Forestry - Maine
Below is a summary of the whitepaper for our Downeast Maine forestland.
The history and state of our Maine woodland as well as define our plan for preserving environmentally sensitive acres and putting into place a state sponsored timber management plan.
Background
The woodlot is 146 acres in Harrington, Maine, 45 minutes North of Acadia National Park. Access is off US-1. The land is unimproved with the last wood harvest estimated at over 30 years ago. The primary wood species on-site are: Atlantic White Cedar, Eastern White Pine, Red Spruce, Black Spruce, White Spruce, Red Leaf Maple, Hemlock and Larch.
Analysis
Harrington is a special place. Both the state and local community recognize the importance of their unique natural resources and support responsibly operated working forests. Environmental laws are in place and are aggressively enforced to maintain the long-term viability of Maine's forestland.
Economy:
Since the 1800's, the local economy has relied heavy on sawmill and timber-related activities. From 1800-1900, Harrington's economy was driven by shipbuilding due to their forest resources coupled with their proximity to the coast. Five Harrington shipyards built 130 vessels in the period of 1792-1920. When shipbuilding operations left the area, sawn timber and paper production increased to fill the void. In the early 2000's, multiple biomass operations opened in Washington County spurred by tax subsidies. The timing seemed ideal, as biomass operations stepped in to replace lost timber demand resulting from paper mill closures. From 2013-2017, five long standing paper mill operations closed, causing unemployment and depressing the local economy. Unfortunately, several biomass operations also closed with little warning by early 2017. Loggers and sawmills went and forestry jobs were lost.
Forest Condition
Our land is currently idle, unimproved and un-managed. Despite a dense lush appearance, the forest is not healthy. In November of 2018, Maine State Forester Michael Jensen noted that low quality shade tolerant species are monopolizing the soil and sunlight resources to the detriment of higher quality long term growth. This is a common phenomenon in idle forests. A properly implemented management plan can correct the imbalance.
Preservation Area
There are two environmentally significant areas on our parcel.
Curtis Creek - A clamming site, borders the western portion of the lot. It is listed in the Downeast Coastal Scenic Inventory for Washington County.
Harrington Heath - A peatland bog on the North East portion of the lot, is a wetlands area and water fowl habitat including Bald Eagles and Peregrine Falcons.
Forestry Objective
Our working forest area refers to the wooded areas excepting Curtis Creek, Harrington Heath and their buffer zones. Our goal is transform the woodlot into a productive sustainable working forest with high quality timber over the next 20 years. Here are our steps for the next 24 months
Take an inventory of timber tracts currently on the land. Identify and delineate the working forest areas from the protected areas and their buffer zones. Develop a management plan with a state-approved forestry consultant reflecting our long term goals. Perform a selective thinning to re balance the timber specie mix toward maple, spruce, cedar and white pine while preserving the aesthetics of the land. Design logging roads which can be converted to public access paths.
Use proceeds from timber sales to fund the public access paths and their maintenance.
Resources
Woodwise Program - A state sponsored cost sharing program for Maine woodlot owners willing to sign a landowner stewardship pledge for a minimum of 10 years.

Nice video Steve, and welcome to Maine... smilz
Udgrin2 Outdoors in Maine Thanks! Our Forest Management Plan just came in last week. Can’t wait to get back - likely February 🥶
great job, we support sustainable resources
Thanks. It has been a fun adventure for our family! Thank you for watching-Steve
I was stationed in Worcester, Mass back in mid 70's and traveled to Maine several times. Climbed Mount Katahdin , saw the Allagash River and visited Old Town, ME. You ought to stop in Old Town, Maine where they hand made Old Town canoes. Fascinating! I don't know if the canoe company is still there (along the Penobscot River) but it was fun to see their various hand made wooden canoes. That's where I saw a massive wooden hand built canoe that appeared to be 20 feet long. The proprietor was very cordial and entertained our novice questions (smile). Have a fine weekend.
Houndsman One We love it in Maine. We’ve not been to Katahdin yet. It’s a huge state with so much natural beauty. Will have to make it to Old Town sometime soon. Thanks
Awesome 👏🏻 a big positive 👍🏼
Thanks, so much. We're having fun out in Down East Maine and learning a lot at the same time.
Give it up for Maine!
of course. Always!
Mane is not far from us... We are in Ontario around Algonquin Park area forestry is a big thing here.... I'm proud we do not clear cut in Ontario we harvest the trees we want and leave the rest so the forest grows back strong and fast with biodiversity... Nice to have you around
Wild Edibles thanks for watching. We love it in Maine. Have not made it over into Canada 🇨🇦 yet but likely will next year. See you around!
That's awesome mate, what a great step for your business. Our natives are generally extremely slow growing so plantations are few. I'd love to see commercial bush 'parks' set up instead of ugly miles and miles of radiata pine😥Probably aint gonna happen though.
Thanks for the kind words!
New here keep grinding
Thanks for subscribing. It is a grind, isn’t it? I wish I got cardio benefit for the time I spend on this RUclips channel 😆 see you around..
Very interesting Steve! Good luck on your foresting journey. Quick question, what initially drew you to Maine as a location?
2019 Mildred MontagWe looked for a place that was beautiful and unspoiled yet rural enough that we can acquire enough land to a actually make an impact. Additionally, it had to be accessible enough that we could get to it. We found this parcel within a few miles of our Maine home. The timing was perfect!
Steve it's great to meet you! I'm glad we found each other and your right wood is a perfect resource. Well never be gone friend. I like what your about. Best wishes! Share my page if you like it!
It's amazing how one fickle algorithm can bring so many strangers together, like this!
Is Harrington close to Portland?
Heidi Ondich only in the sense that they’re both in Maine!
About 190 miles.
