This new Arc seems to be the Hunter Exam Frieren version. I was not expecting Frieren and Fern to get separated but that could lead to interesting develppments.
I already like the 3 new girls introduced this episode (and I already see the fanarts incoming...)
Also I don't know why but the little birdies turning into mach2 fighter jets made me burst out laughing. It's Frieren so I knew the birds would not be defensless. But still, I was just expecting some small magical spells, not turning themselve into bullets.
And Übel, being voiced by Ikumi Hasegawa, already had my interest piqued. To know she's a baddie which is so against type for Hasegawa's usual roles makes me even more excited!
And a sudden Kraft cameo just made me grin from ear to ear. More Koyasu more better!
Come to think of it, I believe the scene between Übel and Kraft may be the first time the VAs that gave us Lena and Roswaal shared the stage!
having read the manga Ubel isn't bad she is more complex and hard to pin down trust me your expectations about Ubel are going to flipped on their head

It’s ok Frieren,we love you the way you are. Also the new girl is a psycho,it’s a different feeling when you look at a character before they even talk and you already know they are trouble

Normally, as soon as any Japanese fantasy utters the words "Magic Academy", I would roll my eyes and quote Carl Johnson from GTA San Andreas.
But when said fantasy is Frieren, I instead drop everything I'm doing, and watch carefully.
The fact that I know this arc with last at best 3 episodes, but they will feel like they were a full cour even if I will also bitch and complain that we got only at best 30 minutes worth of anime, makes me happy.
Such is the beautiful paradox of Frieren.
No wasting time with classes or what not. It's exam time, and already Frieren is catching the interest of the professors, while old mages in the know wonder at her ultimate power. All while she low key instructs a pair of bickering, fledgling BFFs.
In no particular order, we get some extreme bird watching (that little orange bird should be named "jetbird"), a bit of bonding, ye mandatory Himmel being best boy moment (love how Frieren pats Fern's head for uttering Himmel's exact words), and Stark just sleeping soundly in the library, because he is a man of action, not books.
Seeing Kraft again was nice, and psycho mage girl will be interesting to watch interacting with Fern.
Will master and apprentice pass the certification? Will one of them flunk? Will the faculty realized what an impressive archmage has come to their humble institution?
I'm not dipping into the manga until the anime is done. I'm waiting patiently for next Friday.
Because with Frieren, you just sit down and enjoy the journey.
I don't know why I laughed every time Frieren popped up in this episode with her bemused look at how the two people she was partnered with were interacting. I will be curious to see what may happen if/when someone at the magic city figures out who she is.
When the word gush hasn't been in your vocabulary until gushing over magical girls aired this season.
Yea I’m curious if we’ll ever see a match between fern and frieren in the manga because it would be an interesting bout to see. Like if you remember during the arc with the demons when fern question if she could beat them frieren said that her talent is she can fire spells rapidly consecutively in succession which could even overwhelm frieren. But frieren has a larger pool of mana as we saw with Aura and 1000+ of training some years under flamme. Fern would have to try to end it quickly otherwise dragging it out works in frieren favor.
It's really hard to pick a favourite episode from all of the ones we've had.
My favourite parts have to be the Aura stuff and the stuff with Sein and while he was in the party.
But this arc I know is gonna be even better.
Übel is gonna be a problem but I didn't expect a cameo from our best elf monk Kraft who saved those bandits from meeting their God a little too soon.
Yeah I can't wait for some of those simps in the anime community going 'I can fix her'.
Trust me, she doesn't look fixable.
I love how this show never feels like it's doing the same formula. Every arc and every episode so far has been something different whether it be world building, magic, some fights, character development and general slice of life at times but it is NEVER boring.
All the praise goes to the writer and the staff who made this masterpiece possible for the viewing audience.
But the magic exam is definitely different from other anime. Instead of working with who you know. They are forced to work with random people and boy Frieren just has the worst luck. She had to babysit two children before and she has to do that now as well.
It's just hilarious but I like the two girls as annoying as they can be with their constant fighting and bickering over every little thing, Frieren can see they have potential as mages.
It was really funny how the bird flies as such a speed it blows everything away and splashes them with water 🤣
I can't wait to see where we go from here.
Poor Stark though. He's gonna be chilling through most of this arc and we actually may have seen the last of him for a while.

Somehow, I get the feeling that, fifty years later, Frieren will meet again those two. And they will be two old prunes but they will still pull each other's hair out. And Frieren will just be like "you still can't get along".
That is, if they don't die along the way.

The start of this video is just as hilarious as when i first saw that scene animated 😂😂😂 they made it feel x3 savage with all the emphasis shots on Fern honestly, it’s sooo funny!!
Absolutely cannot wait for this exam arc. My favorite parts of it are yet to come but I think they made all these introductions to the characters and the world’s magic system is so smooth and easily digestible in info. Also, even tho Fern and Frieren ended up in diff teams, I realize how much more I appreciate the new ED visuals being so centered around them because it wouldn’t feel like they’re apart 🥺

As soon as you see her sanpaku eyes you know she's trouble.
Frieren really did knock it out of the park this episode. As I once again loved every second of it. From how Frieren was displeased that she could not rest on Fern lap anymore. As Fern now have a “build in sun cover” 🍈🍈
To then we see a new mage who looks really beautiful with green hair named Ubel. That was about to deal with some bandits before Kraft made a cameo and saved the day. Saved the day for the bandit that is as they now can live for another day. Seeing how Ubel is the one who killed some previous bandits. And I just to say Ubel seem to be pretty good waifu material so far.
Then during the first grade mage test. Frieren got paired up with two young mages who fights all the time. And I just loved Frieren meme face every time they did that😂 we got to know that their name is Lawine and Kanne. And they really seem to be the new ship in this show. Seeing how Lawine called Kanne cute in a flashback. Also that bird that they tried to capture did not predict that it would be able to do super Sonic flight. Which will make them that much harder to catch.
Then I agree that it probably is a conspiracy to make the episodes shorter. As now it almost felt like they cut the episode mode sentence lol
This was another great episode of Frieren imho. I hope it works out for both Fern and Frieren, but I guess it's possible neither of them pass and they have to recruit another mage into their party for their trip... and great seeing Kraft the monk again. Also, we had another cool giant bird battle this episode and the art and animation continue to excel imho. Some of the new mage characters definitely have head-strong personalities, and though not all of them are good it seems Frieren may have lucked out for her party. Anyways, I'm looking forward to the next episode and the completion of the first test.
It was hilarious when Frieren said Can't focus on the sky when its only half. You can she is salty and jealous. That being sad its interesting to see how this test will go and that they are put with other peoople and will work together in order to pass.

As a manga reader, the fleshing out of all the new characters we get in this arc (no matter how much time we get with each of them) is a highlight of the arc. I'll say no more about that.
The only issue I can see, looking back from having just watched the next episode, is that the pace of adaptation has noticeably sped up. Prior to now, it was a religiously consistent two chapters per episode, but we're definitely faster than that since the test started, to the point that the pacing actually feels faster. Maybe it's just because action takes longer to frame in manga than it does on animation, but any change in method for an adaptation that up to this point has arguably been the single most faithful manga to anime adaptation of all time is going to make me nervous. Well, I guess we'll see...

Why people treating her like a villain. She just logical and kills when it needs to be done. Also really busted mage. Magic that cuts through near everything and the ability to copy spells by empathizing.
Her magic doesn’t cut through anything, only things that she can visualize cutting like cloth and hair. She couldn’t, for example, cut through an enchanted shield, yet cat cut through a cloak that was enchanted to be much stronger then that shield.
@@doriankromer168 i mean i said near anything… and i didnt want to explain further. As long as she trains and gets to that point where she can visualize the sky is the limit. They already established magic is limited by the users ability to imagine/visualize and mana.
The fact that Kraft the previous hero consider her skillful mage says a lot

they misinterpreted Ubel, what happened 2 years ago was an accident, not intentional, it happened because was really strong with her ability.

Gushing seems to be a thing the next weeks thrown into everything huuu.
I think Frieren might be "weak" against humans in magic as she specialised in Anti-Demon magic. That said i guess it has to be a genius human mage that is comparable to Frieren. Also i think it is just in Frierens nature to downplay her abilities just as she is limiting her Mana. That said im sure she can loose. I feel like old man Voll also stated(as even the best warriors can easily fall to fatal blows), in this world there is no single Overpowered supreme Force, like a Ainz or Rimuru, that is unbeatable. Mortality plays a big role in the storytelling and after all even the demon king fell by the party of the "fake" hero
This episode, ending when it did, cock-blocked me more than the guy who told me he had liquor back at his apartment when I was coming down off of meth but then we got there and there was no liquor.

Maybe it’s a plot hole but how did they meet the requirements the last time to get past this area of the north unless Hieter was strong enough to be a first class Priest 80 years ago and the talent was less
The requirements have changed over time.
Is what I gathered.
It was kinda explained at the start, the Northern plateau has always been a dangerous place, so you "need" to bring a powerful priest and mage to enter there, "need" but not required legally.
Now there's some serious thing happens in the northern plateau (which we don't know about) so you're legally required by the authorities to bring a powerful mage with you.
No it's not the same in War Era
It's not a plot hole. There's a perfectly reasonable reason for that. They should reveal it soon. Next episode or the one after that.
If you know German, all the names are a huge spoiler
If this story was even the smallest bit more aimless, you could call it the Odyssey. It's completely episodic and nothing, that happens in any one episode actually matters or even sticks most of the time. These 18 episodes could probably have been condensed into 7 episodes.
