    The longest serving theme to date. With a few tweaks and re-recordings this theme ran, without pause, from series 4 to series 17 and was only abolished because 80s era producer John Nathan-Turner thought it was too out of date. How wrong he was. I swear, if you didn't know that it was made in the 60s you would have no doubt if I told you it was made last week. Anyway, enough ramblings, enjoy!

    This is for me the definitive Doctor Who theme arrangement. I know that Delia Derbyshire preferred her original arrangement (1963-67), but I believe she improved tremendously on it here. The reverb on the bassline, coupled with the added electronic "spangles" and famous background "hiss" , made this second arrangement perfect. In my opinion it will NEVER be surpassed. Absolutely love it.

    There is a definite haunting quality to this music which subscribes to the gothic horror elements started in Patrick Troughton period. The gothic themes reached its height during the Tom Baker period. There is a reason why this theme lasted for so long. It's mesmerizing. Certainly my favorite version of the series' theme.

    • @thecoachmansfolly
      @thecoachmansfolly 3 года назад +7

      drrob1963 It was not an intentional sound effect. It was caused by the magnetic tape of the theme master copy degrading over time. By 1979/1980 the degradation was so bad it pretty much forced the producers to re-record the theme.

    • @thecoachmansfolly
      @thecoachmansfolly 3 года назад +8

      @stephen noonan The stereo mix is a later re-recording/remastering of the origonal theme not the actual master copy. The original master which was made and used for the TV recording was made using open reel to reel tape and was recorded in mono as per the technology made available to the radiophonic workshop at the time, rememberthe funding for the BBC radiophonic workshop was minimal at best. There was little to no point using stereo sound as UK TV was broadcast in mono as standard. Stereo TV didn't even come out in the UK until 1989, pretty much after the classic series ended. It was also very likely they used reused reel to reel tape as well as per the policy of the cash strapped BBC at the time which would add to the deterioration of the sound quality... Furthermore use the evidence of your ears, Compare the sound of the themes from each of the first 4 Doctor's intros, even with the tweeks and edits made to the theme they all used the same master copy because re-recording costs money the producers of Dr Who didn't have in the 70s. Analog tape degrades, the hiss and whoosh which increases over time is a result of that...

    • @anthonyperkins7556

      The instrumental white noise rhythm track is three pieces of white noise recorded at different frequencies, reverb added, cut to three short lengths, joined together then the tape reversed and dubbed onto the theme tune.

    The reason why this is one of my favourite themes is because of the energy it has. For example, compare the very start of it to the very start of the original theme tune, because then you can notice the variety of sounds and 'whooshes' used in this one
    P.S. In the actual title sequence I just love how all of the sound is perfectly synced with the visual effects e.g. the random bars splitting up the moment the first 'whooshe' in the sound comes on

      @rassilontdavros3004 8 лет назад +7

      Yeah- for some reason, when they re-edited it for the Pertwee and Baker episodes, they muffled the heck out of it. Never understood why.

    • @protomenfan200x
      @protomenfan200x 8 лет назад +19

      +RassilonTDavros The '70 Pertwee/T. Baker theme sounds muffled because it's a copy of the '67 Troughton theme, which itself is a copy of the original August '63 theme master tape. (Which is a separate mix from the televised '63 Hartnell titles.)
      Rather than completely reconstruct the theme each time a new one was commissioned, Delia Derbyshire would make a new copy of the original master tape/'67 theme master tape. Then, she would re-treat the copy to add all of the various sound effects, like the rising "spangles" that play over the intro. Each time this was done, the overall quality of the recording decreased a bit.
      It's basically the same thing that happens when you make photocopies of photocopies; each version is slightly less defined/clean than the one that came before.
      There's also some editing/mixing techniques used to shorten the theme. For example, the first half of the opening bassline is layered over the second half to create the more condensed lead-in to the theme (two repetitions as opposed to four). Also, there's some added delay and reverb to help segue into the looping outro.
      All of that adds up to a less-defined sound, though I don't think it hurts the '70 theme too much. Personally, I think that's the best opening the show ever had.

      It's a very reasonable way of looking at it, and entirely justified when viewing the show from the 1980s since. But the Delia version of the theme was there for the first 16+ years [with very minor tweaks]; and for me - I always feel they made a huge mistake ditching it. Peter Howell's one is good in its own right (albeit without the horror aspect) - but all the rest are pale imitations.

    Coming in here to yell about Delia Derbyshire - look her up, if you don't know who she is! She arranged this piece of music for Ron Grainer. From Wikipedia:
    "[it was] one of the first television themes to be created and produced by entirely electronic means. When Grainer first heard it, he was so amazed by her rendering of his theme that he asked: "Did I really write this?", to which Derbyshire replied: "Most of it".[17] Grainer attempted to get her a co-composer credit, but the attempt was prevented by the BBC bureaucracy, which then preferred to keep the members of the workshop anonymous.[18] She would not be credited on-screen for her work until Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor."

    • @schubertuk
      @schubertuk 2 года назад

      Actually - this is misleading; Delia Derbyshire's superb and original rendition of the theme has very little electronics in it at all - it is a good 95% Musique Concrete, taking found sounds and then using tape manipulation effects (tape loops, reversing, speeding up, slowing down etc). Only a single electronic tone generator and a white noise generator were actually used as input (and then they were repitched by speeding up/slowing down tape loops). This - to me - makes the output even more impressive and explains why so many electronic rehashes come up so short when trying to imitate it. Delia DID do a fully electronic version of the theme (reluctantly, and she hated it) - but it was never officially used (except when accidentally released on one Pertwee episode).

Then when it came to recreate a new theme for patrick troughton, it was taken out of storage and redubbed to fit with patricks title sequence, it was thought that the old theme just didn't have the right feel to go with patricks title sequence. That all I've gathered.

    This theme makes me think of Mainly the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton), and Jamie. 👀
    "Come on Jamie, Let's go on an adventure!"
    P.S. I don't the Second Doctor says that, but that's my line that comes in my head.

    This was made in 1960, is something that I still find hard to believe it sounds so futuristic for 1960.

    McCoy's first season was weak, but from Ace becoming a full companion the stories got stronger. Season 26 had some of the best stories for a number of years.

    I like the epic sound and feel of the new opening, but it's just not quite the same. It certainly lacks the distinctive "Creepy" and "Mysterious" feel of the original and really not only has that feel become faded from the title sequence but also the show itself. The show is still good mind you, but it just doesn't have the mystery the old show had.
    I miss it, but evolution was always a factor and the show must change now and then.

      That made me smile!! :-) It started in 1963, not the late 1950s. But I can see how our low TV budgets and lack of colour (until the 1970s) - might give an American the impression the show is older than it actually is... ;-)

    He removed it because it sounded out-of-date AT THE TIME, the 1980's.

    Not really. Apart from the spangles and the echo, it's really the same theme as the full 1963 them - In fact, what they did is they grabbed the 1963 master, added the spangle effects, added echo and re-equalized, and that's basically it.
