Maybe build a fireplace I found on Pinterest it looks like it's pretty easy if my husband doesn't want to do it I could do it by myself because I've made a concrete wall before and I love this idea I'm going to be making me one for my yard which is at the very beginning wish me luck in your yard looks amazing
@@cindymcgraw5261 Thank you! We have been debating about a fireplace or firepit. Our only worry is having the kids around it so maybe when the youngest is a little older. =)
Going to garden classes with your mom is such a wonderful personal investment. This knowledge that you have gained will influence all 3 generations in your family.
I would recommend at least two or three compost bins to have the ability to turn the compost over for a better result and for having compost available all time.
This backyard is lovely! And I'm sorry if I'm being nosy, I'm a physical therapist and it's very hard for me to not point that out, but have you ever considered buying stools to sit while working on the veggie boxes? If it's for short amounts of time, squatting is the best solution, but for gardening (longer amounts of time), sitting is the best way to work. Bending down puts SO MUCH strain on your back, and adding the repetitive nature of gardening to it, this posture will certainly hurt your backs
That is actually a vine called potato vine and we were shocked at how fast that grew! We are thinking of adding it to more places in the backyard since it has grown so fast and the flowers look so pretty.
I love what you are doing and especially love you are doing this with your whole family, including mom. I’m also in inland Southern California and we’re building our outdoor living area this summer. I hope our dining room will be year round. This is so wonderful to see. I’m calling our project Operation Oasis. It won’t be perfect but it will be home. ❤
Thank you so much! I love that project name what a wonderful place to relax in. We call our backyard the secret garden =) This project was worth the time and energy because now we all spend so much time out there all year long. I hope you are doing well =)
Your garden and backyard space is laid out so nicely; it looks so inviting and cozy! I also like all of the privacy you have. Levi looks like he's enjoying himself as he's helping you while you're gardening. Tfs.
Beautiful transformation, Shannon! This video shows the way I remember of the California sun! With all the rain you all have been getting this past winter, your yard is going to look amazing, if it hasn't already! We were in a condo with a small patio, too, as you have described and have been grateful for a yard to create a small garden now. We do a mix of differnet gardening methods but yes we started with Mel's Squarefoot garden as well, years ago! Gardening is our family's love language now! 🥰
Thank you! We feel the same way about gardening. It's so fun and a great way to get everyone outside and involved with nature =) I hope you are having a nice Sunday.
Your yard is an absolute gorgeous oasis!! I don’t remember you mentioning receiving any professional landscape design consulting. If that is true, you both have so much talent! I’m so happy for your family. Enjoy!
We usually eat all of it as it ripens 😊 there is rarely anything leftover. But it feeds our family of 5 and my parents take some too and we share with neighbors ❤️
Shannon, wonderful video. So interesting to see. Grant's planter box transformation was beautiful to see. I love your and your Mom's hats. Really great for that bright California sun. Cheers
It's such a lovely and well-laid out backyard :) Thank you for letting us keep up with your progress! I'm very interested in your DIY projects. Also, my goodness, Levi is so big already :O I think it's great you're involving your sons with everything you're doing, they're learning valuable life skills and have fun at the same time. I would've loved doing that as a kid.
I love watching your videos I also love seeing your Mom joining in with your gardening! Also enjoy seeing your family the boys are growing up so fast!! And you have a wonderful handyman ❤. Your yard looks fantastic 😊
I love square foot gardening. I find mine are always super productive and aesthetically pleasing. My beds are all recipe themed...eg salsa, salad, pickled, juice, stir fry, roast, soup, tea, pantry(think dried beans, seeds and spices) and many others. I also have a 'Bush Tucker' garden as I live in Australia. It's an eclectic, whimsical garden using all methods of growing my food. It's so much fun being able to use my creativity.
Wow your garden sounds amazing! I love the idea of themed garden beds. It will be very interesting to see what we get this year =) It's always a surprise.

Morning Shannon! You & hubby are truly amazing! Your yard is beautiful in bloom🌺 Here in the east, we're not quite at patio season, yet. But I'm ready!😊
Good Morning! I hope you are doing well. We are also excited for more steady warm weather. Lately every other day it gets gloomy and rainy. I never know what to wear in the morning LOL.
Congratulations on taking a Master Gardening class! It’s a wealth of information and, as we can see, you have benefited from what you have learned and the hard work involved in making a beautiful garden area.
Looks awesome😊! So amazing how you can get such lush growth in less than a year. I look forward to veggie garden updates!👍 We won't plant our veg garden until memorial weekend probably. But we will get some seeds started in the greenhouse this week. The weather just needs to cooperate. We still freeze at night.😬 So sweet to see the little helper😘. Thanks for sharing.
What a beautiful transformation. We can definitely tell you and Grant took your time planning the change before executing the changes. Are you able to sit out and enjoy garden in the hot California summers? I am in Ontario, Canada with a much shorter planting season. My Grandfather was a farmer and said there is always chance of frost and don't plant a vegetable garden until after May 24 weekend.
Thank you! Yes we love sitting out there all year long (besides rainy days). The summer does get really hot around midday but the evenings are really great out there. We took a lot of time to plan everything. We just found a sketch we had drawn before starting the project and we were both surprised to see we pretty much did exactly what was planned LOL. I hope you are doing well and your grandfather sounds like a smart man =)
The yard looks really good, has matured beautifully. Even though it's a full yard, maintenance is much less than the standard grass ones, good plan. I really like that you have rocks, we don't have to them in my area in Florida, they're trucked in and sold by the pound, expensive. I like the look of rocks in a garden. The trellis is pretty with the flowers. My favorite is the ground cover, very nice. The "Little Helper" is getting so big!
Looking good! Weird way of the world these days..I’m so invested in your little house and yard! I love seeing what you are doing. So weird because, I mean I’m a busy mom too, lots going on, it’s not like I’m just living through another family haha. Maybe it’s like we watched tv series back in the day, now we watch RUclips channels and get hooked! Keep up the good work!

Wow! Your yard looks amazing. We live in NE Indiana & we can't plant our garden until next month because it's still cold. It was in the upper 30's last night & the high in the 40's today. Brrr. We love eating veggies from our own garden. I want to look into getting heirloom veggies. 😊
Hello, Thank you! We are also looking into planting heirloom veggies, that is something we learned about in our garden class. There is so much to know with gardening, but it's lots of fun too.
@shannontorrens1 oh, thank you. Yes, they are green all year here in Florida, too. I've just never seen one with blooms here. Thank you for responding. Have a great day.
Shannon, your bacyard looks AMAZING!! I live in CO and you have inspired my husband and I. With all the concrete in your backyard, does it feel hotter in the summer?
Thank you! We didn't add any concrete (but there already was a lot), the pavers are porcelain and they stay cool. The flagstone pathway gets hot to walk on if you have bare feet. We do get a lot of shade from the neighbor's tree and we have 2 shade cloth triangles that help with shade too. It gets hot here in the middle of summer, but I guess because we have shade over most of the concrete areas it doesn't feel hotter. I am looking forward to when our trees get bigger so they will provide more shade =) I hope you are having a good weekend.
@@shannontorrens1 thank you for your quick response. I will be talking with my husband and hope to do something similar to your beautiful backyard.
