Yellow lab african cichlids are more mellow compared to other mbunas! My 2 yellow labs are doing great with hap, peacock, large type tetras and catfishes
Ive always mixed all of my different cichlids together...you just have to have a large tank and enough areas that are set up with different rocks, plants and substrate
I’ve had years of success mixing and had where a peacock completely dominated the entire tank and had a kenyi that was driven to kill every tank mate. Biggest tip is watch your tank every day with cichlids.
I used to have cichlids, LOVED them. Peacocks were... mean to say the least lol. Had quite a few fish in the tank, peacock wouldn't leave anyone alone. Had to give him his own tank, which he definitely made his own space.
Yep, you can mix Mbuna with Peacocks & Haps. Make sure your Peacocks & Haps are bigger. Mix them at a 3 to 1 ratio & you'll rarely ever have problems. Been doing it for years!
I have 3 frontosa and 3 geophagus topajos along w congo tetras and rose line's and they all get along great...very happy healthy fish...just make sure they have plenty of room n they are good to go...mine are tank bred so water parameters are typically close as opposed to wild cought that would need very different parameters...I keep my water stable n very clean n that helps Alot as well.
I keep Frontosa’s too , I’ve been growing “big boy “ since he was the size of a quarter. He is about the size of a iPhone 13 Pro Max 7 years later. He was raised alone in a 75 gallon now house in a 125 with a few tank mates. I’m looking for a female to start his family. Are any of yours breeding yet
I have peacocks, haps, convicts, mbunas, red jewels, blood parrot, Jack Dempsey, and a few other species of cichlids in one tank. Only had issues with one cichlid being super aggressive and he’s since been removed after killing two of my albino convicts. I have yet to put my new mbunas in yet since I’m still growing them out.
I have a mixed cichlid tank in my 55 and so far no issues! I’m looking to add even more limestone rock so it’ll have more spots to hide! I even threw in some hornwort and I heard they might eat it which I don’t mind lol but sheesh it’s filled out more and gotten greener by the day!
I added limestone rock around Christmas time and I swear the day after one of my red zebras started holding babies in her mouth! So now I have a bunch of babies in a lil tank at the moment!

Sounds like a great tank. I would love to see it! Almost a year is a long time to have that stability without one of them going crazy on you. Good work!
When I worked at a petstore a woman brought it a 4-5 inch red tail shark, which resides in one of my community tanks now. One of the most bi polar fish I have ever had. He well be chill for weeks and decide he is gonna be a pyschopath today and chase my tetras and so on. Im gonna move him on to a 75 with tiger barbs, but for now he works surprisingly well with my cherry barbs and ember tetras. The only fish that lived in that tank he wouldnt chase was my apisto, theyd litterally eat from the same algae wafer / got along just fine.
I had a yellow lab for 7 years. His name was mr ass. I loved him to death but his tank mates would say otherwise. He was territorial and his hide was his hide. Anyone who came near faced his wrath. I miss him a lot and today just welcomed a blue cichlid to my tank. Hopefully he is more mellow.
people always said that but i mixed my mbuna and the mbuna had fry which i moved the mbuna were the tank bosses even though they were the smallest but everyone seemed to do just fine
I have three peacocks in my mbuna tank. Which I think only works because they match them in aggression. And there is plenty of hiding places and line of sight breaks.
The pipes are the key. I have exactly 1 Mbuna work 2 peacocks and a Jack Dempsey. Mbuna loves his pipe tunnel system so he don't mind the others swimming about lol
I've mixed a lot of different cichlids mostly Malawi & Central American cichlids with success. The only one I couldn't mix was a Lake Victorian cichlid that gauged the eyes out of a larger nicaraguense. I put him in a tank with a juvenile pair of wolf cichlids thinking the bully would be put in his place and they completely ignored him but also he did not gauge their eyes out long story short if you have a cichlid tank that works just consider yourself blessed and leave well enough alone.
Haps, Peacocks, Mbunas, Lake Malwai, Lake Taganyika, and Lake Victoria. All currently mixed in one 55 gallon tank since they were babies and if adding a new join, always made sure they were babies so they wouldn't get picked on, or getting killed by the alpha tank boss. Works well, no issues, just normal fighting for dominance in the hierarchy (no serious injuries, if it gets too bad I'll break them up and chase the aggressor around with a net to "punish" them and feel inferior in front of everyone. Works really well to stop bullying if you have issues. Just a quick chase with the net for a few seconds, don't stress him and tank mates out too much). Most of my Cichies have grown up since they were a month or so old, so they are a pretty tight-nit family and always sleep cuddled up in a compact area, even though there's plenty of space around the tank, they love sleeping together. Mostly so they don't drift around too much, for warmth, and they feel safe. NEVER just have one of the breeds all alone with a mix of the other breeds. He/she will definitely get bullied. So, if you do decide to mix breeds, make sure you get them at the same time and make sure they're juveniles. If you decide to add more in the future, make sure you add them in pairs as juveniles, so the hierarchy won't feel threatened and bully or kill the new guy(s). As time goes by, they'll grow up and start to form bonds one at a time, starting in the lower ranks of the hierarchy, and eventually they'll work their way up to the position they feel comfortable in. Anyways, here's the end of my rant and life story... haha, I hope this helps some people, and if you have a mixed tank as well, I'd love to hear your stories and experiences! Take care!!
Mostly Northfin and a little Xtreme. I supplement with frozen krill and zucchini about once per week. I change the water once per week about 75%. Sometimes I will do an extra water change as well.
I do have a 200 gallon tank and i mixed them all together, and yes not a great idea. Mbuna is super aggresive and i got a lot a dead fish after all hehe.
I had a blue zebra called big blue bastard he didn't stop until all my other blue zebras, aceias and rustys were dead, he was beautiful but he died so now we are left with just yellow labs and blue dolphins which get along, just ordered 5 peacocks so hope they get on
I got 15 guppies. A yellow lab baby hitchhiked and he's barely two inches. Now he is living with those guppies, corydoras, rainbows, tetras and denison barbs. It's been a week
Usually not a good idea as goldfish like cooler waters and bettas like warmer water Plus goldfish get pretty big (especially the single tails) and might eat the betta
hi.i have exactly the same like you in my fish tank..only one small careleus .but at the moment everthing is ok.all rest of my tank is mix haps and peacocks...and about diet ..im always mix spiruline with garlic pellets and new life spectron..
I wanted peackock and hap tank, but ended up ordering both due to a buy 8, get 2 free special and their peacocks were limited. They were added with the 3 mbuna and pleco i already had. I haven't lost anyone yet, but I see a lot of territorial disputes.i recently lowered the temperature per one of your suggestions😊
Every fish is different, but I've had labs and rusties bully demasoni and scolofi, the right lab would work great, but id be too afraid to mix beyond a mellow adult male lab personally (my rusties are some of the most aggressive mbuna I own so I've got a weird bias lol).
I had quite a few fry both peacocks and haps, had some mbuna, put them all together to grow out and they've been happily living together for well over a year no problems no beat up fish. My experience has been if they are raised together they will stay together, putting older ones together in a tank my experience has said don't do that again!
That’s awesome! My first batch were raised together from about 3 inches, which were a lot larger than yours. Still not full grown, but I had a few terrorist fish in there. Let me know if any of yours turn to the dark side, haha
I remember when I first got a 220 and just bought like 60 Malawi and Tanganyika cichlid. I guess they were pretty split evenly because I had like 15 peacocks, 5 frontosa, 20 mbuna, like 10 yellow and blk tropheus and some shell dwellers and I remember only losing 1 fish to aggression and it was an mbuna that was getting bullied by the biggest mbuna 🤷🏻♂️ I didn’t know much back then but it all worked out beautiful after roughly 6 years I sold the whole thing for $200 with fish and everything 😂 what a waste
Have many mixed of both.. my tank is pretty peaceful. I see a chase now and then but no blood baths. I feed both pellet and flakes at same time.. fish choose the type they like for the most part. I have NOT had luck with South American in the tank however so I avoid South American. EDIT: Forgot to mention.. 125 G Tank

Take care!!
I do the trick about adding juvies with mature fish to keep the aggression down too. Works well!
he's the star of the ❤..
Sure is!
I have a electric blue johanni with my peacock and haps and they are chilling😎
I’ve got three yellow labs pretty small, three larger peacocks, four mbunas, a red jewel and a random Texas cichlid who get along great.
That's quite an eclectic collection! Glad they're doing well!
What food you give to them and how often you change your water and how much percent?
Mostly Northfin and a little Xtreme. I supplement with frozen krill and zucchini about once per week. I change the water once per week about 75%. Sometimes I will do an extra water change as well.
Yes i have a mix tank
I do have a 200 gallon tank and i mixed them all together, and yes not a great idea. Mbuna is super aggresive and i got a lot a dead fish after all hehe.
I had a blue zebra called big blue bastard he didn't stop until all my other blue zebras, aceias and rustys were dead, he was beautiful but he died so now we are left with just yellow labs and blue dolphins which get along, just ordered 5 peacocks so hope they get on
I mixed them and I had no problems they was very clam
Merhaba, keyifli hobiler. Yem ne kullanıyorsunuz tavsiyelerinize açığım. İyi günler keyifli hobiler.
I got 15 guppies. A yellow lab baby hitchhiked and he's barely two inches. Now he is living with those guppies, corydoras, rainbows, tetras and denison barbs. It's been a week
Sounds like some of those will soon become snacks for the lab.
Don’t know if this is a good idea but j have a goldfish tank with a female betta. I also have another tank with a betta and his henchmen. 2 rosy reds
Usually not a good idea as goldfish like cooler waters and bettas like warmer water
Plus goldfish get pretty big (especially the single tails) and might eat the betta
5 jeweled cichlids, 1 blue Groamy, 2 Kennyi cichlids, 1 tiger Oscar, 4 Crayfish, 1 kio
hi.i have exactly the same like you in my fish tank..only one small careleus .but at the moment everthing is ok.all rest of my tank is mix haps and peacocks...and about diet ..im always mix spiruline with garlic pellets and new life spectron..
Hep, gotta make sure they get their veggies!
@@CichlidCharmer ok..i will do.👍.thnks for tips.. and congratulation for you channel....its a lot good tips ..
@@gianbarmanable you’re so welcome!
Hopefully it works out!
I Love my mixed African, S. American Tank!
Awesome! Glad it’s working for you!
Every fish is different, but I've had labs and rusties bully demasoni and scolofi, the right lab would work great, but id be too afraid to mix beyond a mellow adult male lab personally (my rusties are some of the most aggressive mbuna I own so I've got a weird bias lol).
I have a mixed African Cichlid tank, even have a flowerhorn...so far all good 😊
No way - a flowerhorn? Amazing
He's not quite an adult, but he's still the biggest in the tank lol
@@Boxers6466 Better keep an eye on that guy! 😁
That one is the most calm of them
He really is. He does some chasing around his pipe castle but that’s all. And everyone leaves him alone
@@CichlidCharmer you need to add an Afra cobue 😅
@@jtm6671 I don’t even know what that is!
@@CichlidCharmer cynotilapia zebroides cobue
Mine have been together for 2 years almost and my Ray is the one that breaks up the fights between everyone else lol
Sounds like a good boy! I don’t have any fish that break up fights. Always wanted one though
peacock haps and mbuna... my eureka red is my jerk fish :D
75 gallon assortment cichlid tank with a single bala shark
Have many mixed of both.. my tank is pretty peaceful. I see a chase now and then but no blood baths. I feed both pellet and flakes at same time.. fish choose the type they like for the most part. I have NOT had luck with South American in the tank however so I avoid South American.
EDIT: Forgot to mention.. 125 G Tank
Sounds like it’s working nicely. Good size tank 🤘
I’m Probobly moving my 3 yellow labs into a 75 gallon and adding some peacocks
It works Perfect for me
I'm gonna try this combo with my south American Chiclids, wish me luck!!
Which ones, Bharat?
@@CichlidCharmer, severum, electric blue acara, snow white Chiclid, green terror and firemouth.
Would that work?
@@bharatnaidu4785 it’s a fairly wide gamut of aggressiveness so you’d have to be careful
@@CichlidCharmeryou are so awesome that you reply to any comment..
Mr Charmer you are a charmer in real life too.
I'll get one today and check it out for a day, if it doesn't work I'll return it
Totally my pleasure, and thank you, too!
I did that with a snowflake mbuna
I've had all three and only had issues with 1 Auratus. I have a different one now that likes to chase my giant danios. lol
Peacock, imbuna, parrot, green terror, dolphon, convicts, red tail shark
Very oddball mix 😃 my red tail got beat up badly by my ACs
I had a Demasoni take out a third of my tank…
He got evicted. I now have an international tank with africans and americans mixed. Peacefully for a while now. A large salvini female is the tank boss and she runs a tight but “light hearted” ship.
Everything about how you presented that is so funny. I mean except for all the death and destruction lol
I had mixed mine for years and they were all fine so this isn't true. The one that I had problems with the most in a community tank was my Oscar.
I’d love an oscar.
My haps peacocks and mbunas get along fine. The labidochromis was tank boss until I introduced a larger maingano pair to the tank lol
We in the Hobby do it every which way but loose!
