"That's the Greatest comeback since Lazarus" Waddell was a giant in the darts world, and is sorely missed. His commentaries were always proliferated with amusing or historically referenced statements, that really hit the spot. And his Geordie accent, affable character and absolute enthusiam and excitment for the game were infectious. Sid Waddell definitely played his part in making darts as popular as it is, and was a massive contributor to darts becoming part of mainstream sports. Certainly in Britain.
I actually love that you paused to answer a call to your nan and didn’t edit it - that’s why we like you guys, humble & relatable - refreshing to some other RUclipsrs who try so hard to be something they’re not
Agree, having watched some of the PDC World Championships over Christmas time. And especially since with winning the Bahrain masters and doing well in major tournaments.
You need to check out the Michael Smith v Michael Van Gerwen 9 Darter from the World Championship Final in 2023. It was incredible & the UK commentary from Wayne Mardle 👌
MAKE THIS A THING!!! Was that sharing loud enough? I’m part of the channel oasis built - loved watching your rabbit hole learning and appreciating British music - now this could be the next (albeit smaller scale) one. I fully appreciate your honesty and acknowledgment that you didn’t quite understand darts (totally understandable in the states). I’m going to enjoy watching you both learn infront of us again. As I’ve mentioned before - you spoke about loving atmosphere and crowd - PLEASE watch the Michael van gerwen hits seventeen perfect darts video
You guys should react to Sid Waddell's best quotes from his time commentating on darts. It would be interesting to see if Americans understand his references, similes, and get his humour. That guy was such a character.. he was so unique, knowledgeable, and just naturally funny.. a very creative wordsmith. I was so happy when they named the World Championship trophy the "Sid Waddell Trophy" in his honour. He really was the voice of darts and a lovely guy.. there will never be another darts commentator like Sid ❤
I met him once at a tournament here in the states , this was pre internet days at least for me , so I had to ask him his name ,I had seen him on what dart shows you could catch back then , but could not remember his name , and he was a super nice guy . So I always pull for him in a event .
Taylor was discovered and sponsored by 5 time world champion Eric "the Crafty Cockney" Bristow. Sadly, Bristow developed dartitis (the yips) in the 1980s and was never quite the same afterwards.. it shortened his playing career by quite a few years. He was one of the fist darting personalities... he was very funny, super confident, a bit arrogant and cocky, but he could really back it all up with his skill on the dart board. He was one of the first players to really think through the maths side of darts and master it. He rarely, if ever, made tactical mistakes or miscounts - he would think about how to be first to a finish from the very start of each leg, and this gave him an advantage over the players at the time, who would often miss opportunities to reach a finish with mathematical errors.. Bristow instilled the same approach when mentoring Phil Taylor. Everyone else eventually realised the importance of mathematical play and started following Eric's tactical approach. Eric did so much behind the scenes to grow darts into the sport it is today. He is an absolute legend and a true darts icon - one of the most influential players to ever throw a dart. He is sorely missed by the fans who grew up watching him. Bless you, Eric ❤ Thanks for the video guys. It's great to see America developing players and building the sport in the US. And it's very cool to see American fans looking back at the darting greats of the past. It really is a sport for everyone to enjoy. I have recently started playing cricket (the US version) - what a fantastic game! I would love to see the PDC organise a cricket tournament in the future.
Been ghosting this channel for a while lads, but this has earned you a sub! Don't worry about getting stuff wrong, that's all part of the charm of a reactions channel ;)
I meet a few Dutchies through my job and the first question I ask them is: "RvB or MvG?" - all of them know exactly what I mean and have their answer. Gotta respect that.
Thank you thank you thank you guys, the greatest darts player in my lifetime! He has had many more fine moments, I witnessed a 9-darter when I saw him play in 2005 and the atmosphere is electric. As I said in your previous post, my daughters middle name is Taylor after him ❤
Eric Bristow, aka 'The Crafty Cockney' mentored Phil Taylor. Taylor spoke of phone conversations they had after Phil's early matches. Taylor said "I rang Eric, quite excited, to tell him I'd finished runner up in the Championship final. Eric said, 'Ring me back when you win' and put the phone down". A hard taskmaster was Bristow, but for good reason. Taylor had all the talent, and Bristow knew it, all he needed was someone to push him to the extreme. And that man was the brashest player on the planet, The Crafty Cockney! However, the apprentice finally defeated the master in the 1990 World Championship final, in a bit of a whitewash. Which was a massive breakthrough moment for him. It motivated Taylor to become mentally sooo strong, and he then went to win 16 world titles, most by one sided margins. The final meeting of significance between Taylor and Bristow was in 1997 in the World semi's, where, despite suffering from 'Dartitis' - a mental condition where the thrower struggles to release the dart from their hand - the ageing and ailing Bristow took Taylor all the way to a last gasp decider. A great last stand from Bristow, 10 years after he'd been World Champ and the dominant force himself. It was a changing of the guard, and time to hand over the reigns to Phil. And boy, did he grab it with both hands. He did lose the odd one though, Dennis Priestley, the slowed paced, dogged and maticulous northerner, nicked a world title win from him. But Taylor overall was a sensation, and more than lasted the course. Still winning mega matches until his retirement aged in his late fifties. He took on the new guard of players, including the Enigma, Michael Van Gerwin in his latter years, and still could still see them off. Van Gerwin is unstoppable at his best, and is 'The Problem'. Well Taylor found the solution ;) Their head to heads are a piece of art, and sporting history. Phil Taylor. The best player to ever pick up a dart. Simple.
There is a moment when you said… "Who knew darts could be so intense, it's like right down to the wire". Where do you think the phrase "down to the wire" comes from??😂😂
B4 the 1990s the wire on the dartboard used to be really thick , the darts would often bounce back off the wire , you would often hear the commentator say " OFF THE WIRE !!! "
You need to watch Phil Taylor vs Raymond Van Barneveld sudden death leg, 2007 or, Phil Taylor vs Mike Gregory sudden death leg 1992. The greatest finals, ever.
Back in the day, snooker and darts players were allowed to drink whilst playing. Maybe check out the "not the nine o clock news" darts sketch. Probably one of the reasons they stopped drinking.
I love watching darts. I play every day and it's so hard to maintain concentration. How these champions do it in this environment is really special. We need American darters in the sport. Keep up this quality content please lads.
Jocky Wilson would drink 4-5 pints then move on to pints of vodka and coke 3/4 vodka, 1/4 coke just to settle the nerves. When he retired he stopped drinking altogether.
Ok, you asked what next. The darts quiz show called bullseye. It's iconic and a cultural phenomenon of British life. It also includes some classic sayings. You can't beat a bit of bully.
I remember when he got interviewed and the interviewer said when did you relize you were good at darts Phil, Phil said when I walked home from the fair with my arms full
He did a 9 darter against Barney many years ago which won him a brand new car. He gave it away to a Dutch couple who were friends of his, who'd had the misfortune to be involved in an accident which destroyed their car. Phil thought it fitting to give them the car he won.
DARTS AND SNOOKER STARTED IN PUBS MOSTLY AND EVEN THE PROS USED TO PLAY WHILST DRINKING DURING MATCHES , SOME WOULD BE CLEARLY VERY DRUNK AND WERE STILL AT THE TOP OF THE GAME , AND IF YOU CHECK OUT JIMMY WHITE AND ALEX HIGGINS FROM SNOOKER LEGENDS THEY BOTH LOVED THE NOSE CANDY TOO ! 😅
I need to look for a sid waddel compilation to send you, he didn't just commentate on darts but he's a legend for the random lines he comes out with. Fun fact you wont find a Glasgow pub with a dartboard, the council banned them as so many people were being assaulted with the darts 😂😂
I’ve watched your channel since covid. It’s great how you take to the British way of life. Phil “the power” Taylor. The greatest world champion of any sport. 16 times. Check out Luke Littler. Just turned 17. He’s a force of darting nature. Darts is perfect for TV and the crowds are brilliant.
I think the boys have already reacted to “Bullseyes And Beer - When Darts Hit Britain”, which includes the tv director who first developed the split-screen method of showing darts on tv.
I think darts is so popular mostly because anyone can pick up a dart and play. But as you have seen the difference between being good and great is massive. I remember watching the 1990 world championship Phil Taylors first world title against Eric Bristow. I remember going to school the next day and the words Phil Taylor is God graffitied on the outside of the music room wall. And in 1992 when he won the second world title against Mike Gregory he proved it going all the way to a sudden death leg in that final. Phil Taylors 16 world titles is statically the best. But to be honest i still prefer Eric when he was at his best. He was the trailblazer for all of them. And he also spoted Phil Taylor potential, before he did.
I'd make a recent darts moments compilation just to watch both the 2 9-darter potential in the 2023 final (Smith v MVG) as the commentary live was also legendary, and also the Luke Littler rise too.
Hi guys, you might like to watch what Phil taylor did after he retired, like playing in the darts live matches in Japan, different format and bigger doubles trebles and bulls eye, still exciting to watch and to see him take his skill and play a different format is fun to watch, also brought out his comic side. There are plenty of the darts live games with him on youtube 🙂
Phil Taylor was making toilet handles(yes toilet handles) in a company in stoke until he was 27, Another darts player Eric Bristow (5times champion of the world) bankrolled him as he knew he was brilliant...you should read about their story.
I'm really good at hitting doubles when I've had loads to drink ... the whole dartboard is doubled and, if I drink a bit more, it trebles ... and then I blackout
You need to check out the "greatest leg of darts ever" in the 2023 world championship final between Michael van gerwin and Michael Smith. You won't believe your eyes!
@@jacklynch7802nobody will win 16 world titles and 15 world match plays. Littler is a great talent but he's not winning the amount taylor did. Nobody is getting close to that. People said the same thing you just did about van gerwen and he's not getting close to taylors records either.
Danny Lauby is one of Americas best players and he plays in my local ADC Vault comps, in Oxfordshire (England) I know him pretty well. Just recently got his professional tour card so might be a player for you’s ta look out for.
i played darts for my local pub team for 5 years we won the area finals twice but i only scored 180 3 times in all the matches in game play the nerves get you
I've been getting back into darts. Just in my house. I'll put on some TV shows and I'll spend a few hours throwing darts. I'm no where near as good as those players, obviously. I am better than average and I when I played for the local pub I was one of the best players in the team. But.... I've never ever got a 180. I came really close yesterday. On my first 3 darts of the day I hit two treble twenties and I got really excited and instead of just throwing the 3rd dart right away I kinda took a beat and then threw the last dart and I hit a treble 18. It's still a great score but I really wanted my first 180. In the first clip you see Phil get a 158 finish. That's my highest finish. I urge you to get a dartboard in your house. They are not expensive and you dont even need another person. You can just play it on your own. You'll be surprised at how far you walk just going to and from the board.
If high school kids can get a PE credit for going bowling, they should be able to get a credit for playing darts for an hour or two. That would level the playing field with the jocks a little bit.
Luke Littler!!!! Luke Littler!!!! Luke Littler!!!! Luke Littler!!!! Luke Littler!!!! Check this kid out. You can’t buy a dart board in the UK at the minute due to the Luke Littler effect!!! (Yes it really is called that!!!
I played darts every day I could from age if 13 to age of 30, love the game. Unfortunately I never won a match or leg or set or game in my life. What can I say…..
And, as you say, it's an every person game. Male or female, old or young, there's even events for people wheelchairs. And, as mentioned in my other comment, you can get a reasonably good dartboard and some darts for less than $50 and play it at home on your own. I got a pretty good dartboard with a surround to protect the wall and some pretty decent tungsten darts and it cost me about £70, which is about $100. But you don't need to buy the ones I bought. I went for a more expensive board and darts because I am a darts player and I new I was going to be getting back into playing so I chose something I wanted to last a me a few years. But if you're starting out then there's nothing wrong with getting the cheaper versions. Then if you're enjoying it you can then upgrade your board. In fact if there is some bars near you that have a dartboard talk to the owner as they've probably got a few old dartboards in the cellar that they will give you. They are quite heave and cumbersome to just put in the trash so you have to take it to the tip or the recycling centre yourself. So they probably buy a new one and just put the old one in the cellar and they'll be perfectly fine for playing on at home. But the pubs might have a darts team that the play other pub teams so the owner of the bar doesn't want the other pub teams playing on a tatty board so they change it every couple of seasons.
Great video guys and loving the dart reactions! I think you'll appreciate it even more if you guys give it a go, film a match between yourselves and you'll see exactly how hard it is! Would be great, and also a long video if you do 501 😂😂
Tbh, your dart reactions are some of your best reactions!... Especially now you have the context! You both need to go to the darts...uses to be a big event in the States, but sadly no more.
The real story is the greatest of all time before Taylor was Eric Bristow - Bristow was suffering from 'dartitsis' darts version of the yips in golf where he coulldn't release the darts when he wanted - he asked for someone to practice with and Taylor turned up - Bristow then sponsored Taylor into his first tournaments - and the rest is history
I really miss hearing Sid Waddell commentaries, he was another that cant be replaced.
Phil the GOAT of darts, Sid the GOAT of commentators!
yep, i can't believe my goggling bins 😂@@tsrgoinc
Put your grannie in a roomie, send your daddy to the steamy, grab some biscuits and a drappy - this darts match will make you... HAPPY!.
I agree and I’ve only just begun to get a handle on what darts it's all about.

True
The introduction of Phil has me in tears. He will always be the absolute greatest of all time.
I was there for the two 9 darters the crowd went mental what a night 👏👏
Was always the family's favorite player and his mentor Eric Bristow

11:43 “i love how hes so humble”

Tbf . He's the best ever and he knows it
In the Netherlands, football is huge, but darts is the biggest sport there now.
I meet a few Dutchies through my job and the first question I ask them is: "RvB or MvG?" - all of them know exactly what I mean and have their answer. Gotta respect that.
To see the atmosphere you guys should watch the PDCs compilation of walk ons
Been trying sooooo hard to get the guys to watch these!!!!
Definitely!
I always liked Bobby George entrances!,

Phil is a Legend of the ockey. There's a New great prospect of Darts now named Luke Littler from Warrington.
109.5 3-dart average in a race to 7 - set play! That's insane! The man was unplayable at times in his career, and dominant throughout. What a legend.

Well Taylor found the solution ;)
Their head to heads are a piece of art, and sporting history.
Phil Taylor. The best player to ever pick up a dart.

Spencer, top man for stopping to talk to Nana(good boy-respect) always family first, great show lads we're glad you're getting into it✌️
That wasn't his first World Championship, his first was 5 years earlier in 1990.
Yes, against Bristow not harrington. Even the docu they watched showed that 🤣
You need to watch Phil Taylor vs Raymond Van Barneveld sudden death leg, 2007 or, Phil Taylor vs Mike Gregory sudden death leg 1992. The greatest finals, ever.
Yayeeee!
I’ve been waiting for more of your darts reactions 😄
“Thank you” “Thank you”
Sweet Spencer & Dan the Man

Yes! Continue the darts. My nan lived 3 doors down from the pub he owned in Maybank, Stoke on Trent. A lovely guy as well. Always looked out for her
Darts is a big deal in the UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and the Far East. Anywhere that can count really.
Eric Bristow had his pinky out.
Another amazing video. Love the fact you 'forgot' to edit the call from your gran. It's about time she was in a reaction!! 😂😂
That's the first time anyone has ever described Phil Taylor as humble!
Back in the day, snooker and darts players were allowed to drink whilst playing. Maybe check out the "not the nine o clock news" darts sketch. Probably one of the reasons they stopped drinking.
Phil Taylor the absolute goat. 16 time world champion including 8 in a row.
I love watching darts. I play every day and it's so hard to maintain concentration. How these champions do it in this environment is really special. We need American darters in the sport. Keep up this quality content please lads.

Ok, you asked what next. The darts quiz show called bullseye. It's iconic and a cultural phenomenon of British life. It also includes some classic sayings. You can't beat a bit of bully.
Do you remember that guy was on it and turned out he was a serial killer . So many odd people on that 😂
I used to cook bacon buttys for Phil when i worked in Portugal , great bloke he chucked darts in the Steveve Davis room !
Im Dave Chisnalls mate, my cousin and best mate are his practice partners
The dude playing him, Van Barneveld didn't do so bad himself, 5 times world champion, but Taylor's 16 titles will probably never be beaten
With the standard of darts nowadays, no one will come close to Taylor
as good as Phil is I don't think he ever won a speedboat or even got a bendy bully
I've never hit a 9 darter but I thinking playing James Wade would increase my chances
The guy that threw darts with his little finger up was Eric Bristow. He was a multiple world champion.
I remember when he got interviewed and the interviewer said when did you relize you were good at darts Phil, Phil said when I walked home from the fair with my arms full
The greatest sportsman of all time. Imagine the millions that play the game around the World and he topped the lot sixteen times. Unreal.
17:02 in this match was combined 19 times world champion on stage...taylor won his 14e and van Barneveld had 5 times world champion at that time
16 time world champion the next best has 5. Players were beaten just by his presence and aura. Absolute legend of British sport
LOVES THIS!! love the atmosphere at Ally Pally
Darts is proper working class game/sport/pastime.... and fuelled by beer
He did a 9 darter against Barney many years ago which won him a brand new car. He gave it away to a Dutch couple who were friends of his, who'd had the misfortune to be involved in an accident which destroyed their car. Phil thought it fitting to give them the car he won.

Look up Luke littler. Got to the world championship final this year aged 16
The 2nd 9 darter he hit against wade he threw 7 perfect darts in the next leg too

Darts is F**king epic !
Nice one fellas more please 👏🏻
Would be great, and also a long video if you do 501 😂😂
You should take a look at rocket Ronnie O'Sullivan (snooker) .
Phil is a really good guy too
Tbh, your dart reactions are some of your best reactions!... Especially now you have the context! You both need to go to the darts...uses to be a big event in the States, but sadly no more.
I've hit one 9 dater in my 52 years of life, admittedly more than some, and he hits 2 in one game, git! 🤣
Back in the day you used to smoke and have a cold pint of lager a pub game 🇬🇧👍
I was a youth England dart player, and I can't play without a few beers. Just can't throw it properly.
