Chicken Story: When OP was first given a copy of the CC&R's, the one page of restrictions is the ONLY ones OP is Legally required to obey because when a person moves into an HOA, they are LEGALLY required to provide a COMPLETE copy of the Rules...
Since OP wasn't provided a COMPLETE copy of the CC&R's, the HOA can only enforce the Rules they told OP exists...
Story 1, your 1st mistake was joining an hoa.
Second mistake was living in a crap country that allows HOAs!
Some states don't allow choosing whether or not to join.
I still cannot see any positive to an HOA. I don’t even know why it was dreamed up in the first place.

In our church, one member who did not grow up in the church was found to be teaching things to her Sunday School Class that were contrary to the church's official doctrine. The preacher asked her to stop and she responded by baking a cake. The preacher had been warned in advance about her and her cakes and so he refused to accept it. Her and her husband, an old friend who did grow up in the church, started going to a different church several miles away. I don't know what the other church thinks about teaching non-doctrinare materials to Sunday School classes.

Even then would have refused, as now their carport is part of your house. They want a carport it has to be self supporting, and not attached to ant part of OP property at all, and also set back enough so that the roof overhang does not intrude, nor does any water runoff fall on OP property either.

Before purchasing a big investment like a home at closing if there is a HOA/PHA the purchaser by law signed documents that the buyers agree to . The buyer that is smart has their personal real estate lawyer, who holds the escrow, read over all deed restriction documents. After that the buyer may back out or move forward with the purchase. People trust realtors who will say anything to move property because that’s how they make $$$$.

Story #2 doesn't add up. Why would they single the OP out like that over something so small? My conclusion: the story's probably fake.
A similar thing happened to me. My job allowed employees to roll over vacation time with no limit. I seldom take off, so I had accrued several months of time. I had decided to take off only to be told rules had changed, and I had no time due to the time being rolled back to the company. No current employees knew of the rule change, only new hires. To sum things up it cost me around $10,500 in vacation.

No sympathy here for the first poster. Like HOAs or not, he signed paperwork at closing and he agreed to abide by the rules. He didn't from the beginning with his fence.
Agreed and anyone who buys a property that is part of an HOA is not very smart. Plus buying a property because it's pretty is just dumb ! The story says he and his wife looked at several properties and bought this one because it looked good. Yes you should like the property you buy but it shouldn't be one of your top concerns and it's not like they liked the house, because there was no house, they built a house. Anyone that buys a property or house that is part of an HOA is either an idiot or a douche bag idiot. Even if all the people you talk to say it's a great HOA and there have never been any issues, ever. All it takes is for the president to quit or move and the HOA be taken over by some douche bag or some Koont Karen for everything to go to hell.
