The creative spectrum of Elmer Bernstein is nothing short of astonishing. The range of his talents as represented here - from the classic score of The Ten Commandments to Man With the Golden Arm, The Great Escape to To Kill A Mockingbird, Ghostbusters to The Magnificent Seven... he was a genius of a composer. How I wish he was still with us and exercising his superb gifts.
I fell in love with Elmer Bernstein's work as a young musician with the Magnificent Seven (my favorite). True Grit is second on my list. The score from The Shootist was a masterpiece....serious in its nature yet able to capture the magnificence of a colorful past. RIP Mr. Bernstein.
That is truly an impressive range. It also includes Cape Fear and Animal House. No relation to Leonard, he also pronounced his last name Bern-steen and not stine. For some of us of a certain age, we may remember that great Magnificent Seven theme from countless Marlboro ads.
@@mr.roberto1898 You are so correct, but - Wikipedia - “When Martin Scorsese announced that he was re-making Cape Fear, Bernstein adapted Bernard Herrmann's original score to the new film. Bernstein leapt at the opportunity to work with Scorsese, as well as to pay homage to Herrmann.” 1962 - Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum 1991 - Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte No question though, Bernard Herrmann should always be the primary composer associated with Cape Fear.
No Wrong answer to which is Number 1... but i choose the Ten Commandments... i like them all though :) to kill a mockingbird is also very good i havent seen the movie in ages and the music is very innocent and gentle.

i think the best is for the ten commandments , by far !!!
The magnificent 7 is one of the best scores ever, it's strong, it's sweet, calm, then emotional... I'd love it since i was a child.
His blazing and epic score for Zulu Dawn 1979 is under appreciated.

Elmer is definitely underrated and one THE best.
The opening for the Ten Commandments still makes me tingle. It's the greatest movie ever put on film.
That’s quite a segue, from Stripes to To Kill a Mockingbird!
Some fantastic pieces of music!
i think the best is for the ten commandments , by far !!!
Great. I felt you should have included Los Comancheros.
Something about the fact that he was such an epic and mostly serious movie composer made it work so well in Ghostbusters and Animal House.
They all are beautiful like magic
i think the best is for the ten commandments , by far !!!
That list can be longer. Sons of Katie Elder. Big Jake. The Magnificent 7.... I was raised on this stuff as a kid.....
The Magnificent Seven is in the above video... ! Saved one of the best for last....
Amazing!
Thanks a lot :)
I love when you know a composers work so well you can hear them copying their own work (Ghostbusters and The Black Cauldron for example)
Age of Innocence should be here

Today Commemorates Elmer Bernstein's 100th Birthday
One could edit a video with the length of "Gone With the Wind" in order to feature all the films scored by Elmer.
Heavy Metal score is very good too.
DON'T FORGET "ROBOT MONSTER" 1953!
Elmer Bernstein wrote the score for The Three Amigos, but Randy Newman wrote the song that is played in this video.
You Forgot Airplane AND One of his early works
Toccata For Toy Trains
You are right Justin it was scored by Jerry Goldsmith
The only individual to be nominated for an Academy Award in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s.
Don't forget The Sons of Katie Elder.

The Carpetbaggers, Hawaii, McQ, Riverboat (TV)
🎂Elmer Bernstein 04-04-2022
Honorable mention should at least be the National Geographic theme.
Isn't that just the Magnificent Seven score?
The Sons of Katie Elder theme is very similar to The Magnificent Seven theme
i think the best is for the Ten commandments , by far !!!!

To kill a mockingbird the great escape are the best
Even though modern in time, score in wild wild west is also very nice
You forgot his best one, and the best film theme of all time:

… that’s Mozart lol
You simply CAN'T have a top ten without Rudy,..(perhaps his best)...too big of an omission.
It's not here because Elmer didn't score Rudy
RUDY was scored by Jerry Goldsmith (who also scored HOOSIERS) - another great old fashioned composer.
i think the best is for the ten commandments , by far !!!
