I think this is a US problem more than a HOA problem. In Denmark almost any area within city limits it's mandatory to have HOA's. It's usually dictated by the city who also review and approve the founding documents for the association. The HOA then only maintains shared and green spaces, they fund maintenance through mandatory contribution, plans for installations like playground and arrange a few social gatherings. That's it, that's the end of their jurisdiction. The roadway is often still city property and maintained. The right to own property is secured in our constitution and therefore obviously supersedes the HOA. I cannot see how issues like these from the US could ever arise here, there is no legal basis for it. On your property you only have to follow rules put out by the city before the area was developed. For instance we have to have hedges and no fences in the property line between neighbors where I live, I knew this pre purchase.
I was telling my friend about these HOA stories awhile ago she was shocked. She has never had issues with HOA ,she is the paper keeper (her words) of her family landscaping company. She said that she recently got a call from HOA president to say they want to end their contract. She agreed as long as the HOA fully signs a paper , so she went to one of their meetings to get the whole HOA board to sign the paper saying if they end their contact they will not get to sign a new contract but go on the list of potential clients and wait for a spot to open. She said that one person on the board did not even read the paper before he started yelling at the president . She now says she totally believes these stories can happen

Seriously. The first thing I tell my realtor when I'm looking for a new house is "ABSOLUTELY NO HOAs!! Don't even suggest a house if it's in an HOA. They're all an automatic no."
A reasonable person doesn't want control over others. HOA's are based entirely on Communist ideals. You can't be a member of an HOA without supporting communism. If you're a true American and support American ideals, you don't support HOAs.
Sadly, defamation doesn't work that way. There has to be MONETARY damages in order to win a defamation case. Something like "I was fired from my high paying job because my coworker told the boss I SA'd her" would qualify, but "I lost my friends because a girl lied and told them I SA'd her" wouldn't qualify since you didn't lose any money from it. It's really, really dumb but that's just how it is in the US.

And sued the contractor, his "I have my orders" line was bs, you don't keep going just because an HOA clears you when an individual tells you you are trespassing on their land. I'm curious why the cops hadn't already informed him as much by that point, and how they even felt secure in still being there by the time the marine returned from abroad, wasn't one of the marine's instructions to his friend to have them trespassed off the property?
@@NotMe-ej9yz, yeah, whoever told you that monetary damages are needed lied to you, or your local laws suck. Most places monetary damages aren't required to win a defamation lawsuit. Yes, you have to demonstrate "damages", but damages can take many forms, including economic or monetary damages as you posted, but also include emotional distress and less concrete costs incurred from the false statements. For example, some places only require a plaintiff to show that a statement harmed their reputation and caused pain and suffering. Other places, however, may require concrete financial harm, such as lost business or income. In this case, the damages were in time lost in having to deal with these people for years, loses in time can be treated as real damages and a monetary judgement made for them. Furthermore the defamation in this case resulted in theft and defraud, so this guy certainly has a good case for defamation resulting into what you consider the more concrete damages that are not needed everywhere in the U.S. as damages in a defamation lawsuit. Regardless, find a good lawyer to advise you as to the laws where you live.
HOAs are crazy. A dude in the neighborhood i grew up in built an actual castle wall around his house (haven't actually seen it, just heard it through the grapevine). The thing allegedly has guard towers and everything. Said grapevine said it went to court and the HOA had to allow it. Them changing the rules just meant the castle wall was grandfathered in.
What do you mean? Here in Australia in blocks of units we generally have one or two SHARED clothes lines. The strata rules often say you're not allowed to hang your washing on your verandah, and the shared line is often the only option other than a personally owned portable fold up indoor clothes hanger.

Because a lot of them do get away with it. I moved into a neighborhood, a few years later rich people hired a developer and built a neighborhood with homes ranging from 500,000 to 1.5 million dollars. 2 years later those rich people formed an HOA, the very next year that HOA started enforcing their rules on us, leveling membership fees on us, denying us use of their pool which we where paying for. When we complained to the authorities about them, they got the local police to threaten us with arrest. So we moved the hell out of that neighborhood. And it ain't just HOAs that are like that, a veteran from Afghanistan got a job as the local dog catcher in my area, one day I caught her red handed trying get my dogs out of my yard so she could "catch" them and then fine me for them "being out". See, I have a kennel I keep my dogs in while I mow so I can keep the gates open. She pulled up, walked through the open gate and was trying to cut the lock off the kennel to let my dogs out. She tried that with another guy who pulled a gun on her. Eventually enough anonymous people sent her enough threats of "being shot" if she ever tried to do that s**t again that she quite. Cops refused to do anything about her trespassing, cutting private looks off of gates on private property and jimmying locked doors open to let people's dogs out because the city government was fully backing her.
@Princess_Celestia_ that's because dog catchers are a part of the police department. Our dog catcher stole my rare cat, he was chipped. When I showed up at her house to get him she called the police on me. I finally got our local vet to come and show them he was chipped and I was his owner. She even went as far as to accuse the vet of being paid off! That was too far and the vet who was very well known and a county board member put an end to the theirs job. My car ran to me when I called his name, he was very clever and could say what which really was so cute.
This seems like a lame defense of the HOA. Survey lines and lot sizes are a matter of public record. They knew from the beginning that it was his land. This isn't a "misundrstanding" that they cleared up. It was intentional.

honestly you can get any person to come up and say this at any time, but paperwork and contracts speak louder than that. you don't blame the knife for stabbing someone you blame the wielder.
@@Moopsy122 It is the paperwork and contracts where they failed due diligence. Anyone can hire your company to make changes to property too. You need to make sure they have the authority to make those changes, especially if the authority was challenged. A company os not a mindless tool, it needs to have procedures to make sure it is not violating the law or other peoples rights. Knives do not have thi obligation as they are near objects.

A couple of decades ago, some of my neighbors were campaigning hard to turn my neighborhood into an incorporated town ("so we can put in more speed bumps and stop signs without getting approval from the County"). All they would have needed for that was a majority vote. Several rancorous community meetings were held. Luckily, in the end, they couldn't get enough signatures to get it on the ballot.
@@MyFiddlePlayer Incorporating the town is not the same as creating an HOA...for one thing, Incorporated Towns are FAR better Regulated by the Federal and State Governments and being a Government, an Incorporated Town is required to abide by the State Constitution and hold regular Elections for Council and Mayor...an HOA is supposed to hold regular meetings and Elections for the Board, but many don't and the people in them don't know how to contact the State to hold the HOA accountable...
Well the thing is he is just there to do the job he was contracted for, though he definitely after hearing about potential lawsuits paused construction to make sure that the contract wasnt part of a fraud scheme and to make sure theyre doing honest work Then again he couldve been part of a shady contractor group that doesnt always verify contracts
@markelliott9737 true but it would logically be a more slap on the wrist type punishment if convicted due to being given a job that mostly likely looked legitimate, so most they would get is a company fine rather than jail time or something along those lines

I’m not part of an HOA. However, I use to live in an apartment complex, and every two months or so my cable would go out. So I called Comcast and complained, when the repairman came I asked him why my cable kept getting cut off. He (repairman) told me that about 30 apartments was wired for internet but only about 7 was actually paying for it, so the company would cut service to everyone and only the actual customers would complain. One of the reasons I will never live in an apartment (or condo) again the other reason was the roaches that was impossible to get rid of. No matter how clean you are, if your neighbor has roaches so do you.
I lived in a subdivision in the 1990s and I suspect there might have been a neighbor who was stealing cable. I didn't care, I was in the satellite TV business and have a a 10' dish in my yard. But the cable box that fed maybe 8 people was in my yard. I didn't mind that, of course. But someone kept messing with it and leaving the wires hanging out and even leaving the box cover on the ground. That was in my way when I cut my grass. For one season, I was annoyed but took the time to put the cables back in the box and replace the cover... OVER and OVER and OVER! The next season, I did it again but them called the cable company and told them I wouldn't be doing that anymore. After I cut the grass and put their cables back and put the cover back on, I told the cable company it was the last time. I said "from now on, if the cover in on the ground I will throw it away in the trash. If the are cables on the way when I gut my grass they'll just get run over. I don't care. The cable company ignored it, and sure enough the next time I cut my grass several cables got chopped up by the mower and the cover of the box got tossed into the trash. A few weeks later, when I gut the grass again, there was no cover, but there were several cables that got cut up again. This happened maybe 5 times. Then one day I was cutting the grass and there was a cable running to the box from the fence that had obviously been placed high up, well above a lawn mower's blades. But it was still in the way so I have to cut it to push the mower past it which I did. After about three months of that happening every 8 to 15 days, I was cutting the grass and noticed the cover had finally been replaced. The cable company had finally come out and tried to fix it. I could see that there was still one cable sticking out the bottom of box, just barely and in an angle. I though about cutting it but decided not to. Unlike before, it wasn't in my way. But in cutting around the box, the mower did touch the box. It did bump it but didn't cut anything. It happened to be a Sunday with some apparently significant ball games going on. A few minutes after cutting around the box, a rather dislikeable neighbor who had several dogs that yapped all night every night, came running out to the fence screaming at me. "DO YOU HAVE TO CUT OFF BY CABLE EVERY GODDAM TIME YOU CUT THE GRASS?" followed by a list of vulgar names. I was surprised because it was the first time I actually hadn't cut any lines in months! I said " Do you have to leave your cables all over my yard? " I then told him "I tried to resolve it with the cable company but they expect me to work for them for free and I don't even have cable! Cal them! They are the ones causing the problem. I'll call them again for you! " It turned out he was the one stealing the cable. He was the one leaving the box cover in my yard. He was the one leaving the cables hanging out. He was the one causing several of his neighbors to get their cables cut.
I cannot believe people never learn from HOAs. Like it’s a scale model of gov without separation of power, straight up if there’s no real way to hold them accountable they’ll do whatever they want.
I am kinda starting to think that the HOA phenomime is the catalyst to the current thinking by certain U.S. political parties that think that taking away peoples rights is ok.

Cutting the wire leading into the box is actually a federal violation here in the U.S. Just like phone service wires they're protected by FCC regulations. That can be a very nasty fine plus prison time for the offending party (or parties as the case maybe) who did or ordered it done. The H.O.A. is very very lucky that Spectrum didn't file for charges with the FCC. Then the full story with details as to who said what would come out.
40 years ago, I worked for United Video Cablevision, near Cincinnati. A construction company was building a new subdivision. They were finishing a home near the entrance. The owner of the company 'accidentally' cut the .750 main feed too the subdivision while finishing the driveway. It was over 24" below ground , in the right of way. Instead of simply scraping the top six inches they dug a hole over six feet deep. He told our techs "No one needs your damned Cable TV, so I'm going to rip it all out!" That was on a Saturday. They were supposed to close on that house in a few days. He freaked out when he was told that there was a $50,000 lien against the house and our corporate lawyer would be out of the office for a couple weeks after that day. He paid, reluctantly. Then our manager told him, If you do this again it can take up to six months to remove a lien."
I've seen that last story on the "Am I the jerk" channel. I think she ended up getting chewed out by the police for making unreasonable rules, and since she did not own the building, she couldn't legally make them to begin with.
i'm pretty sure that the USA has specific laws that prevent HOA's from interfearing with commercial telecomunications equipment. So them cutting that wire would be a felony under federal law.
Exactly, I would have made a federal case out of it and have them pay for my lawyer all over a wire. I would then have demanded years of therapy to deal with the anxiety and PTSD I felt being cut off from the world without my internet and Netflix. Some may call it extortion, but it's probably better than having a felony conviction on your record. Once you get one of those, all someone would have to do is inform your employer they have a convict on the payroll and I'm sure that conversation on Monday won't be pleasant. I'm probably going to need a new car to drive to therapy too.

From a European perspective, I admit, many things about the US strike me as weird, stupid or petty. But nothing about the US strikes me as severely clinically insane as HOAs.
Love the new kitty. Last one would have asked for the pegs and bag back, and if there was a single word out her mouth would have called the police for theft and vandalism, because now you have to do all the washing again, and this then needs to be dried, and she has stolen the pegs and bag, and there is a good chance of the washing now having permanent mud stains, so will need replacing as well with new. Couple of sets of clothes, couple of sets of fitted sheets will get this into felony range, along with the need now, because you need them today, to drive to a laundry and do them, so the charges include laundry charges, plus the Uber there and back, plus your time at current rate as well. Easily $2k AUD there for direct damages.

You buy a house for $200,000. A new neighbor moves in next to you and stops mowing the yard, puts a couple of cars he is fixing in his front yard, and never dumps his trash. Nothing he has done is illegal, but if you have to move again, you will probably have to sell your house for less than you paid for. Because your neighbor does not care what his house looks like could end up costing you $50,000 or more. That is the reason for HOAs The problem is some HOAs can have real dicks running them. Also, most of the stories you hear online suffer from the unreliable narrator syndrome. The teller of the tale will never admit to being wrong as well.

HOA pool story people need to think outside the box you have issue with construction sure call the police but file a report with zoning county engineer or whoever is in charge of permits. The police might not able to stop things immediately but the group in charge of permits can
That's the smart move, but most people don't work in construction. I would first call a tow company and have all of their vehicles towed from my property, then I would call the police to remove trespassers, then we can have a look at those work permits. The police should be used appropriately, they aren't permit experts. I would have also had the HOA pay for my 5 star hotel as the company I hired to restore my property gets to work. It's not healthy to live in a construction zone. I would also not just go after the HOA, I would specifically single out the President so I can make sure to bankrupt her and force her to sell her house to settle the lawsuit. I would then start a new HOA and continually fine those old HOA people until they moved to another neighborhood.
Personally, I'd be going after the HOA, The HOA President, the Construction company and every construction worker involved. It doesn't matter that the Construction company and it's workers were contracted by the HOA. The Construction company was negligent in ensuring that the HOA had a legal right to contract them. They were also negligent in ensuring that the property that they were contracted to build on, was in fact public property. The HOA doesn't have the legal right nor authority to alter property lines and had the construction company had a survey done, or pulled the property maps, they would have known that the property was in fact, not public. This amounts to criminal negligence on the part of the construction company.
ALWAYS call the cops if suddenly ANYONE builds ANYTHING on your property, if only for the paperwork as these people can assume you are allowing the theft by not claiming they did anything
Knowingly allowing it to continue can also constitute consenting to the work, people have been ordered by the courts to pay for work that they didn't request but allowed to happen
The first story taking down harshly is the way it should be done with power hungry H.O.A.s. Then a one hundred year moratorium put into place, that prevents another from starting up, or any property that was in the original can't join or bee added to the H.O.A.
Story 1 I say this on every video that has to do an HOAs If you choose to live in at HOA or voluntarily sign up for an HOA you deserve what happens all the fines all the harassment is on you you deserve it for joining it HOA's are an unnecessary and stupid waste of money
The Punisher: You should check out the franchise that inspired The Punisher, Mack Bolan The Executioner. A series of paperback books that started back in the 1960s. Like comic books, but without pictures. I don't know if you would like them, but you would be able to see what Punisher started with and what they did with him. For those purposes you would probably want to track down the ones from between when they started and when The Punisher started.
There's like 631 Mack Bolan novellas, not counting the spin off Able Team, Phoenix Force, and Stony Man books which came out at various points. They're all gloriously terrible. Also check out the Remo Williams Destroyer series, which is a similarly themed martial arts action book that gets more batshit across it's 155 book run.

That sounds smart, but you just never know how far they will go. If they see no challenges to a pool, they may tear the house down to build a BBQ area.
@@Skamara There was a story where an HOA board decided that a house had to be torn down because it didn't match the asthetic of the neighborhood. Even contracted with a construction crew to demolish the house. The house was never part of the HOA and was actually outside of the neighborhood. The home owner arrived just as the construction crew were getting ready to tear his house down. So, I would never doubt the lengths an HOA will go to, to enforce their will on others....
I think the HOA I was in was either disbanded or they're really lax... there are houses that need repairs and such on my street, and no one gets fined.
I had to deal with one once and it was enough for me because the company I worked with did some business with them so that was how I found out about their scam and where they actually spent the money they collected. From my experiences, I feel all HOA are different levels of corruption. They exist solely to allow a few people to enrich themselves.
Sometimes you don’t have a choice. My city has laws that demands neighborhoods have an HOA. If the local one disbanded, they’d just step in and forcibly make a new one.

Rent-a-Cop Story: I'd have reported him for openly walking around with an AR-15 rifle... Does he have the proper Weapons permit (Ownership, carry etc.)? Is it loaded? Does he have Legal Low-Capacity Magazine or not? What kind of rounds is he loading? Other than the AR-15, what other weapons is he carrying? Are they Legal or not?
It would depend on what state he is in. Until recently where I am you could legally walk down the street with a rifle strapped to your back and as long as you aren't threatening people (I. E pointing it at them) it was perfectly legal. Extremely dumb thing to do, but legal. You would only get in trouble if you were concealing a gun without a permit. Relatively recently the law was changed so that you no longer need a permit to conceal (known as constitutional carry), but where I am this guard was not breaking any laws.

fun fact, even if you were a member of the HOA, they legally cannot build a pool on your property. Also, if they actually had a permit, then whoever gave the permit broke the law and whoever obviously forged papers to say the property was owned by the HOA.
I wish I knew what an HOA was before I bought my house. I mean I saw the paperwork, but I didn’t think it was so pervasive. Seriously, I got fined because my dog door was white and not one of the approved shades of brown/red. Apparently it “stuck out like a sore thumb.” They wanted the driveway lightbulbs changed because it didn’t shine the right color, the house repainted 3 times because it “didn’t dry the right shade (and of course I had to bear the cost), for me to take down the solar panels, to remove the satellite dish because it “ruined neighborhood aesthetics,” to take down the backyard greenhouse even though you couldn’t even see it from the front, to fine me and replant a tree that I removed because the roots were starting to grow into the foundation of the house, to fine me because I removed some bushes that had been blocking the view out the window, to fine me for putting in some privacy film in my front window, ect. I thought then, “Hey, maybe I could get together with the neighbors and try to disband it.” But they told me that the city actually mandated that all suburban neighborhoods HAD to have an HOA. If there wasn’t one, or if the local HOA was abolished, the city would step in and form an HOA in the area themselves. And it was likely that most of the previous members of the HOA would be on the new one as well. Gave up after that.
Should have been calling the police and filing CRIMINAL harassment AND trespassing charges not later then when they intruded on your property to "measure the fence".

I catch someone on my roof w/o permission, I first pull the ladder away then call the police for trespassing, B&E, vandalism and anything else my next attorney can add to the charges.
anyone who wants to raise property value doesn't want to live there, they want to sell it. Because higher property value doesn't mean better living spaces, it just means it looks better for buyers and raises property taxes.

Actually a similar story happened when someone built a mansion on the wrong lot. The owner of the lot technically can't be unjustly enriched and the property would have to be torn down.
Last story is old and and you forget to add when the Karen had the BBQ in the shared backyard and wanted to take ops stuff off her deck and her bathroom to be public restroom for her guests 😂
Tip: if someone is harrasing you like that, report everything to the police, ecpecially if you have evidence And after some time they will have a strong case against them

I think this is a US problem more than a HOA problem. In Denmark almost any area within city limits it's mandatory to have HOA's. It's usually dictated by the city who also review and approve the founding documents for the association.
The HOA then only maintains shared and green spaces, they fund maintenance through mandatory contribution, plans for installations like playground and arrange a few social gatherings. That's it, that's the end of their jurisdiction. The roadway is often still city property and maintained.
The right to own property is secured in our constitution and therefore obviously supersedes the HOA.
I cannot see how issues like these from the US could ever arise here, there is no legal basis for it.
On your property you only have to follow rules put out by the city before the area was developed. For instance we have to have hedges and no fences in the property line between neighbors where I live, I knew this pre purchase.

I was telling my friend about these HOA stories awhile ago she was shocked. She has never had issues with HOA ,she is the paper keeper (her words) of her family landscaping company. She said that she recently got a call from HOA president to say they want to end their contract. She agreed as long as the HOA fully signs a paper , so she went to one of their meetings to get the whole HOA board to sign the paper saying if they end their contact they will not get to sign a new contract but go on the list of potential clients and wait for a spot to open. She said that one person on the board did not even read the paper before he started yelling at the president . She now says she totally believes these stories can happen

A reasonable person doesn't want control over others. HOA's are based entirely on Communist ideals. You can't be a member of an HOA without supporting communism. If you're a true American and support American ideals, you don't support HOAs.

For story 1 I would have also started a defamation lawsuit against each individual board member who was spreading lies about OP.
Sadly, defamation doesn't work that way. There has to be MONETARY damages in order to win a defamation case. Something like "I was fired from my high paying job because my coworker told the boss I SA'd her" would qualify, but "I lost my friends because a girl lied and told them I SA'd her" wouldn't qualify since you didn't lose any money from it.
It's really, really dumb but that's just how it is in the US.

Yes, you have to demonstrate "damages", but damages can take many forms, including economic or monetary damages as you posted, but also include emotional distress and less concrete costs incurred from the false statements. For example, some places only require a plaintiff to show that a statement harmed their reputation and caused pain and suffering. Other places, however, may require concrete financial harm, such as lost business or income. In this case, the damages were in time lost in having to deal with these people for years, loses in time can be treated as real damages and a monetary judgement made for them. Furthermore the defamation in this case resulted in theft and defraud, so this guy certainly has a good case for defamation resulting into what you consider the more concrete damages that are not needed everywhere in the U.S. as damages in a defamation lawsuit. Regardless, find a good lawyer to advise you as to the laws where you live.
HOAs are crazy. A dude in the neighborhood i grew up in built an actual castle wall around his house (haven't actually seen it, just heard it through the grapevine). The thing allegedly has guard towers and everything. Said grapevine said it went to court and the HOA had to allow it. Them changing the rules just meant the castle wall was grandfathered in.

What do you mean? Here in Australia in blocks of units we generally have one or two SHARED clothes lines. The strata rules often say you're not allowed to hang your washing on your verandah, and the shared line is often the only option other than a personally owned portable fold up indoor clothes hanger.

Because a lot of them do get away with it. I moved into a neighborhood, a few years later rich people hired a developer and built a neighborhood with homes ranging from 500,000 to 1.5 million dollars. 2 years later those rich people formed an HOA, the very next year that HOA started enforcing their rules on us, leveling membership fees on us, denying us use of their pool which we where paying for. When we complained to the authorities about them, they got the local police to threaten us with arrest. So we moved the hell out of that neighborhood.
And it ain't just HOAs that are like that, a veteran from Afghanistan got a job as the local dog catcher in my area, one day I caught her red handed trying get my dogs out of my yard so she could "catch" them and then fine me for them "being out". See, I have a kennel I keep my dogs in while I mow so I can keep the gates open. She pulled up, walked through the open gate and was trying to cut the lock off the kennel to let my dogs out. She tried that with another guy who pulled a gun on her. Eventually enough anonymous people sent her enough threats of "being shot" if she ever tried to do that s**t again that she quite. Cops refused to do anything about her trespassing, cutting private looks off of gates on private property and jimmying locked doors open to let people's dogs out because the city government was fully backing her.
@Princess_Celestia_ that's because dog catchers are a part of the police department. Our dog catcher stole my rare cat, he was chipped. When I showed up at her house to get him she called the police on me. I finally got our local vet to come and show them he was chipped and I was his owner. She even went as far as to accuse the vet of being paid off! That was too far and the vet who was very well known and a county board member put an end to the theirs job. My car ran to me when I called his name, he was very clever and could say what which really was so cute.
To readily admit to screwing up is actually a sign of a good HOA. Bad ones keep digging.

You need to make sure they have the authority to make those changes, especially if the authority was challenged. A company os not a mindless tool, it needs to have procedures to make sure it is not violating the law or other peoples rights. Knives do not have thi obligation as they are near objects.

A couple of decades ago, some of my neighbors were campaigning hard to turn my neighborhood into an incorporated town ("so we can put in more speed bumps and stop signs without getting approval from the County"). All they would have needed for that was a majority vote. Several rancorous community meetings were held. Luckily, in the end, they couldn't get enough signatures to get it on the ballot.

I’m not part of an HOA. However, I use to live in an apartment complex, and every two months or so my cable would go out. So I called Comcast and complained, when the repairman came I asked him why my cable kept getting cut off. He (repairman) told me that about 30 apartments was wired for internet but only about 7 was actually paying for it, so the company would cut service to everyone and only the actual customers would complain.
One of the reasons I will never live in an apartment (or condo) again the other reason was the roaches that was impossible to get rid of. No matter how clean you are, if your neighbor has roaches so do you.
I lived in a subdivision in the 1990s and I suspect there might have been a neighbor who was stealing cable. I didn't care, I was in the satellite TV business and have a a 10' dish in my yard. But the cable box that fed maybe 8 people was in my yard. I didn't mind that, of course. But someone kept messing with it and leaving the wires hanging out and even leaving the box cover on the ground. That was in my way when I cut my grass. For one season, I was annoyed but took the time to put the cables back in the box and replace the cover... OVER and OVER and OVER! The next season, I did it again but them called the cable company and told them I wouldn't be doing that anymore. After I cut the grass and put their cables back and put the cover back on, I told the cable company it was the last time. I said "from now on, if the cover in on the ground I will throw it away in the trash. If the are cables on the way when I gut my grass they'll just get run over. I don't care.
The cable company ignored it, and sure enough the next time I cut my grass several cables got chopped up by the mower and the cover of the box got tossed into the trash. A few weeks later, when I gut the grass again, there was no cover, but there were several cables that got cut up again. This happened maybe 5 times. Then one day I was cutting the grass and there was a cable running to the box from the fence that had obviously been placed high up, well above a lawn mower's blades. But it was still in the way so I have to cut it to push the mower past it which I did.
After about three months of that happening every 8 to 15 days, I was cutting the grass and noticed the cover had finally been replaced. The cable company had finally come out and tried to fix it. I could see that there was still one cable sticking out the bottom of box, just barely and in an angle. I though about cutting it but decided not to. Unlike before, it wasn't in my way. But in cutting around the box, the mower did touch the box. It did bump it but didn't cut anything. It happened to be a Sunday with some apparently significant ball games going on. A few minutes after cutting around the box, a rather dislikeable neighbor who had several dogs that yapped all night every night, came running out to the fence screaming at me. "DO YOU HAVE TO CUT OFF BY CABLE EVERY GODDAM TIME YOU CUT THE GRASS?" followed by a list of vulgar names. I was surprised because it was the first time I actually hadn't cut any lines in months! I said " Do you have to leave your cables all over my yard? " I then told him "I tried to resolve it with the cable company but they expect me to work for them for free and I don't even have cable! Cal them! They are the ones causing the problem. I'll call them again for you! " It turned out he was the one stealing the cable. He was the one leaving the box cover in my yard. He was the one leaving the cables hanging out. He was the one causing several of his neighbors to get their cables cut.
I cannot believe people never learn from HOAs. Like it’s a scale model of gov without separation of power, straight up if there’s no real way to hold them accountable they’ll do whatever they want.

Cutting the wire leading into the box is actually a federal violation here in the U.S. Just like phone service wires they're protected by FCC regulations. That can be a very nasty fine plus prison time for the offending party (or parties as the case maybe) who did or ordered it done. The H.O.A. is very very lucky that Spectrum didn't file for charges with the FCC. Then the full story with details as to who said what would come out.
40 years ago, I worked for United Video Cablevision, near Cincinnati. A construction company was building a new subdivision. They were finishing a home near the entrance. The owner of the company 'accidentally' cut the .750 main feed too the subdivision while finishing the driveway. It was over 24" below ground , in the right of way. Instead of simply scraping the top six inches they dug a hole over six feet deep. He told our techs "No one needs your damned Cable TV, so I'm going to rip it all out!" That was on a Saturday.
They were supposed to close on that house in a few days. He freaked out when he was told that there was a $50,000 lien against the house and our corporate lawyer would be out of the office for a couple weeks after that day. He paid, reluctantly. Then our manager told him, If you do this again it can take up to six months to remove a lien."

I've seen that last story on the "Am I the jerk" channel. I think she ended up getting chewed out by the police for making unreasonable rules, and since she did not own the building, she couldn't legally make them to begin with.

i'm pretty sure that the USA has specific laws that prevent HOA's from interfearing with commercial telecomunications equipment. So them cutting that wire would be a felony under federal law.
Exactly, I would have made a federal case out of it and have them pay for my lawyer all over a wire. I would then have demanded years of therapy to deal with the anxiety and PTSD I felt being cut off from the world without my internet and Netflix. Some may call it extortion, but it's probably better than having a felony conviction on your record. Once you get one of those, all someone would have to do is inform your employer they have a convict on the payroll and I'm sure that conversation on Monday won't be pleasant. I'm probably going to need a new car to drive to therapy too.

Last one would have asked for the pegs and bag back, and if there was a single word out her mouth would have called the police for theft and vandalism, because now you have to do all the washing again, and this then needs to be dried, and she has stolen the pegs and bag, and there is a good chance of the washing now having permanent mud stains, so will need replacing as well with new. Couple of sets of clothes, couple of sets of fitted sheets will get this into felony range, along with the need now, because you need them today, to drive to a laundry and do them, so the charges include laundry charges, plus the Uber there and back, plus your time at current rate as well. Easily $2k AUD there for direct damages.

She grabbed the bag of her clothes and stormed out, then she burnt rubber down that old country road.

Why does anyone want to join another HOA if people technically already live in a giant one?

You buy a house for $200,000. A new neighbor moves in next to you and stops mowing the yard, puts a couple of cars he is fixing in his front yard, and never dumps his trash. Nothing he has done is illegal, but if you have to move again, you will probably have to sell your house for less than you paid for. Because your neighbor does not care what his house looks like could end up costing you $50,000 or more. That is the reason for HOAs
The problem is some HOAs can have real dicks running them. Also, most of the stories you hear online suffer from the unreliable narrator syndrome. The teller of the tale will never admit to being wrong as well.

HOA pool story people need to think outside the box you have issue with construction sure call the police but file a report with zoning county engineer or whoever is in charge of permits. The police might not able to stop things immediately but the group in charge of permits can
That's the smart move, but most people don't work in construction. I would first call a tow company and have all of their vehicles towed from my property, then I would call the police to remove trespassers, then we can have a look at those work permits. The police should be used appropriately, they aren't permit experts. I would have also had the HOA pay for my 5 star hotel as the company I hired to restore my property gets to work. It's not healthy to live in a construction zone. I would also not just go after the HOA, I would specifically single out the President so I can make sure to bankrupt her and force her to sell her house to settle the lawsuit. I would then start a new HOA and continually fine those old HOA people until they moved to another neighborhood.
Personally, I'd be going after the HOA, The HOA President, the Construction company and every construction worker involved. It doesn't matter that the Construction company and it's workers were contracted by the HOA. The Construction company was negligent in ensuring that the HOA had a legal right to contract them. They were also negligent in ensuring that the property that they were contracted to build on, was in fact public property. The HOA doesn't have the legal right nor authority to alter property lines and had the construction company had a survey done, or pulled the property maps, they would have known that the property was in fact, not public. This amounts to criminal negligence on the part of the construction company.
ALWAYS call the cops if suddenly ANYONE builds ANYTHING on your property, if only for the paperwork as these people can assume you are allowing the theft by not claiming they did anything
Knowingly allowing it to continue can also constitute consenting to the work, people have been ordered by the courts to pay for work that they didn't request but allowed to happen

The first story taking down harshly is the way it should be done with power hungry H.O.A.s. Then a one hundred year moratorium put into place, that prevents another from starting up, or any property that was in the original can't join or bee added to the H.O.A.

The Punisher: You should check out the franchise that inspired The Punisher, Mack Bolan The Executioner. A series of paperback books that started back in the 1960s. Like comic books, but without pictures. I don't know if you would like them, but you would be able to see what Punisher started with and what they did with him. For those purposes you would probably want to track down the ones from between when they started and when The Punisher started.
There's like 631 Mack Bolan novellas, not counting the spin off Able Team, Phoenix Force, and Stony Man books which came out at various points. They're all gloriously terrible. Also check out the Remo Williams Destroyer series, which is a similarly themed martial arts action book that gets more batshit across it's 155 book run.

That sounds smart, but you just never know how far they will go. If they see no challenges to a pool, they may tear the house down to build a BBQ area.

@@Skamara There was a story where an HOA board decided that a house had to be torn down because it didn't match the asthetic of the neighborhood. Even contracted with a construction crew to demolish the house. The house was never part of the HOA and was actually outside of the neighborhood. The home owner arrived just as the construction crew were getting ready to tear his house down. So, I would never doubt the lengths an HOA will go to, to enforce their will on others....
I think the HOA I was in was either disbanded or they're really lax... there are houses that need repairs and such on my street, and no one gets fined.
I had to deal with one once and it was enough for me because the company I worked with did some business with them so that was how I found out about their scam and where they actually spent the money they collected. From my experiences, I feel all HOA are different levels of corruption. They exist solely to allow a few people to enrich themselves.

Sometimes you don’t have a choice. My city has laws that demands neighborhoods have an HOA. If the local one disbanded, they’d just step in and forcibly make a new one.

It would depend on what state he is in. Until recently where I am you could legally walk down the street with a rifle strapped to your back and as long as you aren't threatening people (I. E pointing it at them) it was perfectly legal. Extremely dumb thing to do, but legal. You would only get in trouble if you were concealing a gun without a permit. Relatively recently the law was changed so that you no longer need a permit to conceal (known as constitutional carry), but where I am this guard was not breaking any laws.

fun fact, even if you were a member of the HOA, they legally cannot build a pool on your property. Also, if they actually had a permit, then whoever gave the permit broke the law and whoever obviously forged papers to say the property was owned by the HOA.
This is exactly why I have avoided HOAs my whole life. The stories are great, especially the one with the pool in the backyard. That guy was awesome.
I wish I knew what an HOA was before I bought my house. I mean I saw the paperwork, but I didn’t think it was so pervasive. Seriously, I got fined because my dog door was white and not one of the approved shades of brown/red. Apparently it “stuck out like a sore thumb.” They wanted the driveway lightbulbs changed because it didn’t shine the right color, the house repainted 3 times because it “didn’t dry the right shade (and of course I had to bear the cost), for me to take down the solar panels, to remove the satellite dish because it “ruined neighborhood aesthetics,” to take down the backyard greenhouse even though you couldn’t even see it from the front, to fine me and replant a tree that I removed because the roots were starting to grow into the foundation of the house, to fine me because I removed some bushes that had been blocking the view out the window, to fine me for putting in some privacy film in my front window, ect.
I thought then, “Hey, maybe I could get together with the neighbors and try to disband it.” But they told me that the city actually mandated that all suburban neighborhoods HAD to have an HOA. If there wasn’t one, or if the local HOA was abolished, the city would step in and form an HOA in the area themselves. And it was likely that most of the previous members of the HOA would be on the new one as well. Gave up after that.

Actually a similar story happened when someone built a mansion on the wrong lot. The owner of the lot technically can't be unjustly enriched and the property would have to be torn down.
