Its funny how polar opposite the owners of the two Merseyside clubs are. One are very hands off Money-Men who expect the club to operate within a fairly tighter budget than most big clubs but have hired the right people to do just that while the other is very hands on and spends lavishly without really caring about whether the money is being invested in a worthwhile manner

Between Koeman, Benitez, and Ancelotti, they have 11 league titles (12 if you assume the title Real has essentially won), 7 cup triumphs, 3 champions league titles, and 2 Europa leagues. Considering NONE of those honors came at Everton, this to me looks like a club who wishes they could be “bailed out by an elite manager” like FSG is. Something about seeing the likes of Tim Cahill, Steven Pienaar and Jolteon Lescott playing no nonsense football attracted me to the club, since my home team (Feyenoord) is basically the same. Everton is the epitome of how not to spend money on players. It's crazy under Moyes they were top 7 regulars with a small budget. Finishing 4th the one time in 2005.
Since the money came, they hired people who knew little about football and spend on players who are average or really poor examples Delph, Iwobi, Keane, Pickford and Tosun. Plus they were planning to build a new stadium to attract players to their project that is failing big time. Few signings like Richarlison, Calvert Lewin, Digne(Likely to join Villa soon) and Gray have been a success but that's the only positive. 27 years and no closer to silverware and 6 different managers failed to get them European football on a consistent basis last time was in the 17/18 Europa league. Some of the managers were league and Champions league winners like Ancelotti and Benitez while others are terrible managers in Koeman and Marco Silva(the most overrated manager ever, the next Mourinho my ass). They have gone backwards over the years.
The blame goes to the board for having no proper planning on player recruitment, improving the club's infrastructures and hiring the right manager to take them to the next level. Now Everton is a side of false hope and grandeur of delusion. Thinking that spending a lot of money will close the gap on the big boys only to spend it poorly on players who don't fit the culture of Everton. James lasted for one season before heading to Qatar. Delph and Iwobi stealing a living. Keane is abysmal in most games. The less said about Sigurdsson the better. I truly feel sorry for the fans to witness the chaos that is happening at Everton. They are yet to be relegated but if this don't get better soon then relegation could be inevitable in the future.

The current strategy that can address is gradually replacing under performing players by stages where all Everton fans has similar view who should stay/who should leave. Too bad we have attitude players that does not wants to leave or go on loan when like Tosun. 'I'll just get in this young manager, play attacking and focus on the academy and we'll make top 4 in a season or two'. The big criticism about Morshiri is that he doesn't have a footballing brain and he doesn't have the right people around him. Well he's brought in Rafa who most definitely has a footballing brain. The biggest impact he had at Liverpool was not only winning the Champion's League, but changing and upgrading the youth setup. He had a good track record with transfers as well despite the shoestring budget. This idea that he hasn't been successful I can't get my head around. Only a handful of managers in the prem have ANY titles to speak of. Graeme Potter has come in and done well (like Martinez all those years ago). You fire Benitez now, pay him and his background staff over 10 mil pounds, get in someone promising, then see they're not cut out for it. Let the man that knows football do his job. I'd give him one more season then re-evaluate.

while this last few seasons results do leave a sense of a club that's "threading water", i wonder just how much of this is down to the competitive state of the Premier League, where if you stand still, you will get overtaken by other clubs in the pecking order.
Everton spent hundreds of millions to reshape a side that was caught between the end of the Moyes Era and a lot of financial and sporting uncertainty. I don't think they spent that money particularly well (some signings were very inflated) but they do have some talent on the team (namely Richarlyson and Calvert-Lewin, Mina, Davies...). It's not Top Premier League level (that's world class/"#1 in position in the world" level), but it's not that far from Leicester's squad level.
What i do feel is that a lot of fans of clubs just outside the top 6 are forever trapped in this cycle that, with a little bit more investment and better managment, they can get into those Top 6 places. It's just not that easy. The level in the Premier League is very, very high. Lots of clubs are spending fortunes to keep up and get ahead. You have to keep moving forward or risk getting trapped. Everton have just about kept up. Could they have done it with better use of the resources? Absolutely!, as Leicester and others have shown. But i don't think it's reasonable to expect a dramatic improvement that assures the Toffees a top 6/top 7 status every year in a very competitive EPL that is only getting stronger and stronger.

  • @Kurgan618
    @Kurgan618 2 года назад +5

The decline isn't as simplistic as you make out. The shit show is becuase of:
    1. Usmanov. His bag man Moshiri knows the sum total of nothing about footall. He is Usmanov's puppet. Usmanov thinks he understands football and his 'gaze' fell upon Everton when he was frozen out of his favoured Arsenal. As crap as Arsenal have performed subsequently, they are lucky Usmanov didn't get his way. Usmanov is the man who mingles with the "hollywood" football elite and picks the managers. His money (managed by Moshiri) attracts the players. He is supposedly the person who insisted on Everton signing Iwobi. He is the man who is mates with Benitez and asked him to manage Everton. He hides behind Moshiri for the reasons detailed in the press.
    2. DoF/signings. Whilst Walsh and certainly Brands have faced interference from Usmanov, the fact is they were out of their depth. Brands was happy to keep taking a hefty salary until the fans turned on him, and even then he tried to deflect blame. If he had signed the right players for the club then Everton would be performing well and that would have meant that Usmanov's picks could've been tolerated. Nothing wrong with playing Iwobi or James intermittently if the team was winning - they're regularly unfit anyway. All concerned would save face. Too many of Walsh's, and then Brands' signings were abysmal.
    3. The club perception. As many people who have worked for the club have commented, Everton is seen as a care home for the obsolete, overpaid and underworked. Whether you're a second-hand car salesman like Walsh or Brands, a stubborn idiot like Silva (who brought a coach with him who'd previously accused Big Dunc of racially abusing him ??!!), a big time Charlie like Delph or James... Everton is now synonymous with paying you handsomely to fail. Not only can you prove incompetent, but the 27 years of shite has guaranteed that you get away with it because the club is of little interest to the pundits and journos who would rather scrutinise the bigger teams. You get to continue out of the spotlight until your contract expires (see whole list of players still on our books who haven't kicked a ball or play once a year!), or you get a better offer (Ancelotti)/ you're fired to spare Kenwright and Co.
    4. Business plan - there isn't one. No one has any idea how to run a football club... but the good news is, according to Kenwright other clubs' hierarchy look to Everton and ask what would Everton do? Then presumably, do the exact opposite.

  • @Tom_murray89

It’s really worrying what’s going on with Everton yes they’ve had investment recently however alongside the merry go round of managers it’s took the club backwards towards relegation rather then European football. The best solution in my view is to get an owner who will trust football people to run the club for him rather then him running. Yes the club I support Newcastle United have some may say the richest owners in football however they leave the running of Newcastle to football people whereas the owner wants to run the whole club himself.

Something that has been largely unspoken of is the cost these days of "becoming" a Top 4 club (let alone League Contenders) in the Premier League. After all; the owners of Manchester City (who at the time of the Al-Nahyan takeover where in a similar position to Everton) have had to spend around £2 Billion to turn that club into a Regular Top 4 finisher that can win the Premier League, despite the fact they have mostly made the right footballing decisions since the takeover.
Thus in an age where World Class Players cost £100+ Million these days; even if Everton got every footballing decision right (which they clearly haven't), there was zero prospect of reaching the Top 4 (and almost none to reach the Top 6) on a £500 Million spend, not when Everton need to usurp all of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves & Leicester City to break into the Top 6 and usurp Manchester United to break into the Top 4.
Regardless, my advice to Everton would be to appoint a more progressive coach like Erik ten Hag and give him something like £1 Billion to spend on the Transfer Market. Then Everton would be in a position to secure regular Europa League Football (and win the competition on a regular basis, thus getting into the CL via the Back) and challenge for Top 4 on occasion.

Everton need to sell the underperforming players and then build around their core of Richarlison, Calvert- Lewin, Godfrey and Pickford: as much as he still has his bad moments. Then they need to hire a manager and a director that will work together to secure the right signings. I would go for German coaches as they have one of the most rigorous programs to become pro coaches. Invest in youth academy and scout young under-appreciated players. Similarly to Brentford but with 3x more budget. Players like Allan and Tosun should never have been signed, they need to get younger like Arsenal.

Focus on mainly players with an English Passport.
Focus on attacking free flowing play.
Using the same tactics/style in all ranks of the club.
Setting itself a hard (and below league average) limit for maximum money spent on suplemental new players and setting a maximum on how much is spent on a single transfer.
Making interaction with the local citizens of prime importance.

@@your_virtuoso Ah yes! It's "rude" to apply a bit of common sense and say that, if you don't know what you're talking about, just don't talk. Sure. I thought my criticisms were pretty fair but whatever.
But no, this second comment is also filled entirely with bullshit. Stop rewriting history. Again, he only joined the club because of Ancelotti - Benitez literally had nothing to do with it, by the time he joined, James *already* wanted to leave.
Equally, he was given a fair shot time and time again. But what the point of a "fair shot" if their heart isn't in it?
You clearly still live in 2014 mate - James is gifted, but world class??? What world do you live in lmaoooo...his career fell off before he joined Everton, he failed to revive it at the club and I doubt he will ever come close to the top level of football again.
You say the club couldn't adapt, but this is exactly what I mean - you're literally warping the facts to fit whatever agenda you have. *James is the one that failed to adapt. He literally complained about the physical intensity of English football, and even USED ENGLISH WEATHER AS AN EXCUSE FOR POOR FORM AND A LACK OF MOTIVATION.* AGAIN, this was widely reported on by the press at the time - because he said these things PUBLICLY!
Now I would be the very first person to point out how poorly the club is run - trust me, it pisses me off, all the time! But James has absolutely nothing to do with that. You cannot change the facts that were, again, *widely reported* - James only joined the club because of Ancelotti, he constantly displayed a lack of motivation to play in England, and as such, his performances were inconsistent.
When Ancelotti left, he made it abundantly clear to the public that he wanted to leave too. Which was convinient since *he was grossly over-paid, and we desperately needed to balance the books to avoid getting in trouble for violating Financial Fair Play, since we have drastically over-spent in the past few years and have not seen a return on our investments in terms of revenue - ALSO HIGHLY REPORTED BY THE PRESS!* Why do you think we could only afford players like Demarai Grey for 1.7million? Because that's how restricted we were for overspending!
So in the end, he didn't want to play for us or in England, and we needed him off our wage bill. These are the facts, you can choose to ignore them in favour of revisionism, but at the end of the day, like I said, you're merely exposing the fact that you don't know anything about the situation.
Football isn't as simple as you think it is. It's never so black and white, there are so many shades of grey, so many conflicting factors at play. And the James situation perfectly encapsulates this.
