of the plants and HUD and everything flash on and off and when I chose 3DFX the skybox is all screwed up. I’m getting a new pc so hopefully it works for that one 🤞
@@SaurianTarget well I just had to change the resolution. It only works on one setting but hey, at least it works! I haven’t tried it on my new pc so far tho. I got it but I need an Ethernet cable for it
Basically for ever Ive wnated to play carnivore mods but everytime I do it it say that It can't open the res txt so i was wondering if you could get me one for siberian expeditions.
I have no idea what I've done wrong. But every mod I've tried running either crashes whenever I start a hunt or has extremely buggy audio. The only one I've gotten to actually hunt in is far north. But I can see the meshgrid and every step i make sounds like I have 8 footsteps in snow. Triassic has no audio at all and crashes upon starting a hunt. And Triplex crashes whike making a horrifyingly loud noise. I also keep getting a missing menu.txt error.
Hi Saurian, I'm trying to install a copy of Carnivores 2 Vanilla on my pc (Win10) to use with the MEE, but the initial little window wont move after 99%. Is there a way to fix this? Same with Carnivores 1 and Ice Age.
I just installed my old discs. For some reason Direct 3D on Carnivores 2 only works for observer mode and Glide doesn't work at all. Guess I'll have to stick with software mode with the janky disappearing water whenever run mode is on, at least it's the most nostalgic experience since I remember the glitchy water from my childhood 🤣. Ice Age works on Direct 3d thankfully. Edit: Direct 3D only seems to hate Stegosaurus and Allosaurus hunts, seems to work fine on the Parasaurolophus and Ankylosaurus. Weird. Edit 2: Having "run as admin" and "disable fullscreen Optimizations" checked in compatibility seems to have fixed the issue so far.

Hmm, that's a good question. I'd try combining different video settings and different resolutions to see if you can get one that works out.

Hey you could make a video tutorial on how to put a creature from a mod?, such as the Saurophaganax to Carnivores+ complete with its sounds etc
i cant get the sound to work on carnivores 1 there is no sound at all, and if i tab out, all i hear is a loud screeching audio bug
play as hunter , don't play as the named save, there should be one already created with the name "hunter"

Do you have headphones plugged in or speakers connected? It's a silly question, but I've seen that happen when the game has no way to register sound
I found out that the "can't find res text" can be solved with the Heap Allocation Error fix!!!

Adding on to this thread; I have been using the OS Windows98/Windows Me through the properties. Do you know any solution?

I have retail copies of all the games, except the first one. The last time I tried installing a downloaded copy of the first game, the sound didn't work. And I'm pretty sure this was on my old Win98SE system. I really should try it again...
The only other thing I experience is that my firewall quarantines any mod I try to open, and I'm not sure how to get them back so I've ended up redownloading nearly all of my mods at some point. My way around this is just to turn the firewall off when k want to play, but that's a little annoying, so I was wondering if you knew a way to get the games to be accepted? It might be on the firewall side rather than the game side, but I wanted to check
That does sound like a firewall issue, as long as the mods are coming from ModDB, there should be no reason for them to be quarantined...
If you turn the firewall off when you download them, will it then let you play them with it turned back on, or does it just see the mod's very existence as a threat?
@@SaurianTarget I think it might be because they are .exe files which my computer seems incredibly wary of, and so I think just a random exe file makes my firewall nervous and quarantines it
Is there any way you could go into your firewall settings and customize it so that it doesn't identify those files as threats?

It happens to me that whenever I want to play a mod I get the error of can't open resources files rest_txt , so I put the rest files but I get heap allocation error , then I put the properties but the error can't open appears again resources files test_txt
I don't know what to do to solve this help
So i think i might of done it but when i open it my laptop says this application isn’t microsoft verified and it wouldn’t let me open it.
Ok i did but when i play the mod it isn’t in full screen and I don’t know how to make it full screen.

Hey saurian, I am a fan of your videos and carnivores. However, I want to mod but cannot find the software required. Can you please send me a link of the software required for modding? Also, the links to some dlc dinosaurs such as the indominus rex, are not authentic. It takes me to a wrong website. It would be appreciated if you could fix that. Thanks! :)
I'd recommend going to the Carnivores Saga site and browsing the "Modding Tools" section, that should have everything you need to start modding.

The carnivores you shared in the description section do not work.
When I try to open it with 3dfx, it gives errors such as initialization failure, mammap vxd and closes.
It opens with software, but the resolution is low and there is no sound.
The system is not new, there must be a problem with the files.
Are you by chance playing on Windows 11?

I downloaded the Extreme Mod for Carnivores 2 and I keep getting this error message:
Error opening file
HUNTDAT\MENU\sl_bar.tga.
How do I fix this?
To add on to this, when I searched for the file in the mod's HUNTDAT folder I couldn't find it.
UPDATE 2: After fixing several file errors, now all I have is a black screen. I was able to make a profile but I can't see anything else
For some reason when I switch the Video Driver to Direct 3D and try to start a hunt or go to the trophy room, it gives me the error message “Failed to create the D3D9 Device! Invalid call!” and sends me back to the menu. Setting it to 3DFX Glide does the same thing but sends me back to the menu before I can even read the error message. Does anyone know how to fix this? I’m using windows 10 btw.

When ever I go to hunt in Carnivores 2 +. everything is fine until I walk. When I do, the game sends me to the menu. Do you mind telling me the issue?

Hey Saurian, not sure if you still respond to comments on this video, but i am having a problem with Carnivores. When i click "Hunt" on any modded version i am instantly greeted by a termination saying " Can't find procedure Audio_UploadGeometry address. Just wondering if you have the fix for this?
Oh man, I’ve gotten that one a couple of times… it usually works for me with a computer restart, but Carnivores is so old and so finicky on everyone’s different machines, I’m not sure if there’s been a reliable fix for this found yet :/
@@SaurianTarget Not sure if this makes any difference but, i have realised it only happens on some mods, Triassic, Carnivores+, JPH Legends, Mandibles work fine. Jurassic Park Hunter Legends Special Edition does not though, it will keep showing the error nonstop.

Hey man! So, bad news, Carnivores currently does not work on Apple devices, outside the mobile ports for phones 😭 you’ll need to get a PC in order to play the Carnivores mods

hey, im not sure if anyone else has this problem and i cant find a way to fix it. And before i continue i have set up in win 98 and i even went and go the crash fix. When ever i launch the game and try to click into it, it spazzes out my screen. I can see the dinohunt corp for a second and then it minimizes. If i just try click letters it will sometimes let me stay in and play in the main menu but then i get the same problem when i go hunt. I tried changing the video settings in the menu but the 3d one is the only one that doesnt act weird in game. I can find anything on this and its extremely frustrating. any ideas on what to do?

I’ve had this problem for a while, but my pc can only run carnivores on software mode :( when I do direct 3D mode all of the plants and HUD and everything flash on and off and when I chose 3DFX the skybox is all screwed up. I’m getting a new pc so hopefully it works for that one 🤞
I hope so! Carnivores is always finicky unless your PC is straight from 1998, but maybe your new one will get it to work!

It sounds like some files weren’t extracted all the way, try extracting it again and make sure everything is selected

I have no idea what I've done wrong. But every mod I've tried running either crashes whenever I start a hunt or has extremely buggy audio. The only one I've gotten to actually hunt in is far north. But I can see the meshgrid and every step i make sounds like I have 8 footsteps in snow. Triassic has no audio at all and crashes upon starting a hunt. And Triplex crashes whike making a horrifyingly loud noise. I also keep getting a missing menu.txt error.

Hi Saurian, I'm trying to install a copy of Carnivores 2 Vanilla on my pc (Win10) to use with the MEE, but the initial little window wont move after 99%. Is there a way to fix this? Same with Carnivores 1 and Ice Age.

I just installed my old discs. For some reason Direct 3D on Carnivores 2 only works for observer mode and Glide doesn't work at all. Guess I'll have to stick with software mode with the janky disappearing water whenever run mode is on, at least it's the most nostalgic experience since I remember the glitchy water from my childhood 🤣. Ice Age works on Direct 3d thankfully.
Edit: Direct 3D only seems to hate Stegosaurus and Allosaurus hunts, seems to work fine on the Parasaurolophus and Ankylosaurus. Weird.
Edit 2: Having "run as admin" and "disable fullscreen Optimizations" checked in compatibility seems to have fixed the issue so far.
I feel like entire documentaries could be made about trying to get Carnivores to work on modern PCs and all the quirks that come with it 😂
