I just found your channel today. Very timely for me. Im 56. Over the past year ive lost 85 lbs BUT I just started walking last week. Im glad i found you at this time.🎉
To say to much talking is a ridiculous comment as this is an information video. Thank you for all the helpful information. Walking is great exercise. Thank you.
@@SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen Yes to don't add weight but also avoid steep hills and stairs. I ruined my knees by doing steep hills, wasn't thinking at the time that the arthritis in my metatarsal "should have" warned me the arthritis would end up in my knees. Duh!!! I would do a V shaped staircase for 112 steps for extra cardio each day and also walked steepest hills for cardio not realizing this was the worst thing for arthritic people to do as this is excessive wear and tear on the knees. I ate lots of fruits and veggies, had flax oil and olive oil each day, plus turmeric, wore "Crocs" due to their cushioning effect, also weight lifting for bones, and walking to maintain health and stay off medication for arthritic pain and it worked! EXCEPT I did damage because arthritic people should avoid stairs and hills if possible.
Some really great advice here! As a ChiWalking Master Instructor I'd like to respectfully share that heel striking can actually cause injuries. In ChiWalking, we land on the back half of the foot to avoid too much impact. I also love to belly breathe and nose breath when I'm walking. Thanks for sharing these great ideas!
Excellent tips on walking. I walk outside about 6 or 7 days a week for 1 hour alone. There are some hills, special walking path etc. I'm 86 years young and in great h😊😊😊ealth. I've met so many wonderful other walkers who are younger over the years. It's the highlight of my day.😊😊😊
I have also used the Leslie Sansone RUclips videos. I might use them again to get that aerobic exercise. I do Qi Gong at home, but that is more a meditation, breathing & gentle movement.
Sophie, I find your Chanel quite challenging 😊 what is exactly an opposite to my current approach to myself. My whole life I was very strict and demanding toward myself , so now I am hesitant to challenge myself while walking. Right now I am more looking for pleasure than results. Thank you ❤
I got my frenchie a running stroller because she can’t go as fast or far as I want to😂 I have turned into the women I used to laugh at with dog joggers😂 love it- getting older (48) and idc!! I have to say, we bring a lot of smiles and startles to people 😂
P. S. Your points about the forest bathing and the breathing are spot on. Being mindful of the environment and focusing on your breathing can transform your exercise session into a meditative session. And just as our Lamaze breathing techniques got us through labor, breathing techniques can help you power through. I don't care to exercise with others (but that is my preference; it would be motivating to most normal people!) except my canine companions. I live in a rural county. I have a small neighborhood. I would start out with my dogs and along the way other dogs in the neighborhood would join in. I was like the pied Piper. So long ago. I'm 64 this year, and regrettably have been sedentary for too long. It's been nice to recommit.
This is the first video from you I have just watched. Thank you very much for covering this topic. I found every bid of information very meaningful and helpful. ❤
Confession: I'm a wee bit geeky. One of the things that I have found helpful for both motivation and safety is using a heart rate monitor (the chest strap with mobile app). It will (1) allow you to do some initial assessments of your current cardiovascular fitness through a series of tests; (2) enable you to visually see the load on your heart (I'm partial to Polar; their H-10 strap connects to your mobile app--back in the day (2000+) the data was transmitted through "morse code" through computer microphone) while you are exercising; (3) importantly! prevent you from overtraining and derailing your fitness motivation (yes, even with your walking if you are pushing your heart into higher zones due to sedentary start point or hills on your walk). It is easy to embrace in our head a more ambitious cardio plan than our body can undertake.; and (4) allow you to see your progress--which is the best payoff! It also tracks your walk/run. What is progress? Doing more with less heart effort. You will see empirically the improvements from your session data as well as how much better you feel.
Yes, all the info is good and I benefit from repetition! I’m 88, have walked, usually fast, all my life but need more motivation to walk regularly due to Covid. Thank you for all the info in your video ❤
Hokas are excellent! New Balance Kaiha Road Fresh Foam sneakers are another great brand . I’m recovering from foot surgery and I am amazed at the difference they make! I also wear wrist weights while walking.
Hello! I have just found your channel and I am finding it very informative 😊 Love this video, walking is so important... inspirational! Also, your home is beautiful and looks so tranquil, do you believe that our surroundings contribute to our well being? Would love a home tour and your tips on interior design for this. On a side note may i ask the paint shade and make of your exterior masonry paint please? It looks so pretty against the white windows. Thank you so much and I will enjoy the rest of your videos ❤
I walk 3 miles and I find I get to zone 3 alot. I am obese. I have been doing it since August . I am not finding much success. I say I walk 4 or 5 times a week. I am 61 almost 62. I just was wondering if going to fast. I do hills weighted vest . My walks take about 64 minutes . Usually 3.4 miles. I try to run at the end. I eat healthy. Lol. Just lost. My walks sau 3 2 on up pace.
Success as in weight-loss? My thought is, you might be doing too much? If your body is processing it as stress it could be keeping your cortisol levels high and you will not let go of weight if that's the case. Perhaps you need more recovery time. You also might need to add a weight lifting routine every second day and focus more on that than cardio ..
I work on concrete all day with steel toe shoes and by the time I get home my feet bottoms hurt and my ankles are sore. when I go the get up after setting my feet and ankle hurt. Not sure what to do I think my safety shoes are my problem. I am overweight at 235 and I need to loss my weight so bad to feel better. I started this weekend to walk 30 mins around my yard and I am doing that each evening when I try to track my food or steps I always quite due to to much to track and it makes me feel like a failure and i always stop I think just getting out there and walk for 30 mins helps my mind think yes, I can do it. I have so much inflammation in my body I hope walking will help this is what is pushing me to get out there each day .. and listening to the birds help my mind.
Defy gravity sneakers have helped and magnetic socks. The support from them is very supportive. I am also over 200 pounds. Good luck. Its a mindset. David goggins has help shift my focus. He's got a potty mouth. But I relate to his story.
I feel for you. When the body is inflamed it is first because of the bad quality of the food that make you feel hungry all the time and tired. Get rid of the processed food, fried food, juice, soda, and sugar. They literally are killing you. Reduce carbs to the minimum, add a ton of fresh/frozen veggies, fresh fruits, fish, good quality proteins (beans, meat, yogourt) and nuts, seeds. Cook yourself: meal prep can help you to reduce the time you need. You need to sleep 8 hours a day as it is the best medicine. Fast one day per week to rest your whole body and reduce your inflammation.
@@chrystelelacroix4681 I am working on just that cleaning up all foods and I am growing a lot of my food these days also. @carolinewilhite6362 what are you basing this statement on? Frankly, I don't believe your statement to be objectively true. As well...ALL exercise correlates to a rise in cortisol - a temporary rise. Confusing. I’ve heard physical therapy experts say that heel strikes cause more stress.
You don't have to whack your heel down - it's just being away of the natural heel strike action.
Loved.your video but the intro is too long for me. Not sure I’ll keep my subscription.
Thanks for the feedback - I've been considering shortening it.
The fast forward button works quite well.
Zone two is not good for fat loss. It can actually cause your cortisol to raise which causes belly fat.

Yes - releasing unwanted weight first is important and a very good point when it comes to adding weights to your walk!

If you start adding hills (sit) you’ll get out of zone 2
