I got the 2021 Outback and love it. I’ve owned other Outbacks and can vouch for the continuous AWD safety benefits. In rainy weather and when rain turns to ice in an instant, I don’t have to switch to AWD or 4-wheel drive - it’s already on. I feel that my family is safer in that car than any other I’ve driven and you can’t put a price on that, brother. I’ve driven that car in serious snow and it’s just insanely competent. Picked up my kid during a blizzard when she was stuck at a rural airport an hour away and that car did it like a trip to the damned beach. The Toyota looks awesome. I’m sure it’s great. And, yes, technology in a Subaru can be meh, but the Outback has completely earned my trust where it matters.

I have a 2012 2.5i Limited Outback. Totally agree. Even though it's ten years old now, which is crazy to think 2012 was ten years ago, it still handles everything phenomenally. It doesn't have the latest and greatest offroad features on newer Outbacks, but it still pulls through any type of snow or thunderstorm conditions. It is slow, but it's not dangerously slow and it can pass on highways and up mountains. Not that bad of a rig

Where the Outback really shines is when you compare mid level trims. You get so much more in the Outback and no up-charge for the -all wheel drive. Also for anyone going off-road, there is no comparison to the Subaru and Xmode. I have had Toyota's and now have a 21 Outback as my first Subaru. I am single and just could not justify the extra cost for the Toyota. Subaru won for value in my comparison but they are both great vehicles. If you are in kid rearing mode, I would lean to the Toyota, more like a minivan. If you an empty nest and outdoors seeker, I would lean toward the Subaru. Great job in this review!

I agree, went with the 2021 Premium without the added options and I feel like what you pay for in terms of value is awesome. I do not have Remote start as I have to insert key to turn ignition but its not a deal breaker and plus the Subaru App has the remote start integration.

Tbh I think the better comparison is between the new Outback and new Toyota Venza that’s coming later this year which is actually a midsize suv. The Highlander is a three-row suv that competes with other larger suvs. The new Subaru Outback XT is a great car though and it’s quicker than the BRZ and even a WRX with the same CVT transmission. Also, the rear seat backs in the Outback can be reclined.

The Subaru DOES have a wireless charger and the back seats do have adjustment for recline. I looked at both, for top trim I could not justify 10000.00 more for the Toyota when the third row was not really useful for more than a package shelf.

The prop rods are being moved from the rad support to the hood because hoods are shifting to aluminum vs steel. You could accidentally dent or damage your aluminum hood attaching a prop rod to it, you cannot damage the steel rad support attaching a prop rod to it.

Outback Limited owner for a month now, not quite this trim, but wasn't worth $2 grand more for a sunroof, their navigation (still got the big display w/o) & one more option I don't recall. Taken 2 road trips, 2nd one 2200+ miles in 6 days...soooo comfortable! Never sore back. All items he reviewed work as advertised...found most, probably some I'm still exploring as there are so many. 4 banger power does lack for high speed passing but plenty torque for hill climbing and averaged 32+ miles at 70-80 mph (limit is 80 in Utah!). Highlander may have some additional features & power, but out of my current price & I wanted the proven offroader as well.

We have a 2018 Highlander XLE. I will get the bench in the middle next time. 1. We are almost done with car seats (woot), and 2. with the 3rd row folded, items can shift and slide between the captains chairs. Note: I will not purchase another Highlander. I’m not happy overall with this one and just don’t like the interior of the 2020.

Jim Smith There is far too much lift on acceleration and dive when braking. It’s not real confidence inspiring during emergency maneuvers. It’s been reliable and fairly efficient, for a nearly 300hp V6. I have several vehicles on the replacement potential list. Everything from the sedans to S/CUVs. I like the Venza, Outback, and the facelifted Santa Fe that debuted yesterday. The Mazda6 and CX-9 (CX-5’s 2nd row is too small) are also on the list. The Highlander’s 3rd row was down 95% of the time, so no real reason for it.

Went with the Outback - have owned 1997 Outback and 2004 Highlander previously. Originally wanted the Hybrid Highlander but found (1) Headrests on Highlander don't tilt, and were intolerably uncomfortable - ultimately killed the Highlander for us. (2) Harder to see over the Highlander hood - car just feels harder to handle for city driving. (3) Outback a much better value. Wish I had the better city driving mileage with the Highlander; highway mileage is close between the two. I find the cargo space of the new Outback to be at least equal to my old Highlander, though certainly less than the new Highlander. Kids are grown so don't need the 3rd row anymore.

We have a 2019 Forester. My wife hates the auto start/stop and shuts it off every time she gets in the car. There is a simple button on the left side of the dash. If she had to go through the steps of finding it in the infotainment system, it would be a no sale for her. Another reason we went with the Subaru is that we could get a CD player so yes, there are people that still listen to CDs. I don't have one in my Cherokee and hate having to transfer my CDs on to a flash drive to use in the car.

My dad has had 2 Outbacks (currently a legacy, but misses his Outbacks), my step mom has an Outback... and they seem kinda perfect.. My brother has the new Highlander, and it's nice, too. I have a friend who owns an older Highlander and I never liked the third row, it shortened the storage area and I found the third row uncomfortable. The Outback has a nice storage area and the second row is nice enough for our needs. But that is the difference, your kids are small and they will have friends who you may need to tote around, we are past that stage (had a mini van at that stage) and as we are getting older I like the fact that the Outback is easier to load the roof racks and because it is lower it is also easier to wash. Yes, it is a bit smaller but for someone like me who has been driving large suv's and mini vans for the better part of 20 years I welcomed the come back to more of a sedan experience, no, it is not a sedan but it drives more like one and that is refreshing after all the suv's truck suspensions.

Got it, you like the Highlander, but this is a apples to oranges, as many have stated below, the Subaru Ascent versus Highlander would be a better comparison. And you compared the base engine with less horse power and torque. When I was shopping for vehicles I compared the Rav 4 to the 2020 Outback and the 2020 Subaru Outback Onyx XT is what I have in my garage and very happy with it. I noticed you did not mention fuel mileage as that would have been a win for the Outback (with either engine vs. non hybrid). I could go on, but I feel you missed on a number of points basically nullifying the value of this comparison.

Thanks for the video. As I’ve said before you provide great resources for how the vehicle will actually function for a driver/family. One suggestion as it is something I always ask at the dealership: how does the 3rd row handle car seats? I agree you and your wife (and I own one) a vehicle with captains chairs along with a 3rd row. The captains chairs normally have the car seats, but when grand parents visit or I have additional kiddos (friends/family) I want to make sure the 3rd row can handle car seats well.
I love that you showcase the forward facing and rear facing seats.
Well done and looking forward to the next video!

    • @__Paul__
      @__Paul__ 4 года назад

Not true. The Highlander with the 8-AT performs much better off road. Also, the CVT of the Subaru will get totally destroyed by the engine when going off road, especially in shifting traction during articulations, as well as pulsation of slipping and grabbing in slippery situations. Nothing will toast a CVT faster, especially the CVTs in Subaru.

Dave, this is an apples to oranges comparison. You should have done the Subaru Ascent vs Toyota Highlander. The Outback competes with the Honda Passport, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CRV. The Highlander competes with the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Subaru Ascent.

  • @happytreesllc6369

A more correct compering would be Outback vs, RAV4 (buy price, size, and seats). If you want to compare Highlander use Ascent as they are in the same category. All been said, thanks for your video.

Crazily enough, I’m actually trying to decide between the 2021 Highlander awd & the 2021 Outback right now. Have been test driving all week. Love the Highlander Platinum but also loving the Outback Limited XT or maybe even the Onyx. Fell in love with one in the showroom that was lifted & had a more rugged look. Only thing stopping me from buying the Outback today is there aren’t air vents in the back-back for our dog & to add the lift at Subaru costs an additional $5,500 (Unfortunately the showroom model already sold).
Wish i would just make up my mind already!

The Highlander has much more refinement, much higher quality, and it being Toyota, much higher reliability. The ride quality, interior, infotainment of the Highlander just blows the Outback out of the water. It is not even a fair contest, but even the Ascent wouldn't be any better. The Highlander is much higher quality build, much better engine, and much better transmission.

Even my 14 year old's lower back hurts horribly after a couple hours!! I am currently sitting on pillows both below and behind me so that I can travel in it. I touched base with the dealership today to either have them buy it back or buy different seats to install into it. I was debating about trading it in for a highlander depending on how the seats feel.

I’d imagine the prop rod location is an engineering decision. The location is not good, if you open your hood with your right hand and use your left to pull the prop rod down and accidentally lose grip of the rod it’ll fall directly to the fender and hit it. Thankfully the bottom of the rod has plastic on it but I could see this denting a car.

I have 2020 Outback and the HVAC still operates but does start to warm up. The climate control monitors the temperature and as it gets warmer the engine will restart. It depends on how warm the outside temperature is. If it's 90 degrees outside the engine should remain on. If it's 70 degrees outside the engine should stop for 15 to 30 seconds.

Agreed. It would have been much better, but everyone is going after the very best gas mileage, and at the expense of other areas. In any case, just go with the V6 gas engine. It is way better anyway. With a gas price of about $2.75, you are going to pay about $7.50 more "per tank" (read: by refill rate), over the hybrid. The savings is nowhere near enough. The hybrid is way more expensive no matter the scenario. There just isn't a wide enough gap in gas efficiency to make the hybrid worthwhile, at least in the Highlander or "Hy-Hi" as it is also called.
