I really loved the addition of Jeremy Renner to the cast. One of my favorite scene was the car into the river scene and how Renner's character kept asking all those questions like "the flare? How'd you know that was gonna work?" and then the whole contact lens scene. I've been a fan of his since I saw him in a film about Dahmer and he killed it in 28 Weeks Later... Oh, and wasn't he in some kind of super hero movie?

You're so right about that word _tension_. It pretty much describes why I fell in love with MI in the first place and why MI3 felt too much of an action pack, and why this one was better than that in terms of atmosphere and character buildup. Too bad the villains are very cardboard cutouts and really just walking around "being the bad guy" instead of having some depth. Maybe the French assassin had a little character because she showed emotion but even then she was just fighting, doing her job, perhaps a little bloodlustily, but still.

He wasn’t cookie cutter for me……he’s an insane man who thinks nuclear war will make the world stronger…sure we’ve seen it before but not in this franchise……he’s definitely not the worst villain that goes to MI 2……..I think Solomon Lane is a much more complicated character and it’s a tie between Jon Voights “Jim Phelps or Henry Cavills “August Walker” for near villain of the franchise so far

TRUE STORY: a few days after Guardians came out, a good friend of mine sent me a drawing of Drax slapping his hands together as if he was catching a fly, and it was the word "METAPHOR". His career was really in a fallow period to the extent that when Top Gun 2 was planned around this time Maverick was only going to be a supporting character/cameo.
Additionally, Cruise had to take a paycut for this movie and they were considering making him the new IMF secretary and handing the series over to Jeremey Renner.
He certainly turned things around massively!

Of course, when this film came out I gushed over it completely and was unwilling to see any flaws, but the villain is weak and some things are a little too convenient. I saw this in theaters with my sisters; they were so nervous during the tower scene that they chewed their fingernails off!
I think it's interesting that you mention that there's a sense of tension in the film, or that the film isn't just action scene after action scene because Brad Bird had a similar approach with the Incredibles, which showcases a lot of tension and the superheroes sneaking around instead of racing from one action scene to the next with nothing in between.

  • @Justmyhandle

I'd enjoy a Mission Impossible (or Bond) film with Benedict Cumberbatch as the main antagonist, both intellectually and physically. I'm not suggesting he be a superhuman killing machine like Khan, but it would be nice to give him combat and espionage skills equal or superior to Ethan's. This should be a villain he can't beat head on, the past generation's best of the best, who challenges everything Ethan believes in. Perhaps he could be a former IMF agent thought to have been killed alongside his family decades ago on orders from Phelps, which Ethan discovers was a frame up, leading Benedict to seek vengeance by exposing the IMF's greatest secrets to the public at any cost to innocents. He'd make Ethan question whether the IMF has caused more problems than it's solved, since corruption always seems to be a part of it. I would have Ethan ultimately retire as a field agent and lead a new IMF with better values, creating new squads mentored by former teammates. That would be a good conclusion to the saga.

I think you hit the nail on the head for something much larger than just this movie. For the entire franchise (and I include the tv show, I love the first season of the original show) the villain is very rarely a human. What makes Mission Impossible so amazing is that the villain is, well, the impossibility of the mission. The best scenes in the franchise all happen when something goes wrong, or comes very close to going wrong. This is why I don't think you need fleshed out human villains for this franchise. It's ok if they're two dimensional, because we aren't in the theater to watch the story of two characters fighting. We're more in theater to watch people who are very good at their job be very good at their job in very extreme situations.

I was working on Top 20 of the decade list so far, but yeah this made it without question. This movie is so good, very crisp, very well put together. It does remind of Avengers in that sense but not only is this more believable. It's just more thrilling and more suspenseful. The opening sequence is one of my favorites ever. I love that their resources are scarce. I love seeing their mistakes and for something so rare in action movies, their mistakes have consequences. And they fail more times in this than succeeding, sometimes on purpose. They don't have the best team. They don't know each other. No one is introduced even, hardly any backstory and you still love these characters. The prison sequence and introducing what the mission is was all that was needed and mainly because they're all good at their job and they're all really likable people and somehow work best when together.
Tom Cruise basically has a concussion for the last half of the movie lol - the amount of times he gets hit and falls and gets back up, you feel that for sure. The parking lot fight, he is done. He does not want to do this anymore lol. Jeremy Renner, who is my fav actor, had my fav moment where he pumps himself up to jump off the ledge. Great movie.

I don't think that it's nitpicking to point out that the film peaks too early. Even as a non-critic that is my main complaint about the movie and something I really noticed. It is such a spectacular scene that everything that follows feels kind of mediocre in comparison, although in any other movie the last act would have been really great. But as you pointed out that just speaks to the strength of the Burj Khalifa sequence and overall I think Ghost protocol was a really good movie!

As a swede, i dont think they gave Michael Nyqvist enough to do. For the first tine in maybe forever, a swede is a bad guy. That is just cool. He should have had more to do.

This film absolutely delivers in every way. The only not picks I can give it were the nuclear codes plot is a little overused, and the villain had no meat to him. He was an inserted Bad guy and henchmen.
Other than those two small gripes this film was shot to perfection. Every frame was interesting. Masterclass in direction. The acting was top notch. The cinematography was well done. Editing was solid. Screenplay was tense and I loved it. score and queues worked seamlessly. Sound, CosHair Mkup par for the course. Set Design was stellar. Last but not friggin least the SpFX and cgi were used to perfection. Anyone wanting to know how to film stunts, explosions, and get the most out of cgi should watch every scene by itself and study it. The film starts and the stakes keep rising until they win.
    1. Prologue with the eye scanner to get the codes. A+
    2. Breaking out Russian prison/mission briefing A+
    3. Kremlin Infiltration A+
    4. Hospital Zip line/IMF debriefing/waterway escape A
    5. Train car Recon/ mission prep A
    6. Burj Khalifa all scenes A+
    7. Dubai Sandstorm chase A+
    8. Agent Brandt's past/Ethans deal with Russains A
    9. Mumbai extraction A+
    10. Mumbai car chase A
    11. Mumbai tv station/motion parking garage A+
Just writing this is keeping me at the edge of my seat.
A superb film even after seeing the latest installment, Fallout, I believe Ghost Protocol is still top honors.
As of now my ranking of this action packed franchise is
    1. Ghost Protocol
    2. MI-1
    3. Fallout
    4. Rogue Nation
    5. MI-3
    6. MI-2

If anyone actually still bothers to read this, I’m probably gonna get alot of hate for it but come on! I How could anyone find that MI:4 has „more“ suspension than MI:3?
    Let me recap...
    MI:3 Opening scene
Ethan screams in pain, he‘s strapped to a chair, bleeding, sweating, his eyes are bloodshot and an absolutely relentless villain hold‘s a gun to a womans head (which one can only assume has a romantic relationship to ethan). The main character who usually has a solution for everything is alone, desperate and completely helpless to the point where he starts crying.
And then to top it all off... the villain shoots the woman in the head.
    MI:4 Opening scene
Some random guy, who the viewer has absolutely no connection to runs around the streets of budapest with a smirk on his face that seems like he can‘t hide his excitement about actually having a role in a mission impossible movie and gets shot because he‘s too busy with his phone instead of watching the one and only person in the alley walking straight at him. Ethan breaks another random guy out of jail. No harm done. Everyone is safe.
On what planet is that suspenseful?! 🤨

Once I get done with the other 4 Mission movies I’ll be able to have a legitimate ranking of these film but for now this movie Ghost Protocol is by far my favourite one of the series, with 3 being last just cause Rogue Nations was something else. So my current ranking is
    No.1 Ghost Protocol, No.2 Rogue Nations and No.3 M.I 3.

The change in status in Ethan's wife came from Christopher McQuarrie in his un-credited re-write, a thread he picked up later and fleshed out later for Fallout.

A very good review. I too agree with the villian, such a great actor playing such an under-developed character. Tom Cruise maybe the star of the film, but Pegg's Benji makes this film, the guy is fantastic and the humour is delivered at the right moments. Paula Patton may have a back story, but she's redundant. The only thing I remember of her character in this film is her fight with Lea Sedoux's assasin (speaking of which, when I first saw this film, I cheered that Sedoux finally got to challange her miserable cow persona into a cold hearted assassin)
I first saw this film in IMAX on Boxing Day, and I remember how some of the audience complained about feeling quesy at the Dubai sequences. They are a highlight of this film and are brilliant in their own right. I too agree that this film tries to go back to suspence of the first one and it tries brilliantly, although it'll never reach it's heights. Also it was great seeing Max's henchman from the first film guiding Ethan Hunt to the Russian's, I love those little reference tidbits.
When I first saw the ending of this film with Hunt walking away into a puff of smoke, I really thought this was his farewell moment, and it would have been a great farewell moment. But I was wrong.

Not sure about most of those nitpicky things. However, I agree with the villain being a bit weak and his end seemed a little underwhelming but all in all, it's a great action movie! I didn't quite think that the seduction sequence was poorly placed. The movie needed to deescalate a bit to build up that confrontation in the parking garage and the urgent rush to override the bomb's detonation. I think it flowed damn near perfectly. Can't wait till Rogue Nation and hope they can keep this franchise alive because I really enjoy it so.

Chris Stuckmann Hey Chris I'm a big fan of your work, and I just wanted to ask you if you could watch the TV Show Hannibal and maybe review it. It's a really great show and it's a shame it's not going to continue on air. I think that you would like it and I think that all Hannibal fans out there would appreciate if you did a review of the show because you have lots of fans, and maybe with your influence a lot more people would see it and like it, and maybe we could get more Hannibal in the future. If you read this thanks for reading all of it, and just so you know you have lots of fans in the Dominican Republic.

And your point about the movie peaking halfway through the film, I guess that is what happens when the makers create a movie around the idea of that intense climb up and down the tower in Dubai.
My ranking of the series is :
    1. Mission Impossible (the original is the best for me)
    2. Mission Impossible 3
    3. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (though I say it is tied with MI3)
    4. Mission Impossible 2
