Professionals don't diagnose drives they don't recover. There isn't one data recovery company that will JUST diagnose your drive and tell you what exactly is wrong with it, without having an agreement to recover it. And besides how will you diagnose this clicking drive? What will you use, and what are you expecting from that whatever? This is a very solid video introducing the topic of how the drive can fail, and most importantly telling people not to attempt any DIY fixes without any prior experience. That’s just common sense. If your data on a potentially damaged drive is valuable, don’t risk losing it by your lack of experience and trying to cut the costs down. Do backups if you want to prevent such things, and have people with skills do it for you.
Scare tactics from a company who wants to jack up their revenue. Should a complete novice attempt to recover critical data via repair by themselves? Of course not. But anyone with some basic electronics know how can solve a number of common drive problems on their own with a few basic tools. Why do you not mention checking for bad caps, diodes, or resistors on the pcb? Why do you not mention cleaning contacts or even inspecting the PCB for damage? Why do you not recommend ensuring the power supplied to the drive is sufficient to prevent repeat resetting? Dozens of troubleshooting tips for this kind of problem are widely available and accepted as safe preliminary steps before sending the disk for professional recovery.
because that's not usually the case or I would have, you don't need to guess with data that is important to you because guessing can ruin it. The statistics for the things you described being the culprit are extremely low. And don't forget how many drive are not recoverable because of people with no knowledge except watching youtube videos tried to do something they were clueless about. I just had a 10TB Enterprise drive begin clicking early this morning when restarting a computer that had been running without issues for several weeks straight. Yes to your first question, at the very least, but if you don't know this information I would not suggest trying a platter swap. There is much more to it than that and one mistake you will lose data for ever, especially with multiple platter drives.
And the problem is if ''we have professionals in our country'' dealing with this kind of problem. On the problem with firmware -> can this be damaged if physical damage? (my 2TB Toshiba didn't fall down but I accidentaly lifted the cable while moving and causing the HDD to flip in the air - i caught it, it didn't fall nor was hit. But it was working at the moment of this incident so when I connected it to the cable again clicking sound appeared which became constant in rhythmical almost pattern and WIndows couldn't recognize disc.) So I have a question. When the stuck head is moved off the platter and back to it's parked position, what is the action of the arm? Is the arm spring loaded? Does it want to stay in the parked position or does it freely float or move? The reason I ask is because I had an issue with my disk and the head was in the parked position but it appeared to be stuck or frozen. I gently checked for play with a screwdriver. It was stuck pretty good. I than applied pressure to the arm and it broke free but it now freely moves. It's not spring loaded. Non of the videos show how the action of the arm should be while parked. Thanks.
it depends on where the parking is. However there is a magnet that is pulling pushing the actuator arm which can cause it to jump or fly around. but these are only things one might come to learn as every single drive is different.

Well Toprak we look at it from a little different perspective. We look at reliability of a drive, from it's ability to be recovered when there are problems. All drives fail, the same as all tires will wear out on a car eventually. The way a user handles it has a huge impact on it. We always suggest Western Digital as they are the most resilient to damage. Samsungs are among the most favorite of some engineers.

+Ruidwaun ElMahgiub you need to be able to determine for sure what the problem is. We use very expensive data recovery diagnostics equipment to do this. If you do not have this equipment you will be guessing and one wrong guess can cost you your data. For example, even if you properly did a head swap, and the drive still doesn't work because the problem was not the heads, but it was the firmware. You would not be able to solve it, in addition to incorporating extremely high risk that was unecessary in changing the heads. hope this helps a little

Yesterday, I somehow noticed my backup external drive doing the normal head movement playing in slight higher (But not too much) volume for a few times. It views data and files just fine though and it turns back to normal volume sound after a couple minutes and back to less noticeably to hear like what should happen usually. Well anything that you would have available to you for drive health reporting would relate to the SMART data. This data is incomplete and only shows on a very basic level what is going on with the drive. If you have your drive almost full, it will make your drive work harder and hence may make it perform a bit louder at times. Also it could be sign your drive is beginning to fail. Healthy drives shouldn't make much more than a slight whirring noise.

are those drives supposed to start from the middle or is this something wrong? because my drive sounds and acts like the one in the video besides it's starting from the outside of the disc and basically makes the same movements but mirrored. but my drive is supposed to start from the outside.

The first question to ask is does the data matter, or can you lose it? The next thing to do is avoid powering it on. The clicking can be caused by a few different issues, a couple of them can get worse and cause the data to be unrecoverable. @@pventures6 I thought it was bollocks as well, but out of totally being desperate and lost hope. I wrapped the hdd in a plastic bag put it in the freezer for half an hour, then quickly took it out of the bag connected it to the pc via a cable. it worked enough for me to get the files off. then it went back to no go.. It's not bollocks, the theory behind it is, computers work much better in a freezing environment and no click noise, hot is no good. So soon as it warmed up it would not read click noise. I tried this some worked but not slim/pocket hdd's. If you don't believe it i don't blame you, this is not 'How to make crispy bacon in a microwave using tin foil'. I hate misinformation and the people who spread it, it pisses me off. So if ever you have a situation that you might wanna try this way, let me know if it worked for you. But you need to get the hdd very cold freezer not fridge, for 30 mins.. It did work for me.... Professional people charge extortionate rates to do an hours work and with no guarantee then they want payment, i come from the streets and i will find back street ways to get my shit of that hdd, for nothing...

Hi, I just noticed some clicking on my 4tb seagate external memory, but it's a more quite clicking, like you have to get really close so it can be heard. Btw, it was working perfectly 2 days ago. You are asking for trouble after that point. Well that's definitely not normal. Drives can click and still work when they are failing however I would not trust the drive at all. Are you running a RAID? What type of drives they are? Type of clicking sounds (loud, faint, how may seconds apart, duration)? Have been making the sound since the beginning? Is the clicking definitely your hard drive, or could it be the CD player? I would keep all your data backed up if it is the drives.
Well it can be normal, however I would check the date on the drive. If it's over a year or two I would consider changing it out. My hard drive was clicking and wouldn't load Windows anymore. I booted Linux Mint from the DVD and noticed I could still read data. I backupped most of the data on a series of USB pen drives, before the drive died completely. When the drive died, I put in a spare. Everything went better than expected.

@ TheCanadianLanBoy this would be considered previously worked on once you do that. We recommend doing nothing to the drive or its components as this can cause more damage to the drive.
One should never turn on a drive that has been dropped if the data is critical. The heads may have made contact with the platter, or a few other things may have happened. You wouldn't necessarily know what to look for unless you have experience working with these types of situations. Performing any more procedures besides closing the drive up and sending it to a professional will likely cause the data to be unrecoverable if it's not already.
The reason why your drive is clicking should be explained in the video. There is no easy fix to a dropped drive that has been damaged. The heads probably made contact with the platters, or came out of alignment. Changing the heads may be necessary but it may not even matter. You need to know what to look for on the platters and the heads to see if there is truly damage. If the drive was on, I guarantee there is damage to the platters.

I don’t understand y’all in the comments. This is a very solid video introducing the topic of how the drive can fail, and most importantly telling people not to attempt any DIY fixes without any prior experience. That’s just common sense.
If your data on a potentially damaged drive is valuable, don’t risk losing it by your lack of experience and trying to cut the costs down. Do backups if you want to prevent such things, and have people with skills do it for you.
Scare tactics from a company who wants to jack up their revenue. Should a complete novice attempt to recover critical data via repair by themselves? Of course not. But anyone with some basic electronics know how can solve a number of common drive problems on their own with a few basic tools. Why do you not mention checking for bad caps, diodes, or resistors on the pcb? Why do you not mention cleaning contacts or even inspecting the PCB for damage? Why do you not recommend ensuring the power supplied to the drive is sufficient to prevent repeat resetting? Dozens of troubleshooting tips for this kind of problem are widely available and accepted as safe preliminary steps before sending the disk for professional recovery.
because that's not usually the case or I would have, you don't need to guess with data that is important to you because guessing can ruin it. The statistics for the things you described being the culprit are extremely low. And don't forget how many drive are not recoverable because of people with no knowledge except watching youtube videos tried to do something they were clueless about. You don't have to be good at everything just pick one thing and excel in that.

I just had a 10TB Enterprise drive begin clicking early this morning when restarting a computer that had been running without issues for several weeks straight. Yes to your first question, at the very least, but if you don't know this information I would not suggest trying a platter swap. There is much more to it than that and one mistake you will lose data for ever, especially with multiple platter drives.

(my 2TB Toshiba didn't fall down but I accidentaly lifted the cable while moving and causing the HDD to flip in the air - i caught it, it didn't fall nor was hit. But it was working at the moment of this incident so when I connected it to the cable again clicking sound appeared which became constant in rhythmical almost pattern and WIndows couldn't recognize disc.)

So I have a question. When the stuck head is moved off the platter and back to it's parked position, what is the action of the arm? Is the arm spring loaded? Does it want to stay in the parked position or does it freely float or move? The reason I ask is because I had an issue with my disk and the head was in the parked position but it appeared to be stuck or frozen. I gently checked for play with a screwdriver. It was stuck pretty good. I than applied pressure to the arm and it broke free but it now freely moves. It's not spring loaded. Non of the videos show how the action of the arm should be while parked. Thanks.
it depends on where the parking is. However there is a magnet that is pulling pushing the actuator arm which can cause it to jump or fly around. but these are only things one might come to learn as every single drive is different.

+Ruidwaun ElMahgiub you need to be able to determine for sure what the problem is. We use very expensive data recovery diagnostics equipment to do this. If you do not have this equipment you will be guessing and one wrong guess can cost you your data. For example, even if you properly did a head swap, and the drive still doesn't work because the problem was not the heads, but it was the firmware. You would not be able to solve it, in addition to incorporating extremely high risk that was unecessary in changing the heads. hope this helps a little

Yesterday, I somehow noticed my backup external drive doing the normal head movement playing in slight higher (But not too much) volume for a few times. It views data and files just fine though and it turns back to normal volume sound after a couple minutes and back to less noticeably to hear like what should happen usually. I wonder why that happens? The health of the drive still said "Good" and I didn't see anything wrong in the values. Why do hard drives sometimes trick you like that or something? Well anything that you would have available to you for drive health reporting would relate to the SMART data. This data is incomplete and only shows on a very basic level what is going on with the drive. If you have your drive almost full, it will make your drive work harder and hence may make it perform a bit louder at times. Also it could be sign your drive is beginning to fail. Healthy drives shouldn't make much more than a slight whirring noise.

The thing also, is you don't know for sure it's even required to get access to the data. It's not ALWAYS a heads problem with a clicking drive. My answer to you would be to send it to a company who can correctly diagnose it, and then has the experience and equipment to get your files back for you.

are those drives supposed to start from the middle or is this something wrong? because my drive sounds and acts like the one in the video besides it's starting from the outside of the disc and basically makes the same movements but mirrored. but my drive is supposed to start from the outside.

The first question to ask is does the data matter, or can you lose it? The next thing to do is avoid powering it on. The clicking can be caused by a few different issues, a couple of them can get worse and cause the data to be unrecoverable. The drive needs to be properly diagnosed to determine why it is clicking, and the best course of action required to solve it long enough to get the data off.

@@pventures6 I thought it was bollocks as well, but out of totally being desperate and lost hope. I wrapped the hdd in a plastic bag put it in the freezer for half an hour, then quickly took it out of the bag connected it to the pc via a cable. it worked enough for me to get the files off. then it went back to no go.. It's not bollocks, the theory behind it is, computers work much better in a freezing environment and no click noise, hot is no good. So soon as it warmed up it would not read click noise. I tried this some worked but not slim/pocket hdd's. If you don't believe it i don't blame you, this is not 'How to make crispy bacon in a microwave using tin foil'. I hate misinformation and the people who spread it, it pisses me off. So if ever you have a situation that you might wanna try this way, let me know if it worked for you. But you need to get the hdd very cold freezer not fridge, for 30 mins.. It did work for me.... Professional people charge extortionate rates to do an hours work and with no guarantee then they want payment, i come from the streets and i will find back street ways to get my shit of that hdd, for nothing...

Hi, I just noticed some clicking on my 4tb seagate external memory, but it's a more quite clicking, like you have to get really close so it can be heard. Btw, it was working perfectly 2 days ago. Normally, when it gets connected to the power source and to the USB port of the console, it automatically starts running and the blue light starts blinking, but this time that wasn't the case. You are asking for trouble after that point. Well that's definitely not normal. Drives can click and still work when they are failing however I would not trust the drive at all. Are you running a RAID? What type of drives they are? Type of clicking sounds (loud, faint, how may seconds apart, duration)? Have been making the sound since the beginning? Is the clicking definitely your hard drive, or could it be the CD player? I would keep all your data backed up if it is the drives.

My hard drive was clicking and wouldn't load Windows anymore. I booted Linux Mint from the DVD and noticed I could still read data. I backupped most of the data on a series of USB pen drives, before the drive died completely. When the drive died, I put in a spare. Everything went better than expected.

my drive started clicking and i immediately put in a spare. Never tried recovering the data yet. Not too optomistic.
if you cannot determine why it is clicking there is very little chance to recover the drive. No one should be optimistic about self attempts at data recovery. That would be like going into the garage and pulling your car engine out without ever having done it before. :)

I say shut up and eat your steak. it IS a very informative video that any person facing a hard drive problem for the 1st time should see.....or hear lol. OK my steak analogy is off. Lets try this.... It is like going to the movie show expecting to see a movie staring the 3 stooges, but instead you get to listen to your favorite 3 piece band. @ TheCanadianLanBoy this would be considered previously worked on once you do that. We recommend doing nothing to the drive or its components as this can cause more damage to the drive.
One should never turn on a drive that has been dropped if the data is critical. The heads may have made contact with the platter, or a few other things may have happened. You wouldn't necessarily know what to look for unless you have experience working with these types of situations. Performing any more procedures besides closing the drive up and sending it to a professional will likely cause the data to be unrecoverable if it's not already.
The reason why your drive is clicking should be explained in the video. There is no easy fix to a dropped drive that has been damaged. The heads probably made contact with the platters, or came out of alignment. Changing the heads may be necessary but it may not even matter. You need to know what to look for on the platters and the heads to see if there is truly damage. If the drive was on, I guarantee there is damage to the platters.

The title is misleading. No one likes wasting time. This guy doesn't explain how to fix anything, just gives examples of cause. So people respond with a dislike. Logically.
