At 73 y.o., I have had the privilege of watching so many great middle- and long-distance runners. I ran middle distance in the late 60s-early 70s on the college level. I heap praise on both of these young athletes. My own impression is that they are both stellar, however, the one issue that seems to plague Valby, is her health. Her personality also appears more anxious than Tuohy, and that can take its toll on a distance runner. I also believe they will both struggle to sustain their extraordinary success at the professional level.

Brilliant commentary; the best I have seen. You put you finger right on it. As hard as it is to make the transition from high school phenom to D1 top two or three, it looks like it's even harder to survive the transition to pro. I haven't done any research but that must be true. KT is a team animal. Look, she's remaining in Raleigh to train with her new pro coach, Coach Henes. Good move. She's staying in Raleigh to be able to train, I imagine (no proof) by pre-arrangement to use State's world class facilities. She's got her mainstay, Jake, there. All well and good.Apparently, she's making arrangements to go to Flagstaff regularly for altitude training with her friends Elly Henes and Hannah Steelman. This looks like a plan, and a support system.

I'm going to cop out and say that they are pretty even. Valby has had an incredible best-ever few months, and may have revolutionized how we think about training. Still, I think people make too much of Tuohy's latest results. That's just running. If Valby suddenly has a poor stretch do we have to flip flop about who's better again? We need to see what they do as pros.

Valby trains on the Cybex Arc trainer, not the elliptical anymore. There is a recent video where she talks about that, titled "Parker Valby After Winning The 2023 NCAA Cross Country Title, 18:55 For 6K."

It is all a matter of when each girl comes into her own. Valby took a little while longer, Toughy jumped on it from the beginning. So, each got their own when it was time. In the long run, the difference between the two will become slight, if noticeable. That's why we have collegiate sports. Those who excel go to the pros. Those who were having a great time got what they wanted from college accomplishments. It's all very, very good.

Both runners have tapped into their potential nicely. Their success mostly comes from focused training, but their performances are to the point where people frequently comment that they are great natural talents. Both have excellent coaches, but I would give the slight edge to Valby.

Monson 14:19 born 1998, Henes 14:47 born 1998 Touhy 15:03 born 2002 as Henes and Tuohy likely had similar training in college and Tuohy performed better, Touhy's potential is likely closer to Monson. Also while she needed surgery after high school she has been fit to run even with a heavy load of races for many years making it likely she can have a long career with peak between 24-28 yrs. Valby 14:56 (indoors on hot track) ?? born 2001-2003 ? training to avoid stress on lower body due to past injuries potential is less predictable, likely under the current Olympic standard of 14:50 is possible but whether her body can hold up and her lack of a closing finish raises (something left in the tank) if she can sustain the training and miles for the next 8 years to be globally within the top 10 like Monson

Valby is just 10 seconds away from being a National caliber 5k runner and 30 seconds away from being international caliber. Katelyn will beat anyone with her same level of natural talent because of her competitiveness, but she will have to develop her talent to run a 14:45 or 4 flat. It will be a big challenge for her but she is always up for a challenge.

Please note: there is no such thing as "Pro grade". There is simply Open Grade Women, meaning aged 20 and over. On that basis, anyone who is good/fast enough, can win Open Grade races. Some of those races are big time events and attract prize money. Anyone can win (if good enough)
The issue is that both Tuohy and Valby have been racing in a level that is much lower than Open Grade, the USA College league. No other Countries run College/University programs so there is no comparison. The others, world wide, all just compete in Open Grade races.
Yes, some Corporates sponsor Clubs that pay expenses and even a regular payment for an invited athlete. They put them under contract, thus making them "Professional". But they compete in Open Grade races. Often a Meet organisor will Invite chosen Open Grade runners to their event. So they only invite the "best". Some are under-contract professionals but most are not!
If both Valby and Tuohy keep improving, in around 3-4 years they will get to the top group of Open Class runners in the World. Possibly around time of the 2028 Olympics. Until then, they are B level runners, at best. eg. WR for 5000m is 14.0.2 so top runners are now looking to break 14 minutes. Valby ran 14.56 and KT has yet to break 15 min. The TOP USA runners clock in at 14.23 and 14.26. See the difference? Improvement by almost a minute is required, minimum. But I believe they can do it! The next 4 years will be interesting. Cheers.

Parker Valby is the better runner. Parker has more talent and is more athletic. Parker trains and works harder. Parker is also able to run better in harsh conditions such as the cold and rain or high heat and humidity. Parker is both mentally and physically tougher.
To answer the question - who's better? Parker Valby is better.

@@anderstauschristensen9184 It was extremely windy and raining. Definitely tough conditions by any standard. And she definitely hasn’t run better times in the longer distances. Tuohy has better times in the shorter distances (1500, mile, 3k), but Parker has barely run any of those distances in college. She has mainly focused on the 5k where she just broke the collegiate record that was previously Tuohy’s. In cross country she has way better times, as she has gone under 19 minutes in 6k multiple times across multiple seasons, whereas Tuohy has never run below 19. She also has the record for the fastest time in an ncaa championship 6k, when she ran 18:55 en route to a national championship this year.
Head to head wins is 3-2 in favor of Tuohy by my count. One of the wins by Tuohy was in a 5k prelim that didn’t mean much. And Tuohy ultimately dropped out of the 5k final at nationals that year which Valby went on to win.

or she might do better against pros when someone else is setting pace for most of the race. Leading isn't an advantage, the lead runner breaks the wind. The aerodynamics are slight, maybe 1%, but at the world class level, 1% matters.

For me Tuohy is the better runner. She ran down Valby earlier in the year bridging a 50m lead and made Valby look ordinary. Valby's recent win was impressive but Tuohy was clearly poorly or below par in some way. Added to this, Tuohy is down the gym and has increased her core strength. Valby looks fragile by comparison. I think Katelyn will be back in the lead soon

    • @S0ulinth3machin3
      @S0ulinth3machin3 6 месяцев назад

the fragile look (small bones) is an advantage in long distance running. Check out the look of the world class pros. Bigger power to weight ratio. It is true that the fragility can be an issue with injuries, but Valby seems to have figured that out with training on machines. It's a very intelligent approach. Too bad the machine option wasn't available for Mary Decker. She was always injured.
