Hey everyone! Thank you all for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video. This is my first time uploading a Carnivores video. It's not my usual type of upload but I'll probably make a few more. I really enjoyed the process of making this video, and I think Carnivores has some really great worldbuilding to work off of.
James, this reminded me of a game I played as a kid !! I would have been on apple devices back in 2014 or so, and I think it was a paid game? I remember it being a dinosaur game, but forgot whether you were a dinosaur or a human, but I remember all the dinosaurs were kind of creepy and black. There was a volcano you could go into. I loved this game and hope someone might recognize what I'm talking about !!
Holy shit, you have reawakened a core memory in my childhood. I haven’t thought about this game in years, I didn’t even know the name but I remember playing it on my dad’s old PC. Man what a throwback, i need to check this out now that i have a name to look for.
I really like how they purposely used outdated depictions of dinosaurs as a basis for the aliens. It definitely gives the games their own feel to them. It makes the convergent evolution more believable because realistically these things wouldn’t look exactly like earth dinosaurs since they indipendantly evolved to fill a lot of the same niches utilizing similar body plans. Too bad the reboot just uses Jurassic Park designs and lacks the character of the original games. It would be cool if you did make some videos covering the extended/mod lore and different fan theories. It would’ve been cool if the reboot were to canonize some of those as a way to expand the world, while still keeping it true to the spirit of the old games. This was definitely interesting. Great video.
Thanks for the comment. I couldn't have put it better myself. The designs of the creatures in Carnivores are one of my favourite parts of the game. I don't think I've seen any other dinosaur media that intentionally uses inaccurate dinosaurs for artistic purposes without just being wilfully ignorant or anything. I think the old designs would have looked cool in the Reborn style and yeah I don't really like the Jurassic Park designs of that game. I'll definitely make some more videos talking about the extended lore of the mods. I think I'll start off with the Middle Islands mod which expands upon the lore of Carnivores Cityscape and gives an explanation as to why the dinos in that game looked way differently.
I can kind of see waht they were trying to do with the designs in the reboot. When the original Carnivores came out those old outdated 60s designs used were 30+ years old and now in the 2020s, those Jurassic Park 90s design are also becoming 30+ years old and are now also outdated. The 60s designs were better though, as they do feel more alien than the 90s designs.
Thank you Saurian! Glad you enjoyed it. I might make a Delphaeus Hills Ghouls video following this, or perhaps one looking at the extended lore from the mods.
"Aliens would have evolved completely different from life on Earth." I appreciate you making the distinction, because you're right, they're neither dinosaurs or animals, but don't sweep it under the rug how intense the convergent evolution is between the two planets. Sure, in the real world, that's the point, but in-universe, the fact that these aliens with no relation to Earthlings whatsoever independently evolved to look like this is kind of amazing and worth attention. Of course, plenty of sci-fi stories do stuff like this all the time, like Star Trek aliens just being humans but different colors or w/e, but it's still kind of amazing to think about what that means for xenobiology in the stories where it happens.
Real dinosaurs would probably look extremely different than the organisms of FMM-UV 32. But yeah the convergent evolution is still really evident. Especially with the plants in the game which are basically Earth plants as well as the mammals in Ice Age. Perhaps it's because of how similar the planet's conditions are to Earth's conditions; similar moon, similar size, temperature, etc... And convergent evolution like this doesn't even seem that farfetched considering what has happened with animals like the shark, dolphin, and icthyosaur. I think Carnivores manages to strike a really great balance between still being considered a dinosaur/prehistoric hunting series while also letting you remember you're on an alien planet in the future. Unfortunately the remakes really throw this out the window by going for generic maps and the almost Jurassic Park style creature designs. Thanks for the comment by the way, I like reading ones like this.

I guess its just one of those things that videogames sometimes can get right more than a movie ever could because you really get immersed in a game like this (especially as a kid, as I and many other here were when playing for the first time)
Awesome. Played the whole series cover to cover and was always captivated by the mysterious structures and disembodied voice of the temple in the first game - just those small atmospheric components did so much for a seemingly straight forward dinosaur hunting game. Thanks for the coverage and keeping the game alive in 22'!

I played the hell out of “Carnivores 2” back in 2000. It was a Christmas present from my Mom in 1999. It had a lot of flaws with the game mechanics (mostly dinosaurs clipping through the scenery and bad dino AI), but it was a lot of fun for its day. The entire franchise was a really novel idea for the late-90s/early-2000s.
I was obsessed with this game as a kid and had so many theories about all the unique areas. I never thought I would find a video like this but I'm so glad I did. This is amazing.
Thanks for giving these games the love they deserve! I used to play the mobile version all the time, so happy to see it's still around and appreciated.
I played the first game way back when I got my first Intel system, which was a Pentium 233Mhz with a Voodoo 1 card. I tried installing it on a later system, but never got it to work properly. I did play Carnivores 2 on that system though. I have copies of Ice Age and Cityscape, but I've never gotten around to playing them. I wasn't all that interested in Ice age to be honest, but a local store had it cheap and I'd read that you could swap the files between the games to have dinosaurs in the snow, or mammoths in the tropical maps. On Carnivores 2, I managed to get out of the trophy room, by running and jumping in one of the corners. It can take a while, but when you get up on top, it's just a vast, flat plain with a repeating texture. I think I also managed to get on top of the block in the center of the trophy room as well.
I remember playing the first game as a kid. I literally shat my pants when I was out in the water and the T-Rex started swimming towards me. I was always told that T-Rexes can't swim because of their tiny arms. So little me was terrified when that thing started coming after me out into the ocean.
Great video! I grew up playing the mobile ports of Dino Hunter and Ice-Age. Its awesome to see that this series still has a following, and even a modding community!
There is of course the question of *why* this alien planet for some reason has lifeforms that resemble what we used to think dinosaurs looked like... But eh, screw it, it's cool that's why.
Dude, I’ve had very blurry deja-vu type memories of playing this game as a little kid, but I’ve never known the name, or if it was something I just imagined. I can’t believe this was a real game, holy shit.
I still play these games, they have different maps and plant diversity. There must be a story behind this, but it has never been told. It would be nice to hear fan theories. Thank you for making this video, this wonderful series should not be forgotten! :)
Very interesting, I never know that this game actually took place on an alien planet with "Dinosaur-Like" Aliens and the lore itself is really intreating, hell it's a great setting for a RPG.
Hey, I remembered playing this in 2012 to 2014. It was the time where we get our first Apple product which is the Ipad 2. I still remember the frutiger aero UI design and the metally scent of the Ipad, as well as the leathery smell of the white capdase casing. Thank you for unlocking my memory when I was younger back then. I remember playing apache helicopter Sim, Barry Steakfries monster run, Sudoku by Zynga, talking games. And all the good stuff in the appstore of the early 2010's. Once again thank you for the video❤❤
Oh my god I remember playing the carnivores dinosaur hunter game on my iPod touch when I was like 10. Anything remotely stronger than a parasaurolophus scared the shit out of me lol.
Yo I remember playing this game along time ago and my elementary friends also used to play this, the mobile port is probably the infamous one. Back then i always think there was some sort of lore, because we hunt dinosaurs with modern tech
First pc game i ever played. I just got a computer and seen this game at walmart, i was 8 and knew nothing about pc specs lol.....but it worked and i played the heck out of it.
I love this franchise! Carnivores was the first Dinosaur and PC game I ever played 😊 sadly I only ever played the first one. I missed out on the much better second and ice age games. In recent years I tried to play some of the modded versions as well as the original but I’m no good with computers and can’t make the games run perfectly or well. Maybe one day I’ll follow a guide to optimize it
Im an absolute coward at this game. I would teleport to the highest places such as mountains so the dinosaurs couldn’t reach me. Except it didn’t work with the Trex so i was scared shitless
this game is my real childhood i remember playing this game with my cousins it SO FUN WHEN I WAS LITTLE this game is the real nostalogia yet its lore is scary
@@BackToBackJames In your opinion out of the original 3 Carnivore Games (the first two were dinosaur focused, I think the 3rd was the ice age one), which do you think was the best?
My god you just made me remember this game's name and how much I LOVED playing it on my parents phone back in the days. I sometimes thought about it but didn't remember the name. Now I do so I think I'm going to play a bit! And there is LORE!? That is cool. I never knew! Istill wonder what's the lore behind those Xenomorph eggs 6:45 tho. I remember finding them being kinda creeped out.
Fun Fact:In Carnivores: Cityscape, Dinohunt Corp actually attempts to use Historically accurate dinosaurs by using time travel, this was a side plot for Carnivores: Cityscape, that's why there some goofy ah ah looking animals there, Those are actual dinosaurs.
I played the original and now own the iOS version but one change that I can’t stand is the removal of weak spots. It makes the gameplay so much shallower that I can shoot any non t-rex anywhere and it won’t make a difference
2:40. Adjacent to a dinosaur is a dinosaur. If the morphology and behavior resembles the same body plan as Earth's Dinosaurs, why denounce FMM-UV 32's animals as anything else but? It's like saying Humans aren't animals despite the lineage coming from rodent-like mammals.
Humans share the same DNA with all other animals on Earth, and also directly evolved from other animals. The "dinosaurs" on FMM-UV 32 don't actually resemble dinosaurs from Earth. They resemble outdated depictions, but in terms of what dinosaurs actually looked like, the morphology and behavior is very different. It's a case of convergent evolution and even when it happens with two animals on Earth they're not considered to be the same animal.
@@BackToBackJames And yet here we are...people still consider stem-mammals as dinosaurs and humans as not animals. It is possible to classify an alien organism into a similar category. No matter how you spice it, those creatures are dinosaurs; just not the ones from Earth--and demonstrated by the HD new comers, does give an 'X' to doubt behind your head-canon.
Humans are objectively animals and stem-mammals are objectively not dinosaurs. It doesn't matter what the layman may refer to either as. If the animals on FMM-UV 32 aren't the dinosaurs from Earth, and only superficially resemble outdated depictions of them, why would we still call them dinosaurs instead of using a new term or classification?
@@BackToBackJames Okay. But Bananas are objectively fruit yet share DNA similar to Man, despite the Evolutionary lineage; so, by that logic, we should direct your question under the notion just the same with the simple replay of, "Why wouldn't you?" Regardless of whether most FMM-UV 32's organisms are outdated in appearance, they share the same physiology as their Earthly Mesozoic, Permian, and Cenozoic counterparts. If a creature resembles a Mammoth down to the last detail but were separated by other words, it doesn't anymore close related? What you're trying to convey seems like a double-standard based preservation bias.
@mr.n7237 The FMM-UV 32 dinos are not outdated in appearance because the game is outdated, they are outdated in appearance because it was a deliberate artistic choice showing that these are alien creatures. There are more similarities between humans and depictions of grey aliens than there are between Earth dinosaurs and FMM-UV 32 dinosaurs, yet grey aliens are not reffered to as humans. I don't understand your point because they are not similar down the last detail, like at all. If you took an animal that resembled a mammoth and changed its colour, size, anatomy, behaviour, and it's entire DNA sequence than why would/should it still be called a mammoth?
Kind of. I think 65 really does take place in Earth's past, and they crash land on the planet. But in Carnivores the planet really is an alien planet in the future, and it's bought by a company who use it as a hunting reserve
About the ancients and the origins of the creatures of the planet, my personal theory is that the ancients are not native to this planet and neither the planet itself is natural. All proof of the ancients don't point to a civilization, all that we find are symbols of places, large pyramids that praise the dinosaurs, a mysteriously haunted temple with a disembodied voice, structures that resemble some ancient human constructions but not quite the same, we never found a city or archeological evidence of living intelligent life actually making the planet its home, just a hole with a bunch of trash from this ancient civilization would prove that at least at some point the planet was home to them. More proof should exist, but nothing! We have large structures that would need a large number of people to build, but no sign of where these people lived or how they lived. Another topic that I like to talk in my theory is the wild life of the planet. The planet has a lot of diverse wild life that doesn't make any sense. A large amount of the dinosaurs are outdated depictions, but some are more in line with recent studies (the Cityscape ones) and other creatures are from completely different ages of Earth (dimetrodon, moschops and all of the creatures of Ice Age), and all of them seen to be a "greatest hits" of prehistoric creatures instead of actually having any cohesion on what timeframe to Earth they are. None of these creatures are a natural evolution of the planet, they were created by the ancients using Earth depictions of pre-historic animals as inspiration, but why and how? The ancient temple and some of the more eerie ambience in the planet may point out that the ancients have some type of supernatural powers, in my theory I believe that they more than just supernaturally powerful but actually a supernatural entity of the cosmos, they may not even have bodies and just be a space ghost, or hell maybe even a god of some kind, they at some point, probably at late the 20th century, visited Earth and found some of the humans art and concepts interesting, some of our structures of worship from the past, culture and study of life that came before us inspired they to replicate some of it in a distant planet, with supernatural powers they build mysterious structures mimicking our and created wild life similar to what they saw we depict in or museums and books, if you go with the idea that they are a god maybe the whole planet was created from the ground up since also a lot of the plants are earthly looking more than not. And that's it, I still have some tidbits about it that I don't really know where to put it, so I will put it here at the end. - The structures don't look to be abandoned by much time, most of them are very pristine, I believe this gives some kind of credit to the idea that they visited Earth as recent as 20th century and the planet structures and wild life is not that old. - The yeti is not a real animal on Earth so by existing one in FMM UV-32 may indicate that not only they looked through studies of prehistoric life but also human folklore. - Some of the geography is very weird, most of it is just engine limitations but I like to believe that it indicates that the planet is not naturally formed but was created making a lot of rock formations and overall land shape looking odd. This is already long enough, but I think it is interesting to bring some counterpoints to this. - We don't know how much DinoHunt corp (or even higher powers) are hiding about the ancients, I think they are not that much preoccupied with hiding much since they made some of it public, but maybe in other parts of the planet that we never see way more important discoveries about the ancient was dug out and what we can see in the game is just the tip of the iceberg. - Maybe the ancients don't have anything of the supernatural but just a very advanced technology, so stuff like the ancient temple voice is just a very high-tech speaker thingy instead of actual supernatural presence. But I don't think this changes my theory much, just replace god powers with terraforming and genetic engineering. - Maybe the devs just though all of that was cool and there's no real intent in much of anything.
@@BackToBackJames ohh I didn’t realize, that’s be awesome if you did the ones that were real, you could (if u wanted) break the tiers up into different videos, kinda like what wendigoon does

so dosent that mean that the creatures in the ice age version are also.. aliens…..?
@@TPNDPOOOOLEG ye pretty much
I had this game for years. I love it.
I did not know this games lore was this rich 😭 almost as crazy as Arks lore
Wow. Core memory unlocked, thank you for this man.
Glad I could make you feel that way, thanks for the comment!
I remember playing the first game as a kid. I literally shat my pants when I was out in the water and the T-Rex started swimming towards me. I was always told that T-Rexes can't swim because of their tiny arms. So little me was terrified when that thing started coming after me out into the ocean.
I used to play this and the ice age version for hours as a teen
Yooo I forgot about this game, I used to play it on my brother's Ipad while we were waiting to get picked up from school 😭😭😭
Lmao I used to play it on my brother's iPod touch. Those were good times
Great video! I grew up playing the mobile ports of Dino Hunter and Ice-Age. Its awesome to see that this series still has a following, and even a modding community!
I loved this so so much as a kid
There is of course the question of *why* this alien planet for some reason has lifeforms that resemble what we used to think dinosaurs looked like...
But eh, screw it, it's cool that's why.
Holy crap! There’s lore to this game! Count me interested
Dude, I’ve had very blurry deja-vu type memories of playing this game as a little kid, but I’ve never known the name, or if it was something I just imagined. I can’t believe this was a real game, holy shit.
Oh that’s the lore I always thought you play as some rich guy who hunts dinosaurs, but this makes more sense
I’m glad this game series has an active modding scene to expand on this lore,it’s REALLY cool.
Same
You're a hero, man. This is my nostalgia
This by the way explains why the ships that come by in carnivores are all space looking. Great lore, and great video. (:
Loved the series. Wish the game saw more popularity and continued over the years.
This was my favorite game as a kid
My childhood from home to home I was able to keep this game and played it all the time truly one of my core memories.
You just gave me a whole lot of memories my friend/ I subbed, keep this up.
Thanks a lot!
I've never heard of this game but hunting alien dinosaur things sounds crazy
HOLY SHIT I HAVENT SEEN THIS GAME SINCE I WAS A KID I FORGOT THE NAME AND JUST SAW THE TITLE AND HAD A WAVE OF NOSTALGIA
no wayyyyy i've not heard this since i was a child bro, it has lore?! epic video bro
Yup it has lore. Thanks for the support!
This game is my childhood
Same!
So basically..."We are the aliens that invading their planet" For them..Damn !
Use to play this on my 4th gen iPod touch 🤣
Lmao that's what I started playing this on too, way back in like 2011
Oh my god I remember playing the carnivores dinosaur hunter game on my iPod touch when I was like 10. Anything remotely stronger than a parasaurolophus scared the shit out of me lol.
The Reboot game might be in the same solar system as FMM UV-32 and the "Carnivores" got to the moon of the gas giant some how
When you put pictures of dinosaurs from Zdeněk Burian you reminded me that I have his book that I should read now :D as a Czech it warms my heart
He's an amazing artist
same here. :D ahoj!
all the unplayed AAA games i have and im about to download this one.
Ah Carnivores.... Good times!
I'm really hoping we get a super good dino hunting game some day.
I never knew those dinosaurs were aliens when I was a kid playing this game I thought I was actually shooting dinos
Mine blown
Hello! Long time fan of the games, This is a great lore summary!
Thanks!
Bro I’ve been playing carnivores pro for over 8 years and I never knew any of this 😂
Me and my older brother would play this game a long time ago and even to this day we sometimes make the wooly rhinos death sound to eachother lol
6:41
That’s definitely a horn coral
I remember playing the mobile ports all the time when I was younger
Dinos being aliens that just *look* like outdated depictions of dinos is a pretty 5D-chess play.
Waaaaay ahead of its time.
Dayum bro you brought shit out of the back of my mind man.
Have this game on my phone… still play it from time to time. One question… is the “facehugger” eggs part of the lore? Or is that just an Easter egg
Both. It's an easter egg of Alien like you mentioned, but lore-wise they are said to be the eggs of breeding dinosaurs in the area.
Headcanon, the game turok is a prequel
I remember one of the first times I played this game I got assassinated by a utahraptor from behind. There was no warning, just death
Very nice Video there! Keep Content Coming .)
It's an honour to hunt for you
Very enjoyable video
Thanks!
Wow thats something i didn't know i had forgotten
such a good game
Thank you for making this video! Carnivores hands down is one of the greatest games!
You're right about that!
@@BackToBackJames In your opinion out of the original 3 Carnivore Games (the first two were dinosaur focused, I think the 3rd was the ice age one), which do you think was the best?
@@TrueTributes13 I personally like the second game the best.
@@BackToBackJames solid choice!
So basically warhammer 40k death planet covered dino
I remember playing the mobile version as a kid.
That's what I started on
Same
Maybe FMM UV-32 is a seed world.
Never thought of that, it's definitely possible.
The in-game description hints at those being dinosaur eggs
@@BackToBackJames That makes sense
Fun Fact:In Carnivores: Cityscape, Dinohunt Corp actually attempts to use Historically accurate dinosaurs by using time travel, this was a side plot for Carnivores: Cityscape, that's why there some goofy ah ah looking animals there,
Those are actual dinosaurs.
I played the original and now own the iOS version but one change that I can’t stand is the removal of weak spots. It makes the gameplay so much shallower that I can shoot any non t-rex anywhere and it won’t make a difference
I still play this, I practically jumped on this video when I saw it XD never see anybody talk abt it
I enjoyed this vid!
Thanks!
The beginning lore of how the dinosaur planet was found is literally the script for the movie 65 wtf
Kind of. I think 65 really does take place in Earth's past, and they crash land on the planet. But in Carnivores the planet really is an alien planet in the future, and it's bought by a company who use it as a hunting reserve
I remember my cousin had this game on his computer. Never knew what it was called.
- Maybe the devs just though all of that was cool and there's no real intent in much of anything.
could you go over the iceberg for this game please, nobody has made any videos on it and i think you would blow up. It’s trending on tiktok right now
I'll see what I can do, I've been hesitant about making that video for a while because most of the iceberg is fake entries
@@BackToBackJames ohh I didn’t realize, that’s be awesome if you did the ones that were real, you could (if u wanted) break the tiers up into different videos, kinda like what wendigoon does
