I hate big business bullies. "Were gonna pick on a RUclipsr when they use A TRAILER we supplied to the public." No sense at all. Anyways, Great video Chris keep on keeping on!
I saw this in the theatre, and to be honest, I hated it because it gave an F U to the fans of the show. The show was all about the team. This movie made Jim Phelps the bad guy and killed off his team. I didn't watch another MI movie until MI4.
Cruise is just a phenomenal action actor. His willingness to go that extra mile to get some impossible shots, it's really admirable. On top of that, you don't really have anyone who is as consistently good in everything he does, be it comedy or drama or whatever.
I really appreciate your comment, cruise his filmography is insane and I don't remember even 1 movie that wasn't good or great. Truly crazy how good it is.
The reason I've always heard for the sequels being more action-oriented (and thus so different from this one) was that a lot of people complained that the story in the first movie was too complicated to follow. But just like Chris says, what's wrong with that? Not overly complicated by any means, just more complex than the average movie-goer wants to deal with, I guess. You can tell MI2 made a concerted effort to keep things super simple.
I never realized Ethan Hunt hadn't fired a gun all movie. I don't think that can be said for any other movie in the series. Chris, your review was especially interesting when you noticed technical details of the film. I think this was your best review I've ever seen. I wish you had the same time for reflection on the newly released films as you did here. It be great to hear your thoughts on older films more often.
I think it's actually a cool idea if you re-review some movies like Inception. (with spoilers) I'd love to watch that Chris, please think about doing it!
I've been re-watching the films this week and I've got to say I agree with every point you made. I just found your channel and I think this is the second or so video I've watched. I'm really excited to hear you talk about the kind of shots and editing used in films. I love learning about that kind of thing.
Having Emilio Estevez in the beginning of the movie was a really smart move, at the time Emilio was a pretty big star and had his own following, so as the audience saw him they think, Oh this is an Emilio Estevez movie, then he dies suddenly and unceremoniously, it sets up the movie very well, it makes you feel that you don't know what to expect.....Kathryn Bigelow did the same thing casting Guy Pierce for the opening scene in the Hurt Locker..
Yeah, Barrymore in Scream is probably the best example.....I don't know if you watch True Detective, and ill try to be ambiguous with this so to keep it spoiler free...but in the season running now I thought they were doing the same thing at the end of the second or third episode, I was kinda bummed when I was wrong.
MCruben3000 I recently watched it because the only mission impossible movie I had watched was ghost protocol. I found it very hard to watch. Ghost protocol was definitely better. I had to put the subtitles on to follow the plot and I was still confused.
MovieAce I struggle to understand what people are saying so that made it hard to follow the plot. I didn't expect it to be a pure spy movie I thought it was an action movie. Im not saying the movie is bad. I had to read it on the internet to understand the plot.
I saw this movie in the theater twice. It's my favorite, alongside Ghost Protocol. It took me many viewings to finally catch on that Ethan was saying one thing while thinking another. Brilliant movie, and the whole CIA infiltration scene? Fantastic.
Before The Hateful Eight comes out you should rely do reviews for all of Quentin Tarantino's movies like you did before David Fincher´s Gone Girl came out.
This is still not only my favorite Mission Impossible film, but one of my favorite spy films, and one of my favorite action films. While the other MI movies are solid (except MI2) they have started to become a bit more typical summer blockbuster action in tone (although very well done), while this movie feels more espionage focused and smart. It's also the one movie of the franchise where Ethan isn't heralded like some kind of legend super spy by his peers. He's just another asset among other IMF team members, and not so seemingly invulnerable. Not to mention the movie is filmed spectacularly.
lasthavoc Yeah the first Mission Impossible is a pretty good espionage spy movie. It actually kind of reminds of the movie Enemy of the State with the tension, suspense and the protagonist on the run. MI1 is the best one in the series but I like the other ones except for the 2nd one. I hope that Rogue Nation will bring some of that suspense back with notably a better threat and villain, as the trailers, it seems like there's more at stake this time. Ghost Protocol was fun but it had a bland villain and I didn't get a true sense that things were at stake and true to it's title the Missions didn't feel like they were near to impossible for Ethan and company to do.
Yea, don't get me wrong, I like MI3 and Ghost Protocol. But while they're very well done summer blockbusters, they've become more about cool set pieces, and action, rather than than smart espionage thrillers supplemented by action. The entire first act of the original MI when they're in Prague, and being set up is one of the most riveting and perfect spy scenarios I've seen in a film. When Hunt asks Kittredge about the other IMF team and realized it was a mole hunt, I immediately wanted to watch that entire scene again to spot the other agents and see figure out what actually happened. It's a thinking audience's action film. But the sequels still great movies regardless.
Definitely. If you're going to make a summer blockbuster film MI is a franchise that typically stands apart from the rest as far as story, action, and effects.
I FREAKING LOVE this movie! I can't believe i don't own it! It is seriously one of my favorite movies of all time. Thanks for the awesome review and refresher on a truly timeless movie.
It's been nearly 20 years since Mission:Impossible was first released, and it's still my favourite one (so far) The film is a great espionage thriller that has utilizes traditional cold war spy thriller aesthetics and tries to update them to the post cold war world of confusion, betrayel, and loss. The set pieces are brilliant, with the stand out being in the breaking into the CIA vault, which pays homage to the quiet, suspence filled heist scenes of French crime thrillers such as Jules Dassin's Rififi and Jean Pierre Melville's The Red Circle. Rhames was born to play Luther, just like Cruise was born to play Hunt. With that exception the film's other characters get little to do as shown in the beginning of the film, Emilio Estevez and Kristin Scott Thomas being killed off so earlier on, whilst Jean Reno (then fresh from his starring role in Leon) just smirks, grins and behaves like a Frenchman. Overall an exciting spy yarn that came out just at the right time (The film was released a few months after Goldeneye, which kind of brought back a re-interest in 007 and the spy genre in general) The film is fantastic, however despite being based on the TV series, I actually found it to be far removed from the show. The plan and the mission are sorted out in twenty odd minutes, and we are instead left with the aftermath. In fact the film that really tries to follow the structure of the tv show was Inception. Just look at that film, the mission/offer, the recruiting of a team, the planning, the doubt, the mission, things not going according to plan. Sure Mission Impossible never used dream sharing, but the structure of the tv show really shows in Inception.
My dad took me to see this when it premiered, we were in San Jose, Ca where I'm from. I never watched any of the Mission Impossible series but my dad did and loved them. So this meant a lot to him. Me on the other hand, just knew it was a new action movie based on a show with Tom Cruise and it looked good. Til this day, it's one of three films that I got to experience and by the end my heart stopped. It was a complicated film for me at the time, I was 11 and knew nothing of the show but holy shit. What an amazing movie. And now one of my favorite films and series of films. Red light, green light....explosion....Ethan flies towards the train and grabs on...then the helicopter explodes and Leon The Professional is done for...Ethan sees the helicopter coming at him and that blade stops right in front of his throat....still gives me chills...I love it. Absolutely love it! I've never at the time seen anything like that on the big screen. I'm so glad I got to share that experience with my dad.
I watched it yesterday for the first time. Clearly, I've been missing out all these years. It is an amazing movie. I was socked to find out that it was released the year I was born. And not just because I didn't know it was that old, but also because its very well made, very realistic. Very smart too. I understood the part about quoting the Bible too (not sure if I'm right, though) Max said that Job wasn't known to quote it in his letters. Never said anything about him not quoting it at all. He clearly did know the Bible well because... he got his name from somewhere, right?
@@IdiocyShow um coz it IS the film franchise. If this film was not regarded by audiences as good there would be no franchise. Just because people like to talk about the subsequent films more doesn't make the first one underrated. Almost no one talks about the derpier 1st Fast and Furious movie, doesn't mean it's underrated.
I have the fourth film as my overall favorite with M:I 1 as my 2nd favorite. 2 and 3 are good too but the 2nd one is the one I liked the least. I enjoyed that Mission: Impossible was a smart action thriller that made you think.
Yeah I always defends this movie's difficulty. A lot of people thought this movie was too difficult to follow but I never understood that. The movie doesn't cheat, it gives you everything you need to know and it all fits... A very underrated movie. I think a lot of people didn't understand how smart this movie is.
After this review I really want to watch Mission: Impossible again, I haven't seen it in a while. I agree that it's one of the best in the series and a really good action movie
Still, he wouldn't need the bible with him, if he didn't quote in his E-Mails. That is the confusing part for me... And I think that's what Chris meant!?
@@shibby-not-availabletill doesn't make sense. If they were communicating over the phone. Why the need to email each other? If they were contacting by phone, she could have just verified with the real max if the email had come from him. Also quoting Bible verses on a phone call with an arms dealer is a bit odd.
Great review man. You should do more spoiler talks, where you actually analyze details like framing etc. I find that really interesting and it makes me appreciate the film much more.
Very good review, and I'm totally agree this is one of my favorite movies of all time. And I get pissed when people say MI4 is clearly the best, I'm not saying that is wrong but there should defiantly be a discussion about it. I love SUSPENSE in movies, especially in action that's a thing which are lacking in most action movies.
MovieAce I agree with you on the seeming consensus of MI4 being the best now, I would still probably go with the first one. The fourth one is exciting and entertaining, but I think the first one is just the best overall film in the series and is masterfully crafted with a lot of suspense and subtlety.
Good review man, I'm glad people like you actually do old movie reviews. I always look for video reviews for old movies but since youtube wasn't around nobody bothered making them. My love and understanding of films has increased since I started watching your videos, keep up the great job.
I was hoping you'd share your thoughts on Jim Phelps (the hero protagonist from the tv series) being the main villain. Especially since you mentioned that you watched the tv show.
I know everyone loves Ghost Protocol but for me..... this is the best Mission Impossible film. For all of the reasons you stated and more. I grew up watching the series with my family and when this came out it BLEW ME AWAY!!!!! It had all of the nostalgia from the series and it is truly a quintessential 90's action film that still holds up to this day. As always, keep up the amazing work!
Tom Cruise, Brian de Palma, U2’s Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen and the theme song created by Lalo Schifrin; what’s not to like!!! One of my favorite from this series (I will pinned it as number 1). I love that they kept the original series feel. Suspense to the max! Love it!
Ving Rhames as Luther was my favorite part of Mission Impossible. I loved everything about his character. I never even realized that Ethan never fired a bullet until you mentioned it. It's very interesting considering that 99% of spy and action thriller heroes spray bullets everywhere. It really shows the kind of spy Hunt was. A good spy's greatest weapon should be his mind, and Mission Impossible proved it here.
This movie was great in the fact that it was different than the action we've seen in the past 4 movies. It was smarter and calmer. A little too smart at times and that bad helicopter cgi at the end but being cruise's first stunt expert role and the general age of the movie, I excuse these things, more so than 90s films that aged poorly rather than well. Most people have probably seen the newer films before thinking about seeing this one and that just hurts it because nobody was expecting the franchise to go this way when the first film was the big deal. For what it is, Id say its excellent.
My thoughts exactly about the train sequence and the title theme; I only wish more movies still did this. It worked in the Tim Burton Batman movies, it worked in The Lord of the Rings trilogy (the Hobbiton theme when Sam carries Frodo in shadow of Mount Doom was GLORIOUS). I think a lot of film producers forget that films are performances, artistic works and not just approximations of real life. We respond to the structure of movies in just the same way as we do the structure of songs or of a novel.
This has always been one of my favorite movies. I really like Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, but I've always remembered the particular tension and suspense in this one, always makes it stand out.
I recently revisited all the MI films on my channel as well. It's a truly wonderful spy series that although stellar all around, get's better with each entry and I can't wait for the next entry. keep up the great work Chris, your a huge inspiration.
The only mission impossible movies I have seen is the third one and Ghost Protocal. Which leads me to a question. Which is better, the first one or the second one? I am gonna watch either for sure before the new one comes out. Not to review it, just for fun.
My biggest problem with this movie is the cinematography actually, it has a pixelated, dull image that almost looks like I'm watching it on VHS even though I have the blu ray.
When I think of this movie as a whole I think it's an average action film, but when it's dissected piece by piece I really admire this film even more. I saw this like 4-5 years ago and the only thing I didn't like about was(like Chris said) how the internet worked in that world, it truly was laughable.
I have a huge problem with the movie and the whole series: The Title. Mission impossible was never about one hero, it was about the team. If you see it removed from that, it is good. But mission Impossible? Not really
swanpride are you demented so is the movie , its all about the team how they all pull it off working together . stop watching movies if your that slow that you think it was about Ethan hunt only and sorry but watch the original TV show its about the team but the one agent was always at the fore front . some people just are not as smart as they think
***** It's actually my favourite one, too. The only one which feels right for me. (yeah, I am watching them, but more in a "I am bored oh, look what's on TV, let's see what they did this time around" manner)
I've seen this movie once a long time ago, what ruined it for me was the fact they turned Jim Phelps (the main character from the original series) into the traitor and main villain of the film, to me that's like turning either Captain Kirk or Spock villains in a Star Trek film.
Brian De Palma - the man just knows how to do suspense right: Carrie, Scarface, Wise Guys, Casualties of War, Carlito's Way, Blow Out, The Fury, Dressed to Kill, and of course, Mission: Impossible
Just started watching the mission impossible films with my dad and so far it’s a great start to the franchise for me. Looking forward to the other five!
Hello Chris, Eric Ryder here! Wonderful review on "Mission Impossible (1996)". I really thought this was a very well-executed spy, suspense flick. I have grown to like Ethan Hunt as a character here because he was more believable than James Bond and that he wasn't a slick, suave individual, but a man serious and dedicated to his missions as precarious as they were. I liked that he was a decent character and that he didn't engage in any intercourse with the female lead, Clare Phelps who's married to Jim Phelps. I liked that the film got its audience guessing and thinking rather than wowing. Sure it wasn't fast-paced or explosive, but subtle and smart. The final scenes between Hunt and Phelps was very intense and their conflict wasn't flashy, but it stayed real and I wanted the franchise to have stayed this way. I guess the action fans wanted thrills for the sequels which is still wonderful as this franchise progresses, but it loses its direction from going from a spy thriller to an action film without giving a real reason except that it changes directors from Brian De Palma to John Woo. It's still a great film and a great franchise 9/10 for me. Please come visit my channel with my review on "Mission Impossible". Feel free to leave a comment. Okay? Thank you.
Thanks for this review! It's nice to see you talking about something that isn't brand new (and isn't a hilariocity, either). What I really like about the "Mission: Impossible" franchise is that the movies are basically getting better (except that I (like most people) think that the first film is better than the second), which is rare, especially when there are more than three films in a series. "Ghost Protocol" was really good, and I think it will be difficult for "Rogue Nation" to be better, but I'm still hoping for that.
This is the best Mission Impossible movie amongst all ! I like it for all the same points that you mentioned. I have been seeing this movie many times without even skipping any particular scenes at all ! Every second is thrilling and Tom and the others are looking absolutely well balanced and perfect in their character roles and expressions ! It is THE BEST of the entire movie franchise ! Period ! 😎👍
Totally agree about the bible thing!! That has bugged me for years. Even the fact that the bible is in the safehouse is circumstantial at best in regards to proving Jim was behind it all
The passion you show in this video about this movie makes me want to watch it again. The first and only time I did was like ten years ago, and yep, I didn't undertand most of the plot..... I thought the movie just didn't make any sense.....
I think this is an amazing film. Wonderful cast and great intense scenes. When I was young I used to watch it a hundred times with my mom and I'm still not tired of it. It's quite impressive to create a timeless movie like that.
This is the review to end all reviews...MI is my favorite movie of them all. I would have given it an A+ if it weren't so complex for anyone in the movie theater to follow.
You're totally right on this 1st installment of "Mission Impossible". Very classy spy film !! I'm glad that you mentioned De Palma's film making skills.
I like the movie. It was a good suspense drama movie with great acting, great cinematography, well paste, and good moments that I rather see a great spy film. However, the exhibition like you said it was okay and the dialogue is way long. At least, I like few scenes where Hunt drops down in the restaurant, Hunt goes down quietly to get the NOC list, and Hunt fights over Phelps in the tunnel scene and the helicopter exploded with the red and green gum. I thought this gum is tasteless and its dangerous to use it without chewing at it. Mission: Impossible is a good spy espionage flick. Thumb Up.
When it came out I hated it for killing the whole IMF team at the beginning of the film. In retrospect it's a good action film. Funny how there are probably people who only know Tom Cruise as an action guy!!!
Well best to worst 1) Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol 2) Mission Impossible III 3) Mission Impossible I 4) Mission Impossible II Hopefully Rogue Nation is as good as Ghost Protocol ^_^ Mission Impossible 2 was by far the worst in the series and was just dumb except for the few action scenes they had.
I love this film. I remember seeing it when it came out and had to watch it twice before the penny dropped about the Bible and really let it sink in, by far my favourite mission impossible film, if you like suspense. This is the film for you
Saw the movie in theaters years ago, and the part with the security room is still for me, the best movie moment with how almost everyone in the theater, gasped at the part with the knife dropping. Still a recommended movie for me to this date, despite how so many people may bash it.
As always Chris a perfect review of a lost treasure. What I mean by that is most movie goers now are, like you said, spoon fed the plot and the direction in which the movie will go. Sure this is a "franchise movie" but, few people have seen the first. I've talked to many who've said, "that movie is corny and old." I disagree. This movie holds up well just like you said! You've said all that I've wanted to say about this movie so I won't repeat your words on my same views except I will say the rope scene is a staple in this franchise! Ghost rope scene had me almost gasping and I'm not afraid of heights! Again, great review Chris!
I enjoyed everything from the first M:I movie from its score to its videogame. I also LOVED to play it on the N64. I got to play it again as an adult and was able to beat it on the hardest difficulty. I had a lot of fun with it and plan on playing the PS1 version in the future. Another fun M:I game was on Lego Dimentions. The train sequence was almost as intense as the original scene. It was cool to hear how you enjoyed playing the N64 version. It doesn't get talked about a lot.
Hey Chris! I just wanted to say: Congrats, awesome review! I love this movie... the whole series, actually (yes, even the second one) And what I loved about the series is that No movie feels like a copy of the one before. All of them have different styles and different tones And I can enjoy them each individually. For instance, what you said about this one being one of your favorite action movies... I don't consider this one a "action" movie, to me it's more of a suspense heist/spy film. But that's just me. The second one on the other hand: very much an action movie. Keep it up dude, love your work.
Good review points. I first saw the movie in a theater in May 1996 at age 22, with almost no prior familiarity with the original tv series or the late '80s revival. My only major complaint is that the final bullet train action finale seems incongruous with the rest of the movie, as if Paramount dictated that it needed a big closing action sequence (which the trailer could also highlight) to make it look more like a summer action blockbuster than otherwise originally intended, or as most of the movie plays.
There are loads of people who've never read the Bible who can quote "Thou shalt not covet..." as it's so well known. It's perfectly plausible for a character to quote a very famous line and still need to look up other quotes.
Just watched it, lotta stuff I like. Great acting, great suspense, love the use of closeups and Dutch angles to heighten the intensity. My issues are that it didn’t ,are any sense for Jim to shoot that girl. Although there’s a lot of stuff that I love in the train scene, that explosion doesn’t look great. Last thing, maybe this is a weird complaint but Jim and the guy from Leon the proffesional at the end weren’t even really trying to hurt Ethan, they were really just trying to escape and Ethan blew them both up. If I have nit picky complaints I guess it’s because I thought everything else was so good. 8/10
I like that you mentioned the Bible loophole and for explaining it. But you make a very interesting point. If "Job" is not known for quoting scripture but Jim does, could Jim not be the 'real' Job? What if Emilio aka "Jack Nelson" was the 'real' Job? Jack was the resident 'tech guy' and 'explosives guy' not Ethan or Jim. Jack mentions the trip that Jim took and seemed more interested in his actions in Chicago than anyone else, including Claire. Was this an inside communication between Jack and Jim? Jim obviously didn't have time to set-up the team for failure, even if he had Krieger's help. What if Jim set-up Jack to die in the elevator so he could take the list/money instead of sharing it? One more 'what if', "What if Jack survived"? Okay, I'll admit it I'm an Emilio fan, and you have to admit everyone (that I know) liked his character in the movie. He was the "Hudson" of Mission Impossible.
Rig did you just say it’s cheesy and beautiful nooo mission impossible 2 is hands down the best mission impossible film ever and plus thandie Newton was great in that film
Hey Chris, I've been following you since your video about the things that are wrong with actions movies nowadays, and already got to what a lot of great movies based on your videos. So since your opinion is something that I really consider before/after watching a movie, could you say what you thought about Mr. Nobody? In case you watched of course.
Damn! Can't believe I ordered the same shirt that you have on Chris, I'm still waiting on mine a week after I ordered it though. If you ordered from Riptapparrel can you tell me what size you got? Coz I got a similar build to you but ordered a small.
I'm really excited for rouge nation. I wasn't planning on watching the other mission impossibles until now. Great review, haven't seen the first since it came out, going to watch it tonight. Thanks Chris!
Really great analytical review for the first Mission: Impossible film. I enjoyed it highly when I saw it in 90s and as a thriller its top notch. Looking forward to your review videos about the rest of the film franchise! :)
I had only seen this movie for the first time in my life last month and it was awesome. It does get confusing and you really have to pay attention but the scene where Ethan Hunt is hanging by a rope trying not to sound off the alarm was awesome best suspense ever.
Watched this after years, upscales well in 4K... helicopter scene at the end was fantastic in surround sound. Better then the majority of Netflix movies today
I hate big business bullies. "Were gonna pick on a RUclipsr when they use A TRAILER we supplied to the public." No sense at all. Anyways, Great video Chris keep on keeping on!
Right? Naah we dont want free publicity!

I loved this movie. I like that it’s more spy and espionage than action. I’d give it a 9.5/10
Very underrated

I really appreciate your comment, cruise his filmography is insane and I don't remember even 1 movie that wasn't good or great. Truly crazy how good it is.
This first one was my favorite of them all. Just had a different feel to it compared to the other films.
It's just the ending train chase that drags it down a bit
The reason I've always heard for the sequels being more action-oriented (and thus so different from this one) was that a lot of people complained that the story in the first movie was too complicated to follow. Nahhhh bro all are amazing but fallout is insane
@Trips You're doing Fallout a MASSIVE disservice by dismissing it as just a "popcorn flick".
Yeah i agree
I never realized Ethan Hunt hadn't fired a gun all movie. I don't think that can be said for any other movie in the series.
Chris, your review was especially interesting when you noticed technical details of the film. I think this was your best review I've ever seen. I wish you had the same time for reflection on the newly released films as you did here. It be great to hear your thoughts on older films more often.
Yeah I didn't noticed it either.
Correct, I remember reading that M:I-2 was the first movie that he ever actually fired a gun in.
I think it's actually a cool idea if you re-review some movies like Inception. (with spoilers) I'd love to watch that Chris, please think about doing it!
Yeah an in depth review of Inception would be great
Chris Kindler He should review goodfellas
Hey Chris, your profile pic is fucking awesome, and your idea for him re reviewing films sounds great. 👍👍👍
Steve Jobs YES!
Inception is simple, it doesn't need a deep review
I really enjoyed the old-school feel and look of this movie. The use of shadow and light in the nighttime street scenes was amazing.
I've been re-watching the films this week and I've got to say I agree with every point you made. I just found your channel and I think this is the second or so video I've watched. I'm really excited to hear you talk about the kind of shots and editing used in films. I love learning about that kind of thing.

All the posters had tom cruise it was always a cruise first movie. The surprise I'm guessing was how small Emilio was in it.
I think this movie is pretty underated. I know a lot of people who hate this movie.
MCruben3000 Agree. One of my favorites and hugely underrated.
Really? I know people hate 2 but 1? Nonetheless, very good movie
MCruben3000 I recently watched it because the only mission impossible movie I had watched was ghost protocol. I found it very hard to watch. Ghost protocol was definitely better. I had to put the subtitles on to follow the plot and I was still confused.
tanks gaming why?
MovieAce I struggle to understand what people are saying so that made it hard to follow the plot. I didn't expect it to be a pure spy movie I thought it was an action movie. Im not saying the movie is bad. I had to read it on the internet to understand the plot.
I loved 1st, fucking hated the 2nd, really liked 3, and once again loved the 4th.
RJ reviews same
RJ reviews 2nd was crap but entertaining in its shittynes, but by far the worst MI movie
LOL mi2 was fine you must be a faggot, way to be original to diss mi:2 like every clueless kids do
khav ll let people have their opinions, yeah MI2 isn't that bad, but they can think what they want.
their opinions suck shit lmao MI2 is a cult movie today still enjoyable to put that baby on the good old dvd player
the start of an iconic franchise, doubt anyone expected it to go for this long back then. MI is more popular now than ever before
A classic movie, watch in on theaters when I was a kid. That Tom cruise hanging on a rope scene is one of my all time favorite scene ever
But the sequels still great movies regardless.
lasthavoc Yeah, I'm looking forward to Rogue Nation, how about you.
Definitely. If you're going to make a summer blockbuster film MI is a franchise that typically stands apart from the rest as far as story, action, and effects.
lasthavoc I feel you
Happy 20th Anniversary MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE!
The first movie is the best. This makes me want to watch it again, it's been a while!
spike17spiegel nah the second movie is the best
@@jayjaysworld7110 I understand your opinion but I feel like MI2 had a weaker plot compared to MI1
@@jayjaysworld7110 Ur funny
Overall an exciting spy yarn that came out just at the right time (The film was released a few months after Goldeneye, which kind of brought back a re-interest in 007 and the spy genre in general)
The film is fantastic, however despite being based on the TV series, I actually found it to be far removed from the show.
This is a VERY underrated film! My Grade an A as well!
This movie is not underrated at all, everyone knows it's a great film.
Yeah. It's about as underrated as A New Hope.
Paolo Francisco Villanueva I hardly hear people talk about it when they talk about the film franchise!
Paolo Francisco Villanueva well to me it’s underrated, if you don’t think so, that’s fine!
Same thing happened to me with Fox Chris, flagged my Gone Girl review for having 11 seconds of footage from the trailer with no audio.

Agree with you 100%. You're by far my favorite movie reviewer, though it probably helps that you seem to be my long lost twin or something.
After this review I really want to watch Mission: Impossible again, I haven't seen it in a while. I agree that it's one of the best in the series and a really good action movie
Man, you are amazing Chris Stuckmann!!!!
Keep doing what you're doing :)
I still have MI1 on VHS-Tape, but i haven't watched it in years
Max said he didn't quote scripture in his E-Mails. She never said he didn't say it verbally
Gavin48 My thoughts exactly :)
God, i need to watch this great classic again.
MovieAce Also I love DePalma but M:I is the last good movie he has made.
MovieAce I agree with you on the seeming consensus of MI4 being the best now, I would still probably go with the first one. The fourth one is exciting and entertaining, but I think the first one is just the best overall film in the series and is masterfully crafted with a lot of suspense and subtlety.
This Generation is getting slower in mind by the minute too used to action movies with overblown effects to them means its good movie
MovieAce uh yeah MI 4 is good but Paula Patton’s character is so boring and Jeremy renner’s character is awesome
DERE HE IS
Yes. Yes. Yes.
Four Eyes and Bow Ties you get the reference? :)

This is one of my favorite movies of the late 90's!! I love it and believe it's extremely underrated and I'm glad you agree!!!
Mission Impossible is a heist movie marketed as an action movie. When you start to look at it that way, it gets even better.
I don't know if you've done a Minority Report review, but I would love to see that.
I second this!
I heard in an old video that it is Chris' favorite Spielberg film.
The first!
***** The first for sure.
***** The first one is great. You can completely skip MI2.
My biggest problem with this movie is the cinematography actually, it has a pixelated, dull image that almost looks like I'm watching it on VHS even though I have the blu ray.
yeah i found that the blu ray transfer isn't great. Good movie though!
I think this movie is a classic.
De Palma's best movie IMHO. I have seen this movie probably 20 times and enjoy it every time.
Hey Chris I really love when you do these like series of reviews they are really fun and I always look forward to the next ones!
When I think of this movie as a whole I think it's an average action film, but when it's dissected piece by piece I really admire this film even more.
I saw this like 4-5 years ago and the only thing I didn't like about was(like Chris said) how the internet worked in that world, it truly was laughable.
Still think my favourite Cruise film is Eyes Wide Shut
Without a doubt.
Well, that's a Kubrick, so it's unfair to even think about comparing to most of his other stuff
Terry Silvester whats the password?
***** Go buy it! It's brilliant. Maybe my favourite Kubrick film. which is saying a lot
Sam Weth Fidelio ;)
I have a huge problem with the movie and the whole series: The Title. Mission impossible was never about one hero, it was about the team. If you see it removed from that, it is good. But mission Impossible? Not really
swanpride Ghost Protocol did the whole team thing very well I thought.
swanpride Ghost Protocol is what you are after.
***** Also in Ghost Protocol every action scene is given a very specific and unique twist that makes it stand out. It's a phenomenal action movie.
swanpride are you demented so is the movie , its all about the team how they all pull it off working together . stop watching movies if your that slow that you think it was about Ethan hunt only and sorry but watch the original TV show its about the team but the one agent was always at the fore front . some people just are not as smart as they think
Okay? Thank you.
Gotta love the craftsmanship of directors like Brian De Palma. He set this whole thing in motion.
Even the fact that the bible is in the safehouse is circumstantial at best in regards to proving Jim was behind it all
Do more reviews of classic movies, love them!!
The passion you show in this video about this movie makes me want to watch it again. The first and only time I did was like ten years ago, and yep, I didn't undertand most of the plot..... I thought the movie just didn't make any sense.....
Rewatching this years later I am amazed at the pacing despite people hating on it for not being action-y enough. Great movie!
Man, Chris' account gets better every month!!
I'm A Huge Fan Of The "Mission: Impossible" Franchise! I Love It So Much I Own Them On DVD, Video, And Bluray!!!!
Great review redux, Chris. Looking forward to the others... Especially the missing "Ghost Protocol" review.

An I'm still waiting for hilarosity review of Vampire's Kiss with Nicolas Cage :(
As always Chris a perfect review of a lost treasure.
Yay a suggestion by me has been done!!! lol
Lurch150 thatd be good haha
Did you suggest this Alex?
He was the "Hudson" of Mission Impossible.
i just watched this movie... and i agree with every single thing you said basically. this movie was frigging awesome!!!
I still loved MI 2 . Cheesy and beautiful.
Nobody? In case you watched of course.
brianpso Yes Mr.Nobody thought no one has seen it :P One of my favorite scifi movies.
Damn! Can't believe I ordered the same shirt that you have on Chris, I'm still waiting on mine a week after I ordered it though. If you ordered from Riptapparrel can you tell me what size you got? Coz I got a similar build to you but ordered a small.

A? I would have given it a B or B+
Watched this after years, upscales well in 4K... helicopter scene at the end was fantastic in surround sound. Better then the majority of Netflix movies today
