Ever since Rudy began roasting his fans every thing i write I think"but would I show this to Rudy" and i believe it's pushed me to write much better music
genius
He would still hate it though
Roasting but with meaning
@@oddhead12 lmao
eh this is the most obvious comment which repeats in every roast video. Write something else bro
“I like power metal, I listened to it a lot back in the day”
“before I turned 12” LOL
haha it's so funny, generalizing every piece of music and bullying people who like it is what's metal is all about. another nugget of comedy gold from Rudy, I personally love metal music being the punchline of every single joke. it truly never gets old or boring to get another half an hour long video of this guy seething over metal genres while contributing nothing positive to the scene (or original music composition in general ) and hiding behind the veil of 'its a roast bro' every time.
I don't even like power metal myself but this dude is like the opposite of how a musician should carry themselves. Im guessing the big stacks of clickbait grift money might be a huge reason lol
@@Tanya-xs8zt He can compose and improvise good, EG: have you seen his submission to samuraiguitarist's unfinished song?
@@GammaFZ no I only listened 2 of his albums but one of those might have been an Animals as Leaders B sides, I'm not sure. I'll check out his submission but regardless of his talents as a musician he also has a responsibility to provide some form of counter balance to his negative comments instead of this basic dismissal of entire genres solely because of his personal taste in music so we don't end up with comment sections like this one where 99% of the posts are nothing but cringe jokes and legit hatred of music with a smug air of superiority
@@Tanya-xs8zt True you have a point, also I don't even watch these videos entirely because they're too long and are basically the same thing throughout. He is roasting after all as the title suggests so yeah. I believe he doesn't actually hate and dismiss the subgenres and genres
@@GammaFZ I appreciate you not jumping down my throat instantly and I mostly agree, I'd just prefer the uploader voicing his positive views on metal music from time to time inside the video and maybe even recommend bands that he thinks are worth checking out in the given genre that's all
Djent kids are mad about everything
I resent that, and you for saying it!
Mostly about their dads leaving, as far as i can interpret their lyrics.
its true we are
Most of it is driven by teen angst or unprocessed trauma, so yeah, it might be an emotionally immature crowd. But the main reason for the community's overall anger is probably the ridicule surrounding the musical elements of it. Zeros and stuff. That style redefined the use of guitar, turning away from virtuositic approach to a rhythmic/noisy one which is, imo, a far superior approach to any evergreen oldie or contemporary metal. Gatekeeping and elitism among metal fans must be eradicated AND immature butthurt bullshit among djent fans must go, too. Bottom line is, fuck people in general.
@@kakadu2004 cope
Its actually crazy how hard it is to compose something good. No wonder the entire metal community is about memes and shreding colabs only
@Agent 0-1-0 totally agree, sad to see that most peoples are already brainwashed and feel more comfortable listening to covers of polyphia/intervals rather than discovering new music 🤦♂️
Because everyone think they can do it just because they play an instrument. No shame in hiring a composer or making them a member of the band.
The problem is most of metal bands you see around here don’t actually know how to write music. They can play an instrument but they don’t know what music really is. I have a degree in classical guitar and pretty much everything is painfully bad now. Nothing is worse than djent, pop punk, and generic metalcore....except country, country is the ****ing worst.
The problem is people writing this garbage Rudy has to sit through don’t understand why the songs they are trying to copy work and so come across as copy cats at best, but typically fall flat on their face when they try and change a part of it. Just random repetitive riffs, the same progressions, terrible tone, no innovation at all. There are of course exceptions, but most bands who write good music know what they’re doing, sometimes instinctually, but almost always because they were taught it. Music is like calculus, most treat it like it’s addition.
There’s also the idea that if you play well you can write well when that just isn’t the case. I can play Mozart, Beethoven, Bach or whatever composers work you put in front of me, but if I tried to write something just based on the fact I can play them it would probably be terrible. If, however, I understand why they write the way they do and the underlying structure they use and the alternate ways they could have gone and how and why they differ from one another, then I would have a place to start.
The problem with alot of “prog metal” bands is they make this mistake. But it’s also possible to go way to far down the technical direction aka Dream Theater. Unquestionably talented musicians but just such flat, predictable music with no soul.
@@Pit_Lord Dude you've hit the nail on the head. I've been trying to get into music theory and write my own stuff and I couldn't quite place why I never really liked anything I did or why so many modern artists just come across as boring, even if they are technically impressive. Composition is very important, and I'm trying to learn more of how to go about that.
@@Pit_Lord Very well said. I also feel like most of these bands don't have anything to say, they sound kinda "fake".Pretty much like the whole metal scene which doesn't relate to this era anymore imho
‘One chord progressions’ - “is boring”
‘Two chord progressions’ - “ok but what is you”

"Is the joke here that the guitar is out of tune?"
Amazing
I really love the shape of your ears
A love comment? Strange.
this is so funny I need to go look at his ears now hahahah
oh fuck... I get it now lol
My only issue when writing a song is always more along the lines of, "I feel like I need to add more variation on this" or "I think this section repeats too much". And that's because I tend to write the music first and then write vocal lines. But then I run into the problem of, "Is this a melody line or a vocal line". So, never ending self doubt which causes me to either not finish a song or think it isn't good enough to release for people to enjoy.
Every day I pick up the guitar and think "But would I play this to Rudy" and then I say "No, clearly not" and go back to my soul-crushing desk job like a responsible adult.
I actually watch these while I’m writing music, your input helps me immmmmensly because it allows me to look at my way of writing in a different way, which in turn allows to expand my sound
I might’ve commented this on another video of yours, I forgor, but regardless, thanks!!!
I actually thought oddhead’s song was pretty decent. I didn’t care for the lyrics, but the singing and the rest of the music itself was pretty entailing for me. I might give it a listen myself. Of course, the music isn’t perfect or amazing, and absolutely no discredit to Rudy’s criticism.
It reminded me of Deftones. I'd probably listen to it again without the music video.

i like how he skipped through the Weiner song cuz there was nothing bad to say about it
Loved the floppy Weiner song. Great job Apomorph!
The issue is a giant misunderstanding of what makes music work. Music isn’t addition or subtraction, it’s calculus. Almost all of these bands have people who mistake playing an instrument for being able to write. They copy paste randomly from music they can play without any regard to whether it actually works or not. This is why so much of it sounds exactly the same...because it is.
Put it this way, I went to music school and studied classical guitar. Can I play music written by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Sor, Mozart? Absolutely. But could I write like them purely because I can read and play their music? Of course not.
If you go in blind, with no idea or why something works then copy it but with some “prog” progressions and chugging, or add pop music progressions to a canvas it doesn’t fit on, it’s going to be awful. Some people are born with instincts for inherent innovation, but it is exceptionally rare. Great music isn’t written by great performers, but by great musicians. If that wasn’t the case, music that has endured for centuries wouldn’t be limited to a handful of individuals.
Don’t get me wrong....It’s great that people want to play music and are driven to try and create, but it’s also created an ocean of garbage to sift through and made truly good music hard to find.
Well said. I think you're being a *little* harsh but I do agree. Too much imitation, not enough innovation. Not sure people are totally aware they're recycling ideas either.
Completely agree. About half a year ago I realized how little I knew and how much I was just imitating. Learning jazz theory and actually studying other guitarists has helped a ton and im still not even close to ready to write what I want to write. Ya gotta go all the way for this kinda shit
I don't even try the math portion of writing music. I write what sounds good to me. Whether others like it or not, I don't care too much, which is why I don't really release my work.
@@heavyjacktv thank you, sir, that's some really valuable thoughts.
Agree but I would dispel the concept of some genius composer. A lot of it is practice. Chugging and making riffs doesn't count. It is a seperate skill set that requires as much practice as playing an instrument. Classical music does ig well by combing specialized performers and composers together. You want a construction worker to be your engineer?
Aw damn I missed this one somehow… you guys lucked out!
The Still Searching stuff is actually great! This clean part is something non-generic, and I would love to listen this song again.

Septa reminds me of 90s with a mix of nu metal and post hardcore. Some korn and incubus vibe but also some Quicksand and Snapcase, which are more known to hardcore punk scenesters than metalheads.
Yeah those genres was very popular over here 10 yrs ago
I don't think it's actually all that hard to write something that sounds good and remotely original.
The biggest problem I see getting in the way of originality is that people are WAAAAY too preoccupied with being like the popular things they've already seen and heard, which limits their own uniqueness ("I want to learn guitar so I can play like [X] band", for example).
This is not just something you see in the metal scene either, but everywhere (I mean just look at how every DIY tech video had to have "Iron Man" somewhere in the title for the longest time).
If you care too much about playing like everyone who came before you, you're only ever going to sound like those who came before you.
Learn to make music because you like music, not just because you liked a certain band. It's a good start, don't get me wrong, but a lot of people stop there and never progress beyond the "fanboy with skills" stage.
Honestly I don't even think that's a bad thing.
Given the fact so many people want to write music you're going to have people who simply want to copy, paste, and remix, as well as other people that want to innovate; I think most people fall somewhere between those categories.
Not everyone values innovation/uniqueness > tradition and what's popular, just like not everyone values complexity > simplicity.
Honestly, if people want to do things that are (perceptually) musically redundant, then as a musician myself, I don't see anything wrong with it. If people are fine just playing power chords in simple progression, that's cool with me as long as they're passionate about it.
I do agree part of musicianship is continually trying to improve and evolve yourself, but at the same time, I think investing time in just doing what you love without worrying about things like that is equally valid. 👍🏽
Or use your influences to mould your sound. That's why you have influences. Chevelle has a very heavy Tool influence and they sound nothing like Tool. Breaking Benjamin has a very heavy Nirvana influence and they sound nothing like Nirvana. Use your influences to mould your sound but don't be a carbon copy.
