    My friend used to fly these in the Luftwaffe. German but had a sense of humour, as his nickname of the side of his jet was ‘Snoopy’. He later became an instructor on them at Miramar and finished his career flying Tornado’s for 10 years. I love his stories…

    21:32 I'm always amused when landing at any airport and the entire ramp is populated with 247s and DC-6s, always makes me crack up. Sim Skunkworks really have outdone themselves with their 104 lineup! (even if there are only marginal differences) Really glad to see an aircraft often forgotten get the attention it deserves. It was a proud moment when I was finally able to tame the TF-104 and start flying some circuits up around Cold Lake Alberta, eventually flying from CFB Comox on Vancouver Island all the way to Gander Intl over six legs. definitely a milestone on my MSFS journey.

      Haha, it always frustrates me a little bit I have to say Wyatt. The B247 isn't so bad, but for a while every apron I visited was filled with Bucker Jungmann biplanes and they didn't even sit flush with the ground. It looked very unsightly and rather ridiculous - I have no idea why Asobo won't let us choose which aircraft display as AI. In the end I had to uninstall the addon for this reason alone.
      Sounds like you had rather a fun trip in the TF-104! I'd love to get a little more time in the aircraft myself (I did find a lovely RCAF TF-104 livery online and do have a video featuring that coming to the channel at some point), SSW did indeed create a lovely addon overall!

    With the TF104 I genuinely struggle to get the thing off the ground in one piece. I also struggled with the rather hacked together external app to set up tanks and fuel. This looks like a much nicer implementation.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад

      Haha, the F-104 is indeed a bit of a tricky beast to get airborne. I find the ground handling a little bit funky - it's very easily to get the aircraft into a left-right oscillation around the nosewheel, especially on landing (maybe that's somewhat true to life though, with the very narrow undercarriage).
      The kneeboard is definitely a far better setup, quicker and less fiddly. It's a shame that the radar app still needs to be started externally though.

      On the subject of ground handling, have you had to do anything in particular to get the beast to actually taxi?
      My controls are set up fine as they work in other default and 3rd party models, this one however can only be steered through differential braking... which is less than effective given the narrow track main gear.
      I've already had a reply from SSW which was less than helpful: "unable to reproduce".

  • @JIMJAMSC

    My favorite aircraft although dumbed down for MSFS. There was a version iirc for FSX that you had to fly by the numbers.
    Just like the real 104 the POH procedure for a stall was ejection. If you exceeded a certain aoa on takeoff the fuse blocked the tail resulting in a good chance of loss of control. Landing with less than 87% close to the ground was deadly. The SSW 104 is some what challenging and a blast.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад

      Hi JimJam,
      Oh right, I wasn’t aware such an aircraft existed in FSX, must’ve been great! The SSW version isn’t quite up there but as you say, it provides a nice challenge and is tricky enough to fly, that the aircraft often still feels like it wants to bite you.
      The F104 is an awesome machine and I think Sim Skunk Works have done it justice for the most part (a few bugs seems to have crept in due to updates, I hope the team pick up the pace in fixing them).

    - will the TF104 be updated with the insim kneeboard table ?

      Hi Adr1, apologies for the slow reply.
      It's great to hear that the functionality of the TF-104 has now been updated. I knew it would only be a matter of time, but I wasn't expecting it to be so quick!
      I didn't realise that the Marketplace version had some restrictions vs the 3rd party version, but I can see why SSW would have had to do that. Unfortunately I would expect all of the same restrictions would apply with the F-104 (though that is only speculation on my part).
      Cheers and all the best! : )

  • @rolanddutton4723
    @rolanddutton4723 2 года назад +1

    I echo your thoughts 100%. It would be nice if SSW did something for TF-104 owners. At the very least bring the improvements across to the two-seater.
    It looks like an excellent product though (the TF-104 is easily my favourite fast jet in MSFS).

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад +1

      I expect / believe that the improvements will be brought across to the TF-104 Roland (the G-91 has a kneeboard as well now).
      It’s not a massive deal at the end of the day, but it hardly feels like a big “thank you”; supporting SSW in their earlier efforts and yet paying £10 more for an almost identical product - that everyone else can now essentially come along and pick up cheaper. I think I know why SSW weren’t really able to offer a discount though, but still. . .
      The TF-104 will be awesome if / when MSFS gets shared cockpit support. Until then though, the F-104 would probably have been all I really needed; most MSFS devs seem to be very adept at ordering their product releases in reverse order of people’s preferences though (I guess you can’t blame them on that one ; )
      As you say, either way it’s still an excellent offering; the Hawk is still my number 1 I think - does that count as “fast”? : P

    👍👍 Another great video ItBS! Gotta admit the svelte sexy Starfighter is one of my all-time favorite go-fast jets. When I was young I remember it looked so unbelievably futuristic! [Yep, I believe Christopher Columbus was just a young cabin boy at that time. Haha!]
    Anyway, this Widowmaker looks awesome ...but... the engine sounds really need work. It truly does not sound anything like the early version General Electric J-79 engine, with its trademark moaning/wailing cacophony that varied in pitch from low to mid-range throttle settings. Did I mention LOUD?!

      The sounds of the addon are a bit of a shame. Not awful by any means, but a bit of a missed opportunity. I had hypothesised during my review of the TF-104, that SSW would probably update the sounds at a later date (as the did with the G-91), but sadly such an update is yet to be forthcoming. The sounds are actually quite loud by default to be fair, but I toned things down, so as not to deafen everyone haha.

Before I had no problem going supersonic in level flight now the best move seems to be climbing to at least FL250, achieve at least 0.9 mach and nose over to -20 degrees. She'll go supersonic at just a touch less than FL200, then just wait until about 1.05 mach, slowly let the nose come up and do not get to 0 degrees until 1.1 mach. After she gets to 1.1 mach things start happening fairly quickly but I'm supersonic and can pursue whatever profile I want to test.

      Haha, well likewise Ramy; I’m a big fan of the F-104, so don’t mind owning both. The autopilot is nice to have on the F variant (didn’t realise it had more fuel, but that makes sense with the extra room / reduced weight) and I like the TF variant because you can get some great shots from the rear-cockpit (+ hopefully one day we’ll get shared cockpit functionality in the sim).

    I really don't understand why this is the only plane I have purchased that I have trouble with. The throttle kills itself sometimes and the plane tries to fall out of the sky with the rate of recovery around 70%of the time. Top speed is also unachievable in my experiences

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад +1

      Hi ProStreet,
      Unfortunately a previous sim update seems to have broken a few things on the F-104 (and the devs don't seem to be very quick to fix things up). I haven't had any throttle issues that I recall, but the afterburner seems to cut out at 10,000ft, which is probably why you aren't reaching max speed etc. The aircraft is perhaps falling out of the sky, because of the throttle issue you're having; with the flaps extended, air is actually taken from the engine and "blown" over the wings to increase lift. If the engine rpm drops below about 84%, this can cause a wing to lose lift and as a result, cause a violent wing drop. Does that sound like what you're experiencing?
      Unfortunately we are waiting on Sim Skunk Works to fix up the F-104, but everything seems to have gone very quiet on their end. . .
      I hope that clarifies things a little. All the best!

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations thank u so much for the response and clarity. That sounds like it quite possibly could be a good part of the problem. My throttle issue seems to mostly result in losing the engines all together. I can sometimes do a quick restart but unfortunately end up losing the plane the other times. I love so much about the plane that it sucks that it has these issues. I hope something is done soon.
      Once again... Thank u so much for the info and response 💯 💪

      If you’re running the F-104, it should just be a case of selecting the tip tanks via the tablet (as loosely outlined in the video). If you’re running the TF-104, you’ll need to find the “LadySetup.exe” and install the tip tanks from there - you can find the program in your TF-104 folder (located inside your sim community folder).

      Hi YK,

      FYI there is a F-104G mod available for DCS. Not as good as having an official module for it, but it's the next best thing until someone decides to make one. And with the number of currently in-dev Cold War aircraft, I'm sure someone will tackle the Starfighter at some point.

    Another great video and flight 👍🏻I hope MSFS fighter add-ons get to the level of DCS at some point. Things like the afterburner animations of both the burner and nozzle movements tend to leave a lot to be desired in pretty much all add-ons at the moment; it would be interesting to know if this is a limitation of the SDK and if this will improve over time. It is slightly annoying as I find I want to port all my DCS modules in to the MSFS environment.

      I know exactly what you mean - better yet, import the MSFS world into DCS haha. DCS has the best flight modelling of an sim I’ve tried (for the most part) and most of the modules are absolute masterpieces. I often find myself wishing I could take the Viggen around the Mach Loop, or take in the sights of MSFS in the Huey etc. I would say that the Just Flight Hawk is about on a par with most DCS modules, albeit the flight model still has a few deficiencies owning to MSFS; but yes, it would be nice to have a more rounded experience with these sorts of aircraft in the sim.

    Lovely video! I am concerned by the "Bobbing" when you bank? This "BOBBING" I have seen in high speed turns, actually the MB339...not a good sim!(YUK) But with a tiny wing load, in this jet, I would expect a low effect on aileron and a "mushing" (soft turn) rather than a hysterical "Bobbing" that I see in your video. Its "Hysterical" because I can see this on my monitor! If I was in the cockpit i would have my balls jolted and get a really stiff neck! ! The KING of low level was the TONKA Tornado for non RAF Types or perhaps the HARRIER GR3...Ohhh Harrier jockeys... a smoooooth ride...You would hear! I never expect to see this in MSFS...No one has a clue? ....unless someone knows the RAF SIm a t Leuchars and can simulate fast jet low level.....DREAM ON!!!!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад +1

      Thanks David!
      Haha, well that could just be my flying. . . : P
      But yeah, the bobbing seems to be a prolific problem in MSFS. I'm no expert in flight modelling, but I gather at least some of the aerodynamics issues are caused by the sim not taking into account disrupted airflow over the tail surfaces (they behave 100% efficiently, hence the over-sensitivity). I suppose that may (hopefully) change as the sim moves more towards CFD (our first example arriving with SU9).
      MSFS is no fast jet sim though and these sorts of addons are really just a bit of fun in my eyes (The Hawk is the only fast jet that offers an elevated experience I would say). DCS is still the best place to be if one is looking for a decent flight model (and addon).
      That sim at Leuchars sounds like fun though! I guess they aren't going to let me have a "play" though : / haha.
