Bernstein...the composer I wish I could have been! Bernstein said that he always enjoyed writing for John Wayne's movies as he could just open up, big and bold, and go for it. The Shootist, his last film score for Wayne was a bit different. The nature of the film didn't lend itself to previous John Wayne westerns and perhaps all knew was Wayne's last one. Nevertheless, it was a hell of a masterpiece for the man who appeared bigger than life on the screen. RIP Elmer.
We won't get a composer like him again. He is definitely one of the greatest and most of the songs are so memorable and haunting.

Bernstein was inspired by Jerome Moross’ soundtrack for The Big Country. You can hear the influence in Bernstein’s Western themes that followed.

At 8:31 we hear the theme to The Sons of Katie Elder which is very similar to Bernstein s theme to The Magnificent Seven
