This is my favorite YT channel. It’s nearly impossible to find HS teacher channels and I love that you teach Latiné studies because that was my minor and when I become a teacher I actually want to teach a Latiné literature course (I’m studying to be an English teacher). Love all of your videos and can’t wait to see more of your stuff! Have a great school year!!
Erica!!! Got me tearing up at the gym 🥲🥲🥲 This really means a lot to me, I’m really grateful to be connecting with other/future educators in this space. A Latine literature course would be amazing in HS. Since we usually don’t get those course opportunities until college. Plus there’s so many amazing Latine authors/poets to highlight in a lit course. So excited for you to enter education!
Thank you for mentioning the pay schedule! People have such a misconception that we get paid for our summer break and in reality we don't. Some systems spread out the pay scale in a way to help with that. My system pays twice in May and then once in June and we don't get another paycheck until the end of August. It's nerve-racking during July and August bill time but we do what we gotta do.
Oh no! Sorry to hear about your pay. I’m a socal teacher and we are able to spread our salary across 12 months or opt for only the 10 months we work. This year I’ve invested a lot more into my classroom. I have more windows too but it was the first thing I covered because of the scary things happening. I could never imagine being in a classroom like yours! It’s beautiful but I’d be too anxious 😭 As for wall space a faux bulletin board would be nice , you can have a word wall, posters, student work, student of the month, classroom norms, a decorative area for the unit you are on, important info, announcements, etc. Thank you for sharing! 😄
Fabulous ideas for the wall!! I think I will leave the majority of it for my students to help me with. And for the windows, I have several options and Im looking into how much my school is willing to help me with costs in order to cover them up. For both privacy and safety!
Nice room and you clearly have a plan to make it have your own style which is interesting since I'm a high school English/Social Studies/Music teacher w/ a couple of rooms to organize so I'm always looking for ideas to get a new feel for the year and your ideas about color are ones to think about so grateful!
Hey Cheney! I have watched so many of your videos and love your channel and vibe. I’m a Senior Seminar teacher, so it was so cool to hear you mention it 🥰✨
@@CheneyCo_ I like seeing how the other 1/3 lives lol I’m an elementary school teacher but I used to want to teach high school so I’m living that out through your vlogs lol
I'm very sorry to hear that you don't get paid during the summer break. I wish societies and governments would appreciate teachers more. I'm very grateful to be a teacher in the Netherlands, since I do get paid during my summer breaks. Take care, you've got this!
I used to have the column problem! Mine was much smaller, but still annoying, I work in a shop/computer lab situation, and when I first moved in I had two projector locations, one by the computers and one in the shop area, the one in the shop area hada power pole that ran right in front of the work tables so it always blocked at least one seat. After a year of trying to work around it, I challenged some seniors who got done with a project early to come up with a floorplan that "sucked the least" and they were happy to move heavy work tables around until there was (basically) no terrrible pole seat.
It suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. It’s really only been an issue for my kids who sit by the door. It’s right in their view between them and our tv. I’m still trying to figure out the layout, but getting 20+ students in here is already a struggle and some of them end up having to sit on my couch because there is no where else for them to sit. Not that they complain about it, but I used to use the couch as a reward for staying focused. Now it’s necessary seating space lol. I may try to use that challenge with my students!! Thank you for sharing!
I have never seen a school layout like yours, especially with those garage lift doors as an access point. That free wall space can be turned into a class project using poster boards for a thematic wall mural. Maybe the center metal post can display all Latin flags? And I laughed hard at your ...I'm a sweaty bitch sometimes ...hilarious.
Is there anyway you could get a new white board installed and move the desk area closer to the window where your bookcase is? The pole would then be NOT the center.
Do you feel being a teacher is worth it? I’ve always wanted to be a teacher but am getting second thoughts on pursuing it just because of the lack of support I’ve heard teachers get. Do you think it’s stressful or worth doing it especially if it’s something you’ve always wanted to do?
I think that can be a difficult question to answer. It’s true that teachers, in general, are under appreciated, underpaid for the work we put in, and most do not receive the support or resources needed. Also, I think your district and admin can be a huge factor in making it either worth it or not worth it. I’ve been incredibly lucky to be part of a district that makes me feel valued and gives me the freedom to create my classes the way I want them. It can definitely be stressful, but the students I serve make it worth to me personally. I would say that becoming a teacher can be worth it if/when you find the right school for you.
It’s really an introductory level course to Latinx studies, and we look at Latinx experiences in the US through Literature, music, film, art, oral histories, etc. I created the curriculum myself inspired by courses I’ve taken throughout college.
@@erica11717 perfect! Really quickly, I definitely recommend getting the book by Juan Gonzalez “Harvest of Empire: a history of Latinos In the United States” it’s a great reaource, you can use it as a text book or to help you craft curriculum.
I was scanning through and finally found a Hispanic high school teacher and immediately subscribed. I’ve been teaching for twenty three years. Let me give you some words of advice. I unsubscribed from your channel because you called yourself the “B” word and your background music was full of curse words. I’m not a prude, however you will eventually have students and parents viewing your channel. Whether you like it or not, you are a role model for our youth (especially Hispanic women). I wouldn’t want to see your teaching position and/or PHD be compromised because of your videos. Believe me when I tell you admin/parents/students will watch them.

I would use warm soapy water to clean the walls - maybe with dawn dish soap.
and perhaps a magic eraser for any tough stains.
I’m going to try this and a few other options. I’m just worried about the paint since it seems to come off so easily! I’ll update you!
It would be neat if you could get maybe a couch or some big chairs donated to put against that big wall. It could also promote conversation.
Yes, I agree! Great idea!
Perhaps you can use window film or frosted spray (washable) for the windows?
My mom suggested this, too. I think I’ll have to get approval but I think it’s worth a shot! Thank you, it’s a great idea!
Ooh that's a great idea. If not, you could attempt to put up curtains.

Hi! Use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to take off that dirt on the wall
I will try that, thank you so much!

Decoupage tissue paper to cover window halfway up.
I finally got official approval to partial cover some of the window space. This is a great idea!

It doesn't hurt to ask. The worst they can say is no! I am still playing around with desk placement to see how I can give students the best view.
