- THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS RACE IN MANUAL!! - Forza Horizon 4 Tips & Tricks
Right guys, welcome back to Forza Horizon 4. In this video I'm going to be showing you the difference between automatic and manual shifting and why you should always be racing in manual. I know that from 12.7 to 12.5 seconds isn't a HUGE improvement but if you can be quicker in a 12 second race just by switching from automatic to manual then a longer race is going to be a lot quicker. Imagine the difference on the goliath for example. I hope you enjoy the video :D

I know how it works, today I switched to manual and I know when to change the shift but I cannot concentrate to the race and the curves and the gearbox
Same
Mr.Batman17 I just listen to the engine, and you kind of know when to shift. You get used to it after a while.
Mr.Batman17 same yo its literally fucking me up
I always downshift way to much!
Bruh
The most significant advantage of manual over auto is actually that you do not have to tune your gearing too much. If you play on Auto, remember to always tune your gearing well so you can compete with manual. If you tune it well, the diff between auto and manual is trivial for most players.
using manual makes the experience better
It definitely does :D
@@Born2Game It's so hard tho
@@deltapi6880 True. Unlike sims, where you race the same track over and over and get to know the corners, games like this, you don't know which corner is coming up half of the time, which is kinda weird to actually race in manual then if you don't know when to down shift excactly.
I mean auto is ok but we all know it’s more fun to be shifting them gears 🤟💯
There’s nothing wrong with racing in auto but manual is much more beneficial for racing, on this game at least :D
Born 2 Game I totally agree ! 💯😊
I agree... sort of. In real life there is no doubt that manual is more fun but in video games it is not as great
C4PT41N D34DP00L I definitely agree 💯
Been using manual ever since I bought the game, it's so much better and fun, downshifting around corners you'll be faster then the AI cause I'm sure they are set on auto
I am just starting to learn to use manual with clutch in Forza Horizon 4, but I have gotten to familiarize myself with the 1932 Ford Coupe or whatever it's called though. Stock with no upgrades there's only three gears you have to deal with, but with more upgrades making it faster it works its' way up to having the full six gears. Just adding a race carburetor and twin turbo moves from three gears stock to five years in total plus adding drivetrain upgrades as well. The Ford Coupe in the game usually will sit in first gear until forty miles an hour when it tends to shift into second, and then every gear so on has a twenty miles per hour range before you shift into the next one.
Make a good starter car for newcomers like myself at least to get used to manual with clutch driving, and it is definitely funner compared to using automatic transmission after awhile. I noticed a common problem with grasping the concept of when to downshift, and I encountered the same issue when starting out. Trouble with downshifting can easily discourage beginners away, but I'd keep trying over until you eventually get the hang of it. The car is slower than the faster ones out there, and shifting into gears is at a slower pace so it's easier to handle the process which is good for beginners.
Keep trying over and over is what makes you good at things, practice is all you can really do until you get the handle of the concept. Faster cars can be trickier as you have to downshift and upshift faster than a slow car from the early thirties, but in drag racing though it's a whole lot easier kind of compared to other forms of racing.

Ive played since manual with clutch was a thing so when forza started but yeah it completely changes the game and belive it or not if you have the race wheel with gears and clutch it helps you in real life lol
Not to mention that Manual is very good for Drifting and plus it makes almost any drift car good if you know what your doing.
100%. That’s how I got 126,000 score on the drift zone just to the north of the Horizon Festival :D
I'm 13 years old and I love using manual transmission and they have changed the way I play. Every second of my game became thrilling and I have learned the trick to shift normally without any flaws. Thanks for the video👍🏻❤
Cos some people think kids can't drive in manual
Switched to manual and it gives me more pride in myself (except for corners)
Take a slow car first like the Acura RSX type s and then go for a quicker car like the Audi RS3 or audi RS2! Then start soing some SPRINT races then do more! Eventually you wil get used to it!
One absolutely CRUCIAL reason why you should get to grips with manual, even if it's just a really, really basic understanding of it, is drifting. There are some drift zones in the game that, very simply, are ubnplayable in automatic. I think a lot of people don't get how crucial gearing is in drifting and try and do the drift zones in auto - and that'll get you two or three stars on most of them.
But if you want to get half-decent scores in the drift zones then you really have to use manual. As an example of the difference it makes, take Needle Climb on Fortune Island DLC: it's the very, very long, very, very windy road that leads down(or up, but you're always better off drifting it downhill) the mountain in the north: when using automatic I must've spent twenty or more separate tries agonisingly trying to get three stars. Eventually I managed to get a 120,000 points as my maximum.
...Cut to six months later, when I'd started using manual to drift: I got in my Gymkhana 10 Fiesta, left it in third gear, and on my first go _doubled_ my previous record. My third go _tripled it._ The difference it made was just ridiculous.
The difference manual shifting makes to racing is attested to in this video, but it's not going to necessarily shatter all your lap records if you switch to it. But the difference manual makes to drifting is just gigantic. First of all you will destroy your previous drift zone records, which is a lot of people's first concerns...but more importantly imo is that you won't understand what drifting is about, why people love it so much, unless you use manual. Downhill drifting Needle Climb in third gear in a Gymkhana car is one of the most addictive feelings in any game I've ever played. I finally understood why people valued drifting.
So yeah...manual. If you want to drift, you have to use manual. That's not a recommendation, it's a requirement. And bear in mind, I've only just started using manual at all, I'm pretty shit at it. I don't use it in races yet and downshifting freaks me out. Yet it has massively expanded my drifting abilities already.
Well said my friend! I am in the exact same situation as you, starting trying out manual for drifting and it is an absolute requirement. You need to be able to control your shifting when drifting and you cannot let the game do it for you. For racing however, I come from Need for Speed so I was always used to the way more arcade style where I wouldn't shift at all, so I am trying to use manual here and there when I'm just cruising around. I don't necessarily feel a difference in my pace, but I understand that people would want to shift themselves and have a more immersive experience. It is still difficult to focus on both the road and the shifting/downshifting.
So, for anyone reading this that is new to Forza, you can certainly start with automatic for racing, because I wouldn't say that using manual makes that much of a difference, and it is difficult to focus on the road, the car, and the shifting, all at once. However, for drifting, as @TheSprawl said above, you just have to use manual. Most of the time you won't even have to shift gears, but you just need to control the gear you choose to be in, and not have the game upshift or downshift for you when you shouldn't be switching gears. If the game upshifts when it shouldn't, it just kills your wheelspin and, as a result, your drifts. Use manual for drifting, you'll understand why.
@@cs-yz9yo Sounds like you're in the same situation I am. Until FH3 I only played arcade racers like Burnout. (I'm not even sure if there IS a manual option in Burnout.) Just adjusting to a game like Forza, where instead of taking all corners sideways at 200mph you actually need to use the brake, took me about a month. But I still stuck with automatic.
And it's only the start of this year that I began using manual. Like you say, in racing it's not much of an advantage to me(yet), and I'm hazy on when I should stay in higher gear and when I should downshift, but it just makes the process of cruising the Horizon map more immersive.
As for drifting; it's mandatory. You just can't drift without it. I'm now at the point where I'm dipping my toe in clutch kicking and trying to break 500k on the Needle Climb, but if I'd begun with manual when I first bought FH3 I've no doubt I'd be much, much better at this game than I am now.
@@thesprawl2361 Yeah I used to play Burnout a lot as well! Burnout Paradise was what I would play the most and before that Burnout Dominator. At first in Forza I was trying to take some 90 degree turns by using the handbrake like I used to, but I would just go flying across the road into the woods instead. Even that took me some time.
replying to a 3 y.o. comment but this
>There are some drift zones in the game that, very simply, are ubnplayable in automatic
is plain wrong.
I completed every single drift zone in FH4 in automatic with 3 stars.
@@emp1u What I said was also this: "But if you want to get half-decent scores in the drift zones then you really have to use manual."
If you got three stars and stopped there you did not get a high score. A good score, on, say, Needle Climb would be 500k-ish. A properly high score would be 580-ish. A brilliant score would break 600k, and my score, which was in the top 200 in the world, was 612-ish. World record scores were about 630/640-ish when I last checked(That was before the glitch scores started proliferating)
Ditto any of the drift zones in FH5. The volcano drift zone 3 star score is 500k. But the world record is somewhere around 1,290,000. I'm 60,000 points off that, yet still at 400th in the world.
3 starring a drift zone is not an achievement, and I never said it was impossible to do so in automatic.
u should actually shift out of the 1. gear earlier but with the others you are right about the automatic setting switching gears too early
I would advise everyone taking the time to learn to use manual. It's so much faster, and it's not as hard as it feels when you first start trying it. First off, make sure you start with a slow car like a Mazda MX-5 1990 in D-Class. Sometimes you gotta learn to drive slow to learn to drive fast.
If you go manual, then you have ZERO reason to not go manual with clutch. Adding the clutch makes your car even faster than just manual minus a few exceptions listed below.
The trick is swapping the e-brake and clutch buttons in the settings so that using the clutch takes no extra muscle memory learning if you're also learning manual for the 1st time.
Switching the clutch and handbrake gives you the ability to hit the clutch and shift up or down with the same finger. The clutch is X on PlayStation and the A on Xbox, so the clutch is right next to the shift buttons. All you do is hit both buttons at the same time. It is really just that easy, so if you're going to use manual, there is only one reason not use the clutch which is mentioned at the bottom of this rambling essay.
For Xbox, after swapping the handbrake and clutch, the clutch will be the A button. Shifting up is B and down is X, so there's no issue being able to use the clutch on either console.
Also you don't need to hold the clutch down the entire time when down shifting multiple gears. Simply tap both buttons at the same time as quickly as possible then repeat to shift again.
There is no difference in how to shift using manual vs manual with a clutch minus hitting both buttons at the same time. It's not hard to hit 2 buttons at the same time lol.
Now you can use the original clutch button, L1 or LB depending upon what system, but you'll need to be braking with your left middle finger instead of index finger. For me, that doesn't work because I don't have anywhere near the same level of control over the brakes with my middle finger as opposed to my index finger. However, if you already use your middle finger for the trigger buttons, then keeping the clutch on L1/LB might be the way for you.
The exceptions to the rule: Any car that has a sequential transmission will not need the clutch. Basically any actual racecar like F1, Indy and etc don't need a clutch because they are designed to slam into gear without pausing the drivetrain. Nascar is the exception to this, so use a clutch if it's Nascar.
Also never let off the gas when changing gears. Forza is not realistic in this manner, so if you want to maximize your speed, don't let off the gas when shifting up.
Also you can shift down as fast as you can without spinning tires. You don't have to match the gear to speed while braking and downshifting. In cars like the Bugatti, downshifting early while braking will help slow you down much, much quicker. It's all about finding the car's limit to downshift as early as possible without spinning the tires.
Castle Clash legend 😩
This is very helpful, thank you!! Never knew you could hit the clutch and shift buttons at the same time; makes things so much easier now
Thanks for this, going to try it out now.
It doesn't make you faster, it just makes you feel good when going fast.
i get bored if i dont use manual with clutch :v
im new to cars whats a clutch?
Edmund Ng you have to balance it out before changing gears and if you don’t your car is going to stall
W h A t S s T a L l?
Edmund Ng lol
Ryan Cannon That’s not nice.
I advise beginners to switch the controls from A and X to LB and RB as soon as they switch to manual. I don't know if many people really play in automatic and traction control, I mean the benefit of manual without TC is so obvious
Gd lad I always use manual takes a while to get use to if your new to it but once you nail it your laughing you can always use less powerful cars at first to get use to it
"Always", manual's obviously better than auto, but manual with clutch might be better still, especially for drag. 1:48 - plus, changing TC to off invalidated the test, scientifically, as that's another variable, so could have been the source of the faster time (although it might have lessened the improvement too).
Also using manual you can money shift from 5th to 1st and help a lot with breaking assuming you can keep the car under control. And because it's a game the money shift won't ruin your engine!
I understand the driving forwards and and shifting part. But what about braking and slowing down? Is it the literal opposite?
Yeah, make sure you down shift when braking and slowing down. Playing and getting practice will be the best thing to do, it shouldn’t take too long to get used to :D
You can tell by the sound of the car if you are in the right gear or not out of the corner and after braking.
Yeah, but time it right. Downshifting too high in the rev range means sudden power to the rear wheels and sudden loss of control
Craig Kingdon completely agree - both are key in good shifts, I guess the more you play the easier it gets you kinda learn by yourself:)
It really is all about feel. Every car is different and also every CORNER is different (uphill, downhill, etc..) In a straight line, as the needle drops during a braking sequence, you should generally aim for downshifting when the needle is about about 3/4 (going left to right ) of the way through the rev range which is typically between 4.5 - 5.5k rpm. Again, not all cars will be the same (even cars in the same class) because different engines will deliver a different amount of power at the same rpm. Understanding the amount of power your engine is delivering at what rpm is important for knowing when to change gears (up or down) in different instances and overall control of your car.
Thank you I just switched to manual and this helped
You’re welcome 👍
Agreed... I used to be anti manual/clutch because it seemed like too much work... one day I was reading tutorials for drifting (I used to hate drifting too) and found manual with clutch was 100% necessary. Long story short, I didn't want to have to switch my shifting based upon the event so I learned to shift (I drive a stick IRL) and now my cornering game is where I do my passing.
You get so much more power through corners in manual, it’s amazing. I always played automatic until my mate showed me how much faster it is to race in manual :D
Yes! I could never drive an auto on Forza again.
100% buddy. Manual is the way forward :D
@@Born2Game i like auto more beacuse you can go at whatever speed you whant

I’m glad it helped :D
Yeh I've noticed that if your playing against ai youl zip right past em prty easily sometimes in a straight way
manual is so much fun , struggle with manual w/clutch to take off
Any tips on downshifting though? Thats the only reason I play in automatic. Cause I can't downshift to save me
I normally just put it in 2nd gear round corners, you’ll get the hang of it 👍
Awesome video very informative. You just gained a new sub.
Just like in a car you have to do it by sound, after a while upshift easy, downshift you don't have the g force like in a car for the feeling, so by sound also, but is not as intuitive.
Manual's a hell of a lot better for drift. Approach the corner, shift down so the rear wheels lock and slip, tap the brake, countersteer, shift back up once you're clear. Heel-toe, baby.
It makes a huge difference drifting as well. Forget the clutch tho its unnecessary
Troy Sorensen clutch kick?
Troy Sorensen clutch definitely helps for drifting. Clutch kicking 👌🏻👌🏻I pull the ebrake coming into a corner then clutch kick and hit the gas
I legit have no Idea how to drive a manual let alone perfectly drive an auto so I want to practice driving and stuff have also just always wanted one of these
Since i drive manual, i cant hear music while driving, because I need to hear the RPM while driving :D
I am afraid of changing to manual because while I can master it on a car after 3 hours of driving- I like to drive alot of various cars where everything is different.
The only thing that changes is when you have to shift up and down. Try it and see how you get on with it 👍
Manual definitely. I use a Logitech G920 with paddle shifters. Drifting however is much better with a game controller.
Manual/w clutch is very quick especially in corners and braking. You can brake very late and still slow down by not shifting down, bcos shifting down generates more torque which jolts you forward instead of slowing down.
Its actually the opposite. Changing down gears makes the engine decelerate (engine braking) which the car slow down even faster.
The fact you have ABS on slows you down a ton
I’ve never thought of taking it off. I’ll give it a go, thank you for the tip 👍
Can you do a tutorial on how to play with manual?
I explained it in this video buddy

I finally got my car to go 160 in 2nd gear
nice and informative video
I had all helpers on, but switched to full OFF, and to manual gear box. It was disaster. I had perfect lines(almost) before, i could compete and win ranked races 5-6 ranks. And i lost it all. Cant concentrate on lines, eyes always jump from map to car to speedometer and loosing concentrations, lines goes in hell, especially S2, even worse rain/snow. I thought it will be few hours, or 1-2 days maybe maximum. But it took me about week i think, to get back to my previous level of driving with all help and automatic gear box. Now it feels really great and all i do is i hold in my memory what gear im on right now, to never look to speedometer.
But, i turned ABS on after some time. Yes, no ABS gives really nice advantage, but only when you totally calm, control car, know track. For me it didnt worked well. In tracks i know it gave me some bonus, but when track not very familiar, i always loose. ABS giving you room to do some mistakes, slide in corner etc. Especially if you lost control a little bit and trying to get back to line, ABS saving really much. So ABS works much better for me than no ABS cause i still can do mistakes and they are not fatal.
Also i found that its hard to drive RWD with manual. But not because oversteer itself. Mostly because you thinking before corner what gear to switch to have maximum power, and you release throttle and waiting to pass apex then push throttle again (i dunno why but thats how my brain worked first few days). But with RWD you must give some accel into corner to slip in and then open full throttle in exit. It was hard to make brain give some accel in corner. I still have this problem sometimes.
Turn everything off too except abs and turn damage off as its long 90 % bonus on unbeatable and most races are pretty simple
I’ll try it with them settings when I’m next playing :D
.2 of second 😫
In a straight without a perfect launch, manual is better for cornering, specially for down-up shifting to get a boost and exit faster. just try it for a bit in freeroam around corners.
well if u use keyboard its better auto, and if u have drive gear then manual
it's preatty easy in a straight line, but it all changes in racing circuits or sprints

"Trunk Driving" isn't cool though.
"That was much better!" Literally only took 0.2 seconds off the drag time.
In a drag that would last 10-15 seconds, 0.2 seconds is a good time to improve by when you're almost at max performance. It would be different if the race took 45 minutes and I was taking 0.2 seconds off the time
@@Born2Game you see that would be a very valid argument if you shows us that same race you did multiple times. A 0.2 second variable can change multiple times by many different variables. Mostly including wheel spin. So if your trying to prove a point you should have performed that same race at least 3 times, added up the sums, and divided by 3 to get the average time of those races and then compare. One race simply will never convince people
