Well... not exactly. There were touch screen smartphones at the time.. they just weren't as popular. And while the blackberry wasn't touch screen, it was just as powerful (if not more so) than the IPhone. IPhones just made touch screen smartphones big and gave people a smartphone that worked with their itunes library and connected with their macs. Thus, it had a super huge advantage over all other touchscreen phones. The IPhone wasn't revolutionary because it brought something new, but because it made something big (and frankly, that's much more important).

I have the best phone ever made - Nokia 1110i - I can make calls, send and receive txts and it's so easy to use. Best of all - the battery lasts a week!
