    Awesome video! Thanks again for posting! I've taken HD's apart knowing they would be destroyed in the process, and it's baffling how easy you make it look. I've struggled removing the head arm most of time and again, I wasn't the most gentle while doing so either. :)

    I have an issue with a dead toshiba laptop drive, its does not spin up or read at all, on the inside the motor moves freely, platters look good, the heads look fine, and the pcb has no damage? Any idea what could be the problem!

    Great videos I'm learning a lot thank you. 2 questions:
    1) I have a WD20EADS Black ext backup drive that dropped on a carpeted floor. Now it spins up but windows can no longer read. I looked for another new drive to use parts from but I notice the MFG date and DCM# is different. What are the chances that this drive's board and internal parts will work for repair?
    2) I'm comfortable learning anything technical and would like to persue leaning hard drive repair. I have about 50 drives (and several computers) I've accumlated over time and would like to teach myself as much as possible. My question is, what is the best place t0 buy the CORRECT tools, adapters, clean environment cabints etc. ?
    Thanks!

    Hi, Do you use new hard drives as "organs donor" (i don't know how I should call that in english) to fixing the broken ones? And if you do, those new hard drives can be reassembled and work fine? Also it's securely possible to use parts of broken HDs to attempt to recover the HDs of clients? Thanks.

    Do HDD manufacturer make their own heads or do they reuse latest standards so to say?

    Man I can't stop watching your videos.
    I have taken a leap of faith and brought a dozen or so hard drives to have a bit of a look and have a go at taking them apart. I know it is not going to be easy as you show it in your videos, but you never know unless you have a try and see what happens.
    Is there any other real tips or even just some basic info in like what say toshiba drive parts are compatable with other toshiba drives? or for any other brands?
    Thanks again for your great videos

    My hard drive arm keeps moving back and forth and beeping sometimes. It's like it's trying to find something. In disk management it was black so I did whatever to turn it blue but it never completed so I gave up. Kept saying formatting but it never finished. A 1 foot drop in a box killed it.

    Thank you for the interesting video. May I ask you some questions?
    1) Why are you actually moving the U12 IC from one PCB to another? With PC3k you can read the ROM of the passport drive with the Serial Interface and write it with the SATA Interface to the SATA PCB. I think, it's much faster then the chip transfer. And you can reuse the SATA PCB more times.
    2) On the first WD Blue drive you did't use the HDD Surgery Ramps, but just heat shrink tubes. Is there a reason?
    3) May be you can help me a little bit with one case. Currently I have a WD Passport drive with the wd20nmvw-11AV3S0 HDD inside. This drive has 8 heads. One (afaik 7 of 8) is not reading at all. I tried to get a cheap donor drive, but it was impossible. The price is about 200-300$ for a working drive. On the other hand you can get 2TB Notebook drives for about 60$. How are you handling such cases and finding a donor?

    • @hddrecoveryservices
      @hddrecoveryservices  7 лет назад +6

      hey, awesome questions.
      1) just a habit, but I should really start doing it the solderless way.
      2) I will check the family of the blue drive and post in here on Monday, but they do have a 2 disk ramp in that kit that lines up with that family
      3) as long as the family is the same donor should work regardless of the spec. I use desktop donors all the time, as long as they have a SATA version of the same PCB they are really good to me. Then there is also this: ruclips.net/video/bN8uwV7udtI/видео.html
      but I have not ran into a swap case where I needed to perform such adaptation. Like I said WD is very good for taking parts as long as family is same.

    Hy.I'm from Croatia and would like to know a few questions if possible.BTW just found about you and just subed!Amazing skills and video.About the qustions.I have a Hitachi 3.5" 640gb hdd and its doing that famous death clicking.Opened it up to see and it's scratched circularly from the head and the scratch is at the inner end of the disc,almost at the very end.My conclusion is that theres alot of data before the end to be recovered so thats why I kept the drive for so long waiting for the tech to get better.Seeing you it did!So can some data be recovered and what would be the price?On the drive its not more than half on it to be recovered maybe arround 200gb.P.S.The data to be recovered its all pics and videos of my dearest memories of my life and a majority of my ex girlfriend and me.Thanks in advance.Zoki.

There is an expensive tool that you can get that works with Seagate drives, but not sure if you need a different tool for each drive manufacturer, because I do not know if the platter spacing is the same for each. Any comment?

    I have a seagate freeagent Goflex 1 TB external Hard drive which has a very very strange issue. It gets detected by the computer and I am able to open the drive too. But browsing through the files is very very slow and I am unable to even play a single video. I can merely see what files are present within the disc. The disc keeps making a small clicking sound every 5-10 seconds even when its not being accessed. The only advice Ive got is to format it but i wish to try and save data. What could be the problem?? Thnx in advance

    Question.. what would be the issue of doing a head swap and trying to run the drive without using those fancy utilities like building a head map or imaging the drive. Why not just run it?

    • @hddrecoveryservices
      @hddrecoveryservices  4 года назад

      what could go wrong if surgery is done without monitoring equipment? Surely enough in some conditions, it can be performed, but why would you want that? Hard drive after a head swap is not a brand new hard drive, and most of the time it will have problematic areas. Many things can go wrong. The operating system is not designed to work with failing hard drives. Disk imaging tools and utilities help to prep the drive for the safest extraction.

    Excellent video. I have a question, and thanks in advance:
    You recommend R-Studio in the description. During the last couple of days I have been playing with its demo and some other data recovery programs. The GUI looks indeed very technical focused, but I have not found it superior than other programs like for example Getdataback in what it can find on different data-loss situations.
    Do you think that R-Studio is really that good compared to the other offers for rescuing data from logical failures? What do you think it is that makes it so special?
    I really value a professional opinion like yours on this topic. You find too much rubbish on the review lists published on the internet. Most of these articles with review ranking lists are already payed upfront by one company.

    • @hddrecoveryservices
      @hddrecoveryservices  7 лет назад

      Thorz r-studio supports almost every single operating system, it has virtual Raid reconstruct or with auto detect, it can link to a deepspar imager, or can create images while skipping bad sectors. The list goes on. I prefer UFS explorer to RStudio for my own work, but for consumer RStudio is as best as it gets. I haven't used getdataback for nearly a decade because last I've used it it was crappy.

Usually, those cases requier amputation of heads on scratched levels, disk cleansing if needed, multiple head replacement, lots of swearing, and tons of patience. On ocasion we get cases like this, but there is a lot of elements in the process. If you have a scratched drive and need your data, you need to take it to a pro. Watching video and seeing how it is done is not going to help.

    Help, I have important data in my 2.0 USB SATA hard drive. Just recently, the drive does spin but it remains undetected. I have tried open the case and the head is just in place, nothing seems stuck. What are the possible solutions?

    • @terrymulvaney3046
      @terrymulvaney3046 7 лет назад

      if it's a usb sata, put the drive back together and plud ir into your desktop, or juat replace the usb/SATA board. bout 5-9 dollars on ebay.
      this the usual problem with those things. they automatically get 5v from the usb port so they spin up but cos the USB/SATA converter doesnt convert so nothing gets sent through to tell the system that the drive is alive and ready.
      so therefore the system doesn't recognise its there

    sir what if in case of pcb is burned and adaptive data chip failed. does plater swap resolves the problem

    • @hddrecoveryservices
      @hddrecoveryservices  7 лет назад

      no platter swap only resolves issues related to the motor. Platters only get swapped if motor is burnt, or seized, or contaminated by water damaged sometimes. adaptive data inside of the eeprom chip on WD can easily be rebuilt, but if you have a seagate I dont know a way to assist

    Hello
    When You make a headswap on wd drive, you only swap heads? or you swap ROM too? Best regards

    • @hddrecoveryservices
      @hddrecoveryservices  7 лет назад +1

      if you use original board, then you keep it original.

    • @qdrms7459
      @qdrms7459 7 лет назад

      If i good understand :-) You swap donor heads to the patient hdd - and leave original ROM and Original Board patient if is 100% working. Yes? :-) i'm sorry if my question is not understand :-)

    Internal Seagate Barracuda 500GB drive spins up and spins down and then stops spinning. It causes NTLDR is Missing Error. HDD intact and was never dropped.

    What are the little yellow things you stuffed under the heads before removing the assembly? Normally you'd used a special tool for this, right?

    • @hddrecoveryservices
      @hddrecoveryservices  6 лет назад

      exactly, most of the time we would use a head comb for head removal. those are just spacers to keep heads apart and prevent touching.

    • @Wyr3d
      @Wyr3d 6 лет назад

      Fair enough.
      Hey, how come you make an image of the drive each time? Can't you just copy the files directly?

      Wyr3d that's a huge nono in data recovery.

      How come?
      I have a HDD that crashed last summer. The drive was readable, so I shut it down, and bought a new drive. I didn't have my rig with me (former PC engineer), so I sent it into a repair shop. The idiots I sent it to (PC World chain store) insisted I have a fresh installation on the new drive rather than simply ghosting the data across as I would have done, and then transferring the data afterwards.
      They had my stuff for over two weeks (I was quoted a few days, and "a week at the most") and when they called to say my laptop was ready, I had to ask for my HDD - which they had "misplaced". When I got to the store a technician was "working" on my laptop stating the HDD wouldn't read.
      I noticed it was now clicking also. I believe they dropped my HDD making the problem worse that it was initially. What was probably just stuck heads, is now broken heads most likely - long story short, never take anything into that chain-store's "Know How department" as thy only know how to break shit. ==
      Anyway, I only really need a couple folders with some files, not the whole drive, which is 1TB. I already bought a donor drive, and was thinking of just swapping the heads out and taking the files I need. The rest isn't important to me, so it doesn't seem worth imaging the whole drive if I can just get the specific files I need.
      Won't it work? I've already wasted money on this, and I don't wanna spend the ridiculous prices I've been quoted here (UK) for data recovery services (I got quoted something like when it's just a few files I want.

      unless you do this every day, I would not recommend just swapping heads. It looks easy in my videos, but only because I've been doing this stuff for 12 years now, since 2005. If you do anything for 12 years - you will make it look easy :). Is it a WD drive?
